Note before reading article: I had a setting “Former players as staff” set so that is why PK Subban was defaulted as the coach and not Sheldon Keefe, and only former players are listed as coaches. Keeps this interesting though!

Leafs relieve Subban of head coaching duties
      Dec. 30, 2023

TORONTO, ONT - The Toronto Maple Leafs are putting 2023 behind them as they have relieved head coach P.K. Subban from his duties, the team announced during a press conference after tonight’s loss to the Seattle Kraken.

The move comes after the Leafs recent losing streak of five games, with only one win in their past nine games. It has also taken the Leafs out of a playoff position and even out of a wild card spot.

Toronto has been without forwards Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner for a bit of the season, along with defenceman John Klingberg missing sometime and starting goaltender Ilya Samsonov.

General Manager Nolan Reid said injuries are not an excuse for a lack-luster performance in December.

“We have enough talent and depth on this team and I feel like P.K. wasn’t able to work with what he had. Four wins in one month is just not acceptable,” said Reid.

Subban, who was hired by former GM Kyle Dubas in May, was in his first year of coaching behind an NHL bench. Reid thanked Subban for his short time in Toronto.

“We had a discussion after the game and we felt it was best we went in another direction. I wish him all the best.”

The Leafs will be holding a press conference tomorrow afternoon to announce a new head coach.

Marion Gaborik hired as new Leafs bench boss
        Dec. 31, 2023

TORONTO, ONT - The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired former NHL star, Marion Gaborik, as the team’s new head coach, the team announced in a press conference this afternoon.

Gaborik, an 18-year NHL veteran, becomes the Maple Leafs’ 42nd head coach in franchise history.

The news comes less than 24 hours after Toronto fired P.K. Subban.

“This a fresh start,” said Maple Leafs General Manager Nolan Reid. “It might be a little too late, but I like to look at it as a clean slate. We can start to hold everyone accountable, on and off the ice.”

Gaborik will make his debut behind the Leafs’ bench on Jan. 2, 2024 when they host rival Ottawa Senators.

Gaborik said he is excited for the opportunity.

“It’s always an honour to get an NHL coaching job,” said Gaborik. “I want to be the reason for change and make this teams competitive again.”

Toronto currently sits sixth in the Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference with a 16-19-2 record for 36 points.

            Jan. 2, 2024

Toronto, Ont. - John Tavares scored twice, including the game winner as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-3 tonight.

The win snaps a five-game losing streak for Toronto and marks the first win for Head Coach Marion Gaborik behind the Leafs bench.

"It feels great," said Gaborik. "But it's only one game and we have a hell of a lot of work to do."

The Leafs opened the scoring at 11:28 of the first period with a goal from Matthew Knies. Timothy Liljegren and David Kampft drew assists. Calle Jarnkrok increased the Leafs lead to 2-0 at 12:04. Mark Giordano and Knies picked up assists. The Senators cut the lead in half at 14:47 with a goal from Thomas Chabot. Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson drew assists.

In the second period, Tkachuk tied the game just 1:13 into the period with a power play goal. Chabot drew the lone assist. The Senators took their first lead of the game at 15:22 with a goal from Tim Stuzle. Jakub Chychrun and Chabot picked up assists.

In the third period, Tavares scored his first of the game at 07:12 with an unassisted power play tally. Tavares then gave the Leafs a 4-3 lead at 18:04 with another goal on the power play. William Nylander and Morgan Reilly drew assists.

"We wanted this win," said Leafs Captain Tavares. "Not just for Marion (Gaborik) but for everyone. We have a great group of guys and we needed to something to get our confidence back."

Ilya Samsonov picked up the win in the Leafs crease with 31 saves. Joonas Korpisalo made 29 saves in the loss for Ottawa.

              Leafs acquire Zucker from Coyotes

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired veteran forward Jason Zucker from the Arizona Coyotes, the team announced today in a press release.

Going to Arizona is 24-year-old minor-league forward Jay O'Brien.

Zucker had two goals and six points in 39 games with the Coyotes this season.

"Despite his numbers, Jason can come in a provide a leadership role with this club," said Leafs General Manager Nolan Reid. "I think he can help us get out of this slump. We aren't looking for him to rack up points, but lead by example on and off the ice and just do the little things."

The Maple Leafs are coming off a 4-3 win versus the Ottawa Senators that snapped a five-game losing streak. Zucker will join the Maple Leafs within the next 24 hours and is expected to make his debut on Jan. 5 on the road against the St. Louis Blues.

                  Maple Leafs acquire goaltender Francouz
                  Feb. 1, 2024
                  avalanche-goaltender-pavel-francouz-makes-a-glove-save.jpg

The Toronto Maple Leafs are busy at the trade front again, this time acquiring goaltender Pavel Francouz from the Colorado Avalanche, the team announced today.

Going to Colorado is goaltender Martin Jones.

Francouz posted a 6-2-1 record with a 2.21 goals-against-average and a 0.921 save-percentage with the Avalanche this season. Jones on the other hand, struggled with the Maple Leafs posting a 6-14-0 record with a 3.60 goals-against-average and 0.883 save-percentage.

Maple Leafs General Manager Nolan Reid said the trade had to be made.

"We needed a solution," said Reid. "Nothing personal against Martin, but the job wasn't getting done as a back-up goaltender. We wish him all the best in Colorado and hope he can find his game again. Maybe a change of scenery is what he needed."

The Maple Leafs have gotten off on the right foot in 2024, picking up nine wins in 15 games after their abysmal month of December where they managed four wins with several losing streaks. Reid said all the recent change has worked.

"We have a completely different team than what we had last month," said Reid. "Our confidence is back, and we are taking it each day and each game at a time."

Toronto is back in action Feb. 2 against the Ottawa Senators. Game time 7 p.m. EST.

Maple Leafs stay busy during trade deadline
                          March 1, 2024

Toronto, ONT - The Toronto Maple Leafs were one of the more active teams during the 2024 trade deadline today.

In four separate trades, the Maple Leafs acquired forwards Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson, and defencemen Matt Roy, Sean Durzi and minor-leaguer Kaedan Korczak.

Maple Leafs General Manager Nolan Reid said the team is a lot better today than it was yesterday.

“We’ve added more scoring and we improved our defence. These additions are the missing key to get us into the playoffs.”

Marchessault and Korczak were acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights with forward Zachary L’Heureux and defenceman Timothy Liljegren going to Vegas in return.

In 66 games this season, Marchessault has 33 goals for 51 points. Korczak, in 63 games with Henderson of the AHL, has one goal and 25 points. Reid confirmed Korczak will report to the Toronto Marlies. L’Heureux was a healthy scratch all season long and has yet to see action. Liljegren put up three goals and 14 points in 65 games with the Leafs this season.

Roy was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings. In return, the Leafs sent forward David Kampf, Dominik Bokk and Edmonton’s third-round pick in 2025 to L.A.

Roy had four goals and 24 points in 67 games with the Kings. Kampf put up three goals for 11 points in 65 games with the Maple Leafs. Bokk, scored four goals and seven points with the Marlies.

The Leafs acquired Stephenson from the Nashville Predators, who was acquired by the Predators moments prior from Vegas. In return, the Leafs sent forward Tyler Bertuzzi and AHLers Topi Niemela and Roni Hirvonen to the Predators.

Stephenson had 23 goal and 49 points in 66 games with Vegas this season. Bertuzzi had 19 goals and 29 points in 65 games with the Leafs.

Defenceman Durzi was acquired from the Arizona Coyotes in-exchange for defenceman Jake McCabe the Toronto’s third-round pick in 2026.

Durzi had eight goals and 24 points in 65 games this season with the Coyotes. McCabe had two goals and 14 points in 63 games with the Leafs.

The new look Maple Leafs host the Dallas Stars tomorrow night at 7 p.m. EST.
