Re: The Career of Chris Thomas

    3 days before the season...

Today, a move was made that I had been anticipating since I was drafted. I was assigned to the team's AHL affiliate - the Binghampton Senators. My first trip down to New York. I arrived in Binghamton around 3:15 in the morning, and was awaken at 7:45 by Binghamton General Manager Tim Murray. I groggily answered "Hello?" Tim then Replied "Good morning Chris. This is Tim Murray, GM of the Binghamton Senators". I was wide awake by then. Tim then continued "Could you be at the rink for 1:30 to meet head coach Curtis Hunt and I? We would like to discuss the start of the season with you." I said I'd be there, and Tim hung up. I was expecting to start on the first defensive pairing.

    That afternoon...

I arrived at the rink a couple minutes early, and walked to the dressing room, where I saw two older gentlemen. They heard me walk in and came over and said "You must be Chris Thomas". I replied "Yes, thats me. Who are you?" The older one laughed and replied "Chris I'm Tim Murray, and this is Curtis Hunt". I laughed off my embarassment. Mr. Murray then told me to follow him over to his office. I did. He sat in the rolling chair behind his desk, while giving Curtis and I uncomfortable metal seats. Tim then started by pulling out a big red binder. He said "In this Binder is my expectations of all of our players this season." He then flipped to my name, and showed me the page. The first thing I saw was 14 assists. I said that was reasonable. I then saw get 42 points. I said that they sure think I'm a high scoring defenseman. 192 shots. Should be easy enough if I get some shots through. Apparently it would be a stretch goal for me to have a +10 or better. I said I'd try my best to accomplish these goals. Mr. Murray then told us to leave, and when we outside Curtis Hunt said that I would be on the 3rd defensive pairing with Joe Rullier.

      First game of the season...

Well, my first professional game was close to home - we were facing the Toronto Marlies. We ended up losing 2-1. A weak penalty kill was the killer tonight. Both of TO's goals came with the man advantage. I was held off the scoresheet, but on the first goal I was pinching in and saw the play developing and screened Olaf Kolzig. I made two trips to the penalty box. One was for being agressive on my poke check, and tripping the guy, and then I played hard behind our net, and got called for boarding. The Marlies bench and coaches weren't to happy, as I skated by I heard "That was a headshot, kick him out" "That was dirty, give a major". I smiled. Coach Hunt wasn't to happy with our PK obviously. But he didn't explode at us like I was expecting he just simply said "If you guys wanna win, we need strong special teams, both our penalty kill and powerplay sucked tonight."

        Game 2...

Tonight we played another road game. This time we were back in New York to face the Rochester Americans. I was a big factor in our 5-2 win. I scored my first career goal, and then 2 more to score my first hat trick. I was mobbed by my teammates. I scored on the powerplay by pinching in, and getting the one timer, the shorthanded was when I broke in on an odd man rush, and again took the one timer, and the hat trick goal was a pass out the corner that I blasted home from the point. Our PK was hot tonight, not allowing a powerplay goal. I had our lone powerplay marker. I was named first star. While it was on the road, and I was booed instead of cheered it still is special to score a hat trick and get a first star. Hopefully I can continue to play at a high level, and the team keeps shooting the way we have been.
