      LSU Tigers News Clips

4-star North Carolina QB Johnnie James will take his talents to Baton Rouge.

LSU | 4-star QB Johnnie James commits
      Sat, 30 Oct 2027 23:09:11 -0700

Eve Jewell of ESPN's SEC Network reports that even during their bye weekend, the good times for LSU kept on coming, as the team received a commitment from 4-star North Carolina QB Johnnie James (6-2, 190 pounds, 5.02 40-time, #11 rated QB prospect) late Saturday evening. The Dunn native, who is first year Tigers head coach D. Geezy's first quarterback commitment at his new school, took to Instagram to announce his intent -

"My family and I spent the past week praying and consulting with several people before making a firm decision on this, and I have decided that Baton Rouge is the place for me. I can't wait to get down South and get to play for Coach Geezy. Hold that Tiger!"

James, who played baseball in high school until suffering a torn Achilles during his junior season on the mound as a pitcher, was recently clocked at a paltry 5.02 40-time, making him a curious fit for Tigers offensive coordinator Anthony High's system, which currently features mobile junior QB Rob Mason (83 ovr). James is likely to redshirt in his first season in Baton Rouge, with Mason still having one year of eligibility remaining and redshirt sophomore QB Matt Harris (78 ovr) set to return.

Geezy and the LSU coaching staff could only hope that James turns out as good as the last 4-star quarterback Geezy signed out of the state of North Carolina, Tulane senior star QB Jimmy McBride (90 ovr). According to family sources, McBride played a role in James committing to LSU, as James reached out to McBride to talk about what it would be like playing for Geezy, and received glowing reviews.

With a total of 12 players signed, James' commitment will end the Tigers' 2028 Early Signing Period recruiting campaign, according to a source familiar with the Tigers' recruiting plans. LSU's current 2028 recruiting class is ranked 14th in the nation, and the team will look to improve upon that in the off-season when a new crop of prospects will open up their recruitment after using their right to elect not to be contacted until January.

2028 LSU Recruiting Class - through week 10 (currently rated 14th in the nation)

Recruiting class is looking great right now, especially in the secondary. Also, I think that the game against Bama is gonna be a close one and I can't wait to read through that!

Thanks jp. I am already pumped about this recruiting class and we're not done just yet, since we have the off-season batch of recruits still to come. The two players we got that I am most hyped up about are CB Vince Cromartie and LB Derek Kerr, who should be high-impact players from day 1. Also, don't sleep on speedy juco RB D.J. Weaver, who may find himself playing a big role early in his career.

I am still hoping to get a little bit more top-speed on the team overall, which is something we're severely lacking in certain areas, though it is certainly improving with the guys I just highlighted above.

You have no idea just how anxious I am for the weekend to get here so I can get this Bama game in! I had no idea that I'd be in a game of this magnitude just a few short weeks ago. I truly feel like I am gearing up for a heavyweight fight!

Game 9, Year 1 Preview (2027 season): #13 LSU Tigers at #1 Alabama Crimson Tide

            GAME 9 PREVIEW

            Courtesy

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

            ....................10 1/2....................

Last season, Coach D. Geezy's Tulane squad knocked off RB Deuce Monroe (above) and the two-time defending national champion Crimson Tide 31-16 at Tuscaloosa after losing both of their previous two matchups with the SEC juggernaut.

Game Capsule: #13 LSU travels to Tuscaloosa to face #1 Alabama on Saturday night in what will be a late-season battle for first place in the SEC West, something that seemed extremely unlikely just a month ago for the visiting Tigers, who come in having won each of their past five games. The boys from Baton Rouge have not had much success versus the Crimson Tide in recent seasons, including losing in a 41-14 drubbing last season at Death Valley, a game in which former Tide running back and Coach D. Geezy nemesis Deuce Monroe rushed for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns. In fact, you'd have to go all the way back to the 2016 season to find the last time the Tigers defeated the Tide in their annual SEC divisional series, when they won 24-17 in Baton Rouge, however Alabama has won each of the past 10 contests between the two programs since then.

First year LSU head coach D. Geezy has had much more success versus Alabama, boasting a 9-4 all-time record versus them back when he was coaching Tulane. Like LSU, Geezy's Green Wave has faced Bama annually as members of the SEC West since 2014, and defeated the Tide in Tuscaloosa just last season, knocking off the then-two time defending national champions 31-16 and ending what was a 39-game winning streak for the Crimson Tide. Prior to last year's triumph, Geezy had lost each of the previous two contests to Alabama; in fact, the Crimson Tide has won an ultra-impressive 53 of their past 55 contests since the tail-end of 2022, however both of their losses during that stretch came at the hands of Geezy.

            Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

LSU head coach D. Geezy addressed the media on Monday ahead of Saturday night's colossal matchup.

I can't say I thought 6 or 7 months ago that we'd be in this position, but here we are, with a chance to do something very special here late in the season. Personally, I feel like I honestly underestimated the overall will and heart of the guys in our locker room; there's been a little bit of luck along the way obviously, but we have a special group of guys, both in terms of players and on the coaching staff, and we deserve to be here.

Alabama will probably be our toughest challenge this season, as they are for pretty much everyone every single year. They have a young signal caller in QB Matt Thompson (85 ovr) that's been outstanding in his first year as a starter for them. In a lot of ways, he reminds me a lot of Rob Mason (83 ovr), in that he is a threat both as a passer and as a runner, having thrown 25 touchdowns while also using his tremendous speed to rush for 4 scores this year.

He has some great weapons at this disposal, including juco transfer Alex Moore (80 ovr) at running back along with WR Willie Snyder (90 ovr), a player I once recruited very hard with Tulane, and true freshman WR Henry Oliver (80 ovr), a blue chip player who was rated as one of the top wideouts in the nation during last year's recruiting period. Both of those guys are 6-3, and it is not a surprise that the pair has combined for 15 scores already this season (Snyder: 7, Oliver: 8).

On the other side of the ball, they're as great as always across the entire defense, and it really starts up front. Freshman DE Larry Shelton was the #1 recruiting prospect in the nation this past off-season and leads his team with 6 1/2 sacks already. He's surrounded by probably 6 or 7 potential first round picks, including OLB Seth Foster (94 ovr) and CB Ronald McGill (90 ovr), and it is no doubt that we will have our work cut out for us to try to move the ball.

Look...I am going to be honest and say that if you play this game 10 times, they probably win 8 of them. But I'll tell you what, they can be beat, just as we proved last year and so many times before when I was with Tulane. Saturday night, we have an opportunity to change the narrative about our program a bit. We can go from just being a fun Cinderella story to suddenly being in first place with just a couple of conference games to go.

Bama is a tough team to beat, but all it takes is one strong game where we bring our best effort, and I believe we have that in us and can get this 'W.'

^lol I'm not here to call any shots, but I'm anticipating a fun one.

I was looking over your depth chart. Can you explain how your defense works to me?

I know it says 4-2-5 but it looks like in practice you maybe run a 3-3-5.

I know the Star is the hybrid safety linebacker, which I would assume is the weakside safety (#2SS on the depth chart) but how do the Buck and DE/LB hybrid positions work? Is it just a matter of formation substitutions?

All reaction gifs aside, I can't hate on your prediction - it is almost right in-line with my attempt at an unbiased betting line. I had it from anywhere between 11.5 to 13.5, but settled on 10.5 based on their close game results thus far and with this being a rivalry game with a lot on the line.

There's no doubt, this is an uphill battle for us, but as a wise man named Chris Berman once said - "that's why they play the games."

Our base defense truly is a 4-2-5. I think what is a bit misleading with the way I have my depth chart laid out in that I have Matt Manning listed as just a DE/LB, but the truth is, he plays DT too. Manning, Robert Carrington, and a junior player named Travis Fellows (82 ovr) rotate at DT, I just choose not to list it all out. Great to know that you're paying that much attention to things.

The Buck position is indeed a DE/LB hybrid. I use both Manning and freshman OLB Will McNeal in that role, and yes, formation subs is how I do it. In some formations, Manning is at LB while McNeal has his hand in the dirt as a rush end and vice versa. In some formations, I have both Manning and McNeal at LB. And in a couple of formations, I have Manning at DT with McNeal next to him at DE. One of the most fun aspects of the 4-2-5 has been the mixing and matching personnel, and the recent signing, LB Derek Kerr, will only add to that arsenal of versatility with his 4.3 speed.

I wrote a brief breakdown on the 4-2-5 a few months back when I "hired defensive coordinator Charles Kelly," if you want to check it out. And it is worth pointing out that the 3-3-5 is indeed a formation in the 4-2-5 playbook, and that is one I use quite frequently as well. I've honestly never had as much playing defense.

And with all that said, after a two week break it is finally time to get this game with Bama in! As I sit here waiting for the game to load, I'll just leave this bad boy here. I never thought I'd see the day where I would use a Billy Ray Cyrus song to get myself hyped up for a football game, but here we are.

                  Geaux Tigers!

I’ve been playing this on repeat all afternoon getting hyped for my red raiders in the final four! With that line I’d definitely take LSU and the points.
If Mason can keep up the momentum he’s gained the past couple of weeks, it might be closer than everyone expects especially looking at Bama’s schedule and the results. The games they played against teams at least 2 wins above .500 were won by field goals. Your Tigers could easily be their toughest game to date. Geaux Tigers!

That track is amazing. I hope to see more collaborations like this between genres in the future.

Ha...if you truly did lay down the points, you would have won, barely. Alabama was literally inches away from having to kick a field goal to go up by 11 late. I'm sure bettors on both side were collectively ripping the hair out of their heads during Bama's last drive.

Despite a 4 touchdown effort by freshman RB Scottie Rodgers, costly mistakes doom #13 LSU in heartbreaking 43-35 loss at the hands of #1 Alabama | Tigers unable to stop RB Alex Moore as junior college transfer gashes defense for 240 rushing yards and a back-breaking late touchdown to help Crimson Tide clinch SEC West title | With first place atop the division on the line, QB Mason's 3 critical interceptions help doom LSU to yet another year without a championship | Geezy: This one will hurt for awhile

Tuscaloosa, AL -- On so many occasions this season, LSU has been able to buckle down in crunch time and come away with the plays necessary to win in the end. Unfortunately that did not happen on Saturday night as #1 Alabama was able to hold off a fourth quarter rally by the Tigers to come away with a 43-35 victory at Tuscaloosa and clinch another SEC West division title. Crimson Tide RB Alex Moore rushed for 240 yards yards on 26 carries, and his 85-yard fourth quarter touchdown helped the Tide hang on after nearly blowing a 33-14 fourth quarter lead.

LSU defensive coordinator Charles Kelly had no answer for RB Alex Moore all game long, as the juco transfer gashed the Tigers defense for a career-high 240 yards on 26 carries and helped Bama dominate the time of possession battle.

LSU, who came into the contest with an opportunity to take over first place in the SEC West division race with a win, took its first and only lead of the game when freshman RB Scottie Rodgers scampered 80 yards untouched for a touchdown to make the score 7-6 in the first quarter. The big play was an omen for things to come on the evening for the former 4-star recruit out of Marksville, Louisiana, but unfortunately his team's one-point lead would not last very long.

Alabama PK Tim Thomas, who finished the game 5 of 6 on field goals, connected on a 46-yard second quarter kick that gave the Tide a 9-7 lead with 6:17 to go until the half, a lead they'd never relinquish the rest of the game.

Later in the second quarter, after the two teams traded possessions, Alabama would begin to start to pull away, by way of its defense. Junior DE Joshua Williams' tip of LSU QB Rob Mason's pass would result in the ball landing in the hands of LB Ryan Hart, and the redshirt senior returned the ball for a 41-yard score to increase his team's lead to 16-7.

A few possessions later, after missing a 58-yard attempt with two minutes remaining in the second quarter, Thomas' 46-yard field goal just before halftime pushed the Crimson Tide's lead to 19-7 at the break, a lead that was mostly attributed to Williams and Hart's big defensive play.

The momentum of the game shifted sharply into the Tide's favor when DE Joshua Williams tipped QB Rob Mason's pass and it ended up in the awaiting arms of LB Ryan Hart, who returned the interception 41 yards for a touchdown that increased Bama's lead to 16-7 in the second quarter.

"We talk all the time about the things that could get you beat, and we did those things today with the turnovers," said LSU head coach D. Geezy, who as Tulane's coach prior to his arrival in Baton Rouge, is the only head coach in the nation to defeat Alabama since 2023.

Mason, who was a paltry 4 of 10 for 47 yards at halftime, was able to help lead his team on a 5-play 80-yard drive to start the second half. The possession culminated with a 40-yard touchdown run by Rodgers to cut the Tigers' deficit to 19-14. Rodgers finished the game with a career-high 173 yards on the ground, besting his 171-yard performance back in week two's 72-42 win over Texas Tech.

It was a big day for both teams' running backs as LSU true freshman Scottie Rodgers rushed for 173 yards and 4 touchdowns, both career-bests.
"Scottie had just 3 carries for 99 yards in the first half, and we came out in the second half hoping to establish the run," said LSU offensive coordinator Anthony High, whose offensive unit went just 1 of 6 on third downs during the game. "Unfortunately, we only got Scottie the ball 13 times tonight, pretty much all because of game-flow and us trailing most of the second half."

Back-to-back touchdown passes by Alabama QB Matt Thompson - a 15-yard touchdown to WR Randy Payne and a sensational 58-yard hookup with star freshman WR Henry Oliver - helped push Bama's lead to 33-14 heading into the fourth quarter. Thompson finished the game 20 of 36 for 361 passing yards to go along with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

"Needless to say, it was a frustrating night for us on defense," said Tigers defensive coordinator Charles Kelly, whose unit gave up 622 total yards of offense on Saturday. "We come out in our base 4-2-5, and they shred us with the pass; we come out in nickel or dime, and they tear us up with the running game. We knew we'd have a tough time defending their speed in the slot if we ran too much base, but that cost us in the running game. There was nothing we could do it felt like; it was just that type of night."

Now down by 19 and with the game and their division title hopes on life support, LSU did what they have done so many times this year and began to rally, but on this evening, they kept running into road blocks.

Rodgers' 3-yard touchdown run, his third score of the game, cut the Tigers' deficit to 33-21 with 8:57 remaining. An interception by FS Trey Wade on Bama's next possession, his FBS-high sixth on the year, would give LSU the ball back deep in Alabama territory with a chance to make it a one possession game. However, Mason's off-target pass attempt to freshman WR Brady Carter Jr. was picked off easily by Bama senior CB Johnny Richardson, halting the Tigers' golden opportunity. The turnover eventually led to a 40-yard field goal by Thomas to make the score 36-21 with under six minutes to go. The mistakes for the junior signal-caller would not end there unfortunately.

Mason would throw yet another interception on his team's next possession, this one to Alabama senior SS Patrick Humphrey in the end zone, keeping it a 15-point game with 5:30 remaining. Thankfully, Mason's defense had his back as a few play later however, as CB Jerome Harmon's 46-yard interception return touchdown cut the Bama lead to 36-28 with 4:33 to go.

"Both Trey and Jerome's picks came on targets to #87, and this time we were ready for that s***," said LSU defensive backs coach Steve Ellis, referring to Payne, who finished with a game-high 9 receptions for 124 yards for the Tide.

Sadly, Harmon's big play would not be enough. Moore, who repeatedly gashed the Tigers throughout the evening for big gains, got his biggest when he broke loose for an 85-yard touchdown on the game's very next play from scrimmage following Harmon's pick-six, all but putting the contest away, making the score 43-28 with 4:17 to go.

Junior QB Rob Mason will always wonder what could have been if not for his three big interceptions thrown during Saturday evening's contest with the SEC West Division on the line.

The Tigers would not go away that easily, as Rodgers would go on to score his fourth touchdown of the game when he found the end zone from 3 yards out to make the score 43-35 with 3:00 left. However that would be the last time LSU possessed the football as Alabama went on a 9-play drive to milk the rest of the clock and would punch its ticket into the SEC Championship Game for the third time in four years while adding yet another year to LSU's conference championship drought, which will now span at a whopping 21 years.

"At the end of the day, to win this conference, you have to beat Alabama and Tulane, and we did neither this year," said Geezy. "There is no question about it; this one will hurt for awhile. But we will use this as fuel and we hope to be back in this same position again next year.

"In all, I'm proud of our guys. We showed a lot of heart tonight, especially when things were stacked against us. We just couldn't seal the deal in the end."

LSU (6-3) will travel to face rival Ole Miss (5-4) next week at Oxford. The Rebels will be looking to become bowl eligible with a win, while the Tigers will be hoping to rebound despite now being forced to play for nothing but pride.

"Although we didn't accomplish our goal today or our goal this year as far as winning the conference, we're not going to let this one game define our season," said Geezy. "We need to get back to work, and get ready to finish this year out strong. From our vantage point, we still have a lot of football left to play and still have a shot at 10 wins, something that hasn't happened for our program in a long time."

Bryant-Denny Stadium was absolutely lit for Saturday night's crucial SEC West contest.

Bama sophomore QB Matt Thompson (#6) was hyped up as he led his team out of the tunnel with a spot in the SEC Championship Game on the line.

Tigers QB Rob Mason had a rough night in Tuscaloosa, including being sacked on each of his team's first two offensive plays during an early three and out.

Senior LB Ryan Hart's interception off of a deflection was returned 41 yards for a score that put Bama up 16-7 in the second quarter and completely changed the tone of the game.

Speedy junior slot WR Randy Payne gave the LSU secondary fits all evening, amassing a career-best 9 receptions for 124 yards, including this 15-yard touchdown that made the score 26-14 in the third quarter.

In what is surely the first of many battles between the two of them, blue chip freshman WR Henry Oliver got the best of 4-star freshman CB Ryan Carter on this 58-yard touchdown that gave the Tide a commanding 33-14 third quarter advantage.

It was all smiles for the Alabama cheerleaders as their team looked well on their way to wrapping up the SEC West division, up big in the second half.

Alabama true freshman DE Larry Shelton, the nation's #1 high school recruit this past year, came away with a sack on Saturday, giving him a team-high 7 1/2 on the season.

As he has been for most of this season and for most of their careers together, TE Lucas Rodgers was Mason's favorite target on the night, hauling in 6 receptions for 114 yards.

SS Patrick Humphrey, a player head coach D. Geezy picked on last season as Tulane's offensive play-caller, got the last laugh against the veteran head coach when he came away with this fourth quarter interception in the end zone with 5:30 remaining and with Bama up 36-21.

True freshman LB Will McNeal brought down Thompson for a sack late in the third quarter, giving him a team-high 7 on the year. Unfortunately for the Tigers however, McNeal sprained his elbow on the play and was not able to return, and his services would be severely missed in the fourth quarter.

As he has done so often this season, junior nickel CB Jerome Harmon came up with a big play when his team needed it, this time stepping in front of Payne for an interception that was returned 46 yards for a touchdown that cut the Tigers' deficit to 36-28 late.

On his team's very next offensive play from scrimmage following Harmon's pick six, RB Alex Moore, a junior college transfer playing in his first season with Alabama, essentially put the game out of reach with this 85-yard touchdown that made the score 43-28 with 4:17 to go.

Mike the Tiger could do nothing but bow at the magnificent performance RB Scottie Rodgers put on as his fourth touchdown of the night cut LSU's deficit to 43-35 with just three minutes to go. Unfortunately it was too little too late though, as that would be the last time the Tigers possessed the football.

Alabama players rushed the field as the Tide secured their third SEC West division title in the past four seasons and appear to be poised for another possibly national title game shot.

Freshman CB Ryan Carter walked off the field dejected after his team's defense gave up over 600 yards of total offense and saw their SEC Championship dreams go up in smoke.

Well that one hurts but maybe you can run the table and get a good bowl.

Wow, that's a tough loss against Alabama. To be down 33-14 heading into the 4th quarter against this Alabama team, and then to bring it within eight points is pretty impressive. If you had prevented them from scoring in the last quarter, you would've one. Either way, this being your first season with LSU, you have brought them to be able to fight for the SEC West title already and I suspect that Geezy will lead the Tigers to an SEC championship game soon.

Yeah this was a painful loss for sure, especially after the two week build-up. I never imagined we'd get so close to a possible SEC title game berth in year one, but in a way, it felt realistic for this team to eventually run into a mountain it could not climb.

Funny you mention getting into a good bowl - in addition to the now failed goal of winning the SEC, a January bowl game is actually one of Coach Geezy's goals from the A.D., along with finishing in the Top 25; so yes, we still have a lot to play for here down the stretch.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, JP. At the end of the day, in my eyes, this game boiled down to three things:

                                1. We turned the ball over three times, including one that was a pick-six and another that took at least a field goal off of the board. We lost by 8, so that's literally the 10 points we needed right there for the win.

                                2. We went just 1 of 6 on third downs. This equaled no sustained drives, which prevented us from getting a red-hot Scottie Rodgers more carries.

                                3. Perhaps a direct result of #2, they out-possessed us, running a whopping 78 offensive plays compared to just 45 for us. I can't remember the last time, if ever, I have seen a play disparity in the negative like that for my team. In my head, it lead to a tired defense at the end, which gave up an 85-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and also could not get off the field at the end of the game.

That said, as I have always stated throughout this entire dynasty report trilogy since the beginning, the losses are what keeps us coming back, especially when they come in big games. This motivates me even more for next season, so once I was over the initial disappointment, this game result is an overall positive for the dynasty report as a whole. Now, I am just focused on finishing the year strong and building up some momentum heading into next season.
