The future of the NHL (EHM 2007)

On August 30th, 2007, due to the economic times and the NHL's failure at attracting fans to the southern markets, Gary Bettman came up with an idea to have a "fantasy draft" where each team would re-pick their teams with NHL players and prospects. He decided that to get media attention and so each team would get a chance to draft a superstar. Meaning that people would notice and want to watch hockey.

As well the Florida Panthers fired their GM and hired an unknown person named Ryan Williams. (I will be playing as them)

The first round of the Draft went like this:

    Goalies

    1)Cam Ward
    Team:Florida
    Height:6'1 Weight:189lbs
    Age:22
    Hometown:Sherwood Park, AB, CAN

Cam is a very dominant young goaltender he led Carolina to a Stanley Cup last season. He should be our goaltender for a long time.

    2)John Grahame
    Team:Florida
    Height:6'2 Weight:218
    Age:30
    Hometownenver,CO,USA

John is a very reliable back-up goaltender. He is not really suited for the lead role though, so if Cam were to be injured we better hope he is hot.

    3)David Shantz
    Team:Florida (ECHL)
    Height:6'1 Weight:209
    Age:20
    Hometown:Hamilton, ONT,CAN

The former 2nd round draft pick in 2004 will be playing mostly in the AHL unless injures occur. He was a decent goalie in the OHL, and is still quite young.

    4)Mike Rouleau
    Team:Bowling Green (NCAA)
    Height:6'1" Weight:175lbs
    Age:20
    Hometown:Westboro, MA, USA

The former 7th round pick of the Flames will probably never see NHL action, as quite frankly he does not have the skill or potential. He may make a good AHL or ECHL goalie though.

    Pier-Olivier Pelletier
    Team: Drummondville (QMJHL)
    Height:6'2" Weight:183lbs
    Age:19
    Hometown:St. Louis, SK, CAN

A former 2nd round pick of the Flyers in 2005. He does not seem to have much potential for the NHL.

Re: The future of the NHL (EHM 2007)

      Defensemen

      1)Rob Blake
      Team:Florida
      Height:6'4" Weight:224lbs
      Age:36
      Hometown:Simcoe, ONT, CAN

Rob Blake will be our key defensemen on a very weak group of defensemen. He is very physical and possesses a wicked shot. Thought he is 36 we would love to get a couple more years out of him.

      2)Brett Clark
      Team:Florida
      Height:6'1" Weight:195lbs
      Age:29
      Hometown:Wapella, SK, CAN

The talent kind of drops off after Rob Blake. Though is a pretty decent defensemen we definitely need better ones. He finally made the NHL for full-time duty last year.

      3)Francis Bouillon
      Team:Florida
      Height:5'8" Weight:191
      Age:30
      Hometown:New York, NY, USA

A very undersized defensemen, but very determined. But he is still very good. Not really what I want for a top 4 defensemen though. He is better suited for third pairing.

      4)Jon Klemm

      Team:Florida
      Height:6'2" Weight:198lbs
      Age:36
      Hometown:Cranbrook, BC, CAN

At 36 he is near the end of his career. And his production is falling rapidly. Hopefully he won't be a liability.

      5)Bryce Salvador
      Team:Florida
      Height:6'2" Weight:213lbs
      Age:30
      Hometown:Brandon, MB, CAN

Bryce is suited for a defensive or shut-down role on the team. He is not very offensively talented.

      6)Dan McGillis

      Team:Florida
      Height:6'2" Weight:229lbs
      Age:34
      Hometown:Hawkesbury, ON, CAN

If my defense had any depth at all, he would not be playing on my team. But since I don't he will be playing limited minutes, as quite frankly he should be playing in the AHL.

      7)Martin Tuma
      Team:Florida (ECHL)
      Height:6'4" Weight:209
      Age:20
      Hometown:Most, CZE

Martin will be playing in the AHL mostly this season. He is our former 5th round draft pick in 2003. I imagine he should play in the AHL for a while.

      8)Ben Shutron
      Team:Kingston (OHL)
      Height:6'1" Weight:183
      Age:18
      Hometown:Orleans, ONT, CAN

Ben is our top defensive prospect. He was a 4th round draft pick last year by Chicago. I will keep him in the OHL until he is 20.

      9)Raymond Macias

      Team:Kamloops (WHL)
      Height:6'1" Weight:196lbs
      Age:19
      Hometown:Long Beach,CA,USA

Raymond is a former 4th round pick of Colorado. He will probably play in the AHL next season.

      10)Scott Jackson

      Team:Seattle (WHL)
      Height:6'4" Weight:205
      Age:19
      Hometown:Salmon Arm,BC,CAN

A former 2nd round pick of the Blues. When he is finished in the WHL in two years, he will play in the AHL.

      11)Joey Gaustad

      Team:Wisconsin (NCAA)
      Height:6'6" Weight:222lbs
      Age:18
      Hometown:Wayne,NJ,USA

Joey is a former 2nd round pick of the Avalanche. I will be keeping him in college for the next three years.

      12)Brad Bradley

      Team:Maine (NCAA)
      Height:6'7" Weight:209lbs
      Age:18
      Hometown:Quebec City,QC,CAN

At 6'7" he is very tall. He is a former 2nd round pick of the Blackhawks. He will be staying in college.

Re: The future of the NHL (EHM 2007)

        Left Wings

        1)Patrik Elias
        Team:Florida
        Height:6'1" Weight:194lbs
        Age:30
        Hometown:Trebic, CZE

Patrik will be our first line center. He is a former all-star so he is very talented. We will be looking for him to score many of our goals.

        2)Steve Sullivan
        Team:Florida
        Height:5'9" Weight:154
        Age:32
        Hometown:Timmins,ON,CAN

Steve can also play right wing. He is small but very fast. But also very injury prone. I will be hoping he stays healthy as he will score lots of our goals.

        3)Marco Sturm
        Team:Florida
        Height:6'0" Weight:194lbs
        Age:27
        Hometowningolfing,GER

Marco can also play center. He will be looked on to score us some goals.

        4)Kirk Maltby
        Team:Florida
        Height:6'0" WEIGHT:189lbs
        Age:33
        Hometown:Guelph,ONT,CAN

Kirk is a defensive specialist. I won't be expecting to many goals from him as he is suited for a bottom four position.

        5)Stephane Veilleux
        Team:Florida
        Height:6'1 Weight:185lbs
        Age:24
        Hometown:Beauceville,QC,CAN

Stephane will be playing in both the NHL and the AHL this season as he will be fighting for a chance to play in the NHL this season. He is still young at only 24.

        6)Brad Larson

        Team:Florida
        Height:6'0" Weight:189lbs
        Age:29
        Hometown:Nakusp,BC,CAN

Brad will be playing in the AHL mostly this season. As left wing has alot of depth.

        7)Dick Axelsson

        Teamjurgardon (SEL)
        Height:6'2" Weight:176lbs
        Age:19
        Hometown:Stolkholm,SWE

Dick should be not much of a force in the SEL, I will try to bring him to the AHL in two years.

        8)Constantin Braun
        Team:Berlin Juniors (Ger Jr)
        Height:6'3" Weight:198lbs
        Age:18
        Hometown:Lampertheim, GER

A former 6th round draft pick of the Kings. He is the captain of the German U-20 team.

Re: The future of the NHL (EHM 2007)

          Centers

          1)John Madden
          Team:Florida
          Height:5'11" Weight:189lbs
          Age:31
          Hometown:Barrie,ONT,CAN

John is not my ideal first line center, but he will have to do. He may do good in a scoring environment though, unlike NJ.

          2)Jason Weimer
          Team:Florida
          Height:6'1" Weight:222lbs
          Age:30
          Hometown:Kimberley,BC,CAN

Jason is also not my ideal 2nd line center as he is an enforcer.

          3)Marcel Goc
          Team:Florida
          Height:6'1' Wight:189lbs
          Age:23
          Hometown:Calw,GER

Marcel will probably be the 2nd line center. He seems pretty good for a 23 year old.

          4)Denis Arkhipov
          Team:Florida
          Height:6'3" Weight:213
          Age:27
          Hometown:Kazan,RUS

He is returning to the NHL after two years in Russia. He will be fighting for a spot in training camp.

          5)Scott Nichol
          Team:Florida
          Height:5'8" Weight:171lbs
          Age:31
          Hometown:Edmonton,AB,CAN

Scott is a grinding center. He will be fighting for a spot on the team, as we have a lot of mediocre center.

          6)John Pohl
          Team:Florida
          Height:6'0" Weight:189;bs
          Age:27
          Hometown:Rochester,MN,USA

John will be playing in the AHL if he does not win a spot on the team.

          7)Kyle Brodziak
          Team:Florida
          Height:6'2" Weight:191lbs
          Age:22
          Hometown:St. Paul,AB,CAN

At 22 it is probably best for him to play in the AHL, nevertheless he will be fighting for a spot on the big club.

          8)Petteri Nokelainen
          Team:Florida
          Height:6'0 Weight:176lbs
          Age:20
          Hometown:Imatra,FIN

He will be playing in the AHL this season as he is not ready for the NHL, but hopefully he will be playing for us one day.

          9)Brad Cotton

          Team:Mississauga
          Height:6'0" Weight:189lbs
          Age:19
          Hometown:Kahnawake,QC,CAN

The former 4th round pick of the Sens. Brad will be playing in the OHL for the next two seasons.

          10)Denis Stasyuk
          Team:Novokuznetsk (RUS)
          Height:6'3 Weight:180
          Age:20
          Hometown:Angarsk,RUS

Our former 6th round pick in 2003. He will be playing in Russia, I'm not sure he wants to come to North America.

Re: The future of the NHL (EHM 2007)

            Right Wings

            1)Marek Svatos

            Team:Florida
            Height:5'9" Weight:169lbs
            Age:24
            Hometown:Kosice,SVK

Marek is a great young player. He came from nowhere last year and scored 30 goals in his rookie season.

            2)Matt Cooke
            Team:Florida
            Height:5'11" Weight:202lbs
            Age:27
            Hometown:Belleville,ONT,CAN

Matt is a shut-down kind of player. He is more suited for a bottom four role.

            3)Georges Laraque

            Team:Florida
            Height:6'3" Weight:238lbs
            Age:29
            Hometown:Montreal,QC,CAN

Georges is an enforcer. He should be our main enforcer.

            4)Andrei Kostitsyn
            Team:Florida
            Height:6'0" Weight:198lbs
            Age:21
            Hometown:Novopolotsk,BLR

Andrei is a good young player. He should be playing both bottom and top line minutes, or maybe AHL.

            5)Ryan Kesler
            Team:Florida
            Height:6'2' Weight:194lbs
            Age:21
            Hometown:Livonia,MI,USA

Ryan should be fighting for a spot with Kostitsyn. As he is just as good and has the same potential.

            6)Grant Marshall

            Team:Florida
            Height:6'1" Weight:198lbs
            Age:33
            Hometown:Mississauga,ONT,CAN

Grant will be the odd one out and probably play in the AHL. He is a defensive specialist.

            7)B.J. Crombeen

            Team:Pori (FIN)
            Height:6'2' Weight:211lbs
            Age:20
            Hometown:Newmarket,ONT,CAN (Where I live)

B.J will be playing in Pori. I will try to get him to come back to Canada, as we need some players in the AHL.

I don't know, when I saw that I had to rub my eyes to see if it was the lighting or something.

Lol I agree. Too bad picks two and three weren't reversed.

Dats, Z, Hossa and then add Ovie....I don't even want to think about that, lol.

Still I guess Cindy is good but don't like him.

As long as we have a strong defensive base, I'm happy.
I have an idea (just an idea), maybe you should let OS'ers take over as other team's GM's (we could do the draft again, if you wanted to).
                        Go Panthers!
