UPDATED 2024 NATIONAL RANKINGS (NCAA '14)

        WE’RE NO. 1!!!

It took B-Dawg 47 games to get Vanderbilt’s football program to the top, at least to the top of the national rankings.

The only time being No. 1 truly matters is at the end of the season, but moving to No. 1 in all three rankings is a sign that Vanderbilt is now a national title contender.

Vanderbilt vaulted from No. 3 to No. 1 after its 55-38 victory over then-No. 10 Georgia.

No. 2 Washington lost 38-17 to Utah. Previously top-ranked Ohio State won 34-7 over Rutgers, but was overtaken by Vanderbilt.

          2024/2009 SEASONS - GAME 8

Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams ran 20 times for 121 yards in addition to throwing five touchdown passes.

Oklahoma’s Kendall Dennis intercepted two passes, including one he returned for a touchdown.

          Unbeaten no more
QB who shouldn’t be at Oklahoma
          torches No. 1-ranked Vanderbilt

NORMAN, Okla. — Caleb Williams didn’t transfer from Oklahoma to USC soon enough.

Had Williams transferred one year earlier he wouldn’t have been on the 2021 rosters B-Dawg is using for this Vanderbilt dynasty.

So, instead of playing for USC, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2022, he remains at Oklahoma in the 2024 season of this dynasty.

That put top-ranked Vanderbilt in a difficult position when it visited Oklahoma on Oct. 21, 2024.

Williams shredded the Commodores in every way imaginable with his arm and his legs, leading the ninth-ranked Sooners to a 52-42 victory in a battle of unbeatens.

Williams was 26-for-31 for 347 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He also ran 20 times for 121 yards.

“He not only should be at USC by now, he should be in the NFL by now,” B-Dawg said. “For some reason, star players hang around in NCAA ’14 for four years, regardless of how great they play. We just couldn’t stop him. I expect the robo-QB nonsense, so the passing yards don’t shock me. How we allowed him to run that much for that many yards is what frosts my biscuits! I hate when a quarterback can run around freely without consequences.”

Oddly, Williams isn’t on the Heisman hype list despite throwing for 1,849 yards and 22 touchdowns and running for 294 yards and three scores while leading an undefeated team.

Vanderbilt freshman Greg Freeman showed he’s not quite at Williams’ level yet. Williams did throw for 489 yards and two touchdowns, going 34-for-50, but he also served up three interceptions. One of those was returned for a touchdown.

Freeman managed to keep pace with Williams, despite a pick-six in the third quarter by cornerback Kendall Dennis. An 18-yard run by Patrick Smith of Vanderbilt tied the game 35-35 with 1:29 left in the third quarter, but Williams hit Mario Williams with a 57-yard touchdown pass 20 seconds later to put the Sooners ahead to stay.

After a three-and-out by the Commodores, Oklahoma made it a two-possession game on a 1-yard run by Marcus Major with 7:27 left in the game. Vanderbilt responded with a 3-yard touchdown run by Dylan Betts-Pauley with 5:15 to go, but a field goal made it a 10-point game with 3:42 remaining.

Jalil Farooq of Oklahoma caught two touchdown passes in the final 55 seconds of the first half to give the Sooners a 28-21 halftime lead. An interception in between touchdowns proved to be critical.

“We may have bitten off more than we could chew by going to Oklahoma for a nonleague game with the difficult schedule we play,” B-Dawg said. “I may have cost us a shot at the natty by scheduling the Sooners, but we want to play big teams.”

Jalil Farooq caught two touchdown passes in the final minute of the first half.

          LSU scores 2 defensive TD’s,
gets well in 44-28 win over Vandy

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — It was turn-back-the-clock day on Halloween 2009 at Louisiana State.

For one day, LSU was a formidable football team again, not at all resembling the 2-5 squad that came into the game ranked No. 65 in the nation.

For one day, Vanderbilt was once again … well, Vanderbilt. With B-Dawg at the sticks, that usually means an avalanche of turnovers that show up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Kyle Hansbro returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown and Paul Burgess’ second interception of the game went 45 yards for a touchdown, as LSU beat 24th-ranked Vanderbilt 44-28 in the first meeting between the SEC schools in this dynasty. LSU is the only SEC team Vanderbilt hadn’t faced in the first three seasons of B-Dawg’s tenure.

Red-shirt freshman quarterback Antwan Smith even threw two interceptions after having 11 touchdown passes against only one pick. Smith did throw three touchdown passes, playing full-time after Mackenzi Adams struggled. Adams was 4-for-11 for 24 yards and two interceptions.

“It was only a matter of time before Antwan found out what it’s like to be controlled by me,” B-Dawg said. “I hope we can stop the bleeding next week and his numbers don’t go south, because he’s had amazing statistics considering he’s one of my quarterbacks.”

LSU built a 41-14 midway through the fourth quarter, limiting Vanderbilt to two long touchdown passes. Smith hit freshman Jason Toth with an 81-yard touchdown pass with 5:04 left in the second quarter and two-way threat Barry Sanders with an 88-yard aerial with 4:28 to go in the third. Both touchdowns were what B-Dawg calls “YAC specials.” Toth got 67 yards after the catch, while Sanders got 62 YAC.

The Commodores had a glimmer of hope after a 3-yard touchdown pass from Smith to tight end Jake Bradford and a 78-yard fumble return by linebacker Chris Johnson with 1:56 left made it a 41-28 game.

LSU recovered the onside kick, failed to get a first down and lined up for a 55-yard field goal. Quavian Lewis roughed the kicker while going for the block with 1:14 left, resulting in a first down and enabling the Tigers to kill the clock.

“It was a dumb move, because we had plus-2 momentum,” B-Dawg said. “There’s no way they would have made that kick and we would have gotten good field position. If we hit Toth on a streak, it’s a one-score game and who knows? You have to be careful about going for blocks this year, fo’ sho’.”

Toth had eight catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Broderick Stewart tied a Vanderbilt school record with three sacks. The Commodores had a dynasty-record 10 sacks as a team, but couldn’t contain running back Antonio Robinson. Robinson ran 30 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

            2024/2009 SEASONS - GAME 9

Terion Sugick sacks South Carolina quarterback Jesse Scott.

Backup tight end Max Rhodes bulls his way into the end zone for a touchdown catch.

James Ziglor takes off for a 16-yard touchdown run.

            CHANGES COMING
Vandy to make change at running back
            following blowout of South Carolina

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The game was long since over, but Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg is always watching, always evaluating players.

He saw enough of running back James Ziglor in a small sample size during mop-up duty to proclaim him the Commodores’ starting running back moving forward.

Ziglor scored the final touchdown of a 59-34 rout of South Carolina on Oct. 28, 2024 by using his speed to break off a 16-yard run on a buck sweep with 1:07 left in the game.

Yes, it was mop-up duty for the Commodores’ backups, but South Carolina still had its starters in the game.

And seeing a long touchdown run, even one that’s only 16 yards, was a breath of fresh air for B-Dawg.

Ziglor has made a name for himself as a return specialist, but he will be replaced on returns by wide receiver Curtis Cannon to keep him fresh on offense. Ziglor is Vanderbilt’s fastest running back with 91 SPD and 99 ACC. Previous starter Patrick Smith, who had 68 yards on 18 carries, has 86 SPD and 99 ACC.

“Those five points of SPD are noticeable when I have James Ziglor in my hands,” B-Dawg said, realizing how incredibly creepy that sounded.

Vanderbilt will sacrifice Smith’s 78 BTK and 99 CAR ratings for Ziglor’s 70 BTK and 83 CAR.

“But it’s not like Patrick Smith is bowling people over,” B-Dawg said. “I needed someone who can get to the edge and break off big plays.”

Smith has averaged only 3.6 yards per carry, running 161 times for 593 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 25-yard run in this game was his longest of the season. Ziglor has run 21 times for 119 yards, a 5.6-yard average.

While the change at running back was all anybody could talk about after the game, it was Vanderbilt’s passing combination of Greg Freeman and Michael Johnson who stole the show while the issue was in doubt.

Freeman was 32-for-44 for 479 yards, five touchdowns and two picks. Johnson hauled in 13 passes for 216 yards and two scores.

Freeman is 269-for-368 for 3,449 yards, 32 touchdowns and 10 picks as a freshman.

With Freeman running the show, Vanderbilt converted 13 of its first 14 third downs before having to punt for the only time. The defense held South Carolina to two first downs and three points in the first half.

Patrick Smith runs for a touchdown.

            AIN’T NOBODY SCURRED
            Vanderbilt leaves The Swamp
            with 33-31 victory over Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Swamp is one of the most intimidating places for a visiting college football team, but the Vanderbilt Commodores aren’t the least bit scurred.

Vanderbilt scored 16 straight second-half points and grabbed two key late interceptions in a 33-31 victory over the 24th-ranked Gators on Nov. 7, 2009. It’s the second consecutive time the 34th-ranked Commodores have won in Gainesville.

“In the interest of full disclosure, we had home-field advantage turned off two years ago in a little experiment to tone down the ravages of NCAA 2007 momentum,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “It was on and in full effect this time. Florida certainly had the momentum several times in this game, but it was a back-and-forth classic kind of game. We’d get up, they’d get up, we’d come back, we’d hold on and … we won.”

Vanderbilt got out to a 14-0 lead on a 3-yard pass from Antwan Smith to tight end Jonathan Massey and a 70-yard punt return by Jason Toth, his second return for a touchdown this season.

Florida came back to tie it 14-14 on two touchdown passes by Tim Tebow before Vanderbilt went into the halftime locker room with a 17-14 lead on Andre Diles’ 37-yard field goal as time expired.

The Gators (6-3) came out strong in the second half, going up 24-17 on Tebow’s third touchdown pass and a field goal.

The next surge was made by the Commodores (7-2), who scored 16 points in a row. The first nine came on three field goals by Diles before Massey grabbed his second touchdown catch with 1:40 left in the game to put Vanderbilt up 33-24.

A key play during that rally was an interception by D.J. Moore with 4:26 left in the game. Moore returned it to Vanderbilt’s 45-yard line to set up Diles’ go-ahead 37-yard field goal with 2:18 to go. The Gators went back on the attack in an effort to regain the lead, but linebacker Chris Johnson picked off a third-down pass with 1:51 remaining and returned it 30 yards to Florida’s 10-yard line. That set up Massey’s game-clinching touchdown.

Tebow threw his fourth touchdown pass with 23 seconds to go, but Justin Wheeler recovered the onside kick for Vanderbilt.

Tebow is one of the top quarterbacks in the country and looked like it, the two late picks notwithstanding. He went 42-for-59 for 399 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Nyan Boateng had 10 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown, but had a devastating drop in the end zone on third down with 2:53 left in the third quarter. Percy Harvin had seven catches for 101 yards and a touchdown, while Justin Williams had 11 catches for 82 yards.

Florida was held to three rushing yards on 15 carries, with only two sacks factoring into that total. The Gators did not have a play longer than 28 yards.

“We pretty much play man cover-2 and try to limit the big plays,” B-Dawg said. “We kept everything in front of us and didn’t get torched deep. We made them work their way down the field for everything they got.”

The punting game was huge for Vanderbilt. Not only did Toth had a punt return for a touchdown, but Kikko Logan sacked punter Matt Matthews for a 13-yard loss on a fake punt with 6:17 left in the first quarter, setting the stage for the Commodores’ first touchdown.

Vanderbilt had four receivers with four catches and another with three, as the Commodores continued to display a balanced attack following the graduation of all-everything receiver Earl Bennett.

Tight end gets 100 yards, DE a pick
                in Vanderbilt’s victory at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Things you don’t see every day: A defensive lineman intercepting a pass or a B-Dawg tight end getting 100 receiving yards.

Both happened for the seventh-ranked Commodores during a 38-27 victory over Kentucky on Nov. 4, 2024.

Tight end Trey Boll caught eight passes for 106 yards, the first 100-yard performance by a Vanderbilt tight end in the four-year 50-game run of this dynasty.

Even though the first touchdown of this dynasty was scored by a tight end, Ben Bresnahan, that position has been minimal part of the Commodores’ offense. Bresnahan had five touchdown catches that season, but Vanderbilt didn’t have a touchdown catch from a tight end in the last two seasons.

Tight ends had 9.4% of catches, 7.5% of receiving yards and 6.5% of touchdowns in the first three seasons of this dynasty.

“A tight end can cause opposing defenses trouble when used correctly,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “I just haven’t had the tight ends I’m comfortable with to feature in my offense. It’s not like I went into this trying to get the ball to Trey Boll; it just kinda happened that way.”

Boll has given the tight end position a higher profile, catching 46 passes for 498 yards and four touchdowns this season.

As for the pick by the defensive line, defensive end Justin King dropped off to spy quarterback Nik Scalzo in a 2-man-under nickel formation when the ball ended up in his mitts on the second play of the second half.

The only other interception by a defensive lineman in this dynasty was by defensive tackle Devin Lee last season.

“Those plays are pretty cool and you don’t really expect to see them very often,” B-Dawg said. “Scalzo had been running pretty well against us and I just wanted to be sure we had someone keeping an eye on him to limit his shenanigans.”

Kentucky led for much of the first half, building a 17-7 lead early in the second quarter. Vanderbilt fought back with two touchdowns in the final 5:03 of the first half and two more early in the second half to take a 35-17 lead.

Kentucky didn’t quit, cutting the lead to 35-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Defensive tackle Terion Sugick, who had three tackles for losses and was pretty much a beast all day, forced a fumble that Lee recovered with 4:19 left in the game to keep the Wildcats from getting any closer.

The Commodores clinched the SEC East championship, moving to 7-0 in the division. Florida is 6-1, but the Gators lost head-to-head to Vanderbilt.

Adrian Huey, an 86 OVR redshirt junior cornerback, had 15 tackles for Kentucky.

Marlen Sewell picks off a pass.

Kentucky takes 2 turnovers to house,
pulls off 27-24 upset of No. 29 Vandy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — B-Dawg tried to warn his Vanderbilt football players not to take Kentucky lightly.

                They didn’t listen.

The Commodores had built a 7-2 record and No. 29 national ranking, winning at Florida just one week earlier, but continued their struggles against lowly Kentucky in a 27-24 loss.

Turnovers were the culprit against the 80th-ranked Wildcats (4-7), who have beaten the Commodores three straight years.

Vanderbilt got out to a 10-0 lead, but Kentucky got momentum on a 33-yard interception return by strong safety Ray Herring with 7:53 left in the second quarter. That began a run of 24 straight points by the Wildcats, a streak that was capped by yet another touchdown off a turnover. Freshman Billy Jones fumbled the ball after a catch and it was scooped up by sophomore free safety Robbie Williams, who went 61 yards down the left sideline with 1:23 left in the third quarter to put Kentucky ahead 24-10.

“We got sloppy,” B-Dawg said. “You try to tell the guys they need to focus just as hard against Kentucky as they do against Florida or any of the so-called big boys in the SEC. I mean, those guys at Kentucky draw under-the-table money just like any other players in the SEC. Maybe not as much, but they’re still professional amateurs. You have to take them seriously, because they’ll make plays.”

Vanderbilt tried to come from behind, with Antwan Smith hitting freshman receiver Jason Toth with touchdown passes of 14 and 65 yards in the fourth quarter. However, Kentucky got a field goal in between the two scores, and that proved to be the difference.

Kentucky managed only one offensive touchdown against the Commodores, who had seven sacks. A 66-yard touchdown pass from Joe Jones to LaShun Watson came off a screen pass and a missed tackle by freshman safety Barry Sanders. The touchdown put Kentucky ahead to stay at 14-10 with 1:36 left in the first half.

“Other than that shoddy bit of tackling by Junior, our defense was rock-solid today,” B-Dawg said. “It just came back to our old bugaboo — turnovers. We’ve proven all season that when we protect the football, we can be one of the best teams in the country. We’re going to put this mess behind us now, because we still have a lot to play for.”

Another boneheaded move was a roughing-the-kicker penalty on Vanderbilt linebacker Chris Johnson on a missed field goal. Kentucky got a first down and eventually got a 34-yard field goal. Vanderbilt freshman Andre Diles, the leading candidate for the Groza Award, missed field goals of 48 and 44 yards.

Smith got the fewest passes in Vanderbilt’s two-quarterback system, but was the most effective thrower. Smith was 10-for-17 for 169 yards, three touchdowns and one pick. Fifth-year senior Mackenzi Adams was 16-for-28 for 168 yards, no touchdowns and no picks.

Toth caught four passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Jonathan Massey had the Commodores’ other touchdown on a 3-yard pass in the first quarter.

Center Bradley Vierling set a dynasty record with 10 pancakes.

Thanks! Hoping we don't gag and drop a game-winning touchdown pass like we did last season!

No upset this time! Putting together a solid case to make a big run.

If I don't commit stupid turnovers and don't get victimized by robo-QB nonsense, I don't feel like I should ever lose.

Of course, that stuff happens sometimes ...

Vanderbilt receiver Stuart Skinner hits the circle button on his way to the end zone with a 70-yard catch.

Vanderbilt receiver Michael Johnson had 10 catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Milestones and records are nice, but meaningless if they don’t contribute to victories.

Michael Johnson’s 100th catch of his remarkable sophomore season wasn’t merely statistical fluff.

Facing third-and-11 at Tennessee’s 23-yard line and needing a first down to put the game away, Johnson hit the century mark by making a 15-yard catch in traffic with 1:26 left in the game.

                          Mooda chains!!!

                          Ball game!!!

The seventh-ranked Commodores could just run out the clock from there and leave snow-covered Rocky Top with a 35-28 victory.

It was the final reception on a day in which Johnson broke the school single-season record for receptions. The previous mark built into NCAA ’14 was 97 by Keith Edwards in 1983. In reality, Jordan Matthews set the record of 112 in 2013, the season EA Sports’ most recent NCAA game released.

“We have a few games left, so I’m sure we can get Michael the real school record, so long as it’s within the confines of our offense,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “We would be silly not to. I can’t imagine our offense without him right now.”

Johnson had 10 catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Also reaching 100 yards was Quincy Skinner, who needed only two catches to finish at an even 100 because one was a 70-yard touchdown in which he hit the circle button to elude a defender on his way to the end zone.

Greg Freeman pulled the trigger on all those passing yards, finishing 28-for-38 for 415 yards and three touchdowns.

Vanderbilt was up 35-21 before Tennessee cut the margin to 35-28 on a 6-yard pass from Mike Johnson to Miles Campbell with 3:23 left in the game.

The Commodores dodged a bullet as they attempted to run out the clock, as Freeman fell on a fumble by running back Patrick Smith with 2:07 left in the game.

Getting the third-down catch to Johnson was crucial, because B-Dawg doesn’t trust his ability at the sticks on field goals. He hit the upright with a field goal attempt earlier in the game.

Freshman Keith Cunningham tackled Tennessee star running
back LaMarcus Coker for losses five times.

                          Hawkins outplays Vols’ Heisman candidate,
Vandy bounces back with win at Rocky Top

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt’s Jared Hawkins has never been in anybody’s Heisman Trophy conversation, because he lacks the speed of the nation’s top running backs and doesn’t get nearly as many carries.

Meanwhile, Tennessee’s LaMarcus Coker has been the toast of the Southeastern Conference all season.

Coker was third on this week’s Heisman watch list and has been SEC Offensive Player of the Week four times, rushing for 299 yards and putting up 373 yards from scrimmage just one week earlier against Maryland.

But when the two got together on the same gridiron on Nov. 21, 2009, it was no contest — Hawkins had the better day, hands-down.

Hawkins carried 23 times for 151 yards and a touchdown, as 34th-ranked Vanderbilt rebounded from last week’s loss to lowly Kentucky with a huge 23-3 victory at 10th-ranked Tennessee.

While Hawkins was successful finding running room against the Vols, the same couldn’t be said for Coker in his attempt to gain ground against the Commodores.

Coker was held to 86 yards on 24 carries, with most of those yards coming on a 46-yard run to Vanderbilt’s 15-yard line with 2:47 left in the third quarter. Safety Ryan Hamilton made a touchdown-saving tackle on the play, and Tennessee eventually had to settle for a field goal.

Coker averaged 166 yards a game before Saturday.

“Well, I guess he can kiss the Heisman Trophy goodbye,” B-Dawg said. “We had seen the hype surrounding Coker all season, but we were confident that our 4-2-5 defense could shut him down. They really should have passed the ball more, because it would have forced us into a different defense, but that’s the CPU’s A.I. for you.”

A huge reason for Coker’s sub-par effort was the play of freshman safety Keith Cunningham. Cunningham made five tackles for losses, all against Coker. Cunningham plays up near the line in the 4-2-5 and Tennessee kept testing him — and failing. As a team, Vanderbilt had 15 tackles for losses.

“Cunningham was rock-solid today,” B-Dawg said. “I can’t wait to see what this kid is like with another couple years of progression.”

It was a scoreless first quarter before Vanderbilt scored 10 points just 13 seconds apart early in the second quarter.

Andre Diles kicked a 24-yard field goal after the Commodores’ Chris Johnson forced a fumble by quarterback Montrell Jackson. Greg Billinger recovered the loose ball at Tennessee’s 26-yard line with 46 seconds left in the first quarter. It was the first of five Tennessee fumbles, three of which were lost on a rainy day at Rocky Top.

Johnson again forced a fumble on Tennessee’s first play after the field goal, this one by fullback Jamar Montoya at Tennessee’s 12-yard line. Cornerback D.J. Moore made the recovery for Vanderbilt. Hawkins scored on the first play from scrimmage, taking a 12-yard run up the middle to make it 10-0.

While the weather bothered the Volunteers the entire game, Vanderbilt did not put the ball on the ground a single time.

“The triangle button is your friend,” B-Dawg said.

In all, Tennessee had five turnovers to one for Vanderbilt. That accounts for how the Commodores managed to win by 20 points despite being outgained 308-210.

The Volunteers (9-2) got in the end zone once, but an 11-yard touchdown catch by tight end Lee Smith with 1:14 left in the game was reversed when it was determined Smith didn’t get a foot inbounds in the back of the end zone

Vierling, Stewart top list of award finalists

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Quavian Lewis has arguably been Vanderbilt’s best player this season, but it’s center Bradley Vierling and defensive end Broderick Stewart who are the only Commodores in the running for national awards.

Vierling and Stewart, in fact, are listed as favorites as the awards candidates have been trimmed from 12 semifinalists to three finalists.

Vierling is No. 1 for the Rimington Award, given to the nation’s top center. He has 31 pancakes and has given up only one sack.

Stewart has 12 sacks and 21 tackles for losses, putting him atop the list for the Lombardi Award, which goes to the top defensive lineman.

Lewis was a semifinalist on two lists, but wound up fifth for the Bednarik and sixth for Linebacker of the Year. Jonathan Massey was fourth for Tight End of the Year, Keith Cunningham eighth for the Thorpe and Andre Diles sixth for the Groza.

Vols secure SEC East with rout at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Well, the Vanderbilt Commodores could at least dream.

Vanderbilt might have earned a berth in the Southeastern Conference championship game if Kentucky was able to upset Tennessee, but the Volunteers were in a foul mood after losing the previous week to the Commodores.

Tennessee took out its frustration on Kentucky, rolling to a 56-0 victory on Nov. 28, 2009 to secure the SEC East championship and a spot in the league championship game against Auburn on Dec. 5 in the ATL.

Had Kentucky won, Tennessee would have finished in a four-way tie for first in the East at 5-3 with Florida, Georgia and Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt beat Tennessee and Florida head-to-head, so it’s possible the Commodores would have won the tie-breaker for a spot in the title game.

Tennessee’s LaMarcus Coker revived his Heisman Trophy candidacy by running 19 times for 136 yards and four touchdowns. Coker was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season. Teammate Dustin Lindsey also broke the 100-yard mark, running 19 times for 116 yards and a touchdown.

The Volunteers (10-2) outgained Kentucky 562-202. Montrell Jackson went 12-for-16 for 271 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

with go-ahead score in win vs. Purdue

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The records set by Paul Gibbons seemed destined to last for a while.

After all, B-Dawg’s all-time record for single-season touchdown catches was on the books since NCAA 2004 until Gibbons came along in the NCAA ’14 dynasty which precedes this one.

Gibbons set a record with 20 touchdown catches in the 2027 season while playing for Air Force, then bumped the mark to 21 in 2028. Before he came along, the record of 17 touchdown catches was set by Buffalo’s Sean Thurman, who was in B-Dawg’s Rollin’ With No. 117 dynasty in NCAA 2004 and matched by Vanderbilt’s Corey Burton in NCAA 2007.

So, it’s not like B-Dawg has these all-time receiving freaks just growing on trees.

But with memories of Gibbons’ exploits still fresh, Vanderbilt sophomore Michael Johnson is staking a claim as an all-time great in this dynasty.

Johnson’s 34-yard touchdown catch from Greg Freeman with 7:16 left in the game gave Vanderbilt a lead it wouldn’t relinquish in a 35-24 victory over Purdue.

It was Johnson’s 22nd touchdown catch of the season with two games remaining, the SEC championship game against Alabama and a bowl game.

“I’ve become more of an aerial specialist in my old age,” B-Dawg said. “I identify great receiving talent and ride them. Michael will probably break all of Gibbons’ records before he’s done.”

Not to be overshadowed, Vanderbilt cornerback John Howse was a one-man wrecking crew.

With the Commodores trailing 17-14, he intercepted a third-and-five pass on the first possession of the second half.

He then snuffed out Purdue’s last attempt at a comeback, blitzing from a Nickel Cover-2 to get a sack and force a fumble that defensive tackle Terion Sugick pounced on with 1:40 left in the game.

Curtis Cannon grabs a touchdown pass.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Play this game long enough and you’ll see something you’ve never seen before.

For Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg, such a moment took place early in the game as his 31st-ranked Commodores traveled to 71st-ranked Western Michigan in the 2009 regular-season finale.

B-Dawg has never thrown a touchdown pass with a punter before in hundreds upon hundreds of games of NCAA Football and Madden, but an historic breakthrough came in the early stages of a 34-6 rout of the Broncos.

Facing fourth-and-6 at Western Michigan’s 40-yard line on its first possession, Vanderbilt called for a fake punt. It helped that the team’s punter, Josh Hayden, was recruited as an athlete and has 92 THP and 80 THA to go with his 84 KPW and and 76 KAC.

Hayden hit free safety Barry Sanders on a deep slant that went for a 40-yard touchdown with 6:18 left in the first quarter. Sanders broke an attempted tackle by Robert Livingston on his way to the end zone.

“I knew we could run some successful fakes with someone like Josh as our punter, but never in my wildest wet dreams did I imagine we could throw a 40-yard touchdown pass off punt formation,” B-Dawg said. “I had to change my pants after that one.”

The touchdown pass by Hayden got momentum rolling the Commodores’ way and it never left their side.

Antwan Smith threw two touchdown passes before the first quarter ended to put Vanderbilt up 21-0. Smith finished 13-for-18 for 107 yards and three touchdowns.

Vanderbilt (9-3) led 28-0 early in the second quarter and managed only two field goals the rest of the game. The Commodores didn’t need any more points, as their defense remained incredibly tough. Vanderbilt held Western Michigan to two field goals, extending its streak of not allowing a touchdown to 10 quarters.

“I absolutely cannot believe the way our defense is playing,” B-Dawg said. “I really think we can compete with anyone in the country right now. Between my scheme and the inevitable boost we’ll get in recruiting from this season, I think we’re on the verge of becoming a national powerhouse.”

Vanderbilt had four interceptions, including one by Sanders. Sanders is the first B-Dawg player to have an interception and a touchdown catch in the same game. Little-used safety Joel Caldwell stopped a possible touchdown drive with an interception in the end zone with 4:22 left, as the Commodores’ backups finished the game.

The Commodores left fifth-year senior quarterback Mackenzi Adams in the game long enough to break the 10,000-yard mark for his career. Adams is 758-for-1,300 for 10,008 yards, 64 touchdowns and 57 interceptions in his four years as the team’s starting quarterback. B-Dawg also worked on getting Smith enough passes to qualify for the national passing rating lead. Smith has a 185.0 quarterback rating, going 80-for-125 for 1,134 yards, 20 touchdowns and five picks.

There was some bad news for Vanderbilt, which will play its bowl game without impact outside linebacker Kikko Logan. Logan suffered a season-ending torn shoulder muscle late in the third quarter.

Western Michigan went undefeated last season, routing Vanderbilt 55-25 in Nashville. The Broncos were devastated by graduation losses and are back to their usual ways, finishing 4-8.

Alabama QB to win SEC championship

THE ATL — Just as he did in the national semifinals against Michigan in real life, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe proved he’s a great runner who can’t pass worth a lick.

                                Too soon?

OK, low blow, but B-Dawg is still reveling in his Wolverines’ victory over the Crimson Tide three days before the writing of this report, the greatest moment he’s seen in 53 years as a Michigan football fan.

Getting back to the virtual gridiron, that assessment seems pretty accurate for the way Milroe played in a 37-17 loss to Vanderbilt in the 2024 Southeastern Conference championship game.

Milroe ran 15 times for 94 yards, serving notice his speed would be something the Commodores would have to deal with when he ran for 33 yards on Alabama’s first play. However, a few plays later, he coughed up the ball while scrambling, the first of his two fumbles.

As a passer, Milroe was 22-for-33 for 197 yards, two interceptions and no touchdowns. There’s no way a CPU quarterback should throw for less than 90% or fewer than 300 yards against what passes as a B-Dawg defense.

Vanderbilt freshman Greg Freeman, on the other hand, rose to the occasion. He was 26-for-44 for 330 yards, three touchdowns and no picks. Freeman threw in 34 yards on nine carries.

Sophomore receiver Michael Johnson somewhat atoned for a dropped pass against Alabama that cost the Commodores the SEC championship last season, grabbing 10 passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns.

Alabama cut a 13-0 deficit to 13-10 with 3:23 left in the second quarter, but Freeman threw touchdown passes to Curtis Cannon and Johnson in the final 1:40 of the first half to open up a 27-10 lead.

A key moment early in the game came when Vanderbilt cornerback John Howse picked off a pass in the end zone with 2:03 left in the first quarter after Alabama had first-and-goal at the 1-yard line.

Marlen Sewell had Vanderbilt’s other interception and had three deflections.

It was a statement win for sixth-ranked Vanderbilt, which is 12-1 and hoping to sway the voters and computers to earn a spot in the BCS championship game.

Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg hoists the SEC championship trophy.
