Muncie, IN – Two programs heading in opposite directions will clash in Week 2 as the Ball State Cardinals host the Liberty Flames at Scheumann Stadium. The Cardinals are riding high after their program-defining 45-33 victory over #9 Indiana, while Liberty is reeling from an upset loss to Division II Grand Valley State, 34-31.

The Cardinals' season opener showcased their potential to compete with the nation’s best. Quarterback Kadin Semonza picked apart Indiana’s defense, throwing for 370 yards and five touchdowns, while dynamic receivers Philip Onwualu and Nyck Harbor accounted for 314 yards and five scores combined.

Defensively, Ball State showed grit, limiting Indiana to just 13 points through three quarters before conceding late. Despite the late-game lapses, Coach Nash Savage remains optimistic. "We’ll clean it up, but I’m proud of how the guys executed when it mattered," he said after the win.

The Flames, without former starting quarterback Kaidon Salter, turned to Ryan Burger against Grand Valley State. While Burger threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns, his 58% completion rate and inconsistent decision-making left Liberty vulnerable. Coupled with a defense that allowed a lower-division team to post 34 points, Liberty faces significant questions on both sides of the ball heading into this matchup. For Ball State, this game is an opportunity to solidify their strong start and build momentum ahead of tougher matchups. For Liberty, it’s a chance to rebound from a humiliating loss and prove they can compete against FBS competition without Salter at quarterback.

LEFT - Nyck Harbor put on a clinic highlighting how to beat press coverage with all four touchdowns coming in the 2nd quarter against the Liberty press.
CENTER - Ryan Burger carved up the Cardinals like a Thanksgiving turkey in the 1st half with 284 yards and 3 touchdowns on 21/29 passing. Ball State's 2nd half adjustments were enough to fluster the senior QB, who struggled to a 7/17 mark with a late pick six while absorbing 3 sacks in the 2nd half.
RIGHT - Christian Davis got the start over transfer Aidan Laughery after the latter was inefficient and fumbled in the win against Indiana. Davis delivered with a spectacular performance, likely cementing his spot as HB1.

Muncie, IN – A week after their program-defining victory over Indiana, the Ball State Cardinals delivered another statement, dismantling the Liberty Flames 73-27 in a lopsided affair that showcased their offensive firepower and defensive dominance.

Ball State struck first with a 39-yard touchdown reception by Philip Onwualu from Kadin Semonza, capping an efficient opening drive. Liberty responded with a 39-yard field goal from Rodney Flanagan, keeping the game competitive at 7-3 after one quarter.

The second quarter turned into an offensive showcase as both teams combined for 55 points. Liberty briefly took the lead behind a 37-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Burger to Bo Burkow and a 49-yard field goal by Flanagan.

However, Ball State's Kadin Semonza and Nyck Harbor took control of the game. The pair connected on three explosive touchdowns of 74, 68, and 67 yards, as the Cardinals capitalized on Liberty's mistakes, including two critical turnovers.

Despite a 9-yard touchdown pass from Burger to Connie Hewitt II and a 38-yard strike to David Okereke, Liberty's defense couldn’t contain the Cardinals’ relentless attack. A late interception by Ball State led to a 33-yard field goal by Jackson Courville, giving Ball State a 38-27 halftime lead.

After an explosive first half, Ball State's defense tightened up while their offense continued to roll. Kadin Semonza extended the lead with a 5-yard rushing touchdown early in the third quarter, followed by a 26-yard touchdown pass to Christian Davis.

Liberty, which gained 274 yards of offense in the first half, was stymied in the second, managing just 72 total yards and committing another critical turnover. Burger, after a strong first half, struggled with pressure and accuracy, finishing the game 28-of-46 for 345 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Ball State. Nick Presley added a 2-yard rushing touchdown, Willizhuan Yates returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown, and Christian Davis capped the scoring with a 5-yard run, securing the 73-27 blowout.

"We executed on both sides of the ball today," said Ball State Head Coach Nash Savage. "Kadin (Semonza) was phenomenal, and our defense stepped up big after halftime. This was a team win, and it sets the tone for what we can achieve this season."

With their record now 2-0, Ball State prepares to open Mid-American Conference play next week when the winless Western Michigan Broncos head into Scheumann Stadium.

I will be completely shocked if Semonza doesn't win the Heisman this year.

Don't know how much you know about him IRL, but there is a great article about him www.ballstatedailey.com.

Muncie, IN – The Western Michigan Broncos might be winless, but their 0-2 record doesn't tell the full story of their capabilities. The Broncos came heartbreakingly close to toppling in-state powerhouse Michigan, falling 36-34 in double overtime after a failed two-point conversion. A slow start against Tulsa last week put them in a 13-3 halftime hole, and despite a furious 25-point second-half rally, the Broncos fell short in a 34-28 loss.

Western Michigan’s offense, led by quarterback JD Davis, is the driving force behind their competitiveness. Davis, who torched Ball State for 444 yards last season in a shootout loss, has already demonstrated his ability to elevate the Broncos in big moments. With an explosive offense facing a Ball State defense still finding its rhythm, fans could be in for another fireworks display.

Ball State’s defense, however, showed signs of progress in last week’s dominant 73-27 win over Liberty. After allowing nearly 300 passing yards in the first half, the Cardinals made significant adjustments, pitching a second-half shutout while racking up a total of five sacks and three interceptions. Head Coach Nash Savage credited the improvement to better communication and a more cohesive effort from their revamped unit.

The Cardinals’ offense, spearheaded by quarterback Kadin Semonza and his dynamic playmakers Nyck Harbor and Philip Onwualu, has looked unstoppable in their first two games, averaging over 50 points per contest. With Western Michigan’s defense struggling to contain opponents, Ball State may have another opportunity to light up the scoreboard.

This game is shaping up to be an offensive showcase between two potent attacks and defenses looking for answers. While Ball State has the edge in momentum and home-field advantage, Western Michigan’s near-upset of Michigan proves they’re capable of rising to the occasion.

Kickoff is set for Saturday at Scheumann Stadium, where the Cardinals will aim to remain undefeated and justify their 21st overall ranking, while the Broncos hope to secure their first win of the season.

I simmed ahead after the CCG to see if I fired my DC if anyone better would be available, just for the additional abilities more than anything although it would be realistic with how inconsistent we were defensively, and he actually won the Heisman in that one. When I advanced with the intention of keeping it Lagway won, but Semonza still took home the other awards (best player etc), I've never seen a non Heisman winner win those in my dynasty so that was cool.

And I'll have to check out the article, I've been getting versed in Ball State football history lately lol want to make sure anything we do that is significant gets documented

LEFT - Kennet Merrieweather with his 2nd consecutive multi sack game, making a different up front early for the Cardinals defense.
CENTER - Jaden Nixon was the lone bright spot for the Broncos and one has to wonder if the game would have gone differently if he had gotten a single touch in the dreadful 1st quarter.
RIGHT - Philip Onwualu putting two Broncos in the spin cycle on his 61 yard catch and run touchdown.

Muncie, IN – The Ball State Cardinals (3-0) delivered a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, steamrolling the Western Michigan Broncos (0-3) in a decisive 68-17 victory. With relentless pressure from the defense and an offense firing on all cylinders, the Cardinals left no doubt about their prowess as they secured their third consecutive win of the season.

The Cardinals wasted no time asserting their dominance, racing to a commanding 23-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Running back Christian Davis opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown plunge. The defense quickly followed suit with a strip sack in the end zone by Ethan Evers, recovered by Jaiden Cameron for a touchdown. Safety Tawfiq Byard added to the defensive fireworks, forcing a safety with a sack, and Kadin Semonza connected with Nyck Harbor for a 35-yard touchdown to cap off the quarter.

Western Michigan struggled to find their footing, finishing the first quarter with -19 total yards, as the Ball State defense tallied four sacks and smothered the Broncos' passing attack.

The Broncos managed to get on the board early in the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Jaden Nixon, but Ball State’s offense responded with more fireworks. Semonza and Harbor connected on two long touchdowns, an 80-yard bomb and a 70-yard strike, showcasing their dynamic chemistry and extending the Cardinals’ lead to 37-7 at halftime.

Ball State’s defense continued to dominate in the third quarter. Tawfiq Byard picked off Western Michigan quarterback JD Davis and returned it 11 yards for a touchdown to open the 2nd half. Philip Onwualu then joined the scoring frenzy, weaving his way for a 64-yard touchdown from Semonza to push the lead even further. Western Michigan managed a lone field goal in the quarter, but it was far from enough to stem the tide.

The fourth quarter saw more of the same, with Onwualu adding a 12-yard touchdown reception, and Christian Davis scoring his second rushing touchdown of the game. Western Michigan added a late 12-yard touchdown pass from JD Davis to Emmett Stepnoski, but it was little more than a consolation score.

Ball State’s defense was the story of the game, holding Western Michigan to -19 total yards in the first quarter and just 185 passing yards for the game. The Broncos failed to establish a consistent running game, finishing with a net total of 61 rushing yards after sacks and negative plays were accounted for.

With this win, the Cardinals continue their strong start and build momentum as they prepare for a major test next week against the #5 NC State Wolfpack. The matchup will provide Ball State with another opportunity to prove they belong in the national conversation. Following their statement victory over Indiana earlier in the season and a dominant performance against Western Michigan, a competitive showing—or even an upset—against another top-10 opponent could further solidify the Cardinals as a legitimate force in college football this season.

For Western Michigan, the loss underscores the need for improvement on both sides of the ball as they seek to rebound from their 0-3 start.

                Game Notes
Muncie, IN – As the Ball State Cardinals prepare for one of the most significant matchups in program history, they carry the momentum of a dominant start to the season. After a statement win over then-#9 Indiana in Week 1, the Cardinals have steamrolled Liberty and Western Michigan by a combined score of 141-44, showcasing their offensive firepower and a steadily improving defense.

Despite the spotlight on their clash with the #5 NC State Wolfpack, head coach Nash Savage is determined to keep his team grounded and focused.

“Fact is, it’s just game four out of twelve—and a non-conference game at that,” Coach Savage stated during Friday’s press conference. “If we win, great, it’ll boost our CFP resume. But that means nothing if we don’t take care of business in the MAC as a non-Power 5 team. They’re not hanging a banner for this one, so I’ve told the guys to stay loose. It’s just another Saturday in Muncie for us.”

While Ball State may downplay the pressure, the stakes are far higher for NC State. The Wolfpack began the season with a commanding victory over Florida, intercepting reigning Heisman winner DJ Lagway twice in the process. However, the team has since stumbled, dropping a road game to Syracuse and barely escaping Vanderbilt with a win. Another early loss could prematurely deflate any playoff hopes for the Wolfpack, regardless of how the season shakes out.

NC State quarterback Alonza Barnett III, an early Heisman frontrunner after a seven-touchdown performance against Florida, has cooled off in recent weeks. Over the past two games, Barnett has managed just four touchdowns against two interceptions, completing a little over 60% of his passes.

For Ball State, this matchup represents the ultimate test of their mettle. The Cardinals' defense, which has improved steadily after a shaky second half against Indiana, will face its toughest challenge yet in the Wolfpack’s high-powered offense. Meanwhile, Ball State’s explosive attack, led by Kadin Semonza and star receivers Nyck Harbor and Philip Onwualu, will look to capitalize on any cracks in the NC State defense.

With the eyes of the nation on Muncie, this game offers Ball State a chance to prove they belong in the national conversation. A win over a top-five opponent would be a historic milestone, but as Coach Savage emphasized, it’s just one step in a much larger journey.

CENTER - Jackson Vick was burnt by Nyck Harbor earlier in the 4th, but got revenge with this pick six late in the 4th quarter.
RIGHT - Kadin Semonza crowning himself in front of a sellout crowd after giving his Cardinals a 21-13 lead in the 3rd.

Muncie, IN – In a game filled with momentum swings and dramatic plays, the #21 Ball State Cardinals secured their place in the national conversation with a thrilling 42-33 victory over #5 NC State. It was a statement win for the Cardinals, who improved to 4-0 and handed the Wolfpack their second loss of the season.

The Wolfpack came out strong, displaying why they entered the game as the nation's fifth-ranked team. Quarterback Alonza Barnett III was nearly perfect in the first half, completing 16 of 18 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.

Kanoah Vinesett opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter, and after a Ball State touchdown on a 4-yard run by Christian Davis, NC State responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Barnett to Obi Rollins-Dyson. A late turnover on downs by Ball State set up another Vinesett field goal, giving the Wolfpack a 13-7 halftime lead.

The Cardinals struggled offensively in the opening half, managing only 100 total yards to NC State's 200.

Ball State's second half was a complete turnaround. Kadin Semonza, who had a quiet first half, ignited the offense with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Philip Onwualu and a 3-yard touchdown run to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game at 21-13.

On defense, transfer DE Kenneth Merreweather came up with two crucial sacks, while CB Kaleb Purdy showcased his playmaking ability, including a 47-yard pick-six to extend the Ball State lead to 28-13 early in the fourth quarter.

NC State refused to go down quietly. Jayden Scott’s 18-yard touchdown run pulled the Wolfpack within eight. Semonza then connected with Nyck Harbor on a 35-yard strike, only for NC State to answer with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Barnett to Christian Zachary.

With the game hanging in the balance, Jackson Vick intercepted a deep Semonza pass and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown. However, the Wolfpack’s two-point conversion attempt was stopped in the backfield by Merreweather, leaving Ball State ahead 35-33.

The Cardinals didn’t flinch. On the very next drive, facing a similar situation, Semonza went back to Harbor for a 55-yard touchdown to seal the game.

NC State’s final drive ended with Kaleb Purdy’s second interception, this time in the end zone, preserving the win for Ball State.

Ball State’s monumental win over a top-5 opponent propels them into serious playoff consideration as they prepare to resume conference play. The defense, powered by transfer stars Merrieweather and Purdy, will look to build on their second-half dominance.

Meanwhile, NC State faces mounting pressure as they return to Raleigh for a crucial ACC matchup, hoping to salvage their playoff hopes.

For the Cardinals, the dream season rolls on with the nation taking notice.

                    Game Notes
Toledo, OH – Riding high after a thrilling 42-33 upset over then-#5 NC State, the #12 Ball State Cardinals enter their matchup against the Toledo Rockets with momentum and national attention. However, no team is more motivated to halt the Cardinals’ ascent than Toledo, who suffered two tough losses to Ball State last season despite a heroic 1,000 passing yards combined from now-graduated quarterback Tucker Gleason.

This season, the Rockets have reloaded and redefined their identity. Senior quarterback John Alan Richter has been sensational, seamlessly stepping into the role and leading an offense that remains one of the most explosive in the MAC. But the real difference-maker for Toledo has been on the defensive side of the ball.

Under first-year head coach Jason Genus, the Rockets have adopted a disciplined, bend-don’t-break defensive philosophy. This approach has paid dividends, with Toledo’s defense ranking in the top 25 nationally in points allowed per game.

Yet Genus knows the challenge ahead against Ball State’s Heisman contender, quarterback Kadin Semonza, who vaulted to second in the Heisman rankings after totaling four touchdowns in last week’s victory over NC State. Semonza’s dynamic connection with wide receiver Nyck Harbor, who turned heads with two long touchdown catches against the Wolfpack, poses a unique challenge for any defense.

“They play with such speed that they can easily get by you in a moment’s notice, just look at last week,” said Genus, referencing Harbor’s game-changing plays despite Ball State giving up a pick-six in the same quarter.

The Cardinals’ offense, complemented by a steadily improving defense, has proven lethal. However, Toledo’s history of closely contested battles with Ball State adds intrigue to this matchup. For the Rockets to break through and snap their two-game losing streak to the Cardinals, they’ll need their defense to make a statement.

As two of the MAC’s premier programs clash, all eyes will be on whether Toledo can rise to the occasion or if Ball State continues its meteoric rise in the college football landscape

LEFT - Toledo's passing game was electric in the 1st quarter highlighted by Erich Holley III taking this screen pass to the house with the help of his blockers.
CENTER - Nyck Harbor had the launch codes on his 84 yard catch and run to open the scoring for Ball State.
RIGHT - Kadin Semonza put the ball on the deck trailing 24-21 as it appeared the Rockets were going to take at least a two score lead, but the Cardinals defense stood firm and set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Toledo, OH — The #12 Ball State Cardinals delivered another commanding performance, defeating the previously unbeaten Toledo Rockets 70-31. Heisman frontrunner Kadin Semonza led the way with a perfect passing day and six total touchdowns as the Cardinals cemented their status as one of the nation's most explosive teams.

The game began with an electrifying first quarter, as both teams exchanged big plays and showcased their offensive firepower. Toledo struck first with a 28-yard field goal by Darren Norris, but Ball State responded immediately when Semonza connected with Nyck Harbor for an 84-yard touchdown. Toledo’s quarterback, John Alan Richter, countered with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Eric Holley III, but Semonza’s 1-yard rushing touchdown and an 83-yard scoring strike to Philip Onwualu gave Ball State a 21-17 lead after one quarter.

The opening period featured over 500 yards of combined offense, with Semonza completing all three of his passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns. Richter was equally sharp, throwing for 202 yards and two scores.

In the second quarter, Toledo briefly regained the lead at 24-21 after Connor Walendzak’s 1-yard touchdown run, but could not capitalize on a rare Semonza fumble. Ball State’s defense clamped down, holding Toledo to just 78 total yards in the quarter. Semonza bounced back with a 37-yard touchdown to Onwualu and a 13-yard strike to Harbor, giving the Cardinals a 35-24 halftime lead. While Toledo’s offense stalled, Ball State’s balance and efficiency kept them in control.

The third quarter belonged entirely to Ball State. Christian Davis powered the Cardinals with two rushing touchdowns, from 12 and 23 yards, as Ball State outscored Toledo 21-0 in the period. The defense continued to stifle the Rockets, forcing three punts and preventing any scoring opportunities. By the end of the quarter, the Cardinals had taken a commanding 56-24 lead.

Ball State showed no signs of letting up in the fourth quarter. Semonza added another rushing touchdown, and Davis capped his career day with two more scores, finishing with four rushing touchdowns in the game. Toledo managed a late 2-yard touchdown by Walendzak, but it was far too late to change the outcome. Ball State’s offense finished the day with an astonishing 735 total yards, including 471 passing and 264 rushing, while Toledo tallied 481 yards but struggled to keep pace.

Semonza was flawless, completing all 15 of his passes for 471 yards and four touchdowns while adding 68 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. Davis carried the load in the run game with 169 yards and four touchdowns, while Harbor and Onwualu combined for over 400 receiving yards and four scores. Toledo’s Richter had a strong start but faltered in the second half, finishing with 377 passing yards and two touchdowns.

This victory reinforces Ball State’s status as a top-tier team, with its dynamic offense and improving defense making them a force to be reckoned with. The Cardinals (5-0) will look to continue their dominant run when they host conference rival Buffalo next week.

                          Game Notes
Muncie, IN. - The Buffalo Bulls come into their matchup with #11 Ball State as the only other MAC program without an in-conference loss, hoping they can play giant killer to the Ball State offensive juggernaut.

Buffalo dropped a Week 1 contests to #5 Penn State 38-17 behind FR(RS) QB Sean ****s 3 INTs. The freshman has rebounded considerably since the humbling 1st start, tossing 16 touchdowns to just 2 touchdowns since the opening performance.

Buffalo has the offense to make the Cardinals defense sweat -ranked 10th nationally- something Toledo tried to do just a week ago before running out of steam. If the Bulls can keep pace with the Cardinals explosive offense, they have a shot at forcing JR(RS) Kadin Semonza into some mistakes that will be crucial for a Bulls victory.

I didn't even notice that Semonza was perfect for the day until the end of the game lol. We only threw the ball 5 times in the 2nd half. Buffalo is going to be interesting. Their front seven isn't very good, but their corners are all solid and have speed. When our passing game has struggled its been against quicker defenses that can keep up with our spread tempo

I am planning on adjusting the sliders back up to Heisman after Buffalo.

LEFT - Nyck Harbor had himself another "Turkey Day Moss" with 3 catches for 3 touchdowns.
CENTER - Braydon Lee got revenge for being burnt twice in the 1st half, but the Bulls would throw a pick six in response before Lee was toasted for a 3rd time in the 4th.
RIGHT - Three of the Cardinals offseason transfers logged sacks with safety Tawfiq Byard celebrating right in ****s grill on the 1st of his two.

Muncie, IN. - Ball State (5-0) remained undefeated with a decisive 48-24 victory over Buffalo (4-1) at home, breaking open a close game with a dominant fourth quarter. The Cardinals leaned on explosive plays from wide receiver Nyck Harbor and a game-changing defensive touchdown to secure the win.

The first half saw both teams trading blows in an evenly matched contest. Ball State opened the scoring with Christian Davis’ 1-yard touchdown run, but Buffalo responded with a 43-yard field goal by Upton Bellenfant.

The second quarter became a showcase for Ball State quarterback Kadin Semonza and his connection with Harbor. Semonza hit Harbor for two long touchdowns, including an electrifying 83-yard strike and a 62-yard score. Buffalo quarterback Sean ****s kept his team in the game with short touchdown passes to Nik McMillan and Chance Morrow, but Ball State added a 35-yard field goal from Jackson Courville to head into halftime up 24-17.

At halftime, Ball State led in total offense with 289 yards, powered by Semonza's flawless 8-for-8 passing for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Buffalo kept pace with 215 yards, thanks to a balanced attack and ****s’ efficient 11-for-13 passing for 101 yards and two scores.

Neither team could find their rhythm in the third quarter, which was marred by turnovers. Semonza fumbled early in the quarter, his second in two games, and later threw an interception. Buffalo had a chance to take the lead but missed a field goal during the scoreless period.

The game turned dramatically in the fourth quarter, sparked by Ball State’s defense. With Buffalo trailing just 24-17, Dalton Townsel intercepted ****s and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown, igniting a 24-0 run for the Cardinals.

Semonza and Harbor connected for their third touchdown of the game, a 48-yard bomb that gave Harbor a jaw-dropping stat line of three receptions for 193 yards and three scores. Ball State added a 17-yard touchdown run by Nick Presley and a short field goal by Courville, both set up by consecutive turnover on downs by the Buffalo offense.

Buffalo managed a late consolation touchdown on a 66-yard pass from ****s to Victor Snow, but the damage had been done.

****s finished the game 20-for-30 for 217 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception while being sacked five times. Semonza was near-perfect, completing 15 of 17 passes for 318 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

Harbor’s 193 receiving yards and three touchdowns on just three catches highlighted Ball State's offensive firepower, while Townsel’s pick-six proved to be the game’s turning point.

Ball State heads into its bye week at 6-0 and will resume MAC play on the road against Bowling Green. Buffalo falls to 4-2 and will look to rebound in their next matchup as they aim to stay competitive in the conference race.
