Frank’s record breaking day propels Razorbacks to first win
    Written September 26, 2020

Going on the road to College Station to play a ranked Aggies team, nobody gave the 0-4 Razorbacks a chance. But a massive second half led by star receiver Jonathan Frank gave the Razorbacks their first win in blowout fashion. Frank would score his 4th touchdown of the half in the final minute to set the final score at 66-42.

A&M would strike first from a yard out, but Arkansas answered with 2 straight touchdowns to go up 14-7 in the first. Then it looked like A&M had woken up as they punched in three touchdowns in the ground to flip it to 28-14. After exchanging scores, Arkansas was driving late in the half.

A drop on second and long by freshman Derrick McDonald on what would have been a touchdown looked like it would stall the drive and the Razorbacks would be forced to settle for a long field goal attempt. But a big conversion would set McDonald up for redemption as he would get a big 23-yard touchdown with just seconds left to pull within 1 score.

It’s unknown what coach Flight said at halftime, but it clearly worked as the second half was all Razorbacks. Two straight touchdowns by Jonathan Frank would give them a lead before the Aggies scored once again from a yard out.

After Arkansas got their third rushing touchdown of the day from their third different player, an Anthony Mays interception completely changed the game. Arkansas would reel off 17 more points including 2 record breaking touchdowns by Frank and a second interception by Anthony Mays to seal the game.

Frank would break the school record for receptions in a game (previously 13) on the first touchdown of the fourth quarter, and the records for yards (303) and touchdowns (3) in a game on the second in what would be the greatest game by an Arkansas receiver in school history by far.

Arkansas moves to 1-4 on the season and looks like a new team. Quarterback Brian Bradford has 1439 yards and 15 touchdowns over the last 3 games and has cemented himself as the starter after a rough first two weeks. The defense is still struggling, especially against the run as they gave up 329 yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground today, but they forced 4 turnovers in key situations for enough to win the game.

Coach Flight may have cooled his seat for the time being, but things don’t get any easier. The Razorbacks travel to Missouri next week before returning home to play the current number 2 team in the country in South Carolina. The path to a bowl game looks bleak but if the Razorbacks keep playing like this they have a chance.

Freshman Derrick McDonald gets his first career touchdown before half.

Jonathan Frank spins past a defender for the first of four touchdowns.

A strip fumble on A&M TE Chad Turner was one of four turnovers forced on the day.

      National News
-Arkansas’ freshman QB Brian Bradford was named National POTW after a performance that included 556 passing yards, 68 rushing yards, and 7 total touchdowns. Defensively, sophomore OLB Nathan Williams wins the honor after an 8 tackle performance where he added 3 TFL, a sack, and an interception. This is the second week this season where both honors went to SEC players, after Texas CB Shawn Henderson and Kentucky HB David Snyder won it in week 3.

-Several recruits signed LOI’s this week, headlined by 4* WR4 Michael Wade from Minnesota. Wade has signed with Florida. The 6’2” WR ran a 4.42 at The Opening. Wade will look to bolster a passing attack that ranks 56th in the nation so far this season.

-Ryan Morgan, a 3* DT from California has committed to Washington. Casey Noble, a 4* OLB from Arkansas has committed to TCU. Both were being recruited by Arkansas, who have now ramped up recruiting on 3* OLB Garrett Noel (LA) and 3* DT Mike Howe (AR).

        Game Notes
Missouri may lack speed on offense, but make up for that with physicality. RB Sean Rollins (89 btk) is averaging 6.1 ypc behind a strong interior OL (92.3 avg). However, the tackles are the weak spot of this offense (72/71). Defensively, LE Sam Bates (90 ovr) teams up with 6 LBs to bolster this front 7. The star of the group is LOLB Maurice Lake (92 ovr) coming off a season with 96 tackles, 24 of which were for a loss. Sophomore corner Demetrius Christensen is the star of a relatively weak secondary (83 ovr, 91 speed, 95 man/zone). Christensen is coming off a game against Tennessee that included his first career interception. Missouri has had a balanced attack this season but has performed best when they are able to run better than they pass.

          Razorbacks survive second half comeback
          Written October 3, 2020

It was a tale of two halves on a rainy day in Columbia. Arkansas jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half and it looked like the game would be a blowout. But Missouri wouldn’t have it, scoring 28 of the next 35 points before Arkansas put together a last minute drive for a touchdown.

The Razorbacks came out run heavy and ended up scoring on their second drive, with the play balance being 9 runs to 3 passes on those two drives. At the end of the day the numbers would reflect a more normal balance for an Alex Flight team as the Razorbacks finished with 38 rushes to 42 passes. “With the weather we wanted to play it safe, but that clearly didn’t work,” Flight said after running for only 4.4 yards per carry, an average bolstered by the first half.

Missouri had no such problems running the ball, as RB Sean Rollins ran for 287 yards and 4 touchdowns on 30 carries. The run defense has been a big issue for the Razorbacks this year and doesn’t appear like it will go away. The difference in the game ultimately was a fumble by Rollins at midfield.

Just two minutes later, Charlie Goolsby caught the game-winning touchdown with just 20 seconds left. Missouri would get to midfield with 5 seconds left, attempting a hail mary that was ultimately broken up.

There were no real standouts for the Razorbacks on the day. The offensive game ball went to Brian Bradford for his 323 yard and two touchdown performance, although he did have an interception. Defensively, Matthew Wells had the best game with 9 tackles and a forced fumble, but no Razorbacks recorded a sack or interception as Missouri QB Kevin Ham had all day to wait for receivers to get open, yet he still struggled to leave his mark on the game.

The Razorbacks will have to be more explosive next week as they host #2 South Carolina. Turnovers and big play offense carried the Razorbacks a week ago to their first win against Texas A&M, and they will need that to resurface while hopefully better containing a deep run game.

A strip by Matthew Wells would set the Razorbacks up for a game-winning drive.

Brian Bradford stands tall in the pocket as he finds Charlie Goolsby for the winning touchdown.

Missouri's attempt at overtime comes up short as the hail mary is broken up with no time left.

              Game Notes
Arkansas returns home to host the number 10 team in the nation. South Carolina is led by a strong run game. The lead back is senior Isaiah Gray (90 ovr), but backup Ryan Schmidt (88 ovr) is averaging more yards per carry, so it will be interesting to see who the Gamecocks go with. South Carolina is thin at receiver, with only 5 on their active roster. Brandon Jamison will be the go to receiver with his good speed (81 ovr, 93 speed). The Gamecocks have a solid defense all around, with their only weakness being at strong safety where they start 3* freshman Jermaine Hall (66 ovr). South Carolina ranks second in the country with 10 interceptions and will try to force the freshman QB of the Razorbacks to make mistakes often.

Razorbacks win shootout behind strong second half
                Written October 10, 2020

Coaches always say games aren’t won in the first half. Well that was both true and false today as Arkansas would erase a 10 point halftime deficit to win a thrilling shootout. But one play in the second quarter would be the deciding factor and ultimately what won the game.

South Carolina would get the first score as tight end Kevin Dailey broke a couple of tackles to score from 31 yards out. Arkansas would respond after a strip sack got the ball back. Brian Bradford ran the option to perfection, taking a massive hit as he pitched the ball to receiver Joe Stewart for a 16 yard touchdown. The very next play, however, Arkansas sold out to stop what they thought was an inevitable run. Instead it was a play action pass and South Carolina got a 1 play, 75-yard touchdown.

Stringing together another two consecutive touchdowns, South Carolina lined up for a kick to go up 21. Nobody thought much of it at the time, but freshman receiver and returner Derrick McDonald came screaming around the edge and got the block to keep it a 20 point deficit.

The rest of the game was a shootout with just a handful of stops. Perhaps the biggest of the game came with 1:38 left, when Isaiah Gray was stopped a yard short from the marker and South Carolina was forced to settle for a field goal to go up 6. That’s where the blocked kick comes in. Brian Bradford led a brilliant drive down the field. On 4th and goal from the one inch line, Arkansas went with the hard count. They caught South Carolina offsides and immediately snapped it, but it wouldn’t matter as running back Calvin Parker punched it in. Kicker Mike Andrews would have to deal with an icing attempt, but drilled the PAT.

A spectacular game from South Carolina QB Korey Calhoun would prove to be all for nothing. The Gamecocks QB put up 310 yards through the air and as many touchdowns (5) as interceptions. Add in 126 yards on the ground and it’s no wonder South Carolina was able to put up over 700 yards of offense.

But Calhoun wasn’t the only quarterback to show up. Brian Bradford had 477 yards of total offense and 4 touchdowns. The star for the Razorbacks though was Joe Stewart who had 3 rushes for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns, along with 8 catches for 65 yards and a touchdown reception.

Many considered Arkansas’ season over after an 0-4 start, but now coming off 3 straight wins they could very easily make a bowl game. Assuming they win their 2 remaining non conference games vs. UL Monroe and Texas State, they just need to beat one of Ole Miss, Mississippi State, or LSU to be bowl eligible. Considering the 3 teams are a combined 7-9, things look very promising.

The blocked kick that would ultimately decided the game.

Star receiver Jonathan Frank lays out to put Arkansas in FG range with just seconds left in the half.

Brian Bradford drops in a perfect pass to Joe Stewart for a massive first down.

Some may look at this as a rest game for an Arkansas team that has battled hard all season. But instead they could be tested as UL Monroe matches up really well. They have a mobile QB in Keith Davis (84 ovr, 86 speed), a two headed backfield with Chad Flynn (82 ovr, 82 truck) and Graham Broussard (82 ovr, 93 speed). At WR, Will Huggins is an absolute burner (97 speed), and tight end Keith Small has good speed for his position (82 speed). A strong interior OL makes up for the weak tackles. Defensively, the only standout for the Warhawks is Lionel Brooks, a safety with decent range (87 speed) as demonstrated by his 4 INTs on the season.

After 4* S Bradley Williamson (MS), 3* OLB Garrett Noel (LA) and 2* WR Ray Mack (TX) signed with Arkansas last week, you can expect a few more commitments this week. That’s because it’s visit week! What is visit week you might ask? It’s a coach Flight tradition where he brings as many recruits as he can at once in hopes of building chemistry and gaining commitments. This year he has nine recruits visiting, all but one of the current recruits with crystal balls for Arkansas. The nine visiting are below:
                    -4* G Nigel Clark (TN)
                    -4* OLB Demarcus Davis (OK)

Arkansas controls game to reach .500
                      Written October 17, 2020

While their opponent may not have been top tier, this must have been a refreshing game for the Razorbacks as they controlled the game after the first quarter. There was a slight change of scheme, as Arkansas ran 49 times compared to 23 passes. While it may be expected that a lot of that came with the game in control, there was a slight run bias in the first half as well.

The star of the day was running back Mike Everson who ran for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns. Everson was fed all day, perhaps to show off for the offensive lineman and running back recruits visiting this week.

That doesn’t mean Brian Bradford didn’t have any highlights today. The freshman had a fantastic day, going 17/23 for 282 yards and 2 touchdowns, while adding 2 more on the ground.

Defensively, issues remained the same. While holding UL Monroe under 100 yards passing and Matthew Wells having a sack and an amazing interception, the Razorbacks allowed 323 yards on the ground. This is the fifth time the Razorbacks have allowed over 250 yards rushing, and fourth time they’ve allowed over 300 yards. Running back Chad Flynn ran over defenders all day, running for 153 yards after contact alone.

The Razorbacks may want to stick with their run game next week as they play an Ole Miss defense that has been almost as bad as they have, allowing 272.8 yards per game on the ground.

As far as how visit day went, the Razorbacks landed 8 commitments. Every recruit that visited except for Nigel Clark signed after the game, which raises questions about if Clark will sign at all. Clark has said he wants to visit a couple more schools and wait on his decision. Currently he has visits scheduled for Memphis in week 12, Washington in week 13, and Wisconsin in week 14.

Tackling was again an issue for the Razorbacks and Chad Flynn had his way with the defense.

Returner Brad Fry breaks 3 tackles on his way to a 96 yard kick return touchdown.

Matthew Wells just gets his hands under the ball in time for an interception.

Authors note: I haven't paid much attention but the image quality for this week looks much worse than I remember it for previous weeks. I don't know what caused this and I apologize, but I'll try to catch it next time.

Bet the over on this game. Both defenses rank among the worst in the country, especially against the run. Ole Miss boasts a scrambling sophomore QB in Brant Lawson (81 ovr, 87 speed) and two power backs in Preston Rivero (91 ovr, 96 btk) and Reggie McKinney (91 ovr, 93 btk) who are expected to run through these poor tackling Razorbacks all game. Tight end Steven Bowser is their leading receiver with 30 catches for 562 yards, something that doesn't bode well for a team that has been burnt by tight ends all year. On defense, the Rebels have a good pass rush and secondary, but lack run stuffers. If Arkansas wants a better chance they will rely on their running game like they did a week ago.

As many expected, as evidenced by the 90.5 point O/U set by Vegas, Saturday’s game between Ole Miss and Arkansas was a battle of the offenses. Both teams put up over 550 yards and 50 points, but ultimately it was three turnovers and two failed two point conversions by Arkansas that would give Ole Miss a 53-51 win.

Losing the turnover battle always hurts, and today was no different. It could have been different if not for one dropped interception early. Thomas Watkins was in position for an interception about halfway through the first quarter, but dropped it. A few plays later, Rebels quarterback Brant Lawson found Tony Manning for the first touchdown of the game.

Another crucial turnover opportunity came when Mike Everson had the ball poked out as Arkansas tried to squeeze in one more play in the quarter as they were driving. After trading touchdowns to make the score 24-14, Arkansas was stopped at the Rebels 40 on third down. Instead of punting, coach Flight opted for the long field goal putting faith in junior kicker Mike Andrews who came into the game 2/8 from beyond 30 yards. This time though, Andrews showed off his leg and put it right down the middle to pull within one score.

Arkansas would have yet another great second half, with the highlight being freshman Derrick McDonald who had two amazing catches. Down 5 with under 2 minutes left, Arkansas would hold Ole Miss to a field goal and get the ball back with the chance to tie the game. Freshman QB Brian Bradford would scramble for a 5 yard touchdown with 28 seconds left. It all came down to the two point play.

Coach Flight went with a toss play out of his goal line wishbone formation. Everson took the pitch, but couldn't get the edge as his lead blocker, Chris Mack was pushed back by the defender and took Everson out.

Going 1-3 on two point conversions is what was the difference in the game, as had Arkansas kicked on the two failed attempts, the game would have gone to overtime. When asked about the decision to go for it late in the third quarter, coach Flight said, “I thought the game would come down to one stop. Of course we ended up getting two partial stops instead and my decision cost us.” Flight was of course referring to the two fourth quarter field goals that Ole Miss had to settle for.

After the tough loss, Arkansas has consecutive bye weeks before traveling to Mississippi State. The Bulldogs sport one of the best passing defenses in the country statistically, so Arkansas may have to rely on their run game. It feels like that has been said for weeks but it should be true once again.

A dropped interception and blown coverage would lead to a wide open touchdown for Tony Manning.

Freshman Derrick McDonald seemed to cure his drop problem, making two amazing catches in the second half.

Chris Mack gets pushed back into ball carrier Mike Everson on the game-deciding play.
