Sounds like the move to pull Larrier will either get him to step his game up OR the poor kid is gonna be looking over his virtual shoulder on the field, at practice, in class and during field training. God bless 'em, he comes from a great family and everyone wants to see Zach do well.
I have a hard time pulling a guy from a game or benching him for a season if he has a higher rating. In my mind, the video game doesn't know if a kid has been struggling all year or not. Each game is a fresh opportunity to take a superior OVR onto the field and do better than the guy behind you. But then I have backup quarterbacks who come in for brief periods and consistently outperform the starter. I don't know if it's just the game momentum beating down the starter after a bad play or two or if the game doesn't always reward pure talent. Larrier will get the start against Utah State (and I might post that report this afternoon if the Word file my reports are on stops acting up).

      2022 SEASON, GAME 7

Air Force defensive tackle Hayden Isenhart gets one of his three sacks against Utah State.

      Redemption for Larrier
Benched last week, Air Force QB
responds well in win over Utah St.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — There are two ways for a quarterback to respond to a benching.

      1. You could pout like a punk and make a bee-line straight for the transfer portal like half the quarterbacks in major college football these days.

      2. You could be a man about it, work hard in practice and show up ready to perform on game day.

Air Force quarterback Zachary Larrier chose the latter approach, which is what one would expect from a player coached by B-Dawg, who prides himself on instilling heart and character into his players.

Larrier was 22-for-30 for 210 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-13 victory over Utah State on Oct. 15, 2022.

Last week, Larrier was yanked after he lost a fumble and threw an interception in the first five minutes of the game against Nevada. Haaziq Daniels came in and led a come-from-behind victory.

“I wasn’t ready to make a quarterback change just yet,” B-Dawg said. “Zachary was obviously on a very short leash today. He responded the way you’d hope one of the leaders on your football team to respond.”

Larrier took Air Force down the field on the first possession of the game, throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to running back Trey Taylor on third-and-goal to cap a 12-play, 76-yard drive that consumed 4:06.

Utah State shoved the ball right down the Falcons’ throats to tie the game, then got a glorious opportunity when Taylor fumbled at the Air Force 38-yard line with 1:16 left in the first quarter. Defensive back Dave Weatherford made sure that fumble wouldn’t hurt the Falcons, stopping quarterback Andrew Peasley for a 3-yard loss on an option keeper on third-and-two. A 49-yard field goal try was wide left.

Fueled by that momentum, Air Force went down the field and scored on a 7-yard pass from Larrier to Trent Brown to take a 14-7 lead with 5:30 left in the second quarter.

      Tale of two kickers

What would you do on fourth-and-one from the opponent’s 42-yard line? Go for the first down? Punt?

You probably wouldn’t attempt a 59-yard field goal with a guy who just missed a 49-yarder.

And, yet, that’s what the CPU had Utah State do with 3:57 left in the second quarter. Sam Freeman, an 82 OVR junior, kicked the ball way right and a little short.

“It feels like cheating when the CPU manages teams that way,” B-Dawg said. “I go for it 100 times out of 100 in that situation. I think most user coaches would do the same thing. The CPU play-calling logic is horribly flawed in this game.”

Meanwhile, Air Force entrusted David Chapeau to kick a field goal from the midfield logo on fourth-and-five on the next series of the game. With only a 1 mph wind going right to left, Chapeau nailed a 57-yarder to make it 17-7 with 2:06 left in the first half.

Chapeau also had kicks of 42 and 25 yards in the fourth quarter.

“I never would’ve had one of my kickers attempt a kick that far in the past,” B-Dawg said. “Anything over 40 yards was sketchy, at best. David looks like he has 60-plus range if he gets a wind at his back.”

      Dominating defenders

Strong safety Nate Wilson and defensive tackle Hayden Isenhart had monster games for Air Force.

Wilson had 14 tackles and three tackles for losses. He had his 14th tackle midway through the third quarter, which had B-Dawg thinking Wilson had a shot at his all-time record of 17 tackles set by Michigan’s Carvin Johnson (ironically, against Air Force) in NCAA 2012.

      Isenhart had three sacks.

It’s not like Utah State ran a ton of plays to give the Air Force defense a chance to rack up tackles. The Aggies ran only 50 plays, as Air Force had a 21:46 to 14:14 advantage in time of possession.

“Nate Wilson was everywhere,” B-Dawg said. “He’s an unsung hero of our program.”

Trey Taylor had touchdowns on the ground and receiving.

        2022 SEASON, GAME 8

San Diego State quarterback Carson Baker lunges into the end zone.

        DIRTY LAUNDRY
        Negated touchdown before half
the difference in loss to Aztecs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — One of B-Dawg’s laments about NCAA ’14 is the lack of realism when it comes to penalties.

Let’s just file that one under the category of “be careful what you wish for.”

While Air Force was celebrating a 55-yard touchdown pass from Zachary Larrier to Trent Brown on the final play of the first half, nobody noticed the piece of laundry laying on the field.

The culprit was Air Force tight end Jon McMahan, who somehow got a clipping penalty on a play that didn’t involve a runback.

The touchdown that was wiped off the board came back to haunt Air Force in a 31-28 loss to San Diego State on Oct. 22, 2022.

“I don’t like to blame the officials for a loss, but how in the world do we get clipping on a play like that?” B-Dawg said. “I want penalties in the game; I just don’t want them to take points off the board for me in crucial situations. Realism has its limits.”

Instead of leading 21-17 at halftime, the Falcons went into the intermission down by a 17-14 score.

Air Force had a chance to make amends, getting the ball to start the second half, but the Falcons couldn’t do anything with the drive. San Diego State went up 24-14 on a 5-yard run by Zidane Thomas for the only points of the third quarter.

The Falcons chased the game from there, getting within three points twice, but unable to completely close the gap.

Air Force couldn’t limit the damage whenever San Diego State got into the red zone, as the Aztecs came away with a touchdown all four times.

Trey Taylor ran 17 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns, but that was a little deceiving. A good chunk of those yards came on two runs of more than 20 yards. The Aztecs held him in check much of the game, forcing the Falcons to chuck it 47 times. The main antagonist was 84 OVR fifth-year senior defensive end Cameron Thomas, who had two sacks and four tackles for losses.

Larrier completed only 22 of those passes, with another ending up in the hands of the wrong team. It didn’t help that Air Force dropped seven passes. San Diego State broke up 11 passes, while Air Force broke up only two.

Trey Taylor ran for three touchdowns.

100%. I go for it in that situation almost every time. Too far to try the FG and too close to punt. No risk it, no biscuit, baby!

Big rebound game for Larrier against Utah State. I'm told by an unnamed source on campus that he also had his best week of class in his Remote Sensing and Imagery Analysis class. They said Larrier was "all business" on campus that week.

Big shout-out to Nate Wilson. 14 tackles on 50 defensive snaps is a hell of a game. Should win POTW by the NCAA for a performance like that.

Then we get to the see-saw though. Great against Utah State and a crucial penalty and leaky defense against SDSU the very next week. It's like the boys aren't focused on just football and airplanes.

Just between me, you and this entire forum...I heard Isenhart and Wilson were getting comfortable with some females on campus to the wee hours on Thursday after classes finished. Not trying to snitch, but, seems the boys might have issues handling success on the field with discipline off it. I'd expect another "focused" week from the team and a bounce-back win coming up.

Good job, Larrier! I know what that's like. I had a QB named Green that I benched mid game seems like for 4 straight years, but he always bounced back. But when he sucked, it was a 4-5 INT in the first half kinda suck.

Re: B-Dawg's Air Force Falcons: Flying high A.F.

Cool to see Andrew Peasley win the startng job for the Aggies. He is actually a local kid I know from La Grande Oregon. He didn't see much action his first 2 years at USU (Jordon Love) but did play some last year (2020 IRL).

Tough loss to the Aztec's. I feel that's a game you got to win if you want to be considered the best of the MWC and make a run at getting ranked.

It's tough because Taylor really seems to be your best option, but sometimes it's tough handing off the ball 30 plus times a game, when your only gaining 3 yds a carry until you break that big one.

in yet another football loss to Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Army has the ability to beat Air Force on the virtual gridiron.

What the Black Knights lack is a clue. More specifically, their CPU decision-making mechanism seems oblivious to what’s working and what’s not.

Based on a small, but impressive, sample size, wouldn’t you feed the rock to running back J.P. Anderson more than four times?

Who knows what type of damage Anderson would have committed on the Air Force defense if Army’s coaching staff committed to him.

Anderson gained 97 yards and scored a touchdown on just four carries, averaging 24.3 yards a pop, but quarterback Ryan Pugh got the vast majority of the carries in a 24-14 loss to the Falcons on Oct. 29, 2022.

Pugh did all right, gaining 120 yards on 22 carries, with four sacks factoring into his total. But the only thing that could stop Anderson was the bone-headed playcalling of the Black Knights.

“I shudder to think what would’ve happened if Anderson got even 15 carries,” Air Force coach B-Dawg said. “We couldn’t stop him. Fortunately for us, Army seemed to forget he even existed.”

Even without Anderson getting the touches he deserved, Army ran for 278 yards on 38 carries against the top-ranked rush defense in the nation. The Black Knights had seven runs of 20-plus yards, four by Pugh and three by Anderson.

Air Force featured its star running back, reigning Heisman Trophy winner Trey Taylor, but feeding him the rock 25 times for 175 yards. Freshman Jared Mann did a nice job when Taylor needed a breather, gaining 47 yards and scoring one touchdown on five carries.

Mann’s 29-yard run with 4:15 left in the game gave Air Force some breathing room after Anderson’s 26-yard run with 5:18 to go cut the lead to 17-14.

Strong safety Nate Wilson continued to be a heat-seeking missile on defense, making 11 tackles and four for losses. In the last three games, Wilson has 35 tackles, with eight going for losses.

Air Force is now 5-0 against Army and 10-0 against its military brethren.

Hey! There are certain "perks" to being a college football star! As long as it's consensual.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who can serve up 4-5 picks a game. Yeah, I figured he forgot all about the interceptions and was able to just be free and ball out.

Tough loss to the Aztec's. I feel that's a game you got to win if you want to be considered the best of the MWC and make a run at getting ranked.

It's tough because Taylor really seems to be your best option, but sometimes it's tough handing off the ball 30 plus times a game, when your only gaining 3 yards a carry until you break that big one.
I've got some running plays that get me some big chunks of yardage, but they're dependent upon the defense being in certain sets. Specifically, the defense needs to be in man coverage against "strong stretch," covering two receivers on the opposite side while I run around the opposite edge, slowing up to allow the fullback to take out a safety along the way. On just normal power runs, it's a struggle.

It's kind of crazy how I've still unbeaten against them. There have been some close games in there. At times, I've been able to sell out against the run and shut them down, but Navy has become more balanced and Army just found ways to gash me in the last game.

The CPU logic drives me nuts most of the time, like punting on fourth-and-inches from my 40-yard line, but I can't say I was mad they didn't keep feeding the rock to Mr. Anderson. I had no answers.

                        CLASS OF 2023 RECRUITING UPDATE

5-star safety among 8 Air Force commits

If Air Force wins a national championship in the next few seasons, the Falcons might look back on this week as the moment that pushed them to the next level.

Air Force signed its first five-star prospect in coach B-Dawg’s five-year reign in the person of 80 OVR strong safety DeAndre McCollum of Arvada, Colo.

McCollum is a heavy hitter who was the second-ranked strong safety in the nation. He chose Air Force over Oklahoma State and Missouri.

If McCollum was the only commit, it would have been a great week for Air Force. But he was only the tip of the iceberg as the headliner in a group of seven players to sign on with the Falcons. It’s their largest one-week haul during B-Dawg’s tenure. Three of the players are 75 OVR or higher.

“This might be the week we look back at and say, ‘This is when we became a college football power,’” B-Dawg said. “I am stoked to see what a player like McCollum can do playing at our level.”

Also committing to Air Force are 78 OVR receiver Brian Brown, 75 OVR tight end Josh King, 70 OVR halfback Marion Benjamin, 69 OVR guard Jeff Gallagher, 67 OVR defensive tackle Larry Cruz and 66 OVR guard Matt Keyes.

Benjamin is a speed back who will back up Jared Mann, but could be a poor man’s version of Kadin Remsberg if utilized properly.

During Air Force’s bye week, 66 OVR receiver J.B. White committed to the Falcons. Air Force now has nine players committed with 17 players graduating.

With so many points freed up, B-Dawg jumped into the recruiting battle for five-star athlete Chad Rice of Welch, W. Va., who registers 17% on the commitment meter. Rice is ranked 14th among athletes with the possibility of playing quarterback or receiver.

                            NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — It was the greatest game that never happened.

Air Force coach B-Dawg was basking in that immense feeling of satisfaction of a hard-fought 30-27 overtime victory over Colorado State when something didn’t quite look right.

All he saw on his screen was a photo of a Colorado State touchdown from earlier in the game. That photo never left the screen. As B-Dawg frantically hit buttons, hoping the game would come back to life, he realized he’d become the victim of the dreaded game freeze.

“That’s 90 minutes of my life I’ll never get back,” B-Dawg said. “The fact that it was an absolutely epic game makes it even worse.”

Colorado State, a team that has given Air Force fits during B-Dawg’s tenure, got out to a 24-7 lead in the second quarter.

Air Force fought back to force overtime on a David Chapeau field goal with one second left in the fourth quarter on fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line.

The Falcons won the toss and elected to play defense. A 15-yard catch moved the ball to the Air Force 7-yard line on the second play. After a 2-yard loss, defensive end Quinton Sanders forced a fumble with a sack and linebacker David Whitfield made the recovery.

Now all Air Force had to do was play it safe, move a little closer and kick the winning field goal.

With Jared Mann pounding the rock, Air Force moved to the 5-yard line before Chapeau came on and kicked the winning field goal.

The first sign of trouble was that ESPN didn’t even mention the winning field goal, but immediately went to a studio update.

“I thought that was a horrible way to end such a great game,” B-Dawg said. “I didn’t realize how horrible it would be. I’m guessing the fact they jumped right to the studio messed up something. This will be a tough game to win when we do the restart. I have to sweat and bleed to beat these guys.”

in restart victory over Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Defensive tackles are often the forgotten position on B-Dawg’s football teams, seen but rarely heard.

He’s more likely to get sacks from his defensive ends, even his strong safeties in a 4-2-5 scheme.

But 81 OVR senior Hayden Isenhart defied the stereotypes of a B-Dawg interior lineman, racking up three sacks among seven total tackles in Air Force’s 42-33 victory over Colorado State on Nov. 12, 2022.

Even B-Dawg was surprised to learn after the game that Isenhart is his leading sack master with a total of nine. He has 24 tackles, 11 for losses.

“I don’t expect much out of my defensive tackles,” B-Dawg said. “I hope they can occasionally blow up a run on third-and-short, maybe get the odd sack or two during a season, but the defensive ends are the impact players on my lines. Hayden may have earned himself an All-America spot today.”

Air Force had seven total sacks of 74 OVR true freshman quarterback Joel Bean, who held up pretty well under the onslaught. Bean was 22-for-28 for 243 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

“This is a team that has destroyed us through the air ever since I’ve been here,” B-Dawg said. “I’m not looking forward to seeing what this guy does to us three years down the road.”

This game was a do-over from a game that froze immediately after Air Force came from behind to win in overtime. In that game, defensive end Quinton Sanders made a huge play in overtime, getting a sack that a forced a fumble to set up the winning field goal.

Sanders was determined to make an impact against the Rams again. When Colorado State got within two points on Alex McDowell’s school-record fourth touchdown catch of the game with 4:38 remaining, the Rams went for two points in an attempt to tie the score.

Sanders made the play of the game by stepping up and stuffing a 2-point run to keep the Falcons in the lead.

Air Force then put it away by moving 61 yards in 11 plays, going up by nine points on a 3-yard run by Mann on third-and-goal with 1:10 to go.

While reigning Heisman Trophy winner Trey Taylor had 126 yards on 24 carries, he didn’t score. Mann cleaned up around the goal line with four scoring runs of three yards or less, giving him nine touchdowns this season.

Air Force is still in the hunt for a berth in the Mountain West Conference championship game. The Falcons are tied for first place at 4-2 with New Mexico, their opponent in the final game of the regular season.

Jared Mann ran for four touchdowns.
