    Re: Washington Capitals

    Redemption, Blip in the Radar

    Washington Post:

12-14/2/2011: Looking for thier 6th win in a row, the Kings would not allow it defeating the Juggernault Caps 5 to 2. Dustin Brown had a field day with Varlamov and company picking up 2 goals and 2 assists.

"This was a bad loss, we should have played better then we did. We definately need to work on a few things before we continue our Western Trip". Boudreau commented after the game.

Having practiced hard the following morning, the Caps redeemed themselves beating the Yotes 5 to 1, but the biggest news of the game was the play of 'Scrappy Russian' Artyukhin (has 118 pims in 19 games, wow).

Commiting 19 minutes of infractions, Artyukhin got into two tussels sending both opponents to the locker room with facial modifications. Aucion (Broken Jaw) and Morris (Broken nose) will both be spending quality time in the press box and will no doubt hide next time these two teams play.

What a behemoth of a grinder, exactly what Washington was looking for.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

16/2/2011: The Caps next opponent were the Ducks and eventhough they beat them 7 to 4, there was definatelty a scare in the 3rd.

"I don't know what happened. I was playing well and then bam, I couldn`t stop anything." Neuvirth

What was Michal talking about, well it was the 4 goal explosion in the 3rd by the Ducks in under 3 minutes of play.

"Don`t get me wrong, we have total faith in Neuvirth. But after putting up a great effort in the first 40 minutes and then letting in 4 goals in under 3, we had to do something. So yes I pulled him, put in Varlamov, and took a timeout. And it worked, Godfrey and Semin (hat trick) were able to tally one each and Varla was able to hold onto the won." Remarked Boudreau. "Now we have 3 more away games and I think for atleast the 1st two games we will give Neuvirth the nights off, maybe we have been playing him to much."

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Other players of note have been Josh Godfrey, Alexander Semin, and Mathieu Perreault.

Josh Godfrey, the human cannon as some are calling him, has been phenominal over the last two games picking up 2 goals (1 a PPG) and 2 assists. His offensive play from the blue line has been incredible and so far looks to be a keeper going into the playoff stretch.

Alexander Semin, who is looking to surpass his 40 goal total of last year, has been on fire knotting 5 goals (30 so far this season) in the last 3 games, including a hat trick against the Ducks, and of course all this from the 2nd line. In a contract year, the Caps would be crazy not to resign him.

Mathieu Perreault, the rookie who bumped Marcus Johansson, has been turning heads with his outstanding performance over the last 21 games. Moving to the 7th spot in rookie scoring he is only 15 points behind 34 point leader Bryan Bickell (who has played 57 games with the Hawks) and could very well take the title if he keeps he streak going.

    TOP 3 Rookies:

    Bickell (Hawks): 34 points
    Hall (Oilers): 31 points
    Seguin (Bruins): 24 points

      Injury, Milestones

      Washington Post:

17/2/2011: Taking a clean but monsterous open ice hit by reargaurd Dan Boyle, Mike Knuble will miss some action.

Listed as a fractured elbow, the big PWF will most likely miss 2 to 3 games before he can crack the line-up again. Laich (15-31-46 in 59 games) will move up from the 2nd line and take his place on the wing with Ovi and Backstrom.

"Were getting closer now to the end, where having every player counts. But having the depth we have in the forward position allows us some flexibility when an injury arises. But don't get me wrong, I do wish Mike a speedy recovery. We want all our soldiers healthy and ready to battle." Boudreau

No one was recalled from Hershey - Boyd Gordon, Matt Hendricks, Matt Bradley, D.J. King will all get more ice time during Knuble's recovery.

      -----------------------------------------------------------------------

17-20/2/2011: Seems like a year of milestones as two other Cap players reach career plateaus, both in goals.

Backstrom, after tallying a beautiful PP goal against the Sharks on Feb 17th, Backy hit the 100 goal mark of his career, 32 this season. Backy has played 300 games, all with the Caps, and is headed for another 100+ point season (projected: 44-59-103).

Laich, a solid complementary winger on the 2nd line with rookie centerman Mathieu Perreault and scoring sensation Alexander Semin, also hit the 100 goal plateau this week notching an EVG in the 3rd period against the Sabres on the 20th of Feb. Laich, a Senators 6th round pick in 2001, has played in 453 games (Senators and Caps, was aquired by the Caps back in 2004), and is headed for the best season of his career (Projected: 21-43-64).

                  Deadline Day

                  Washington Post:

2/3/2011: Deadline day has come and gone as a bunch of players now call different cities home.

There were 10 transactions today involving 21 players, 15 teams, and 10 picks. Washington, Buffalo, Carolina, and New Jersey made most of the moves, while others looked to fill spots or strengthen thier lines - In the end some moves were understandable and some will be tagged as 'What The Hell'. Here is what happened on D-Day, beginning with the Caps.

The Capitals looked to the future this d-day, as they only moved picks:

                  1. Capitals traded two 2011 picks (4th and a 5th) to the Blues (2nd last in the league) for thier 3rd round pick in 2011.

                  2. Capitals traded two more 2011 picks (Dallas 5th from the Eric Fehr trade and a 6th) to the Senators (dead last in the league) for thier 3rd round pick in 2011.

                  3. Capitals traded two more 2011 picks (3rd and a 4th) to the Stars (4th last team in the league) for thier 2nd round pick in 2011.

What can I say, I came out big here without losing much - I stuck to my 'Build For the Future Plan' and have now built up 6 picks (season + deadline trades) in the first 90 players this upcoming draft, it couldn`t have worked out better, well maybe, but I think I did pretty well.

Here are the other moves a D-day:

                  1. Flyers acquired goalie Alex Stalock from the Sharks for winger Andreas Nodl - didn`t know the flyers needed another goalie in the system, ow well I hope the CPU knows what its doing.

                  2. Sabres acquired a 2011 1st round pick from the Bruins for reargaurd Mike Weber - All I can say is 'What the F***'. Weber is rated 74 with so-so potential, if I knew they were going to shoot themselves in the foot like that I would have offered crap to the Boston too. Note here, Weber doesn`t even make the top 6 D on the Bruins.

                  3. Leafs acquire wingers Petr Prucha and Radim Vrbata from the Coyotes for wingers Fredrik Sjostrom and Joey Crab and 'I can't do anything right' reargaurd Jeff Finger - First off being a Leaf fan, thank god for getting ride of Finger, next bring in those two wingers doesn`t necessary fit into 'bottom 6 blue collar form`but it does bring in some nice secondary scoring. Adding Brunette last month and with the firey explosion of Kessel and Versteeg, this team will be a force to be reckoned with come April. But I do want to say one thing, the Leafs have definately lost alot of punch from thier lines, gotten alot weaker.

                  4. Sabres acquire aging winger Tomas Holmstrom from the Wings for reargaurd Steve Montador - The Sabres have lost 2 d-man from thier top 6, I hope Myers/Sekera/Leopold/Morrisonn/Bulter/Rivet can compensate. Obvisouly a move to grab PP and creative goal experience this was a good move for the Sabres, but for the Wings? I don't know, if they expect Lidstrom to retire this was a crappy replacement move.

                  5. Canucks acquire wingers Tim Kennedy and Sean Avery from the Rangers for reargaurd Shane O'Brien and winger Jannik Hansen - Three words 'WORLD CLASS AGITATOR' The Canucks just got a whole lot tougher. Rangers pick up a young two-wayer with some upside and a shut down d-man, little more spice in the line-up.

                  6. Hurricanes acquire reargaurd Colin White from the Devils for winger Sergei Samsonov - The Canes lose a strugling winger and pick up a solid blueliner, the Devils are hoping Sami can find new legs in Jersey.

                  7. Hurricanes acquire reargaurds Bryce Salvador and Rob Davison and winger Kevin Cormier (retired in RLF) to Devils for winger Jussi Jokinen and reargaurd Anton Babchuk - Guess the Canes like stay-at-home d-men as they bring in another with Bryce, going the other way the Devils pick up a great scoring winger in Jussi but with Anton I don`t know, he`s inconsistent and could be a bit more disciplined, I will mark it down as 'just part of the packaged deal'

Well there you have it, a review of each d-day trade, hope you like it.
