    2021 SEASON, GAME 2

Air Force receiver Marcus McConnell dives into the end zone for one of his two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

    Start the hype train?
    Taylor building Heisman credentials
after big game against Texas State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Is it too early to start using the “H” in the same sentence with Trey Taylor?

If he continues playing like he has in his first two career starts, the junior running back from Air Force will find his name in the Heisman conversation.

Taylor ran 20 times for 122 yards and three touchdowns and caught five passes for 45 yards in the Falcons’ 59-28 dismantling of Texas State on Sept. 11, 2021.

In two games, Taylor has 263 yards and six touchdowns on 43 carries. He’s caught eight passes for 88 yards.

“It’s early, fellas! Slow your roll a bit!” Air Force coach B-Dawg said when Taylor’s Heisman candidacy was broached after the game. “We haven’t exactly played the toughest defenses around so far. Let’s see how things go when we take on the better teams on our schedule.”

The highlight for Taylor was a 30-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-two with 2:26 left in the third quarter. The Bobcats bunched up the middle of their defense, making them vulnerable on the edge when B-Dawg called “strong stretch.”

For the Air Force offense, it was like shooting fish in a barrel, as the Falcons had a stretch in which they scored six touchdowns in seven drives. They didn’t have to punt until after Marcus McConnell dropped a pass on third-and-seven early in the fourth quarter.

McConnell made up for it by grabbing two touchdown passes from backup quarterback Ben Brittain down the stretch, passes that had some grumbling that B-Dawg was being a stat hoe and running up the score.

“It’s a long season,” he said. “You never know if Ben or Marcus will be asked to play big roles for us at some point. It’s better to have them making plays against live bullets now so they’re prepared in case they play in a meaningful situation later.”

That’s silliness, of course. Injuries that cost players games rarely happen in NCAA ’14, with even game-ending injuries taking place sparingly. However, Air Force did have its first injury in the four years of this dynasty that will cost a player games when wide receiver Luc Sturbelle sustained a torn pectoral muscle returning a punt in the second quarter. He's expected to miss two games.

“That was fun,” B-Dawg said. “I wish we had more so depth actually mattered.”

Zachary Larrier was completely at ease running the offense in his second career start, going 25-for-33 for 275 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Texas State scored on its first possession, but Air Force scored 38 straight points after that. Quartereback Matt McDonald was 30-for-37 for 413 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

“He had big numbers in the air, but their ground game was literally nonexistent,” B-Dawg said. “They ran the ball only five times with anyone other than their quarterback, and he didn’t exactly scare us when he did carry the ball.”

The Bobcats had only 27 yards on 17 carries.

I knew that game would strike a nerve with you. I scheduled that way before you became a regular on my dynasty reports. I should schedule schools that regular readers follow in real life. Hawaii shows up on my schedule twice every four years, so Lopaka can see how his boys are doing in my 'nasty.

          2021 SEASON, GAME 3

Gary Mossop intercepts a pass with 5:54 left in the fourth quarter on what would prove to be Fresno State’s final
          offensive play of the game.

          THE DRIVE
Air Force milks final 5:53 off clock
to finish off Fresno State, 28-24

FRESNO, Calif. — You think of epic drives in football history and names like John Elway, Joe Montana and even Eli Manning come to mind.

What they had in common was that the most memorable drives of their careers ended with their teams celebrating in the end zone.

Air Force’s football team has its own version of The Drive, one which didn’t produce a single point, but was impressive in its own right.

The Falcons were able to grind out a drive that killed the final 5 minutes, 53 seconds of the game, allowing them to escape with a 28-24 victory over Frenso State on Sept. 25, 2021.

Air Force got the ball when cornerback Auston Deason picked off a deep ball near the goal line on second-and-16 with 5:53 left in the fourth quarter.

“I would’ve been happy just to have the pass batted down, because those types of passes always seem to produce an automatic six points,” Air Force coach B-Dawg said. “To actually get the turnover was huge.”

From there, quarterback Zachary Larrier engineered a 16-play, 93-yard drive that killed the clock. Larrier was 6-for-6 for 68 yards on the drive, hitting Trent Brown for a first down on third-and-10 with 4:50 left, Cameron Everts for a first down on third-and-five with 3:05 left and Hunter Williams for a 21-yard pass on second-and-12 with 2:04 remaining.

When Trey Taylor had a 3-yard run on third-and-one with 1:54 left and the Bulldogs out of timeouts, B-Dawg was feeling it.

“A drive doesn’t have to produce points to be epic,” B-Dawg said. “We were able to keep their offense on the sidelines for the last six minutes. That’s enormous for us, because I can’t trust our defense to keep holding them off.”

          Welcome to the end zone

Trent Brown led Air Force with 68 receptions last year, but was used mostly to move the chains. Of those 68 catches, only one produced a touchdown, even though he was second on the team with an average of 14.7 yards per reception.

So, it was a strange sight indeed to see Brown get in the end zone, not just once, but twice against Fresno State.

Brown opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown catch with 2:23 left in the first quarter and scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 25-yard reception from Larrier with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

On the winning touchdown, Brown ran an in route on third-and-10, caught the pass at the 14-yard line, then cut it upfield. A defender whiffed while attempting to make a tackle and Brown fought his way over the goal line. The 25-yard play was Air Force’s longest of the game.

Brown had seven catches for 105 yards. He already has three touchdown catches in the first three games of the season.

          Too scurrrred?

Air Force came into the game leading the nation in rush defense, allowing only 41.5 yards per game on the ground.

Did that intimidate Fresno State? It sure seemed like it.

Even though the game was close all the way, the Bulldogs had only eight runs that weren’t by quarterback Steven Comstock. Halfback Ronnie Rivers ran eight times for 15 yards and one touchdown.

This seems to be an early trend. In the last two games, Air Force’s opponents have run the ball only 13 times with someone who isn’t a quarterback.

          Fast starts

Larrier is off to a strong start as the replacement for record-breaking quarterback Donald Hammond, going 66-for-88 for 707 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions in the first three games. He has run 21 times for 91 yards and a score.

He’s not the only Falcon off to a fast start. Running back Trey Taylor has run 70 times for 372 yards and seven touchdowns, while catching 13 passes for 118 yards and atouchdown. Brown has 17 catches for 201 yards and three touchdowns.

Mark Monroe grabs his first career interception.

Milking out the clock to secure a close win is a very underrated feeling, especially when you're converting on some third and longs. Looks like the new starters are settling in quite nicely so far!

That drive was very satisfying. We're playing better defense after the first couple years of this dynasty, but I still get very nervous allowing the CPU to have the ball in the final minutes of a close game.

I'm breathing a sigh of relief that we seem to have an offense that doesn't revolved around chucking it deep to Remsberg at the first sign of trouble or having Hammond tuck it and run. There's hope.

Was going to comment on how I was wondering how your play-calling scheme might change with the roster that you're stuck with, but it looks like you've struck a very solid 50/50 balance through the first three games. Always good to start on a nice run to get the momentum rolling. Also have to say how impressive it is that your roster still looks so thoroughly ordinary into the 4th season, haha, as it's so easy if you try to exploit the system to end up with an overpowered roster really early. Very impressed that your team still looks so on brand so far!

I need to learn this "exploit the system" trick! I know there have been past versions of the game where I could start grabbing five-star guys right out of the gate, but they don't seem to have much interest in coming to Air Force. Maybe they didn't hear I waived the five-year military commitment.

Actually, after a frustrating first several years of recruiting, I watched a couple of videos on how to recruit on YouTube and came up with a much better class a few years down the road. It was almost "too" good, so I dialed back some of the coaching "power-ups" that helped me achieve that class.

Hunter Williams grabs one of five touchdown passes thrown by Zachary Larrier against Navy.

as Air Force sinks Midshipmen, 55-10

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Who would have thought that a Navy-Air Force football game would come down to the passing game?

More specifically, one team’s ability to excel through the air and another’s inability.

These two programs have been known in real life for focusing primarily on the ground game, but things have changed in the four years that this dynasty has been running.

Air Force junior Zachary Larrier vastly outdueled 90 OVR red-shirt junior Kevin Doyle of Navy, earning NCAA national Player of the Week for his performance in a 55-10 rout of the Midshipmen on Oct. 2, 2021.

Larrier had one of the best quarterback performances in B-Dawg’s long career at the sticks, going 29-for-34 for 340 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. That equated to a gaudy 217.8 quarterback rating.

What’s more, Larrier’s five touchdown passes went to five different receivers. Larrier also ran six times for 26 yards and two touchdowns.

Doyle, meanwhile, was 18-for-34 for 218 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He ran only three times for minus-12 yards. He was victimized by eight dropped passes.

“This isn’t your daddy’s Navy team anymore,” B-Dawg said. “They’re trying to become more of a balanced offensive team. They just don’t seem to have the pieces in place to pull off a passing attack yet.”

Brian Gray, an 86 OVR junior, played quarterback against Air Force in the past, but didn’t take a snap behind center. He did catch an 8-yard pass early in the game.

Navy ran only 16 times for two yards, which will surely enhance Air Force’s status as the No. 1 rushing defense in the country. The Falcons came in allowing 55.3 rushing yards per game, but were next-to-last allowing 314.3 passing yards.

Navy halfback C.J. Williams couldn’t get anything going, gaining only 12 yards on 12 carries with a long of six yards. A loss of four yards near the goal line, which ultimatetly led to Navy settling for a field goal, set the stage for his day. He’s an 86 OVR fifth-year senior.

After that field goal cut Air Force’s lead to 7-3 with 2:53 left in the first quarter. Air Force scored the next 31 points.

Air Force receiver Cameron Everts fights his way into the end zone.

I almost feel bad about the touchdown pass to Everts in the fourth quarter. He's a receiver who somehow ended up in my backfield when I mass-subbed and I think (if I recall correctly from a game played months ago) that he came in because the No. 2 halfback got fatigued. It was a simple screen pass that he was able to do more with than my running backs typically can.

I have a list of teams I'll run up the score against. They know who they are.

                          2021 RECRUITING UPDATE

Air Force lands 73 OVR offensive tackle

Air Force seems to be a magnet for offensive guards, but can’t seem to recruit tackles.

The Falcons’ luck may have changed with the commitment of Josh Watson.

Watson is the 52nd-ranked offensive tackle in the nation. The three-star prospect from LaJunta, Colo. is rated 73 OVR.

“Josh could be the building block for an actual legit offensive line,” Air Force coach B-Dawg said. “I’m excited to finally get a quality tackle.”

As if anyone cares, 51 OVR offensive guard Austin Parks of Whiteriver, Ariz. also committed to Air Force. Parks is the No. 164 guard in the country.

The Falcons lost OG-18 Nick Walker, who is 69 OVR, to Colorado State. Also going elsewhere is CB-49 Eddie Myrick, a 66 OVR Lewisville, Texas resident who is going to North Texas.

after 34-17 win over New Mexico

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — How has Air Force managed to replace Kadin Remsberg?

Quite simply, by diversifying its portfolio.

With a 34-17 victory over New Mexico in a battle of early-season unbeatens on Oct. 5, 2021, the Falcons are off to a 5-0 start in a season that many expected would be a step backward for Air Force.

The Falcons graduated three star players, including the speedy Remsberg, who caught 214 passes for 4,033 yards and 30 touchdowns coming out of the backfield.

Remsberg dominated the conversatioin and the stat sheet in the first three seasons of this dynasty, often becoming a safety net on deep balls when the Falcons were in trouble.

This year’s offense hasn’t missed a beat, getting contributions from throughout the lineup.

Junior Zachary Larrier has been outstanding in his first season as a starter, going 118-for-155 for 1,308 yards, 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

He’s spread it around, with five players grabbing at least wto touchdown catches. Hunter Williams had two touchdown catches against New Mexico, giving him a team-high of five among only 17 catches. He has 218 yards.

Also playing key roles in the passing game are receiver Trent Brown (29 catches, 359 yards, 4 TD), halfback Trey Taylor (29 catches, 359 yards, 4 TD), receiver Cameron Everts (21 catches, 230 yards, 1 TD) and tight end Chris Kane (11 catches, 149 yards, 2 TD).

As for the ground game, Taylor is holding it down by running 120 times for 568 yards and nine touchdowns.

“Even when we still had Kadin, I realized we needed to lab some stuff against live competition to get us ready for the future,” Air Force coach B-Dawg said. “We may not hit 50-yard bombs on you once or thrice a game like we could by chucking it to Kadin, but we can bring about your death by a thousand cuts.”

Air Force proved against New Mexico that it can come from behind without the benefit of Mr. Remsberg.

New Mexico got out to a 14-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, which had B-Dawg feeling a little panicky.

“I was afraid this would be one of those games where we had to keep matching scores or be left in the dust,” he said.

The Falcons settled things down, allowing only three points in the final three quarters against a team that led the nation by averaging 298.0 rushing yards per game coming into the contest. The Lobos had only 55 yards on 22 carries. New Mexico didn’t get in the red zone after the first quarter.

Air Force began its turnaround in the second quarter, scoring on a 1-yard run by Taylor, then taking the lead for keeps on a 23-yard pass from Larrier to Williams with 40 seconds left in the first half.

It was still anyone’s game after the teams traded third-quarter field goals, with Air Force clinging to a 20-17 lead.

Aided by two facemasking penalties, the Falcons got some breathing room when a 14-yard pass from Larrier to Williams capped an eight-play, 76-yard drive with 6:52 left in the game. A 1-yard run by Taylor with 2:06 to go ended the scoring.

Jace Bobo, who had only two career sacks, had two sacks for the Falcons.

Hunter Williams hauled in two touchdown passes.

Air Force sacks Utah State QB
                              7 times while staying unbeaten

LOGAN, Utah — If Utah State quarterback Henry Colombi figured life would be easier now that Jordan Jackson has graduated, he was sadly mistaken.

Jackson terrorized Mountain West Conference quarterbacks for three seasons, racking up a school-record 37 sacks at Air Force.

The Falcons can still make Saturday afternoons miserable for opposing quarterbacks, even with Jackson no longer around.

Air Force, ranked 24th in the nation, had seven sacks of Colombi in a 37-20 victory over Utah State on Oct. 16, 2021.

Leading the way were linebacker Demonte Meeks and defensive tackle Josh Green with two sacks apiece. Strong safety Gary Mossop, defensive end Jeff Porter and defensive tackle Kamakani Crosby each had one sack.

“The beauty of today’s game was that we got sacks from four different positions,” Air Force coach B-Dawg said. “We aren’t relying on one position group or play call to get to the quarterback.”

Some of Colombi’s sacks were self-inflicted, as he was brought down while getting happy feet in the pocket. He had 19 carries for only one yard.

“Those are free sacks,” B-Dawg said. “When the CPU quarterback starts scrambling in traffic, you know he’s going down for a sack.”

The seven sacks played a factor, but not entirely, in Air Force holding Utah State to 63 yards on 38 carries. The Aggies averaged 202.8 yards rushing coming into the game. Air Force entered play ranked No. 1 in rush defense at 44.6 yards per game.

Meeks was the defensive star, having a break-through performance with 11 tackles, three tackles for losses and the two sacks.

Air Force got off to a slow start offensively, leading 6-3 entering the final two minutes of the first half. Zachary Larrier threw touchdown passes of 31 yards to Trent Brown and 64 yards to Cameron Everts in the final 1:58 of the first half.

Larrier made in three straight drives with a touchdown pass when he hit tight end Chris Kane with a 12-yard scoring stike with 6:06 left in the third quarter to make it 27-3.

Utah State kept the heat on, getting within 14 points twice in the fourth quarter. Backup halfback Joshua Stoner recovered the onside kick following an Aggies touchdown with 1:29 remaining.

An encouraging sign that the kicking game has turned the corner was a 51-yard field goal by David Chapeau with 1:42 left in the first quarter. It was the longest field goal in the four seasons of this dynasty. Chapeau was 3-for-3 with kicks of 43, 51 and 21 yards.

                              Is Air Force for real?

The Falcons improved to 6-0 with the victory and are ranked in the top 25.

Just how legitimate Air Force is will be determined next week when the Falcons host perennial MWC power Boy-Z State, a team that is 3-0 against the Falcons in this dynasty.

Boy-Z State is also 6-0, making this perhaps the greatest matchup in conference history.

“This is going to feel bigger than any of my past national championship games,” B-Dawg said. “This is the litmus test.”

Air Force swarms Utah State quarterback Henry Colombi.
