Re: Following the Dream (NHL10 Be a GM Story)

    April 15th, 2009

My career started off great, got asked to stay around in Ottawa to get to know people one day, and the next I'm announced as the General Manager. Of course that felt great, but the glory only lasted about thirty minutes, because following the Senators meeting, I learned that Dany Heatley wants out. I will listen to his request and try to find him a new team as soon as I can, and hopefully it can be soon.

I looked around my office that had scattered papers everywhere with notes reminding me of upcoming events, who needs to be re-signed, and who I should take a look at when the Draft Combine eventually rolls around. I had been spending my day looking through team's rosters trying to find a few players that I'd like to see playing with the Sens next season. A few teams came to my attention, but I decided I'd call the GMs after the playoffs, give myself more time to think.

Suddenly as I continued to think of what to do with Heatley, there was a knock on my door. I yelled "Come In" and it wasn't long before the door opened and showed Tim Murray, my assistant GM, standing in the doorway. He walked forward and stopped in front of the desk as he began to introduce himself.

Tim Murray - "Hello Mr.Smyl, congratulations on getting the General Manager job."

Steven Smyl - "Thanks, but please, just call me Steven, Mr.Smyl just sounds to weird."

Tim Murray - "Okay Steven, well anyway I have two reasons to come to your office today. First of all, I wanted to introduce myself..."

Steven Smyl - "Oh, don't worry about that, I already know who you are. I should know who my assistant GM is after all, haha, but anyway, what's the second reason why you're here?"

Tim Murray - "Well, I wanted to discuss what were going to do about Dany."

Steven Smyl - "Well I wanted to wait until after the playoffs to talk to teams about where he could go."

Tim Murray - "Well, you can only trade once the playoffs are over of course, but, I say we go around talking to teams until then, getting them to talk, maybe we can get a good deal if we don't spill that Heatley wants out."

Steven Smyl - "That would be incredibly stupid to go around saying Heatley wants out. No teams would want him after that."

Tim Murray - "Exactly. Now, what teams shall we try to discuss with."

Steven Smyl - "I've come down to five teams I want to try and talk to."

Tim Murray - "Okay, who are they?"

Steven Smyl - "So far on my list I have San Jose, Edmonton, Calgary, Los Angles, and Tampa Bay."

Tim Murray - "Sounds like a few good teams there. But, first, who about we set a meeting with Heatley in a week or so."

Steven Smyl - "Sounds good. Set it up at about three pm in a week."

Tim Murray - "Sounds good. Let's go tell his agent or something."

Steven Smyl - "Okay, after the meeting we will start talking with teams."

Tim Murray - "Sounds good. Now, let's go."

I find my way through the paper maze surronding the desk and get to where Tim is standing and make our way out of the office, and our way to find Heatley's agents number.

Re: Following the Dream (NHL10 Be a GM Story)

New Sens GM already looking for a trade?

Last week, Eugene Melnyk confirmed that he had hired former Pee-Wee coaching legend Steven Smyl to become the Senators new General Manager after Bryan Murray had walked away, disappointed in what had happened in the regular season. Smyl gladly accepted the job and went straight to work. But what was he doing since he sat at his desk? Well, other than scouting players for the upcoming draft, rumors are that Smyl has been in contact with many teams looking for a trade.

Reports say that the calls to other teams are all about trying to move one certian player, but there are no confirmed sources on who the player is. There are also rumors that there are at least 3 teams to be interested in forming a deal with Smyl to send the player there. So far, the only team confirmed in wanting the player is the Tampa Bay Lightning.

And since we are trying to shine some light on these rumors, we caught up with Smyl outside of Scotiabank Place, most likely leaving for the night. He gave me some time to ask him some questions.

AP - "Hello Mr.Smyl, first off, congratulations on getting the GM position."

        SS - "Thank you."

AP - "Now, rumors have been circling everywhere about how the Senators have been contacting teams trying to get a trade going. Can you confirm this?"

SS - "Yes, I can. We have been talking to several teams in the past week trying to orginize a deal."

AP - "Oh, so who are the deals revolved around?"

SS - "Well, I'm not going to say the player's name. But, he has requested to be traded away from the Sens, and I'm going to try my best to get a deal made."

AP - "When do you expect the deal to be made?"

SS - "Well, my preference is to have the deal done after the draft and after we get some time to sign free agents once July rolls around. So I'm going to say a deal could be made late July or early Augest."

AP - "Okay, that sounds good. Thank you for your time."

        SS - "No problem."

With that small interview, the rumors have a lot of some new information, such as the player the Sens are looking to trade has requested to be traded from the Sens and there most likely won't be a deal until Early Augest. So with that, all the Sens fans have to look forward to for now is the NHL Entry Draft, where the Senators hold the 9th overall pick.

first of all, great job with this. I am starting to really enjoy getting to know more about your character, which is wonderful.

Now, wouldn't it be downright hilarious if you couldn't choose a team in BAGM mode, and you only had certain choices of teams interested, like in GM Hockey 09? I'd roflmfao, haha.

                  April 23rd, 2009

It's been a week since I have tried to begin running around looking for a possible destination for Dany Heatley. I've had luck with a few teams but have decided to stop talking with teams about it until I get past the Draft and partially through the off-season. So for now, I have to focus on who will be a future Senator.

Ottawa's scouts have said quite a few good players will still be around come our nineth pick. The draft combine is just over a month away, and I'm looking forward to it a lot. Getting to watch the prospects work out and getting to meet a few of them personnally, it really helps a GM decide who they want to draft come time.

I looked around the office looking for something to do but realized there was nothing to do really other than think about who I'd resign, who I'm going to draft. and think about who can befome a free agent. I decided I'd get my head off of all those things and got out of my chair, and walked out of the office to the hallway. I looked around the hallway and noticed a man standing at the end, near the turning point in the hallway. I walked up to the person and noticed they were looking at some papers, he also noticed it was Eugene melnyk, so it didn't take me long to speak up and get his attention.

Steven Smyl - "Oh, hey Melnyk."

Eugene Melnyk - "Huh? Oh.. hi Steve."

Steven Smyl - "So, what are you looking at there?"

Eugene Melnyk - "Just looking over our coaching squad and the roster, making sure we got some cap space."

Steven Smyl - "Got much room?"

Eugene Melnyk - "Were under, but, not by much..."

Steven Smyl - "So, this means it's time to release a few players, right?"

Eugene Melnyk - "Yeah, got any ideas on who?"

Steven Smyl - "Well, Bell and Neil possibly?"

Eugene Melnyk - "I'd miss those two."

Steven Smyl - "I would too, but, we don't got much of a choice."

Eugene Melnyk - "Right, if we release a few more players we might be able to put it towards signing a great player and signing our first round pick."

Steven Smyl - "Yeah, sounds like a plan. Haha."

Eugene Melnyk - "Yeah, pretty basic. Anyway, I got to keep going, have to inform everyone of a meeting coming up."

                  Steven Smyl - "Meeting?"

Eugene Melnyk - "Oh yeah, I haven't told you yet. It's just a meeting for the coaching staff."

Steven Smyl - "Ah, nothing concerning me at least, phew."

Eugene Melnyk - "Haha, nope. Anyway, I'll be going now, so talk to you in three days. It's when the meeting is, one in the afternoon."

Steven Smyl - "Got it, see you then."

From there, me and Melnyk walked our separate ways. I was left to think about the draft coming up and how I could possibly move up in the draft.

OOC: Not to much of an update, couldn't think of much. :P

The game hasn't even come out yet and Demon's already cutting guys from the roster!

With the arrival of the hard-bargain driving Steven Smyl, all players could be cut or traded at any moment. You better watch your step. No one is safe.

sorry to sound like a nit picker. but you do know that once 10 comes out Neil Kovalev AND Elliott will all be signed... so unless you put Neil on waivers or the block, your stuck with him.

                      Nice updates regardless

Re: Following the Dream (NHL10 Be a GM Story)

                          April 26th,2009

Today was the day of the meeting Melnyk had set up. The meeting was where the coaching staff for the next upcoming season would be announced. Not that it had much concern about me, but, it is always good to know who the coaching staff for the team would be. I hoped that it would continue to be Cory Clouston since he did such a good job in the last part of the last season. Hopefully he could continue to do that job.

I stepped out of my car that I parked in the back of the Arena. I walked into Scoitabank place from the back entrance with my key and quickly made my way up to the box. Once again I was one of the last to arrive, but, thankfully I met Tim Murray on the way up so all eyes wouldn't be on me for being late.

I opened the door to the box office and only Melnyk, Leeder, and Crowe were sitting there, patiently awaiting our arrival. Once Murray and I took our seats, Melnyk quickly stood up in front of the table and proceeded to begin the meeting.

Eugene Melnyk - "Thank you all for showing up today to discuss our coaching staff. Now, we have a small change in plans for next season, next season we will have everybody at their origanal positions except the head coach andassistant coaches. Cory Clouston has been demoted to assistant coach. Head Coach is up to Steven to decide..."

Steven Smyl - "Like, decide now?"

Eugene Melnyk - "Well, you could always give a sugestion now."

                          Steven Smyl - "Err..."

Eugene Melnyk - "Take some time, I need to discuss a few fianalcial detials with Cyril and Erin."

Steven Smyl - "Okay, I'll have something by the end I'm sure."

So while Melnyk turned to the two people beside him, Tim and I slid off to the side to discuss what we could possibly do about the head coach.

Steven Smyl - "You got any ideas at all Tim?"

Tim Murray - "None, unless you want to look around the junior leagues for a good coach."

Steven Smyl - "Nah, that could take awhile to get one willing to move here and coach for the Sens."

Tim Murray - "Well, it shouldn't take to long..."

Steven Smyl - "Well, Melnyk wants a response soon."

Tim Murray - "Well, I don't got much of an idea..."

                          Steven Smyl - "Hmm..."

As I finished thinking over any option, I realized one thing that could work. We walked back over to the table noticing that Melnyk's discussion with the other two was finished. We took our seats and Melnyk instantly began to ask his previous question.

Eugene Melnyk - "Well, did you two get any ideas?"

Steven Smyl - "Well, we couldn't think of anything over there, but, when I was heading back, I thought of something."

Eugene Melnyk - "And that was..."

Steven Smyl - "I'll be like Bryan Murray."

                          Eugene Melnyk - "Huh?"

Steven Smyl - "If it's okay with you, I shall coach and be the General Manager at the same time."

Eugene Melnyk - "Well, if you think you can handle it, we can have you coach until we get an actual coach."

Steven Smyl - "No problem for me, it'll be fun!"

Eugene Melnyk - "Okay, it's settled, until we can find a great head coach, Steven Smyl is our Head Coach!"

Melnyk said the meeting was over and I continued to sit at the table with the thought of getting to sit at the bench making the lines and watching the Sens rise to the top.

OOC : Sorry that update took so long to post, enjoy!
