      Game Notes
Arkansas returns to game action after 2 weeks off with what is an unspectacular match-up on paper. Mississippi State has a decent run game bolstered by two good guards and junior running back Sean Huston (87 speed, 90 elusiveness) but it's not anything like the Razorbacks have faced earlier in the season. Coming off a game in which they held their opposing running back to under 20 rushing yards, they should feel better about this game especially because they also don't have to deal with a mobile quarterback. The best part about this Bulldogs team is their pass defense, highlighted by 4 redshirt senior pass rushing defensive linemen, and a lockdown junior corner in Antwan McLaughlin (86 ovr, 95 speed, 6'2") who will likely play on Sundays. He will be seeking his first interception of the season on Saturday, but has 9 pass breakups which ranks third in the SEC.

Arkansas squeaks out win behind dominant 4th quarter
        Written November 14, 2020

It was a rainy day in Starkville, but that didn’t stop both teams from airing it out. A combined 1178 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air is not what the experts expected with the forecast and both teams miserable run defenses. Granted run defense wasn’t spectacular either as neither defense could get a stop until it mattered most.

While the game was entertaining throughout, the real fun started with under 3 minutes to go. With the score being 58-48 Bulldogs following a Sean Huston touchdown run with 2:46 left, the Razorbacks needed a quick score and a stop using all three of their timeouts to have a chance. And then Brad Fry fumbled on the kickoff return and the game was over.

Until it wasn’t. Ryan Smith, who had been tremendous on the day, threw a pass that went through his receivers hands and found itself in the lap of freshman corner Tre Richardson at the 1-yard line. Brian Bradford would lead a quick 99 yard drive, conserving all three timeouts and leaving his defense with 1:27 to get the ball back. In the process of the drive, Bradford set the school record for passing yards in a game and season, and tied the school record for touchdowns in a season.

After allowing a first down on the first play of the drive following the failed onside kick attempt, the Razorbacks defense strung together three straight stops and forced a 47 yard field goal attempt. Mississippi State kicker Courtney McCollum came up just short, giving the Razorbacks 40 seconds and no timeouts to get at least into field goal range, or better yet go all 70 yards for a touchdown.

Brandon Perry, who had been out since week 3, came up huge in his return, pulling in a 42 yard reception on the first play putting the Razorbacks in field goal range. Two plays later, Mason Spurlock would go up over the defender for a 21 yard reception. The next play, Charlie Goolsby, only on the field because Jonathan Frank had been out since the start of the third quarter with a high ankle sprain, caught a short in route, and broke a tackle to get in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

Bradford had one of his best games of the season, going 41/61 for 670 yards and 7 touchdowns to just one interception, adding 50 yards on the ground. In his slinging the ball around the field, four receivers finished with over 90 yards including Perry who had a great return to the field following his dislocated elbow early in the season.

The win gives Arkansas five on the season, meaning they just need to beat lowly Texas State next week to become bowl eligible. That seemed impossible after the first four games, but the Razorbacks have rallied and gone 5-1 since starting 0-4.

Freshman CB Tre Richardson comes up with his first career interception in the clutch.

Brandon Perry gets the Razorbacks into scoring position in his return to the field.

Charlie Goolsby breaks a tackle to score the game winning touchdown in the final seconds.

Authors Note: I will be changing human pass coverage from 40 to 45 and CPU pass coverage from 30 to 25 for the remainder of the season. If I find it too easy I will change it back for the bowl game. But as of now human pass coverage feels it can't cover anything, and press man coverage by the CPU is unbeatable.

          National News
-Arkansas freshman QB Brian Bradford won National POTW honors after his 720 total yard, 7 touchdown performance in his team's win over Mississippi State. This is the second time Bradford has received this honor after winning in week 5. It is also the fourth time Bradford has been named SEC player of the week.

-ESPN released their bowl projections this week. While Houston/Colorado is the obvious National Championship at this point as both teams are 1 and 2, there are multiple interesting matchups. A Clemson/Rutgers Orange Bowl, Texas/Navy Sugar Bowl, Georgia Tech/Arizona State Fiesta Bowl, and Wisconsin/Alabama Rose Bowl comprise the BCS bowls. Other marquee projections include Oklahoma/Ohio State meeting in the Capital One Bowl and a Michigan/USC New Mexico Bowl. Should Arkansas become bowl eligible, they are on a collision path with current #22 ECU in the Liberty Bowl.

-In recruiting news, 4 of the top 5 recruits remain unsigned. Only OT Kamaru Nguyen has committed, choosing to go to Georgia Tech over Army and Wisconsin. Three other top 10 players have also committed. Athletes Michael Davis and Alex Anderson will be attending Texas A&M and Tennessee respectively, while top ranked running back Kyle Martinez has opted to stay close to home at California.

            Game Notes
Lowly Texas State travels to Fayetteville to take on the Razorbacks this weekend. The Bobcats are highlighted by one of the better offensive lines in the country, featuring five starters in contention for all-conference honors (80 ovr). Behind that line will stand senior QB Kenny Buckley, a true pocket passer who will limit turnovers. Who will play at running back is a mystery as starter Dwayne Dukes, who has run for nearly 1000 yards on the season, is listed as questionable with an abdominal tear. His backup Jeff Collins (65 ovr) has played well on the season also, although he is less talented than Dukes. Buckley's main weapons will be senior burner Russ Butler (93 speed) and junior tight end Gabe Taylor (83 speed) who should both present mismatches. On defense, the Bobcats have been extremely weak, although senior linebacker Phillip Pope has been exceptional with 70 tackles and 3.5 sacks on the season.

              Arkansas wins record-setting shootout
              Written November 21, 2020

While it was known Arkansas had a great offense and bad defense, many did not fully realize how bad this defense was. In a game all about offense, it was two plays on defense and special teams that came within a minute of each other that would really be the momentum changers.

Surprisingly, Arkansas would punt on their first possession. That’s when the fun started. Kenny Buckley found Jeff Collins who broke several tackles on his way to a 61 yard touchdown. Just over a minute later, Brian Bradford would run it in for his first of seven total touchdowns on the day, 4 through the air and 3 on the ground. Following a Bobcats field goal and a Joe Stewart touchdown reception, Collins would score his second touchdown of the quarter with a 7 yard run.

The second quarter was much of the same, with two touchdowns each coming from Gabe Taylor and Jonathan Frank sandwiched in between two field goals. The second half started off slow as nobody scored until halfway through. That’s when Bradford scampered in for a five yard touchdown. Collins would score again giving the Bobcats a 41-38 lead.

That’s when the momentum was shifted in a big way. Derrick McDonald took the kickoff from two yards deep in the end zone and ran it out. Going untouched after two cuts, he would go the full length of the field to give Arkansas the lead. A few plays later, Buckley would fumble on an option keeper and Ron Weaver would pick it up and return it to the 1-yard line so Calvin Parker could punch it in on the next play.

Arkansas would get one more stop at the beginning of the fourth quarter. After that though the teams would trade scores in a 4th quarter that featured 43 total points. By the time it was all said and done, there were 136 total combined points which tied the 2007 matchup between Navy and North Texas for the most points in a regulation FBS game.

While Texas State outgained Arkansas by nearly 100 yards from scrimmage, it was efficiency that won it for the Razorbacks. Converting 2 more third downs and scoring touchdowns on all eight red zone trips, along with gaining 314 yards on kickoff returns was what would ultimately be the difference.

The win makes Arkansas bowl eligible, something very important as they will take on an LSU team that currently ranks 16th in what should be their most difficult game on paper in over a month and a half.

Derrick McDonald skies for an amazing catch in the second quarter.

Derrick McDonald makes another big play, this time a 102 yard kickoff return.

Kenny Buckley fumbles and Ron Weaver returns it to the one-yard line in a rare defensive stop.

I don't think it matters who LSU has on offense as Arkansas couldn't stop a nose bleed, but let's look at it real quick. At QB they have senior Jonathan Atkinson (94 ovr, 99 THA) who has surprisingly struggled with accuracy completion only 53.1% of passes on the year. A two headed rushing attack of Anthony Jackson and Andrew Martin (both 86 ovr) leaves Arkansas unsure of who will get the bulk of the carries. LSU has decent receivers but nothing to write home about. The real strength of this team is pass defense, ranking first in the country. Four corners with great speed and good coverage (93+ spd, 83+ all coverage) is headlined by senior Corey Henley (91 ovr, 99 prc, 99 mcv). The defense as a whole has 15 interceptions which is tied for seventh in the country. They also rank top 10 in sacks, with 33 on the year. If LSU can shut down the top notch Razorbacks passing attack, this one could get ugly.

Arkansas upsets rival in sloppy snow game
                    Written November 28, 2020

In a surprise snow game, it looked like Arkansas would get blown out early. Two early interceptions changed the game plan for coach Flight and it paid off in the end as the Razorbacks pulled the upset in a surprisingly uncharacteristic game.

Things were looking normal on the first drive for the Razorbacks as the team drove in the red zone with the passing game clicking on all cylinders. That changed when a rollout pass was underthrown by Brian Bradford and intercepted by Brock Johnson. LSU would score almost instantly when Jeremy Shelton would break several tackles and take it 83 yards to the house. An LSU pick-6 would follow shortly after as Matt Little would jump an out route and go 31 yards.

Arkansas was clearly rattled and on the first play of the next drive they came out in the flexbone and ran a triple option. Mike Everson would take the handoff and go 75 yards untouched. From there on out coach Flight was clearly reliant on the run game.

In the third quarter a fumble on a QB keeper by LSU would set up a touchdown drive that ended on a back shoulder fade to Mason Spurlock. A few drives later, Bradford would fumble on a strip sack and LSU would drive all the way to the one yard line. But safety Ron Weaver wasn’t going to allow an easy touchdown, and he stood up Andrew Martin at the goal line to force LSU to take a 17 yard field goal.

The fourth quarter was mostly uneventful. Arkansas kicker Mike Andrews, who has struggled all year, would hit a 19 yard field goal off the right upright as it fell no good. Bradford would get the ball back after an LSU three and out and lead a touchdown drive where he would punch it in from three yards out. After a failed LSU fourth down attempt in the red zone, Arkansas just needed one first down to seal the game. Everson would take another handoff and go 68 yards before running out of gas and being caught from behind. Bradford would take a knee and the score would settle at 34-17.

For a team known for its passing attack and terrible defense, this game may be a signal of things to change. Arkansas held LSU to 351 yards and forced 3 turnovers. Add in that LSU only converted 1 of 11 third downs and only managed one field goal in three red zone trips, and it’s easy to see how Arkansas won this game with defense.

The win pushes Arkansas to 7-5, and they will finish third in the SEC West. While coach Flight probably wanted a better start, this does mirror his first season at Colorado as he went 7-5 in the regular season and finished third in the PAC-12 North. Just two seasons later, he was bringing a national title home to Boulder. What he will do in Fayetteville remains to be seen, but fans shouldn’t be disappointed yet.

Mike Everson had the best game of his season so far and eclipsed the 1000 yard mark because of runs like this.

Mason Spurlock uses his big frame to his advantage on this back shoulder fade.

Mike Andrews continued his season long struggle today as he missed this chip shot field goal.

                      Conference Championship Games
SEC: #19 South Carolina vs #7 Texas
Both teams are separated by one tenth of a point in terms of scoring offense, and both have average defenses. Texas has been great at forcing turnovers this year (+10 TO differential) but South Carolina loves to run the ball. Kirk’s pick? South Carolina

                      MAC: Akron vs Eastern Michigan
Neither team has a good offense, but both defenses have been elite in the MAC this year. Akron ranks 8th in total defense and Eastern Michigan ranks 2nd in the country. Look for a low scoring struggle as both of these usual bottom dwellers compete for what would be each school's second conference title. Kirk’s pick? Eastern Michigan

                      PAC-12: #10 Arizona State vs #4 Colorado
The only offense that has been better than Colorado’s this year is led by their former coach. Ranking second in the nation in total offense and scoring offense, it’s hard to see why anyone would pick Arizona State. However, ASU has played a much more difficult schedule and put up similar numbers. That means the Buffs are on upset alert. Kirk’s pick? Arizona State

ACC: #6 North Carolina vs #3 Clemson
Nobody is better at holding onto the ball and simultaneously holding on to the ball than Clemson, who has a +16 turnover differential this year. While both teams rank in the top 7 for scoring offense, this will likely be the difference. Kirk’s pick? Clemson

Big Ten: #12 Rutgers vs #5 Wisconsin
Rutgers goes for its first ever Big Ten title in what is an even matchup on paper. Rutgers struggles to run the ball, but Wisconsin can’t stop the run. Wisconsin won’t pass, but Rutgers doesn’t know how to stop it. Both teams' weaknesses play against each other and something has to give. Kirk’s pick? Rutgers

Big 12: Baylor vs #1 Houston
The defending national champion Cougars enter this one as heavy favorites. Baylor has struggled on offense all year, but they have one thing going for them. The country’s number 6 pass defense to match up with Houston’s second ranked pass offense. We’ll see if the immovable object can stop the unstoppable force. Kirk’s pick? Houston

                      Heisman Watch

In what has been a close year throughout, the five expected finalists are (alphabetical order):

-Brian Bradford, FR QB, Arkansas. Bradford has shined in his first year, thanks to coach Flights high flying offense. Bradford has over 5000 total yards and 53 total touchdowns. The only reason he isn’t the betting favorite is because of his team's 7-5 record and Bradfords 23 turnovers (15 INT, 8 fumbles). While it would be shocking to see him win this year, he should be the odds on favorite next year as the only underclassman in the top 5.

-George Coley, RS SR HB, Virginia Tech. Coley has been a top favorite all year but has lost some steam late. His numbers are still fantastic. 1890 yards and 22 touchdowns on 6.8 yards per attempt is not easy to replicate. Where Coley struggles is pass catching, and nowadays versatility is big in winning the trophy.

-Quentin Herron, RS SR QB, Georgia Tech. A three year star, this could be Herron’s year. Leading the current number 2 team in the country, Herron has 1931 yards passing and 28 touchdowns on a 71% completion percentage. But it’s his rushing that’s the difference. Rushing for over 900 yards for the third straight year, he’s added 16 touchdowns on the ground which is the most in his career.

-Ryan Rogers, RS SR HB, Army. Having to take a medical redshirt his freshman year after a torn achilles in camp, many never expected Rogers to reach this level after not playing in 2017 and barely seeing the field in 2018. But after a strong junior year, Rogers has been arguably the nation’s top running back with 1940 yards and 22 touchdowns on 7.1 yards per attempt. Like Coley, however, he is not a receiver and that will likely cost him in the voting.

-Joel Thomas, SR QB, Colorado. The two-time defending Heisman winner will look to make history this year. This has arguably been his best year from an efficiency standpoint. A 210.6 passer rating on 78% completion percentage and 10.7 yards per attempt is absurd. However, only throwing the ball 272 times has hurt him in raw numbers but he’s still managed over 3600 total yards and 38 touchdowns through the air and 8 more on the ground. Being the only finalist to play before voting ends, he is currently the popular favorite despite ranking second in Vegas odds.

                      National Championship Outlook
5 of the top 6 teams play over conference championship weekend. Houston is in if they win and being nearly 30 point favorites, most people have already written them in. But current number 2 Georgia Tech is the only team off this weekend as they have suffered both their losses to number 3 Clemson and number 6 North Carolina who play each other in the ACC Championship. A Clemson win could easily propel them over Georgia Tech, but North Carolina would need help. Colorado and Wisconsin both play ranked opponents and only have one loss compared to Georgia Tech’s two. This weekend's results could not be more important, but the path for each team is completely unclear besides Houston who is in with a win.

                        Conference Championship Game Results

American Champion: Arkansas State 9-3 (8-0 AAC)

                        C-USA Champion: Western Kentucky 8-4 (7-1 CUSA)

MWC Champion: Fresno State 9-3 (8-1 MWC)

Sun Belt Champion: Southern Miss 10-2 (5-1 SBC)

SEC: Texas 31, South Carolina 24
South Carolina turned the ball over only one time but it was a key one. Driving in the red zone in the 4th quarter with the game tied, an interception gave Texas the ball back and set up a 93 yard scoring drive capped by Wesley Franklin’s 4th total touchdown of the day.

MAC: Akron 35, Eastern Michigan 28 OT
Despite running for nearly 300 yards and controlling the clock, Eastern Michigan wasn’t able to pull this one out in regulation. Instead it went to overtime, where Justin Causey had his pass dropped by fullback Brad Moore on 4th down after an Akron score to give the Zips the win.

                        PAC 12: Colorado 56, Arizona State 20
Joel Thomas may have just won the Heisman with this performance and he wasn’t even the best player on the field. Thomas had 196 total yards and 3 touchdowns passing on an 85% completion percentage, but it was freshman RB Speedy Sasso who stole the show. Sasso had three touchdowns rushing and one receiving in the first half in this absolute blowout.

ACC: Clemson 34, North Carolina 31
Star sophomore QB AJ Spencer struggled for Clemson, completing only 52% of his passes. But he took care of the ball and led his team on a 4:53 drive to score the go ahead touchdown with just over two minutes left. His defense would get a fourth down stop and Clemson would leave their national title hopes to the polls.

Big Ten: Rutgers 28, Wisconsin 24
This was a sloppy one. Rutgers was outgained by 153 yards and had 3 turnovers. Four, yeah that’s right FOUR, redzone turnovers would cost Wisconsin in this one as you simply can’t score once in five redzone trips and expect to beat a team in a conference championship game.

                        Big 12: Houston 28, Baylor 24
As Lee Corso loves to say, this one was “closer than the experts think”. Houston outgained Baylor by over 150 yards and didn’t turnover the ball, but a kickoff return kept Baylor in the game while their defense kept getting Houston off the field. Both teams punted 5 times as there were only 6 total conversions on 23 third down attempts.

Will Clemson leap frog Georgia Tech or will the two top best losses in the country keep Georgia Tech in off a bye week?

                          Rose Bowl (1/1 4:30 pm)-#7 Rutgers (11-2) vs #4 Colorado (12-1)
Colorado ranks first in the country in scoring offense, second in total offense, and second in turnover differential. But Rutgers has the better defense ranked 15th in the country compared to Colorado’s 35th. Colorado should have the edge but something about Rutgers seems like it’ll lead to an upset. Kirk’s pick? Rutgers

                          Fiesta Bowl (1/1 8:00 pm)-#3 Georgia Tech (10-2) vs #11 Alabama (9-3)
The third best offense takes on the third best defense. Unfortunately for Alabama, they won’t get to show off their amazing pass defense as Georgia Tech almost exclusively runs the ball, going for 314.5 yards per game on the ground. Georgia Tech should play with something to prove after narrowly missing the National Championship Game. Kirk’s pick? Georgia Tech

                          Allstate Sugar Bowl (1/2 8:00 pm)-#6 Texas (11-2) vs #9 Wisconsin (11-2)
This is an extremely even matchup as Texas is 13th in scoring and Wisconsin is 12th. Wisconsin has the edge on defense, but Texas is coming off 6 straight wins and is clicking in the second half of the season. Coming off an SEC title win while Wisconsin is still reeling from their conference championship game loss, Texas enters the game as the favorite. Kirk’s pick? Texas

                          Orange Bowl (1/3 8:00 pm)-#5 Navy (10-2) vs #13 California (9-3)
Navy is very good at what they do, and that is running the ball and controlling the clock. They rank first in both rushing offense and total defense. However, Cal isn’t too shabby on offense and against the run on defense. This game should come down to who wins the turnover battle as both teams have a -1 turnover differential on the season. Kirk’s pick? Navy

                          AT&T Cotton Bowl (1/3 8:00 pm)-#16 Kentucky (9-3) vs Baylor (8-5)

                          BBVA Compass Bowl (1/4 12:30 pm)-Tennessee (6-6) vs USF (8-4)

                          GoDaddy Bowl (1/5 9:00 pm)-Eastern Michigan (8-5) vs UAB (7-5)

                          BCS National Championship (1/6 8:00 pm)-#2 Clemson (12-1) vs #1 Houston (13-0)
Houston has won 30 straight games dating back to 2018. They’re the defending National Champions and have actually played a tougher schedule than Clemson. That doesn’t stop the majority of America from picking Clemson and star sophomore QB AJ Spencer. Clemson has the better scoring offense, total defense, and ranks first in the country in turnover differential. Can they end Houston’s streak? Kirk’s pick? Clemson

Awards winners and All-Americans will come in a separate post at some point this weekend.

                            Game Notes
Coach Flight will have his undefeated bowl record tested as he takes on a top 10 team in the country. UNC QB Vincent Young (91 speed, 86 name) has reminded people of Vince Young throughout his career, and only partly because of his name. Young has 2882 passing yards, 948 rushing yards, and 39 total TDs on the year. Rushing QB's have been an issue for Arkansas all year, and they can't key in on Young. RB Keith Stewart (90 ovr) has 19 TDs on the year. Star WR's Nick Bell and Kelvin Brady are both expected to return after spending much of the season injured. Danny Bonds (87 speed) is one of the fastest TE's in the nation.
On defense, Jeremy Noble (93 ovr) wrecks havoc on offense with 22 TFL on the season. A deep secondary with speed everywhere is headlined by CB Matt Kilpatrick (90 ovr, 94 spd) who has 4 interceptions on the season, as well as SS Terry Dickerson (88 ovr, 96 spd) who has added 3 more.
Both teams have won 7 of their last 8, but North Carolina is coming off a tough ACCCG loss and is looking for revenge on somebody.

Razorbacks come up just short in comeback attempt
                              Written December 31, 2020

In what was a fairly even game in the box score, North Carolina would hold off a late Arkansas comeback attempt. This game felt like a blowout watching it until you checked the score and stats. The big plays by North Carolina proved to be the difference in this one, with four touchdowns of over 45 yards.

Even with four combined interceptions, this was a tremendous quarterback battle. Brian Bradford had 553 passing yards to go along with a 75 yard touchdown run. Meanwhile, Vincent Young completed 84% of his passes and had over 450 yards of total offense along with six touchdowns. Their games are more impressive when you consider both were harassed all game, with six sacks for Arkansas and five for UNC on the day.

It wasn’t just quarterback play in this one. Tar Heels running back Keith Stewart ran for 13.3 yards per attempt and 3 touchdowns. Three Arkansas receivers topped 100 yards, with Jonathan Frank stealing the show with 6 catches for 111 yards and three touchdowns.

Even with what felt like a dominating performance, the Tar Heels entered the third quarter only up 35-33. Both teams would then combine for 51 points , but it would be three straight UNC scores that would be too much for Arkansas to overcome. They certainly tried, as Frank would have two touchdowns in the final minute that were separated by the closest of onside kicks.

This is coach Flights first bowl loss as either a coordinator or head coach, as he came into this game with a 7-0 bowl record. “It’s disappointing but you obviously can’t win them all, this was bound to happen eventually,” said Flight in his post-game press conference. He added that his team played their hearts out and wishes he would have done a better job calling plays.

“I abandoned the run early and it cost us.” Arkansas did run the ball 27 times, but over half of those came from Bradford. It was evident why they abandoned the run with Mike Everson averaging only 2.5 yards per carry on his ten attempts.

Arkansas finished the year at 7-6, a result many fans would’ve been thrilled with after an 0-4 start. With Bradford having more experience next year, hopefully those early seasons woes are gone.

Jonathan Frank back jukes a defender for his first of three fourth quarter touchdowns.

Clint Brooks baits Bradford to force a key fourth quarter turnover.

Arkansas narrowly misses this onside kick as Damien Moore jumps over the ball.
