Following the Dream (NHL10 Be a GM Story)

REPORT - Local Pee-Wee League coach looking to make it to the Big Times

For the past three years, the Ottawa Gladiators have gone undefeated in their 20 games per season, and have won their league championship all three of those years. They have also won at the Bell Cup once out of the two times they have appeared in that tournament, but, what has happened in these past three years that has made the Gladiators so powerful? It's the arrival of their new coach, Steven Smyl, a thirty nine year old who has played hockey since he was a young boy. He never got the skill needed to reach the OHL or NHL level, but he managed to learn everything about the game. Steven arrived back in 2006 and has continued to build his team with all of the kids that sign up for the team, he also continues to have regular practices to make sure the kids are at the top of their game to go out and win it all, and it seems to be working out for the best.

I also had time the day after the Bell Cup (where the team failed to win the Cup for the second year) to catch up with coach Steven Smyl and discuss his thoughts on the team, their performance, and his future.

Allen Panzeri - "So Steven, first of all, congratulations on all you've accomplished over the years."

    Steven Smyl - "Thank you."

AP - "First let's talk about the performance of the Ottawa Gladiators, what have you done to make the team so successful over the years?"

SS - "Well, if it weren't for the kids that always sign up for the team, we wouldn't be successful of course."

AP - "But we all know that there is always a child that signs up that is probably new to the sport, what do you do with them?"

SS - "Well, it just takes some patience and practice of course. If the child gets enough practice before the season rolls around, he'll be just as good as his teammates, which leads to a better performance in the end. It explains why we have done so well over the past few years."

AP - "What about the Bell Cup final last weekend, it's probably the only time we have seen your team end up on the losing end. Why do you think this happened?"

SS - "Well, we may be a great team, but we all know that there is always will be teams out there that will be better, and it just happens we have finally seen the first team that is actually better. It hurts the boys to get beat this year, but I know with work, we will be able to become and eventually make it back there and hopefully be able to win the Cup once more."

AP - "What do you plan on doing in you're future, do you want to become a NHL Coach or GM?"

S - "Well, actually it has been a dream of mine to become a coach or GM since I was playing hockey, so if I could have the chance, it would be great, but, it would hurt me to have to move on from the Gladiators."

AP - "But, would you move to the NHL if you had the opportunity?"

SS - "I'd love to give it a try, so yes, I probably would give it a go if I didn't have to move so far it'd be an easier choice, but I guess that comes with the job."

AP - "Rumor has it that some NHL teams may actually be interested in having you become a GM for their team."

SS - "Well, it's the first time I've heard of these rumors, but I'd be excited to hear from one of the owners before the draft!"

AP - "Well, thank you for your time Steve, I wish you luck in getting to the NHL."

    SS - "Thanks."

And it is rumored that some teams in the NHL are actually interested in bringing in Steven to become a coach or even a General Manager for the team. We will be keeping a close eye on where Steven heads as Spring continues on.

OOC: Just letting you know how this will work. Of course you can see the NHL 10 Be a GM Story in the brackets in the title, so of course that means that I'll be waiting until the release date to make the final decision of which team I'll start the career on, but until then I'll be building up a story of where Steven will end up. Also most of the posts will be in first person with Steven's opinion on most things. There will also be some games I'll make up along the way.
    Thanks for reading.

hehe I'm truly honored to have been included in the "noteworthy" segment of that epic post. Welcome aboard, Dragon. Out of curiosity, what was your inspiration for that name?

Heh, now I've got even more reasons to look forward to NHL 10's release with this BAGM.

The anime joke is done, it's not even funny anymore. And I have finished dynasties before. Not many but I have!

Well for the Coach's name, Steven Smyl, I just took my first name, and took the last name from Stan Smyl (A former Canuck that had his jersey retired in 91').

Hope to update tonight when I'm back from Ottawa.

Re: Following the Dream (NHL10 Be a GM Story)

                  April 10th, 2009

It's been three days since the Finals of the Bell Cup, the day of my first loss in my Pee-Wee coaching adventure. And now, today the OMHL (Ottawa Minor Hockey League, and also the league the Ottawa Gladiators play in.) president has called me to the OMHL headquarters for a meeting. For what? I don't have any idea yet, I'm just hoping it's nothing bad.

So instead of sitting around for hours wondering what could happen to me, I got out of my chair and walked out of the little office room I set up in my house, somewhere I could go to get some relaxation and get updated on the hockey world with help from my computer. I walked down the hallway and cut into the kitchen where I saw my wife, Lauren, standing a preparing dinner for the family. I walked over to her, and wasted no time to tell her I was heading out. She just asked where and once I responded she seemed fine with it, and with that, I took off.

                  ---

I pulled into the parking lot of the headquarters and parked close to the entrance of the building. I got out of the car and got into the building where it is silent. There wasn't a person in sight except for the woman that was sitting behind a computer desk at the other side of the room. I walked over as she looked up at me, she then instantly looked down, talking at the desk it seems. Once I was at the desk, I noticed she was speaking into a intercom-type thing. She was then staring at me with a smile.

Assistant - "You can go ahead to Mr.Johnson's office, Mr.Smyl. He's been expecting you."

Steven Smyl - "Oh, sorry, I've been caught up in a few things at home, didn't mean to keep him worried or anythng."

Assistant - "Oh, no no no, he's only been waiting for just over an hour. He's waited almost a whole night before for another Coach."

Steven Smyl - "Oh, that makes me feel better I guess."

Assistant - "Okay, but anyway, you should head on ahead."

And with that I walked away from the desk and head down the hallway to the left, which led to a door. As I got closer to the door, I noticed that there was a nameplate on the door, it read "Mr.Johnson", pretty basic I found. I then gave a quick knock on the door before I opened the door and walked in. When the door was completely open, I saw a man, who I figured was Mr.Johnson, spinning around in a chair with a big screen television on the wall to the side of him. I gave a quick chuckle which made the man freeze and look towards me. He then stood up, almost fell over, and came over to shake my hand and then spoke up.

Mr.Johnson - "Well, so you must be Mr.Smyl, it's a pleasure to get to finally speak to you."

Steven Smyl - "And same to you Mr.Johnson."

Mr.Johnson - "Oh please, just call me Ted."

Steven Smyl - "Err, okay Ted."

Ted Johnson - "Okay, anyway, I didn't just call you here to meet you of course. I called you here to discuss your future."

Steven Smyl - "Ah, everybody has been wanting to talk about that lately."

Ted Johnson - "Yeah, which is why I wanted to discuss it. Now, I'm going to open up sign ups for next season, so I need to know if you're going to try to get a career in the NHL, or stay coaching the Gladiators in the OMHL."

Steven Smyl - "Well I'm not to sure yet..."

Ted Johnson - "Well, you see, there is a problem. I want to put out sign ups tomorrow, so I need to know today."

Steven Smyl - "What does that mean, do you need to know now."

Ted Johnson - "I'm sorry, but yes, that's when I need it."

Steven Smyl - "Well, it's tough decision, but I've always wanted to get to be in the NHL."

Ted Johnson - "Then it's settled."

                  Steven Smyl - "Huh?"

Ted Johnson - "I'll get in contact with Eugene Melnyk, and set up a meeting to see if you can stay in the Ottawa area."

Steven Smyl - "What!? You can do that?"

Ted Johnson - "I sure can, now, get going home, I'll call you after I talk to him tonight."

Steven Smyl - "Wow, thanks Ted."

Ted Johnson - "No problem, I want one of our best OMHL coaches ever to make it to where he needs to be. Now get going, a new possible GM needs to rest, haha."

I'm didn't want to disagree with the person that was going to possibly be the reason I'll get to the NHL, so I shook hands with him once more before turning around and walking out of the room. When the door shut behind me, a smile spread across my face, I knew the dream was in my grasp.
