A life of adversity- The story of an offensive defenseman

Hey everyone. I recentely got NHL 09 back (the disk broke) and have started a new BAP, Scott Easterbrook. There is already a tonne of scoring forwards BAP's, so i decided to change things up a bit. I edited my stats a bit, making him an 80 overall, as i dont think many people want to read about the AHL. Hope you enjoy, please feel free to give constructive critism about my writing, as this will be a story driven BAP. Special thanks to shinderhizzle for the inspiration, your writing is amazing... So enjoy!

"To be honest, I really dont think he has a chance to make it. There is 3 tumors in his brain now, and the only chance he has is a surgery, and even that has no guarantees."

" Is there any other options? There has to be something, I cant stand to just watch my 9 year old die, your a doctor for gods sake, do something!"

" I'm sorry Mr. Easterbrook, thats all there is, and theres nothing I can do about the expenses."

That was 9 years ago. When my dad was still here, and when I was battling through cancer. I ended up getting the surgery, and making a full recovery. But at a cost. My father left us, as he and my mom could only fight about the money.

Now I'm 18, and entering the draft in a week. I know I'm going to get picked, I have to. I've put everything into hockey, and nothing into school. Someone has to take a chance on me. I mean, you dont score 60 goals a year in highschool and not get looked at. That is, if you dont have one of the worst diseases in the world. I havent told anybody, but the reason I havent played hockey in a year is that I think the cancer is back. I know its wrong to hold it back, but I need to make it.... I have to.

            wow. i'm absolutely awestruck.

great, great start! Love the idea to have a kid battling through cancer...it's scary stuff, just ask Phil Kessel. Gonna follow this one, looks like it's off to a great start!

check out some of the dynasties and other BAP's on here. whatever you do, I'd highly recommend not doing written, story-like recaps of the games. Those take forever to do, and it's hard to really get a feel for what went on when you write it. You could dabble with video, although I don't recommend this, either. Unless you've got a recording device like bhurst does, doing it on a camcorder or a webcam is pretty much for people with no lives. Right, Scott Quickel?

Either way, have fun at the pig roast. But, poor pig!

Or cancer boy himself, my boy Jon Lester. How crazy is that the two most famous current atheletes to have had cancer play in boston

Re: A life of adversity- The story of an offensive defenseman

Today was the day I'd been waiting for. Years of hard work were all comming down to the next 24 hours.

I got up, looked outside to the broken down houses 8 stories below, and could only feel sadness. What if noone picks me up? Mom will continue to work 3 jobs and still have barely any money, and Dad will still fight my mom for every penny.

Then the phone rang. Who would be calling me at 830 in the morning? Then I looked down at the caller ID and saw M.SMITH, my agent, Mike Smith. This guy knew everything there was to know about money, but wasn't exactly a peoples person.

                    " Hey kid... You awake?"

" Yeah, don't worry about it. Whats up? Any teams interested?"

" No, not yet. But it's still early. Just trying to tell you tell you not to worry to much, someones gonna pick you up."

                    " Okay, thanks Mike."

" No problem, but I gotta go. I'll keep you posted. See ya kid."

Well, he seems pretty confident. If only I felt like him...

It was 2 P.M, on the biggest day of my life. All I could do was sleep though. I`d already vommited 4 times, and I felt another wave of nausea hitting me. My mom was at work, like usual, so I had to deal with it alone. All I could do was tell myself that it was just the nausea. Cancer couldn`t be comming back. I still felt like I was lying to myself. Why didn`t I ever feel hungry? Oh god, please help me.

The ringing of my phone woke me up at 830 PM. How the hell did I sleep for so long?

" Hey, kid. I got some good news. A few teams are interested. The Islanders, Oilers, and the Lightning."

" Wow, seriously?! When are they looking to pick me up?"

" 5th round, maybe 4th. You can expect a call from someone in the next couple hours. Good luck kid."

                              " Yeah thanks, bye!"

Now all I had to do was wait. The Lightning, wow... Imagine playing with Vinny Lecavalier. But the Oilers and Islanders are both rebuilding, and I could probably win with them in years to come.... Hey, but then again so are the Bolts.

A ringing phone interrupted my thoughts. My heart jumped. Could it be a GM?

                              "Hello?"

" Hi, could I speak to Scott Easterbrook?"

                              " Speaking, may I ask who's calling?"

" Yeah. This is Paul Holmgren, GM of the Philadelphia Flyers, and I'm calling to tell you that you have been picked up by our organization. You will likely be put on our NHL sqaud to start off the year, and we would like you to fly out to Philadelphia for the 19th of September, and we will keep in touch with flight details. Best of luck, and were proud to have you in the organization. See you on the 19th."

                              " Okay" BEEEEP...

He hungup before I even said bye... Wow.... The Flyers, already in the NHL. I pinched myself. For sure, I must be dreaming. Nope. I have to call Mom.... Our lives are gonna change. No more working 3 jobs. I'm going to make it. Now I just have to wait for the 19th.
