Don't like the playcall there on 3rd down, but I respect Barkley being aggressive and trying to win things right there and trusting the defense to make a play if it doesn't work out. That screenshot of the D-lineman making the swat on the 4th down play is really dope, the big fella got up!

Crazy to see how some of the national landscape has turned out... Minny having their only loss be their opponent's only win is absolutely wild. Georgia-UNC would probably be the best national championship matchup to see for sure; OSU doesn't deserve it with two losses, and I would love to see that UNC QB have a chance to finish one of the most impressive single season displays with a title as well. Clemson should be a great matchup for you like Careless said if it comes true, not only for their stature as a school but also as a good litmus test for where your program stacks up nationally. Although, if BJ leaves then the entire program will be turned upside down anyways!
We were cruising until we weren't haha. BJ got greedy on the first pick, some bad luck on the fumble. Pretty bad playcall on 3rd and goal in hindsight, but we'd just been stuffed on the ground, run game was bad all day and we've been pretty good at those quick hitters inside the 10. Games like this where he turns it over are why I think BJ should and will stay, he's clearly got some weaknesses and as of right now, has had one season with 18 picks and another with 11 and then 10 fumbles on top of that. We definitely trusted our defense,.Jackson didn't throw well all game, he actually had an man open deep on the play right before that swat but he didn't place the ball in the right spot.

The landscape is crazy this season. Definitely hoping UNC avenges their loss to NC State, they deserve a title berth. I was pulling for Minnesota, had a soft spot for them ever since Cane's legendary Minnesota series on YT, cannot believe they lost to that godawful Rutgers team. Ohio State being #2 is odd, I think UNC should be there, I wanna see Graham in the natty too man, 44 scores no picks is nuts. Illinois got screwed with the 11 game season glitch, they ended up 9-2, but they could still sneak in to #2 with a Big Ten title.

Clemson have the best QB in the nation, talent wise. I forget his name, but he has 98 THP, 99 THA, 96 AWR from what I remember. Not a runner, but his arm is insane. It'll be a fun test, but they are very very good. We just have Henderson haha.

It was a good win, I'm glad it didn't slip away. 8-4 is way better than 7-5. Clemson will be a fun matchup, but I don't really see us as being on the verge of being a top team, we've just gotten very lucky with Henderson, who was a 3 star gem, came in around 77 and then has progressed incredibly over the last 2 years. He takes us from a 4-6 win AAC minnow to an 8-4 team that almost beat 11-1 UCF. I really hope he stays haha.

Same! I wanna see their QB Graham in the title game.

Thanks for checking in guys! I'm gonna get the conference title week preview and results out, what that means for the polls, then Heisman along with a look at how recruiting is going before I preview bowl week. Stay tuned for all that over the next few days.

Big wins by both UCLA and Oregon State over instate rivals. That should really help boost the old resume.

Happy to see the Huskies fall to the Coug's too.

Not really sure how a 3 loss Gators team is ranked ahead of a 1 loss CSU team but it seem's to happen every year.

        Conference Championship Week Preview

Report by Isaac Robinson - December 4th, 2019

The 2019 regular season has come and gone, and sadly our Swarm won't be playing for an AAC title game, despite improving from 6-6 to 8-4, spurred on by Maxwell and Walter Camp finalist B.J. Henderson. But there's a lot at stake this week, and we're breaking it all down for you.

        AAC Championship - #21 Houston (9-3, 7-2) @ #13 UCF (11-1, 8-1)

Redshirt freshman Justin Cohen has emerged as one of the nation's best signal-callers, throwing for 3331 yards and 42 scores on 71.6%, while throwing just 5 picks. Houston can run too: bruiser David Parker has posted 898 yards and 4 scores, averaging an impressive 6.3 yards a carry, while the speedier Calvin Page has racked up 549 yards and 10 scores. Cohen and 3rd stringer Matt Clarke have each chipped in with 268 and 265 yards, respectively, and 3 scores each.

Cohen's counterpart, Jeff Thomas, has been good, throwing for 3017 yards and 28 scores, while also running for 600. He would have had his team sitting at 12-0, but for the lone game he missed due to injury, where the Knights fell to Temple. UCF have ran well: tailback Rob Peterson has over 1000 yards on the season. This one comes down to who can score more. UCF's defense ranks 7th in the nation in terms of yardage, but has given up 35+ points to the likes of USF, FIU and Louisville. Houston have won 7 straight after 3 close losses early in the year, with 5 of those wins coming by 14 or more points.

Edge: Houston. They're hot, and Justin Cohen is arguably the best QB in college.

        PAC 12 Championship - #23 UCLA (9-3, 7-2) @ #9 Washington (10-2, 7-2)

UCLA have underwhelmed. No way around it. On paper, they should be top 5. But they've been mediocre defensively, and managed just 24 points in a loss to 6-5 Colorado. Washington, too, have disappointed. They weren't expected to do too well, but ripped off 8 straight wins after an early loss to USC, and were ranked in the top 5 before losing to rivals Washington State, 28-23 despite a 318 yard, 2 score performace from QB Curtis Williams. Had they won that game, they'd likely sit at #4, with a shot at the title game. Unlike UCLA, Washington have defended well: they rank #13 in the nation in terms of total defense, to the Bruins' #53.

Edge: Washington. UCLA can't defend, and Washington can match them offensively. A few stops will win them this game.

        Big Ten Championship - #6 Illinois (9-2, 8-1) @ #11 Minnesota (11-1, 8-1)

Ah, Minnesota. The darlings of the CFB world for 10 weeks, sitting at #2... then they lost by 3 to a Rutgers team that finished 1-11. That loss ruins the best season in school history, and you've gotta wonder if the Gophers will be distracted by that loss this Saturday. They did beat Michigan State 49-30 last week, but Illinois are a whole lot better. These teams are pretty similar: both scoring over 40 points a game with overall mediocre defenses. Minnesota are #4 against the run, but #103 against the pass, so Illinois should look to carve them up.

This is a QB battle. Heisman frontrunner Kurt Alfred hasn't had a bad game all year, even posting 303 and 4 scores to just 1 pick against Rutgers. The 4th year starter has thrown for 3790 yards and 45 scores on 73% completions, while showing his dual-threat ability with 619 rushing yards and 10 more scores. He's thrown just 5 picks this year, and just 8 in the last 3 seasons. His counterpart is a first year starter who's been a revelation for the Illini: Emmanuel Bryant. Also a dual-threat, Bryant has thrown for 2695 yards, 27 scores, and 7 picks, while completing 65% of his throws. He's ran for 791 and 7 more scores.

Edge: Minnesota. Alfred is a stud, and his supporting cast is better.

        C-USA Championship - Middle Tennessee State (7-5, 6-2) @ Old Dominion (9-3, 8-0)

ODU lost by just 2 to #2 Ohio State earlier this season, while MTSU got shellacked by #14 Texas. They boast a better offense and a better defense. Andrew Carter is one of the best non-P5 QBs in the nation, with over 3300 yards and 40 scores through the air this season.

Edge: ODU. They've been better this season, haven't lost a game by more than 10 points, and are riding a 6 game win streak.

        SEC Championship - #10 LSU (9-3, 6-2) @ #1 Georgia (12-0, 8-0)

LSU were pegged as a top 5 team before the year. They've lost 3 times, but those losses were by 1, 6 in OT, and 3. Their defense hasn't performed as well as expected, but the offense has scored 43.1 PPG, good for #2 in the nation. Georgia are 12-0, but they haven't beaten any good teams convincingly, and have had 5 games decided by 7 or less points. Sophomore QB Rondell Holloway has been a great replacement for the injured J.D. Guillory, but he's really all they've got. The supporting cast is good, not great and the defense isn't winning the Bulldogs the game against an LSU team this good. LSU's Marques Johnson and Xavier Pryor are a great 1-2 punch, with Johnson actually leading the Heisman race before Pryor's return from injury.

Edge: Georgia. They're 12-0, and have gotten the job done in every game so far. LSU could steal this one, but no one has tripped the Bulldogs up yet.

        MWC Championship - #5 Colorado State (11-1, 7-1) @ #12 Fresno State (10-2, 8-0)

Colorado State are another team that almost went unbeaten. They fell to Air Force's option attack, and that's where Fresno State is going to be able to hurt them: on the ground. The Bulldogs have rushed for 235 yards a game this season. Matt Harrison leads the way with 1291 yards, then backup Jeff Walter with 638, and finally QB Arnold Newby with 569. The Rams depend on Nolan Sullivan. He's a heady QB who lacks the arm talent to ever be a P5 star, but he's been great in the MWC: 3483 yards, 32 scores, 10 picks in his first year starting. Fresno State, however, have the nation's 8th best pass D, giving up just 185.7 yards a game through the air. Whoever wins that matchup wins the game.

Edge: Fresno State. Their run game and pass defense should be enough to get them their 9th straight win.

        ACC Championship - #25 NC State (8-4, 7-2) @ #3 North Carolina (11-1, 8-1)

UNC's Mike Graham is having an all-time great season: 3674 passing yards, 44 scores, no picks, 74% completion percentage. And he's ran for 881 with 7 scores. UNC have the nation's best offense (44.8 PPG, 551 YPG) and the #8 defense (361 YPG). The kicker: UNC lost to NC State in late October, 34-30, as the Wolf Pack mounted a 4th quarter comeback to score the winning touchdown with 3:36 left.

Graham has led the Tar Heels to ACC championships in each of the last 2 seasons after the school hadn't won one since 1980. He's already a Tar Heel legend, but going out by winning the school their first ever national championship would be a storybook ending to his college career. This is essentially a play-in game for #3 UNC, as #2 Ohio State have one more loss and aren't in the Big Ten title game. Add to that the bitter rivalry between these teams, and we should be in for a treat.

Edge: UNC. Graham is a man on a mission, and he's got the playmakers he needs.

        Big 12 Championship - #7 Tulsa (10-2, 7-2) @ #18 SMU (9-3, 7-2)

Tulsa won the AAC last year, and will look to become the first team ever to win separate conferences in back-to-back years. (Author's note: no idea if that's actually true, I'm just assuming haha)

Both of these teams are elite defensively, with SMU at #2 and Tulsa @ #3. (It really is a new look big 12.) But Tulsa, led by senior Rian Milton, have the #9 offense and have a fantastic +12 turnover differential. SMU? #93 and +1. Tulsa were the latest team to remind us that Texas isn't back, (and may never be), beating the Longhorns 49-24 early in the year, but then did fall to SMU two weeks later in a hard fought 28-23 battle. The Mustangs did beat Texas as well, but only by 6, and fell to 6-6 TCU by 20 points.

Edge: Tulsa. They'll be better prepared for the SMU defense this time around.

        MAC Championship - Miami OH (5-7, 5-4) @ Central Michigan (11-1, 9-0)

There's not much to say here. Central Michigan are an order of magnitude better than everyone else in the MAC. Joe Novak threw for 3441 yards and 36 scores, he's a future pro. CMU's only loss came by 4, to #15 Cincinnati.

Edge: CMU. This could get ugly.

It'll be interesting to see which CAC's get which offers.

Didn't know you were a Wazzu guy, although I should have guessed since you used them in your last dynasty.

Rankings are weird, CMU went 11-1 and can't get a look in, tons of 8-4 teams in the 15-25 range, and Ohio State are somehow #2 ahead of 11-1 UNC.

          Thanks for the comment!

            Conference Championship Week Review

Report by Isaac Robinson - December 8th, 2019

WHAT A DAY! You never know who's going to win in college football, and yesterday certainly proved that. Let's get into the results.

            SEC Championship: #4 LSU 45, #7 Georgia 14

Well, Georgia finally got tripped up. It was ugly. LSU were up 35-7 at the half, as they got 161 rushing yards from Marques Johnson and 150 Xavier Pryor on their way to a rout. Georgia's Rondell Holloway was knocked out of the game early, joining former starter J.D. Guillory on the injured list. Freshman third-stringer George Mirvil looked out of his depth (it was his first game action), and he completed just 5 of 13 passes with an interception.

            PAC-12 Championship: #8 Washington 38, UCLA 35

I called this one. Washington edged out UCLA, going up 28-7 in the first half and withstanding the onslaught to eke out a win on a go-ahead score with 1:34 left. Mike Hayden threw a pick, Curtis Williams didn't. That ultimately decided it.

            Big Ten Championship: #5 Illinois 42, #15 Minnesota 31

Disappointing end to this season for Minnesota. They won't even make a BCS bowl after a 10-0 start. Kurt Alfred is still winning the Heisman, deservedly so, as he posted 217 passing yards and 2 scores on 21/26, while also topping the 100 yard mark on the ground. But he didn't get defensive help. Emmanuel Bryant completed 18 of 20 passes for 185 yards and 3 scores, and tailback Jake Crowder ran for 151 and 2 scores.

C-USA Championship: Old Dominion 49, Middle Tennessee State 37

Andrew Carter went for 326 yards and 5 scores. Hard to overcome that if you're MTSU. Still, to make the CCG after starting 1-4 is very impressive, and the Blue Raiders should hold their heads high.

            AAC Championship: #11 UCF 49, #25 Houston 44

Jeff Thomas threw an early pick-6 and then was perfect the rest of the way, throwing for 330 yards and 3 scores while Rob Peterson ran for 127 and 2 TD. Justin Cohen was predictably excellent, completing 13 of 16 pases for 189 yards and 4 scores. But why only 16 passes? Houston should have put this one in his hands. Big mistake there, but the Cougars are a team to watch next year.

MWC Championship: #9 Fresno State 49, #12 Colorado State 28

Fresno State went up 28-0 after a quarter, and that was enough. Nolan Sullivan hurt his arm in the 3rd, and backup Tyler Randolph was horrible, throwing a game-sealing pick-six late in the 3rd and completing just 5 of 17 throws.

            Big 12 Championship: #6 Tulsa 28, #22 SMU 27

Rian Milton figured out this Mustang defense the second time around, completing 16 of 19 passes for 265 yards, 3 scores and a pick. He came up big when it mattered, with 2 TD passes in the 4th as he continues to maks his case to be drafted come April.

MAC Championship: Miami OH 43, Central Michigan 20

Well, I said this could get ugly. It did, but not in the way anyone expected. Miami of Ohio beat the brakes off of CMU, holding Joe Novak under 50% passing and to just 174 yards, with no scores. On the other hand, David Wallace turned in his best game of the season, going off for 315 and 3 scores to bring his team's record to 6-7.

ACC Championship: #2 North Carolina 42, NC State 40

On a day of great games, this one topped them all. Mike Graham left the game early after taking a hard shot to his throwing shoulder. He wouldn't return, but backup Aaron Moore had the Tar Heels up 28-10 at the half, and it looked like they'd cruise to a win.

NC State never rolled over though, and they roared back, going on a 24-7 run from early in the 3rd to early in the 4th, making it 35-26 entering the 4th. Moore led a good drive that looked like it might be the one to put away the game, but as his team approached the red zone, he was pressured into throwing a bad pass that went 75 yards the other way for a huge pick-six. 35-33. But Moore showed composure, leading a long drive that ended in a Lance Fowler touchdown from 3 yards out to make it 42-33, and the defense held strong, holding the lead and securing the 3rd consecutive ACC title for the Tar Heels.

So what does all this mean for the polls? Well, UNC rise to #2, but you might be surprised at who's on top. It's Ohio State, who did not play for a conference championship and were blown out by #15 Minnesota in week 8, 42-16. 10-2 Illinois, who won the Big Ten and only lost to Ohio State by a touchdown, will certainly feel hard done by here. The full top 25 can be found below.

Y2 Bowl Preview - Russell Athletic Bowl @ #21 Miami

                Coach Barkley's Take

This Miami team is LOADED on offense. Joel Callahan is a baller. He's big (6'4, 217), fast, and can sling it. He's a risk-taker, but he's good enough to make it work. Chris Williams and William McCray are both future NFL backs, and they're going to look to run it right at us all day. Jared Randall was injured for most of the year, but he's back for his last college game and will be looking to go out with a bang. Past him though, I'm not too worried about these receivers: They're not fast, with the exception of Fred Scott, but he's only caught 14 balls all year.

Defensively, the line is the main attraction. Erik Simmons and Jeff Galloway may be the best DT pairing in the nation, and Pat Young is an elite run stuffing end. Where we can hurt them is through the air. This corner group isn't great, and we have the speed to take the top off with Robert Coley and the returning Eric Monroe. Those nickel and dime guys are gonna need safety help.

This is a winnable game, but we'll need B.J. to have a ridiculously good game to pull off the upset.

Early Signing Period: Swarm secure 16 enrollees

Report by Isaac Robinson - December 21st, 2019

Westlake State have had a great season, sitting at 8-4 heading into bowl week on the back of a great year from star QB B.J. Henderson. But Henderson is eligible for the draft this spring, and you never know what a player will choose to do. With that in mind, let's take a look at the Swarm's lone QB signee: Kevin Houston.

Houston (6'3, 200, #68 QB) is a 3 star recruit from Miamisburg, OH. He runs a reported 4.65 40. Per 247, Houston is a "smart, athletic, accurate but weak-armed QB who looks for the safe option first." Houston's ability to mesh with Dion Barkley's vertical passing-based offense is a big question mark, and with the strong-armed, but inaccurate Barrett Phillips on the roster, Houston will face an uphill battle to win the starting job whenever Henderson leaves.

Adding to the offensive backfield is tailback Aaron Jefferson (5'10, 225, #110 HB). This guy was slept on coming out of Fairview Park, OH. AT 5'10, 225, he runs a 4.32 40. This guy will run past you and through you. The knocks on him are that he relied too much on his physical gifts in high school against weak competition, and that he can't catch. But with Mark Montgomery leaving, Westlake State will be looking for a new #1 back, and we could see Jefferson challenge for that spot.

Westlake State have gone hard after DBs and have secured a trio of 3 star recruits who could contribute early. Ernie Mills (5'9, 183, #26 CB) is an elite press corner who can match up with anyone in man. He's small and lack great top end speed, but he's great in the first 10 yards of a route. Ibrahim Dudley (6'0, 203, #67 CB) is listed as a corner, but our sources tell us the 6'0, 203 pounder will likely be moved to safety to capitalize on his run stopping ability and to hide his mediocre speed. Lastly, Paul Pitts (5'11, 180, #70 CB) isn't quite as good as those two, but he's another hard hitter who profiles as a good safety.

At OLB, Stephen Parham (6'5, 223, #37 OLB) is intriguing. He's got the length and skills to rush the passer, but has enough speed and coverage ability to stick with tight ends. He struggles against the run, so he needs some time, but he looks promising.

Westlake State have signed 16 prospects in total: twelve 3*, three 2* and 1 1*. Heading into the offseason recruiting period, the offensive line is to be the main focus for the Swarm.

Minnesota had a really bizarre season. Were there any injuries that I missed?

I'm thinking BJ has a nice game on the ground and will be able to bounce to the outside quite a bit. Same with the backs, especially with Nelson's speed.

Not that I'm aware of. Plus their QB went for like 300 and 3 scores every game, even the losses. Really odd year for them, I agree.

I'm going to look to establish the run early, running outside is always tough for us just because of how bad our line is, so we'll see. Stretches and sweeps are really hit or miss. I want to open up the play action early so we can hit them deep though, we have the speed advantage.

Thanks for following and stay tuned for the bowl, I've got a lot of time this week so I'm gonna try and wrap the season soon.

5'10", 225, and a 4.32 40??? Jefferson is going to be a monster. Interesting to see where your QB situation goes if BJ leaves, but like you said he will probably be back for one more go around. Bowl game should be fun, a really good test, plus will let BJ see if he is ready for the next step. Shame that Georgia lost, I feel like that matchup with UNC would've been more exciting, but NCAA gonna NCAA, haha.

Really excited to see what Jefferson does for you with those attributes, especially if Henderson decides to stay for another season. Miami isn't quite the test that Clemson would have been probably, but it's still a very talented program and will be a true measure of where Westlake stands on the national scale!

I wanted to see Georgia-UNC too tbh, Ohio State didn't even win the Big Ten. Times like this I wish I had the editor, but I've come to terms with the fact that it doesn't work for anything with the Swarm in it. Bowl should be fun, I agree, and if Henderson can put up a clean turnover-free game, his case to go pro would be pretty solid. I've maintained that I doubt he leaves, just because NCAA doesn't really force players pro early, but you never know. Would throw us for a loop, that's for sure.

I'm glad we have Miami just because they're more beatable. Clemson is a bit too good for us to even have a shot, Miami should be a bit more fun. I think we win if BJ doesn't turn it over.

Both you guys brought up Jefferson, I'm so hyped to get him too. He's got great ratings, solid BTK, decent TRK. He's not shifty and can't catch, but I expect him to split carries with Nelson since Kevin Campbell is probably transferring. If BJ leaves and we have to lean on the run more, I wouldn't be surprised to see him show out as a freshman.

Thanks for commenting guys! Gonna play Miami today, not sure if I'll get it out today or tomorrow though.

Report by Isaac Robinson | December 29th, 2019

Black And Yellow, Black And Yellow: Swarm don alternate black uniforms, dominate #21 Miami to win first ever bowl

Huge game from Henderson to topple #21 'Canes -- Defense steps up -- Henderson's future up in the air

Dion Barkley and B.J. Henderson have brought Westlake State to relevancy

Orlando, FL -- "I'm the f--kin man, y'all don't get it do ya?" shouted B.J. Henderson as he rapped along to Drake's "The Motto", one of the many hits that could be heard heard thumping from the Swarm locker room long after their 41-21 Russell Athletic Bowl win over the #21 Miami Hurricanes.

Many didn't get it, and doubted the former 3 star recruit, saying he was too turnover-prone and not durable enough to succeed as a D1 QB. Westlake State were the only FBS school to offer Henderson a full ride as a QB, with Nevada and Texas Tech offering him a spot to play wideout.

Henderson just gave all his doubters the finger, as he started his 22nd consecutive game and played maybe the best football he's ever played, lifting the Swarm to a 41-21 dismantling of Miami behind 335 passing yards, 119 rushing yards, and 4 total scores with no turnovers.

He was helped by a Swarm defense that was seemingly possessed, rising to the occasion to keep Miami to just 7 points in the first 3 quarters, and holding star QB Joel Callahan to 9/25 passing, as well as forcing 3 turnovers.

Westlake State jumped out to a 10 point lead in the first, as Miami QB Joel Callahan first fumbled, then threw an interception to keep the ball out of his team's hands. Miami wouldn't score until late in the second, when Jared Randall, who isn't very fleet of foot, snuck behind everyone for a 54 yard score with 35 seconds to go before the half. But this was the Swarm's day. B.J. Henderson would connect with Josh Roach for a 75 yard score, as Miami safety Curtis Haynes went for a spectacular pick, but whiffed on it, letting Roach catch the ball and go the distance.

This play was a real turning point

Westlake State led 17-7, and dominated the 3rd quarter, scoring 10 points and again keeping Miami off the board, as Callahan threw another pick, and a 16 play drive that ended in a short field goal left just 40 seconds in the quarter. The Swarm scored again early in the 4th after Miami went 4 and out to make it 34-7, and that was all she wrote. Randall somehow got open deep again for a 79 yard score, and after a Swarm touchdown, a 45 yard scramble from Callahan set up a 14 yard screen pass to William McCray for a score, but it was too little, too late for the Hurricanes.

"It was huge, to get out to that early lead," said Dion Barkley. "They couldn't lean on their run game, that's their big strength. McCray and Williams only touched it like 10 times, they never got a chance to get going. We rattled their QB in the first and he never really recovered."

                              Callahan's first INT

Indeed, the Hurricanes only gave McCray 7 carries, and Williams just 3. McCray fared well, picking up 40 yards, while Williams had no net gain, but it's hardly fair to judge the dynamic duo off of 10 snaps. Callahan's turnovers, and excellent ball control from the Swarm were what decided this one.

The question now on everyone's mind: Will B.J. Henderson go pro? He finishes his junior year with 4037 passing yards (66.2 completion percentage), 1100 rushing yards, 40 passing scores and 11 rushing scores with just 11 interceptions, which is very good considering how aggressively he plays. Those are elite numbers, but his sample size is just one year. In 2018, he threw a nation-leading 18 picks with just 18 scores, completing only 56% of his throws.

Henderson declined to answer the question, saying only: "I appreciate everything Coach Barkley and the rest of the staff here have done. I'm glad I was able to help us get our first bowl win. Let's celebrate that, I'll think about the future later!"

He may not want to think about it yet, but analysts and fans alike took to Twitter to express their surprise at his and Westlake State's (but mainly his) performance. Skip Bayless compared Henderson to Minnesota's Heisman winner Kurt Alfred, tweeting "Give me BJ Henderson over Alfred any day. Alfred choked @ Rutgers, in CCG vs Illinois. BJ is a BALLER."

If this was Henderson's last appearance for the Swarm, he sure went out in style.
