That was the one that surprised me the most outside of championship contender. We were 23rd coming off winning a Natty, but 3rd this season. But seeing the progression from where all the recruiting rankings started to here is pretty cool.

Heck even Syracuse's is cool to see. They jumped a whole * ranking in prestige in just one season

LEFT - JC Hoag's elusiveness is in mid-season form. The sophomore picked up right where he left off with 90 yards on only 10 carries.
CENTER - The lone miscue from Seri was this floater on an out route that was nabbed by Army.
RIGHT - Jason Veasy doing....something after getting the 4th quarter sack. The sophomore had 1 of the Orange's 6 sacks on the day.

Syracuse, NY. - If there was any question about who should be leading the Syracuse offense, sophomore quarterback Dennis Seri may have provided the answer.

After a sluggish first half from Jumaane Cox and Marshall transfer Trevante Ismail, Seri erupted in the third quarter, throwing for 238 yards and four touchdowns in just two quarters of play. The redshirt sophomore put on a clinic, showcasing elite ball placement, most notably on a stunning 71-yard bomb to Carlos Simms that left the coaching staff exchanging impressed glances.

Head coach Nash Savage didn’t hold back in his postgame remarks:
“I think we found our quarterback.”

Cox, the expected starter, finished with a modest 6-for-9 passing for 81 yards and one touchdown but struggled under pressure, taking two sacks. Ismail, despite throwing two touchdown passes, was inconsistent, completing just 9 of 16 attempts for 97 yards and an interception.

Then came Seri. The southpaw immediately energized the offense, leading a three-play, 63-yard drive capped off by a 43-yard strike to Elton Romberg. On the next possession, he found Felix Redwine for a 39-yard score before answering Army’s lone touchdown with a perfectly placed 71-yard pass to Simms.

Syracuse’s defense, a dominant force last season, looked just as formidable in the opener. The unit racked up six sacks, forced a fumble, snagged an interception, and even recorded a safety. Outside of one blown coverage that led to an 84-yard touchdown, the Orange locked down Army’s offense from start to finish.

With the quarterback picture now much clearer, Syracuse turns its attention to a massive Week 2 showdown against No. 5 Florida in the Aflac Season Kickoff at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. If Dennis Seri’s breakout performance was any indication, the Orange may have found their leader for the season ahead.

Is Seri your first lefty?? Great way to earn it.... 8/9 with 4 TD's... Wish Hawkins could put up stats like that.

He is! I don't know if you remember, I think it was in your Coach Scott dynasty, but I mentioned always wanting a lefty and never being able to find one. Lucked out and there was one on the roster! I was hoping he'd progress more in the offseason, but he's got 94THP and the best of the 3 in deep accuracy to go with 91 speed, 91 acceleration, and 90 COD. As long as we can limit turnovers we should have a pretty explosive offense again.

Side note, I had never seen the Aflac Kickoff Game before. It was part of the auto schedule before the season, but is set up as a neutral site at Mercedez Benz in Atlanta like it would be in real life. Wonder if this is a new feature, or my past teams were just never selected for it?? Kinda cool though especially with it being an SEC vs ACC matchup

LEFT - Spencer Vernon diving for the pylon to put Syracuse up for good 21-18 with 3:14 left in the 4th.
CENTER - Joe Baca with the play of the game to that point, undercutting WR Felix Redwine and turning defense into offense with the 65 yard touchdown return putting the Gators up 18-14 early in the 4th.
RIGHT - Leo Tauscher with the sideline INT in front of Coach Savage, setting up the Orange for Dennis Seri's 1 yard TD run and a 14-3 halftime lead.

Atlanta, GA. - No. 2 Syracuse overcame a turnover-plagued performance from quarterback Dennis Seri, leaning on a dominant defensive effort to take down No. 5 Florida, 35-25, in the 2029 Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Despite throwing four interceptions, Seri delivered when it mattered most, leading two clutch fourth-quarter touchdown drives to seal the Orange victory. Meanwhile, Syracuse’s defense, dubbed the “Cuse Crushers,” wreaked havoc all night, racking up 10 sacks and forcing three takeaways to keep Florida at bay.

The first quarter was a defensive stalemate, with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm. Syracuse’s opening drive ended in disaster when Seri, hit as he threw, lofted a weak pass that Florida defensive tackle Vantrise Virgin intercepted. However, the Orange defense quickly responded, as cornerback Dalvin Holley picked off Florida quarterback Darrell Combs on the ensuing possession.

After a missed 56-yard field goal by Florida and several punts, Syracuse finally broke the deadlock with a 63-yard strike from Seri to Felix Redwine. A long Florida drive resulted in a 29-yard field goal from Jameson Egnew, but Syracuse answered right before halftime. A clutch sideline interception by safety Leo Tauscher set up Seri’s 1-yard touchdown run, giving the Orange a 14-3 lead at the break.

Florida opened the second half with a quick three-and-out, but Syracuse immediately squandered a golden opportunity. On the first play of the drive, Florida’s Kenyon Sizemore picked off Seri, sparking a 15-play Florida possession that ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Combs to Alex Hynoski. A successful two-point conversion cut the Syracuse lead to 14-11.

Syracuse’s struggles continued in the fourth quarter when linebacker Joe Baca jumped a drag route, returning an interception 65 yards for a touchdown to give Florida its first lead at 18-14. Things went from bad to worse on the very next play, as Seri was picked off again—Sizemore’s second of the night and Florida’s fourth overall.

But the Orange defense refused to let the game slip away. A pair of sacks forced a Florida punt, giving Seri a chance at redemption. This time, the sophomore quarterback delivered, orchestrating a 10-play drive that leaned heavily on the run game. Seri’s 9-yard screen pass to Spencer Vernon, who dove over the pylon, put Syracuse back on top, 21-18, with 3:19 to play.

Florida’s next possession ended in disaster, as the “Cuse Crushers” notched sacks on three consecutive plays—one each from linebacker Sean Schlauderaff, defensive tackle Alex Clinton, and defensive end Jason Veasy. Forced into a desperate fourth-and-29 from their own 2-yard line, Combs tried to find Hynoski on a drag route, but that was intercepted by linebacker Max Shaver. One play later, JC Hoag punched in a 9-yard touchdown run to give Syracuse a commanding 28-18 lead with under two minutes remaining.

Florida made one final push, as Combs completed four straight passes, capping the drive with a 4-yard touchdown to Hynoski to cut the deficit to 28-25. However, an unsuccessful onside kick allowed Syracuse to run down the clock, and Hoag added a 1-yard insurance touchdown with 18 seconds left to put the game away.

Syracuse’s defense was relentless, tallying 10 sacks, including 3.5 from Clinton, 2.5 from Schlauderaff, and two from Veasy. Florida’s defense was just as aggressive, forcing four interceptions, but in the end, Syracuse’s resilience proved too much.

Meanwhile in Manhattan, Kansas, Nash Savage’s former team, Ball State, made a statement of its own. The Cardinals dominated No. 15 Kansas State, 48-7, behind quarterback Titus Awe’s six-touchdown masterpiece—fueling speculation about a potential Big 12 invitation for the program.

For Syracuse, however, all eyes are on a championship run, and despite the rocky performance, Dennis Seri may have taken a key step forward in leading the way.

I do remember you mentioning wanting a Lefty so it's cool you finally got one. I have had good luck with them except my current backup McCrae is struggling.

I think the neutral site might have been a add in the last update. I had one this season playing Florida in a ACC/SEC at Bank of America in Charlotte. Which is also home of where i play the ACC Championships game cause I wanted a neutral site for the game

Nash Savage Joins The Pat McAfee Show

Pat McAfee: “Ladies and gentlemen, it is my absolute pleasure to welcome back a man who has quickly become one of my favorite coaches in college football—Syracuse head coach Nash Savage! Coach, what the hell happened last season?! I thought we had you booked to celebrate your new gig AND a National Championship!”

Nash Savage: “You did, Pat. But after the way we handled your Mountaineers, I figured maybe you weren’t all that eager to have me on.”

PM: “Ahhh, yeah, I remember that one… a little TOO well. We had you lined up after the conference championships, but then—BOOM—Sark gets canned at Texas, and we had to adjust the lineup. But now that you bring it up… yeah, I was still a little pissed about that game.”

NS: “Well, if it’s any consolation, that wasn’t even our biggest win of the season.”

PM: “Alright, alright, let’s move on before I start getting worked up again! Let’s talk about this year. First off—congratulations on that absolute thriller against Florida in the Aflac Kickoff! I’ve covered a ton of those games, but from a fan’s perspective, that was one of the best we’ve seen. You guys closed that thing out in style.”

NS: “Appreciate that, Pat. It might have been exciting for the fans, but on the sideline? That one was a grinder. We had to fight through some adversity, but I’m proud of how the guys responded and finished strong.”

PM: “Speaking of adversity—your QB, Seri, had a tough first start. Couple turnovers early and then again late. How do you manage a young guy’s confidence in an environment like that—essentially a road game—where things start going sideways?”

NS: “You remind him to trust what got him there. We go back to the fundamentals—his reads, his progressions, keeping his eyes in the right spots. And if we need to simplify things? We do it. Cut the field in half, give him quick decisions, let him use his legs. Seri’s a dynamic athlete—so we told him, ‘If the first two reads aren’t there, go make a play.’ And you saw it in the fourth quarter—he took off on a couple of big runs that really got us rolling after those interceptions.”

PM: “Now, I heard you had your former QB, Kadin Semonza, in camp this spring working with the quarterbacks. That guy was a magician in the pocket. If I remember right, he had 40 rushing touchdowns in his career?”

NS: “49, Pat. And yeah, Kadin had an unbelievable feel for the game. I heard he was heading to Ball State to work with Titus, so I made a call and got him to swing by ‘Cuse Camp during our QB competition. Thought he could pass along some of that knowledge to the next generation.”

PM: “How was it reconnecting with Kadin after everything you guys built at Ball State?”

NS: “It was great. We hadn’t had much time to catch up outside of a few texts since I took the Syracuse job. But watching him work with our QBs, seeing his understanding of the game—he’s got a real future in coaching.”

PM: “What’s he up to now? Last I checked, he was an undrafted free agent, got cut in camp, then I heard he was in the UFL for a bit, but I haven’t seen him pop up on any preseason rosters this year.”

NS: “Yeah, he gave the UFL a shot, but he was mostly a depth piece. Funny you ask, though—after watching how he handled himself at camp, I pulled him aside and told him, ‘You’ve got a real future in coaching if that’s something you want to explore.’ He was interested but didn’t want to close the door on playing. So we offered him a role as an assistant QB coach with the flexibility to take any pro contract that comes his way. Keeps him in the game, keeps him growing, and he doesn’t have to give up on his dream just yet.”

PM: “He’s only 26, right? How’s that dynamic, coaching guys that are just a few years younger than him?”

NS: “They respect him. I mean, he’s a two-time Heisman winner—most of these kids grew up watching him. But more importantly, he’s living proof that talent alone isn’t enough. Having someone in the room who’s been through it, who’s had to grind at every level, that’s invaluable. He’s already making an impact.”

PM: “Same reason you had David Goggins back at spring camp, right? That dude is a MANIAC.”

NS: “Absolutely, Pat. Goggins is different. He doesn’t just talk about mental toughness—he lives it. His message resonates with our guys because it’s real. And honestly? If he played football, I have zero doubt he’d be an All-American linebacker.”

PM: “Alright, Coach, let’s talk about what’s next. You survived Florida, now after the bye week, you’re heading into Kyle freakin’ Field. You’ve been in some rowdy places—Penn State last year, for example—but nothing is quite like Kyle Field. You ever been there before?”

NS: “Not in person, but I do my homework. Kyle Field is organized chaos. Their fans don’t just show up and scream—they train for this. You’ve got teams worried about pregame walkthroughs, and meanwhile, Aggie fans are out there practicing how to rattle the opponent. Texas football is just different.”

PM: “Alright, before we wrap, I gotta ask about your old squad—Ball State. You haven’t said much publicly about Kliff Kingsbury leaving for Michigan. Any thoughts on that or where Ball State football stands right now?”

NS: “Look, I get it—people make decisions based on what’s best for them. But let’s be honest—the plan was for Kliff to help guide Ball State into a Power Five conference before taking a bigger job. That was the understanding when he signed on. And then? He left before that goal was met. I know there’s some frustration there, even if no one says it outright.”

PM: “But you still believe Ball State is in a good place?”

NS: “Absolutely. Mike Bloomgren is a heck of a coach. And that season-opening win over Kansas State? That wasn’t just a win—that was a statement.”

PM: “You think they deserve a Power Five promotion?”

NS: “Find me a program with a better résumé over the last five years, Pat. Four straight 10+ win seasons. Four conference titles. Three CFP appearances. ELEVEN wins over ranked Power Five teams. If that’s not enough, then I don’t know what is.”

PM: “Coach, if I had a seat on the CRC, they’d have my vote! But before we go—one last thing. You’re coming to Morgantown this year to play my Mountaineers. Maybe take it easy on ‘em this time?”

NS: “Milan Puskar Stadium is a great place, Pat. We’ll try our best not to hang 70 on ‘em.”

PM: “JESUS. Alright, Coach Nash Savage, ladies and gentlemen! Always a pleasure, Coach—good luck the rest of the way!”

LEFT - Last time the Orange broke out the HB Pass? Last season at Beaver Stadium. This time HC Nash Savage called for the trick play to open the 2nd half and balloon the lead to 28-6.
CENTER - Mike Awesome ending a promising opening drive by the ORange with the endzone INT on a boneheaded throw by QB Dennis Seri.
RIGHT - Deron Wusu nabbing the 1st of four INTs for the Orange, taking this one back 75 yards.

College Station, TX. - The top-ranked Syracuse Orange (2-0) flexed their dominance on both sides of the ball Saturday night, dismantling #19 Texas A&M (1-1) by a score of 34-6 at Kyle Field. A strong defensive performance and big plays through the air propelled the Orange to a statement win on the road.

The game opened with both teams showing early offensive promise, but neither could find the end zone in the first quarter. Syracuse’s opening drive, an 11-play march down the field, ended in frustration when quarterback Dennis Seri forced a pass into double coverage in the end zone, resulting in an interception by Aggies safety Mike Awesome. Texas A&M capitalized on their opening possession with a 51-yard pass from Elijah Granger to Angelo Rojas, but a sack on third down forced them to settle for a 46-yard field goal by Angel Manning.

Syracuse responded in the second quarter with a methodical 17-play drive, culminating in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Seri to Carlos Simms to take a 7-3 lead. The Orange defense then took over, as cornerback Deron Wusu intercepted Granger’s ill-advised throw and raced 75 yards for a pick-six, making it 14-3.

Syracuse continued its aerial assault when Seri connected with Felix Redwine on a 65-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead to 21-3. Texas A&M showed some life before halftime, with Rojas again making a big play—a 60-yard reception—but FS Tucker Colman’s hustle tackle saved a potential touchdown. The Aggies settled for another field goal, making it 21-6 at halftime.

A&M’s offense struggled to find rhythm in the second half, going three-and-out on the opening drive. Syracuse, however, dug into their bag of tricks. Head coach Nash Savage dialed up a familiar play—a halfback pass from converted QB Spencer Vernon, who launched a 44-yard touchdown to Elton Romberg. The trick play stunned the Kyle Field crowd and pushed the lead to 28-6.

With the game firmly in control, Syracuse relied on its running game and defense to close out the contest. Kicker Desmond Brewer added two field goals in the fourth quarter, while the Orange defense suffocated Texas A&M. Granger’s frustrating night ended with three fourth-quarter interceptions as the Aggies failed to find the end zone.

The Syracuse defense was relentless, sacking Granger six times (four in the first half, two in the second) and forcing four interceptions. The aggressive pass rush and lockdown secondary made life miserable for the Aggies’ offense, which mustered only two field goals despite multiple trips into scoring territory.

Meanwhile up North, Ball State has embraced an underdog mentality following head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s abrupt departure, fueling their unexpected 3-0 start. The Cardinals avenged last season’s College Football Playoff loss to #17 Boston College with a 56-21 blowout, as junior quarterback Titus Awe torched the Eagles for six touchdowns and 435 yards. Awe followed up with another stunning performance, throwing for 432 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-21 upset over Kingsbury’s new team, #3 Michigan, at the Big House.

Syracuse continues its march through a grueling schedule, proving why it sits atop the rankings. With a dominant defense and explosive offense, the Orange look every bit the national championship contender. Texas A&M, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as SEC play looms.

LEFT - The Cuse Crushers only tallied 3 sacks in the contest, bu their effort caused Duke to be flagged for 5 holding penalties as they desperately tried to keep the QB up right.
CENTER - Deron Wusu laying the wood late in the 1st Q to set up Spencer Vernon's 27 yard TD and a early 14-0 Orange lead.
RIGHT - Duke QB Erik Perrilloux broke through with a 74 yard pass to Owen Godfrey, that culminated in a 4 yard TD for the WR, but in an attempt to duplicate that success Perriloux instead found Wusu.

Syracuse, NY. - The top-ranked Syracuse Orange (3-0) continued their dominant start to the season with a commanding 49-7 victory over the Duke Blue Devils (2-1) on Saturday. Behind a balanced offensive attack and a suffocating defense, the Orange left no doubt about their standing as the nation’s best team.

Duke’s opening possession ended in disaster as cornerback Deron Wusu forced a fumble, setting up Syracuse’s 2nd touchdown of the night—a 27-yard strike from Dennis Seri to Spencer Vernon. Before the turnover, Seri capped off the 'Cuse opening drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Orange a quick 14-0 lead.

The second quarter saw more of the same, as Syracuse extended its lead with a 22-yard touchdown run from JC Hoag and an 11-yard scamper from Vernon. Duke managed to get on the board late in the quarter, with quarterback Erik Perilloux finding Owen Godfrey for a short 3-yard touchdown pass after a 74 yard catch and run. However, Syracuse responded immediately, with Vernon hauling in a 5-yard touchdown reception from Seri to send the game into halftime with a 35-7 lead.

Statistically, the first half told the story of the game—Syracuse piled up 340 yards of offense (191 passing, 149 rushing), while Duke struggled to find any traction on the ground, managing just nine rushing yards and 141 total yards.

While the third quarter went scoreless, the Syracuse defense took over. Duke’s offensive line struggled mightily, as the “Cuse Crushers” defensive front only recorded three sacks but forced five holding penalties, stifling any offensive rhythm for the Blue Devils. Perilloux threw interceptions in both the third and fourth quarters, preventing any hope of a Duke comeback.

Syracuse put the finishing touches on the victory in the fourth quarter, with Hoag finding the end zone twice on the ground, scoring from 1 and 13 yards out to extend the final margin to 49-7. The Orange leaned heavily on their rushing attack in the second half, piling up 116 yards on the ground to drain the clock and secure the dominant win.

The Syracuse defense held Duke to just 64 yards in the second half, including zero rushing yards, while forcing three turnovers to complete the shutdown effort.

Following the victory, Syracuse secured commitments from three key recruits:
                                • #31 OVR DT James Weinstein
                                • #27 OVR DE Maurice Lokombo
                                • #398 OVR CB Jermaine Boutte

However, the Orange missed out on #24 OVR ATH Russ Reinbolt, who committed to the Florida Gators.

Syracuse remains at home next week for a marquee showdown against #19 Notre Dame (3-2), as the Orange look to continue their dominant march toward a potential national championship run.
