Starting From Scratch: The Hartford Atlantics (NHL 2k8)

After 15 years in the NHL, most of which were spent in relative obscurity, the Florida Panthers franchise has been disolved. To replace the fallen franchise, the NHL has announced that hockey will be returning to the city of Hartford where the Whalers once ruled all things puck.

The Harford Atlantics will play in the newly built Exxon Center and will be coached by Mike Kitchen, who coached the Blues for a short time before St. Louis decided to move on with the hiring of Andy Murray.

Here are your Hartford Atlantics line for the start of the new season.

    Forward Lines
    Juraj Kolnik-Patrick Stefan-Alexander Daigle
    Micheal Holmqvist- Josef Vasicek-Mattias Weinhandl
    Nikita Alexeev-Travis Green-Jonas Johansson
    Chad Wiseman-Petr Taticek-Tyson Nash

    Defense
    Jason Wooley-John Klemm
    Richie Regehr-Dan McGillis
    Tomas Malec-Tomas Mozjis

    Goaltenders
    Mika Noronen
    Chris Beckford-Tseu

The Atlantics are headlined by Patrick Stefan and Alexander Daigle who are highly regarded as NHL busts after renouned as highly anticipated draft picks in the 1990's. The two forwards look to establish themselves finally as NHL stars playing on an upstart team with top line minutes.
*Ok...This team is rated as a 47 overall. So...I have my work cut out for me. Wish me well. I look to draft this team into contention...so there will be no adding of big name FA's. This is truly starting from scratch.

My highest rated players are Noronen, Kolnik, and Wooley who are all just 77's.

    New York (AP)--

The period would be highlighted by a Jaromir Jagr goal on a breakaway that would send the Rags into the third period with the 3-0 lead.

The Atlantics would score their first goal in franchise history when Alexander Daigle would tally on a beautiful individual effort beating a Ranger defenseman before deking Henrik Lundqvist right out of his pants at the 11 minute mark of the 2nd period.

Atlantics Home-Opener A Classic Miracle Comeback

        Hartford, CT (AP)

The Hardford Atlantics kicked off their franchise home opener with an amazing victory against the New Jersey Devils.

The Atlantics would struggle once again in the 1st period, coughing up 4 goals to the Devils in the first 7:27 of the frame, including two goals in under 30 seconds by Travis Zajac.

Before the end of the 1st period the Atlantics would get on the board when Josef Vasicek would beat Martin Brodeur, narrowing the lead to 4-1 heading into the 2nd period as the Devils would outshoot Hartford 17-7 in the 1st period.

The Devils and Atlantics would trade goals in the 2nd period as Josef Vasicek would notch his 2nd of the game 10:09 into the period before Jamie Langenbrunner would tally just under 4 minutes later.

        The Comeback

The Atlantics would go into the 3rd period trailing the Rangers by a 5-2 count which would last until the 11:45 mark of the period when Alexander Daigle would once again show why he was once a highly touted player, scoring his second beautiful goal in as many games bringing the Atlantics to within a pair of goals at 5-3.

The score would stay 5-3 until the Atlantics would score twice in the last 1:07 of regulation getting goals from Mattias Weinhandl and Patrick Stefan, who would step out of the corner and walk in on Brodeur, firing the tying goal off the post with just 45 seconds left to play in regulation.

The Atlantics would take the victory in the shootout as Josef Vasicek would score in the 5th round marking the first victory in Atlantics history.

"This was something I'll never forget...I'd say it really was a bonding experience for us all to pull together and win like this. We really need to focus on starting better and I think we might have something going", said Vasicek who scored an unofficial hat-trick in the victory.

This is a cool idea! I may do this for my dynasty. I love building a team practically from scratch, and this is the way to do it! Thanks for inspiring me!

              NHL News Wire

The Colorado Avalanche have signed Tomas Vokoun to a 5 year deal worth 23 million USD.

The Hartford Atlantics have allowed a combined 7 goals in the 1st period of their first two games while scoring just 1 while outscoring their opponents 5-1 in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

"We need better starts, before the 8 minute markers we have allowed 3 and 4 goals this season...basically 7 goals in less than 15 combined minutes", said head coach Mike Kitchen of the teams dismal starts to the young season. Despite the weak starts the team is 1-1-0 to start the campaign.

Atlantics Win 2nd Straight In Offensive Showdown With Lighting

                Tampa Bay (AP)--

The Atlantics reversed their trend of starting slowly tonight with a 7-5 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning which would officially declare Mattias Weinhandl as the hottest player in the NHL over the last two games.

Weinhandle recorded four points tonight (3G, 1A) and has now registered 4 goals and 3 assists in his last 2 games.

Nikita Alexeev (1g, 1a), Tomas Mozjis (2 assists), and Dan McGillis (2 assists) would all register multiple point games in the wild affair with Tampa Bay.

Alexander Daigle would score his 3rd goal of the season as he has now tallied in each game for the Atlantics to start the campaign.

Tim Taylor would score a pair for the Lightning while Michel Ouellet would add a goal and an assist in the defeat as Tampa Bay picked up their first loss of the season.

The Atlantics second straight win has moved them into 6th in the Eastern Conference.
