Georgia, led by HC Kirby Smart, will have their strong defense tested by Arkansas' high power offense. This is a matchup of strength on strength as Smart is one of the best defensive coaches and Alex Flight is one of the best offensive coaches in the sport. Arkansas will have to rely heavily on preseason All-American receiver Jonathan Franks, as well as Morgan Spurlock. They have to get open early and take the pressure off true freshman QB Brian Bradford. Georgia's defense doesn't have any weaknesses, but its also not overly dominant. Offensively, Georgia will likely try to test Arkansas with a young, but talented run game led by sophomore Anthony Wood.

Razorbacks struggle, drop opener to Bulldogs
        Written August 29, 2020

The season did not start well for Arkansas on either side of the ball and they would lose the game 51-24. While fans should’ve expected a long journey, I don’t think many expected to be dominated on both sides of the ball in what was an even matchup on paper. However, a few freshman struggles could have turned the tide of the game.

Quarterback Brian Bradford struggled with accuracy all game, hindering the offense as Coach Flight couldn’t fully open up an already limited playbook. With Bradford having less than a month of practice, he hasn’t fully grasped the full playbook and Coach Flight has said he doesn’t trust him yet to even hot route receivers, a key to his offense.

An early drop by Will Louis on 3rd down led to a three and out on the opening drive and Georgia wasted no time getting down the field for the first of three field goals. Later in the quarter, UGA RB Anthony Wood would break 3 tackles for a 71 yard TD drive. Tackling was an issue for Arkansas all day, as it was at Colorado for Coach Flight.

“It all came down to a few fundamentals. Catching the ball, accuracy, tackling, and deep coverage were all issues today and could’ve swung the game in the opposite direction,” Coach Flight said in his postgame press conference, adding later, “We have a lot to work on.”

Both teams put up over 500 yards of offense, but the Razorbacks struggled immensely on 3rd down going 3/12 on the day. A fumble by senior Charlie Goolsby was the only difference in the turnover battle as both teams had a pick six in the 2nd quarter.

A promising 2nd quarter had the Razorbacks within one score, but Georgia was able to attack freshman CB Tre Richardson on their next two drives. Jim Walker moss’d Richardson for a 62 yard TD, and a blown deep third on the next drive led to a 2 yard TD a few plays later.

Arkansas would respond with a long touchdown from star receiver Jonathan Frank, his school record 28th of his career. That would be the last time Arkansas would score on the day as missed FG and turnover on downs in the red zone late in the fourth quarter would make the game look uglier than it should have.

The expectation was for Georgia to dominate on the ground. While they ran for nearly 200 yards, the real star of Georgia’s offense was QB Danny Grigsby who threw for 439 yards and 4 TDs. He spread the ball around well as three receivers had over 100 yards, with freshman Andy Williams leading the way with 9 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown. Jim Walker was a big play threat all game, with 3 catches for 112 yards and 2 TDs.

Author's Note: I meant to get pictures after the game as I’m not sure if going into replay during the game still causes lag. However, I was in a hurry and didn’t think about it until after I had already exited. I will try to do better in the future.

Texas Tech is not a good matchup for the Razorbacks. They sport a strong running game led by Ken Mayfield (90 ovr) and their offensive line is one of the strongest parts of their team, all above 80 overall. Despite young quarterback play, they have a good passing attack because of a good receiving core led by Jonathan Perry (85 ovr, 94 speed). Defensively, they are led by a strong group of corners, 4 over 80 overall. All have over 90 speed and they could probably just sit in press man coverage to stop these Arkansas receivers and force tight window throws, something Arkansas QB Brian Bradford struggled with a week ago.

Ugly loss has fans questioning coaching hire
              Written September 5, 2020

While Razorback fans may not have been expecting to become immediate national title contenders, they were expecting to look improved after hiring Alex Flight who many looked at as the best coach in the country. Instead they find themselves 0-2 and coming off a game with zero touchdowns.

Texas Tech dominated from start to finish, running all the way down the field for a 76 yard drive resulting in a touchdown. That was a common theme today as the Red Raiders ran for 424 yards and 5 touchdowns, including 341 and 4 from Ken Mayfield.

Offensively, the Razorbacks were even worse. Quarterback Brian Bradford left late in the first quarter with a bruised thigh and wouldn’t return. Backup James Gonzalez struggled immensely, throwing 2 interceptions and only leading two drives that resulted in field goals. Kicker Mike Andrews did show off a strong leg, nailing a 54 yard field goal and went 2 of 3 on the day.

Former Arkansas corner, John Hicks showed off against his old team allowing only 1 catch for 5 yards on 7 targets. Hicks transferred to Texas Tech after a lack of playing time in 2016 and has since emerged as Tech’s number one corner. With star receiver Jonathan Frank locked down by Hicks most of the game, the Razorbacks didn’t have much firepower.

To add injury to insult, linebacker Martin Carter suffered a broken wrist and will be out for the season.

Running back Ken Mayfield had his way with Arkansas defenders, breaking 10 tackles today

While Alex Flight has never lost a rivalry game as a coach, that is in jeopardy this weekend after a rough start. He'll take on Texas, who is led by his former defensive coordinator at Colorado in John Butler who was offered the head coaching job over Flight. This will be Flights first time returning to face his old school, and he has a lot to prove. Texas has a strong roster top to bottom and offensively will be led by running back Alan Webster, stepping in for an injured Carlton Pitts. Defensively, watch out for speedster FS Tony Cooley (94 overall, 99 speed). Arkansas will have to be careful when attacking the middle of the field.

Razorbacks show improvement in another loss
                    Written on September 12, 2020

Outside of turnovers, one can argue that despite today’s loss the Arkansas Razorbacks were the better team. However, turnovers are always a crucial part of the game, and often the deciding factor. That would be no different today as the Razorbacks would fall 49-35.

After struggling to get any offense going in the first two games, scoring only 30 points in the two combined, Arkansas was able to outperform their season total by notching 35 points. Add into that the 639 total offensive yards and a 3rd down conversion rate over 50%, and the Razorbacks seemed to have solved their big issues. Now their next area of focus can be on limiting turnovers as they fumbled once and threw 3 interceptions, including a pick six on what could have been a game tying drive.

This was a dream game for those who love passing as both teams combined for 985 yards through the air. With so many passes thrown, several receivers showed out. Five receivers finished with over 100 yards. The main stars were Josh Holloway who had 5 catches for 110 yards and 2 TDs, and tight end Joel Freeman for Texas with 12 catches for 161 yards, including 100 after catch, and a touchdown.

The difference for Texas however, was the kicking game. Freshman kicker Tristan Newsome was 7-of-7 on the day with a long of 47. In a sport where kicking is often hit or miss, Newsome was all hit today, hopefully a sign of good things to come the next four years. Meanwhile, Razorbacks kicker Mike Andrews was 0-2 missing from 56 and 39.

The game sealing play was made when Shawn Henderson picked off a Brian Bradford pass on a drive that could have tied the game. Henderson had an open field in front of him and took it 57 yards to the house to set the score at 49-35. It capped a 37 point second half effort from the Longhorns.

One final note, receiver Brandon Perry suffered a dislocated elbow and will be 7 weeks.

A Jeremiah Richardson INT in the first quarter would eventually lead to a Will Louis TD.

Josh Holloway breaks a tackle for the first of two touchdowns on the day.

Shawn Richardson jumps an out route for a game clinching pick six.

                      National News
-Colorado has 3 of top 5 Heisman favorites based on Vegas odds after freshman HB Speedy Sasso has entered the fray. QB Joel Thomas still holds the top spot, followed by Sasso. Alabama QB Courtney Dixon and Texas A&M RB Corey Dowdell both moved up this week, while Colorado RB Jacob Johnson maintains his 5th place odds.

-The defensive National POTW has been given to Shawn Henderson for his performance against Arkansas. Henderson had 7 tackles, a forced fumble, and 2 interceptions including the game sealing pick six. This is the 3rd time an Arkansas opponent has won POTW honors with Georgia QB Danny Grigsby and Texas Tech HB Ken Mayfield winning in previous weeks.

-4* DT Brad Bailey has committed to Arkansas. When asked why he chose now, after 3 straight losses, Bailey said “I see a struggling team that I know will get better, and I want to be a part of that”.

-Arkansas coach Alex Flight has set his annual “visit day”, where he brings as many recruits as he can on campus at once to build chemistry. This year is week 8 versus UL Monroe. So far 14 players have been invited. The 4 players who have already signed LOI’s in Mike Lucas, Lawrence Britt, Pierre Gordon and Brady Bailey have all signed on to come. While coach Flight usually likes to schedule this as early as possible, he has delayed it one week this year so it can be against a lesser team and not a ranked South Carolina team in week 7.

This will also be their first game against a mobile QB in Jose Thompson (92 ovr, 91 speed) something that coach Flight defenses have struggled against in the past. The Sooners have a 3 headed attack at RB, but junior Perry Macklin (90 ovr, 91 speed, 90 btk) will get the bulk of the carries. Senior receiver Paul Bailey (96 speed) and junior TE Ismael Williams (85 ovr) are the types of receivers that have given the Razorbacks fits to start the year. The Sooners have a good front 7, but lack depth in the secondary. Sophomore corner Todd Hudson (78 ovr) and junior corner Derek Fellows (76 ovr) have emerged as impact players to start the year, but beyond that they have not been tested deep in their depth chart. Arkansas star receiver Jonathan Frank will try to expose this versus his old team. Frank left after his freshman year in 2016 due to a lack of playing time, and has emerged as one of the best receivers in Arkansas history.

                            Heartbreaking defeat at a cost
                            Written September 19, 2020

Despite losing an overtime thriller, that was not the biggest loss on Saturday for the Razorbacks. Linebacker Benjamin Hodges suffered a traumatic injury, a broken vertebrae, and had to be carted off the field. While it is still early, doctors have already said he won’t play football again and it is very questionable if he will ever walk again.

Hodges was in his redshirt senior year athletically, and was in his second year of graduate school after graduating in 3 years with a 3.8 gpa. He had 15 tackles and an interception on the season entering the game. The injury occurred after Julius Houston forced a fumble on a run by Sooners quarterback Jose Thompson in the second quarter. Hodges recovered the fumble, where he suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit by an offensive lineman.

The injury clearly motivated the Razorbacks who fought back from a 21-7 deficit to take a 35-27 lead into the fourth quarter. Arkansas and Oklahoma traded scores when Oklahoma scored with 1:33 left in the quarter as Thompson found running back Perry Macklin on a checkdown. Macklin proceeded to break 4 tackles to score from 26 yards out.

Needing to just run out the clock after recovering the onside kick, a long first down on the first play of the drive actually hurt the Razorbacks. The Sooners were then able to get 3 stops and use all their timeout to get the ball back at the 3-yard line with 44 seconds left. Junior corner Brad Leak broke up a long pass with 22 seconds left to force a 4th down. However, the Sooners would complete a deep corner route and would eventually get in range for a 55 yard field goal that sophomore kicker Tony Carter would make despite being iced.

Arkansas held Oklahoma to a 40-yard field goal in the first overtime, and then proceeded to get inside the 5 yard line. However, left guard Brian Jones wasn’t able to pull fast enough and the only block he made was on quarterback Brian Bradfords running lane. That forced a field goal, and after trading touchdowns in the second quarter, Oklahoma was again forced to settle for a field goal.

Facing a 3rd and 6 from the 21, the Razorbacks took a shot. Backup safety Chris Williams made a leaping play to intercept a pass that was just slightly too low. Williams immediately went down and the Sooners celebrated narrowly avoiding the upset.

The Razorbacks showed great improvement, but dropped to 0-4 on the season and many expect coach Flight is now coaching for his job.

A forced fumble on a punt return gave the Razorbacks second life on their first drive.

The last play of Benjamin Hodges career as he would suffer a devastating injury after recovering this fumble.

The game sealing interception by Chris Williams.

                                Game Notes
To be considered a legitimate SEC team, Arkansas must beat Texas A&M this week. After struggling immensely the first two weeks, they have shown many improvements the last two.Facing one of the worst run defenses in the country, Texas A&M boasts one of the best run games in the country, led by Ben Cross (91 ovr) and Corey Dowdell (86 ovr). Receiver Jamie Burley (95 ovr, 97 speed) is one of the best deep threats in the country and will keep the Razorbacks honest. A bright side for the Arkansas? Texas A&M lacks a TE, something the Razorbacks have struggled to stop this year. However, A&M has one of the best OL's in the country (6 over 80 overall, 2 over 90) and they should pave the way for the RB's. An Arkansas offense that has been much improved will have to attack a mediocre A&M defense that boasts only 2 stars in MLB Travis Silva (90 ovr) and S Kenneth Porter (93 ovr, 83 speed). Extremely weak at CB, the Aggies number one CB is 3* freshman Charles Reid (73 ovr, 87 speed) so expect Jonathan Frank to have a big day.
