Bulls land seven commitments over the weekend as they crack top five in Coaches Poll

On the same weekend that the USF Bulls reached the top five of both the AP and Coaches Poll for the first time in nearly a decade, they received seven commitments and are on the verge of receiving some more.

Four-star DT Ben Jennings, three-star CB Bradley Bentley, three-star LB John Jacobs, three-star OLB James Tucker, three-star CB Michael Bush, three-star DE Taylor Fletcher and three-star DT Chris Allen all were on campus this weekend and all of them committed by Monday morning.

The only players that were on campus that did not commit are four-star quarterback David Johnson and four-star running back David Ross, two out of state prospects from the state of Georgia that many experts are picking to select USF any day now.

The seven additions plus Johnson and Ross' likely commitments along with three-star defensive tackle Ben Woodard would almost certainly make it a wrap for USF's 2017 recruiting cycle.

As Bulls and Golden Knights both land in the top fifteen of the AP Poll, the Big 12 pays close attention

The Big 12 has been stodgy – to be kind – when it comes to expanding its product. Some don’t want to share the pie, some got cold feet, some just couldn’t find the right fit, and they’re all right in their own ways. But as this week showed, it’s time to change this up.

The Big 12 had to do all it could to keep the foxes out of the henhouse to take more of its programs, and now it’s a weaker overall product without Texas A&M, Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado.

USF and UCF both find themselves ranked in the top fifteen of the latest AP Poll, the Bulls coming in at number five and UCF a few spots behind them at thirteen. The average attendance of USF's games this season? 65,212. UCF? 45,323. They are both home to some of the biggest media markets in the country and with their addition to a conference like say, the Big 12, they would be adding the state of Florida into the mix from both a media standpoint as well as recruiting.

According to reports, officials from both schools have begun 'preliminary' discussions with Big 12 officials but nothing is set yet.

UCF is still trying to gear up the interest in Orlando to get the fans out on a regular basis, and USF needs to do this for a few more years to get the stability needed to make going to games a habit.

But how many people were at, say, Rutgers games late in the year? Is Maryland selling out the house? Did the Big Ten care all that much? Not really – the BTN deal is solid, which means it doesn’t matter that 12 people show up for Illinois games, too.

This is about more than attendance – it’s about expanding the brand. Expanding the TV possibilities, Generating a bigger reach. Do you really think the Big Ten even cares one lick about Maryland and Rutgers? Nope, but it can say it’s in the New York/New Jersey and Baltimore/DC markets now. There were plenty of good seats available at several Big 12 schools throughout this season, but the league’s problem continues to be its closed up world. If you don’t care about Texas-Oklahoma based schools, the conference probably isn't your cup of tea.

USF has around 50,000 students, UCF around 65,000, and while a lot are commuters, that’s still a massive, massive base to draw from. Create a consistent winner at either one, roll in an Oklahoma or a Texas once in a while, and boom. You’ve built this thing up.

You get Tampa, Orlando, and the whole I-4 corridor. You expand your recruiting base. You expand your TV markets to a whole other level, and you expand your brand.

'Georgia Bulls' trend continues as Bulls land four-star QB Johnson, four-star HB Ross

In the last two weekends, the USF Bulls have received nine commitments with the final two coming in this Monday in the form of four-star QB David Johnson and four-star HB David Ross with the two Davids hailing out of the state of Georgia.

Johnson was also recruited by Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and Nebraska, giving the Bulls yet another big recruiting win over Power 5 schools while they also beat out Ole Miss, Rutgers, Missouri and Utah for Ross.

Johnson is an interesting prospect at six-foot-three, 208 pounds with decent mobility and has been described by those within the program as a bigger, more accurate Steven McKenzie. It'll be interesting to see how he fits into the picture the next few seasons at quarterback. Grant Oliver's play has given him a decent hold on the starting job and should be the Bulls starter for the next two seasons. Johnson will compete with redshirt freshmen Steven McKenzie and Mario Greer and true freshman Brandon Tidwell for the starting job in two seasons.

Ross fits the mold of a what head coach Malcolm Francois has typically brought in at the position. He's a physical running back at six-foot-one and 221 pounds but also has decent top end speed. He'd be a mix between Richard Miller and Leon Ward without the shiftiness of Ward.

The additions of Johnson and Ross give USF the 8th ranked recruiting class in the country and now have 13 players projected to be on the roster for next season from the state of Georgia. Florida still leads by a large margin with 52 projected players but given that the next closest state after Georgia is Mississippi with two, it's clear that USF has established a pipeline to the Peach State.

The offense just felt stagnant all game and couldn't really finish drives. Without a dual threat at QB, the running game/playbook is a bit constipated.

Bulls lose star freshman safety Johnson to arm injury for the season

South Florida Bulls fans weekend just keeps getting worse. In the same game that the Bulls undefeated season came to a screeching halt against the win-less Syracuse Orange, they also lost true freshman safety Dan Johnson for the season after the former five-star recruit fractured his upper arm.

Johnson had started every game for the Bulls and was third on the team in tackles with 29. Replacing Johnson will most likely be redshirt sophomore Leonard Lilly, who was once a promising recruit himself. Lilly has struggled to get on the field in his three years at USF, redshirting as a freshman and then mainly playing special teams last season.

He has four tackles on the year and will likely rotate at safety along with junior Tavarious Bailey who was in the same class as Bailey and physical play has earned him some defensive snaps this year in the rotation at safety with fourteen tackles and an interception.
