DONTE LEE JR GETS BEHIND THE DEFENSE FOR A 65 YARD SCORE
      ---

Kent, Ohio – Tommy Ulatowski threw for 356 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Gavin Garcia contributed a pair of rushing touchdowns as Kent State improved their record to 2-2 with a 30-7 win over Massachusetts on Saturday.

The Flashes offense put up 452 yards while the defense held the Minutemen to just 189 yards. Kent State rolled up 22 first downs while UMass could only muster eight.

Garcia did not rack up a ton of yardage on the ground but he tallied 111 all-purpose yards and scored a pair of first half rushing touchdowns.

Ulatowski connected with Donte Lee Jr on a 65 yard bomb for a touchdown to put Kent State up 20-0 midway through the second quarter and then threw a second touchdown pass to Chrishon McCray from 16 yards out just before halftime to make it 27-0.

UMass managed to avoid the shutout when Cookie Desiderio scored on a two yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Will Hryszko, who missed an extra point and a field goal earlier in the game, added a 24 yard field goal late in the fourth to make it 30-0.

Kent State's new-look offensive line held the defense to just one sack of Ulatowski but they appeared to struggle in the running game at times.

Kent State will have next week off before opening up MAC play at Akron on October 11th.

          Offensive Coordinator Jordan McAlary
          By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | September 29, 2025

Each week in the days following Kent State's game I will spend a few moments chatting with members of the coaching staff. I'll share some key points in this column.

This morning I spoke with offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary following Kent State's home win over UMass.

A good bounce back game for the offense with over 450 yards and scoring 30. Can you talk about what it takes to have a game like that?
Well the old cliché is that it starts up front and it's true. We reshuffled the line over the bye week and those guys did a nice job in pass pro. I think we have a bit of work to do in run blocking but Tommy stayed upright for most of the game so that certainly helped.

You have another week off before you'll head to Akron for the Wagon Wheel. Conference opener. The makings of a big game. What sort of extra prep goes into a game in this situation?
The extra week of prep is good anytime. It's nice to have before you get into conference games for sure. Allows a reset a bit. Maybe make some changes to the playbook. Get guys healthy. They've had the wagon wheel for a bit now and I know there's a bunch of us that would like to have it back.

This week's player of the week?
Gavin Garcia. Not huge yardage numbers on the ground but fought hard for what he did get. Over 100 yards all-purpose. A couple scores. Nice game for him.

WITH FOUR RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS CURTIS DOUGLAS CERTAINLY DID EAT
                  ---

Akron, Ohio – After having leaned heavily on the passing game in their win over UMass two weeks ago Kent State hit the ground running against Akron. When the dust had settled the Flashes ran for a total of 248 yards with Gavin Garcia and Curtis Douglas both contributing over 100 yards. Douglas made the most of his touches in the redzone, scoring four times all on runs from inside the ten yard line.

Garcia did not find the endzone but also added 90 yards receiving, just behind Chrishon McCray's 108 to lead the team.

Tommy Ulatowski threw for 325 yards on 27 of 43 passing with the only blemish being a pick six in the second quarter.

Kent State led 17-0 after a pair of Douglas rushing touchdowns and a Will Hryszko field goal before Akron was finally able to get on the board with an 18 yard touchdown pass from Ben Finley to Justin Campbell. After a missed kick the Golden Flashes led 17-6. Hryszko added another field goal before Akron's Tyquan Wallace picked off Ulatowski's pass over the middle and took it to the house, making it 20-13 Kent State at the break.

Douglas would score another touchdown in the third quarter followed by another Hryszko field goal and then Douglas' final touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Akron's Myles Walker would catch a TD pass from Finley late to make the score a bit more respectable with the Zips adding a two point conversion for good measure.

“You always say it's just another game because that's what you're supposed to say.” Tommy Ulatowski said after the win. “This one is definitely not!”

Kent State will travel to face Northern Illinois next week.

Each week in the days following Kent State's game I will spend a few moments chatting with members of the coaching staff. I'll share some key points in this column.

This morning I spoke with offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary following Kent State's win over Akron in which they re-claimed the Wagon Wheel.

A convincing win on the road. A conference game. A rivalry game. Everyone feeling good after that?
Yeah I mean you always feel good after any win. Add the fact that it was on the road, in conference for the wheel and yeah, we're feeling pretty good.

Heavy emphasis on the run in the win. 55 runs to 43 passes. Also a lot of plays. What was the strategy there?
We felt like with our size up front we would have an advantage in the running game and we felt like if we added in running a high number of plays we could wear down their front seven, get our backs to the second level and wear them down as well.

I think I may have a pretty good idea on Player of the Week. Who do you have?
Yeah obviously Curtis had a monster game for us but Gavin did a great job in the run game as well as the passing game and the guys up front put in the work to make that all possible. So Curtis for sure but really a team effort as it really always is when anyone has a big game.

GAVIN GARCIA CELEBRATES ONE OF HIS FOUR TOUCHDOWNS
                          ---

DeKalb, Illinois - Every once in a while a team will play a game where it seems like everything clicks. Kent State had one of those games yesterday (mostly), putting up 63 points and over 600 yards of total offense while picking up a whopping 39 first downs, six shy of a record, in an absolute dismantling of Northern Illinois.

"You don't get games like this too often." Head Coach Tyson Veidt said of Kent State's performance. "Not flawless but a lot went right."

Aside from a pair of interceptions, one of which NIU returned for a touchdown, the Flashes could do no wrong.

Gavin Garcia started things off for Kent State, scoring on a two yard run to cap their first drive. Garcia, who was a bit overshadowed in the last game while Curtis Douglas racked up four touchdowns, received a heavy workload as he carried the ball 33 times and picking up 166 yards and four touchdowns in the win. He also caught three passes for 12 yards.

Tommy Ulatowski connected with Dontrell Bennett for a nine yard score a few minutes later, giving Kent State a 14-0 lead. Things went south at the end of the first quarter with Ulatowski turning the ball over on back to back possessions leading to a 14-0 run for NIU after which they led 17-14 early in the first quarter. NIU would not score again while Kent State went on to score 49 unanswered points to secure their third straight win.

Ulatowski finished the day with 320 yards and four touchdowns on 25 of 33 passing.

Chrishon McCray also had a monster day, tallying three touchdowns and 134 yards on nine receptions.

Kent State's defense came to play as well, holding NIU to just 208 total yards of offense.

                              By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | October 21, 2025

Each week in the days following Kent State's game I will spend a few moments chatting with members of the coaching staff. I'll share some key points in this column.

This morning I spoke with offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary following Kent State's dominant win over Northern Illinois.

A big lopsided win over Northern Illinois. Any negatives?
There are almost always negatives in a win and positives in a loss. I guess the first thing that comes to mind from that game would be the turnovers.

Leaned on the run again. 53 rushes to 35 passes. Is that the game plan going forward?
You just get in a groove and go with what's working sometimes and that's where we're at right now. We didn't go in expecting to run the ball 53 times.

Player of the Week. Are you able to pick just one?
There's a few ways we can go here, you've seen the stats. I'm focusing up front. Obidegwu had 11 pancakes, Bittner had 7, Doulong 6, Bujnowski and Morell 5 each. One sack. Dominant performance that really allowed us to do what we wanted to as an offense.

Three star defensive tackle Brian Freeland and three star offensive tackle David Addison have announced their commitments. Freeland, from Portage, Michigan, has elected to stay in-state and sign with Western Michigan. Addison has chosen Bowling Green. Both players were believed to have Kent State close to the top of their boards. Kent State's class sits at four total players, all three stars. They have not secured a commitment in a few weeks.

"We're really close with a lot of players that we really like." A source with the team said when we reached out.
