Exciting to see Toronto in the Cup Finals. I had them in my NHL 19 Franchise in the Finals too.

Maple Leafs are Stanley Cup Champions

Toronto, Ont. - The waiting is over. For the first time since 1967, the Toronto Maple Leafs are Stanley Cup champions.

The Maple Leafs defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 on home ice last night to take home the cup in six games; the club’s 14th Stanley Cup.

“What a roller coaster of a season it’s been,” said Maple Leafs General Manager Nolan Reid. “To be able to life the cup is definitely a sign that we were meant to be here.”

On December 30, 2023, Toronto sat sixth in the Eastern Conference wild card spot with a 16-19-2 record with 34 points after a 5-2 home loss to the Seattle Kraken. They were also amidst a five-game losing streak and with just two wins in a 10-game span.

No time was wasted and after the game the Maple Leafs fired Head Coach P.K. Subban and the next day was replaced by Marion Gaborik.

The former NHL star turned things around in Toronto as posted a 27-16-3 record with the 45 remaining games left in the season.

“Marion turned our season around,” said Reid. “He brought in a system that everyone bought into and the results proved themselves on the ice.”

It’s beyond words to win the cup, said Gaborik. “I never did it as a player but to do it as a coach is just an awesome feeling. Everyone in the room believed in what we could do and we got it done.”

Prior the Stanley Cup celebration, the Conn Smythe (most valuable player during the playoffs) was awarded to Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews. Matthews had 12 goals and 33 points in 25 playoff games.

“It’s unbelievable and such an honour,” said Matthews. “I think anyone could have won this with the way we played during the playoffs.”

Right now, it’s time to enjoy the moment before getting back to work for the off-season, said Reid.

“This is our time, but in a week we have to shift our focus to the draft, resigning players and then free agency. We are going to be kept busy.”

The 2024 NHL Entry Draft takes place June 24, 2024 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Que. The Maple Leafs have four picks; a second-round pick and three seventh-round picks.
