          Quick Update

My notes were accidentally thrown away, so here is a quick run down of my last four games and just a little of what I remember from them.

Dec. 1, 2010 – Picked up a 4-3 win at home over Nashville.

Dec. 3, 2010 – Traveled to Buffalo, the NHL's top team, and fell behind 3-0 after the first period and were unable to recover, dropping the contest 4-2.

Dec. 4, 2010 – Pittsburgh came to town, the Penguins are ranked third in the Eastern Conference and lead the Atlantic Division. We squander a 3-2 lead heading to the third and fall 4-3. I (Bryan Hoxsey) pick up my third goal of the season in the second period as I picked up a rebound in the slot and was able to get enough on my shot to get it into the net.

Dec. 6, 2010 – The leagues second best team, the Dallas Stars, scored four unanswered goals to come away with a 4-2 victory. I get into a late third period fight with Krys Barch, he comes away with the win and the medical staff says I may have a fractured jaw..not good. They'll have to wait for the swelling to go down before they can do X-rays, hopefully I won't have to miss any time. We have a couple days off before we travel to St. Louis.

Columbus Record: 10-13-3 overall, 7-6-2 at home, 3-7-1 on the road.

            Blue Jackets get road win

Columbus Gives St. Louis The Blues

Voracek scores twice, Umberger picks up game winner

(Jakub Voracek (93) works behind the net in Columbus' 4-2 win over St. Louis)

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Blue Jacket RJ Umberger's late second period go-ahead goal, along with a pair of tallies from leading scorer Jakub Voracek helped Columbus to a 4-2 road win over the Blues.

Umberger picked up a rebound in front of the net and beat Jaroslav Halak over the glove with just over four minutes to go in the second period to break a 2-2 tie.

“(Marc) Methot made a good low shot from the blue line and the puck came right to off Halak's pad,” said Umberger, who now has five goals on the year. “That's my game, getting position in front of the net, not letting the goalie see the puck, doing the dirty work. It's nice to get rewarded every once and a while.”

Columbus (11-13-3) took a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game when Fedor Tyutin fired the puck past Halak from the slot after taking a perfect pass from Antoine Vermette. The home team knotted the score with less than two minutes to go in the period as BJ Crombeen scored short-handed off a 2-on-1 with Roman Polak. The Blues (15-12-0) held a 20-7 advantage in shots on goal through the opening period, but the visitors led 24-11 over the final two periods.

“The guys really locked it down after the first period,” said Columbus goalie Steve Mason, who made 29 saves. “(The Blues) probably had as many good scoring chances in the first 20 minutes then they did the rest of the game. I thought we played a heck of a road game and that is one thing we have been talking about that we need to improve on.”

Voracek made it 2-1 on the power play early in the second, it was his ninth goal of the season. St. Louis tied things moments later on Alexander Steen's goal from Nathan Oystrick and Crombeen, before Umberger gave the Blue Jackets the lead for good.

“We were lucky to be tied after one period, but I thought we controlled things after that,” said Voracek, who added an empty net goal with 23 seconds left to go. “(St. Louis) was able to answer our first two goals, but we kept our heads and were able to get out of here with a win.”

MY GAME – I was a +1 in 31:42 of ice time. I took seven shots and recorded a pair of hits. The X-rays on my jaw came back negative, but the training staff says I will have to wear a full face shield for about two weeks.

              Jackets don't show up

Gaborik, Rangers Roll Past Blue Jackets

New York scores three times in the first period

(Marian Gaborik scores his second goal in Rangers 4-1 win over Columbus)

COLUMBUS (AP) – There are always going to be nights when nothing goes right for a NHL hockey team, last night was one of those nights for the Blue Jackets.

The New York Rangers, behind a pair of first period goals from league scoring leader Marian Gaborik, dominated every aspect of their 4-1 drubbing of Columbus at the Nationwide Arena. The visitors rank third in the Eastern Conference and looked the part as Ryan Callahan found the back of the net at the 4:58 mark of the first, before Gaborik scored two minutes apart later in the period. Gaborik now has 22 goals and 40 points on the season.

“We were out of it before we even stepped on the ice. We got punched in the mouth and decided that was okay,” said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. “Hey, the Rangers are good, there is no questioning that, but we just gave no effort, had no fire. It was a hard game to watch.”

The visitors continued to create quality scoring chances the final two periods, but Blue Jacket goalie Steve Mason (26 saves) was able to keep it a three goal deficit until Rusian Fedotenko made it 4-0 early in the third period.

“We gave them way too much space to operate in and they took full advantage of it,” said rookie defensemen Bryan Hoxsey, who along with Derick Brassard assisted on Nikita Filatov's power play goal at the 4:33 mark of the third. “They skated circles around us, they out-worked us and they embarrassed us. As a defensive unit, we were terrible.”

The Columbus defense tried in vain to limited Gaborik's touches, but the highly skilled forward seemed to always be in the right place at the right time.

“We played well and to jump out like we did was nice too,” said Gaborik. “We capitalized on the chances we had in the first period and played pretty well defensively. It was a good road win for us.”

                  Thanks for following sensfan!!!!

I'm have a great time playing and post my results on here. I'm a long time player of the EA NHL series (back to NHL'94 days), I'm still trying to learn all the controls and moves, while also trying to find a good mix of being a good defensmen and picking good times to shoot or pinch in with my BAP player. I'll get it one of these days.

I'm not sure what you mean by how I got started in NHL, do you mean my BAP player, the NHL 11 game itself or something else?

Signed with Saginaw out of college, team made it to the Memorial Cup final game, but lost. Bryan Hoxsey (my BAP) had an ok four games and was drafted in the second round (32 overall selection) by Columbus.

Played really well in the preseason for the Blue Jackets and was on the first defensive pairing to begin the season. Around fives games in was put on the second line and have been there the last 20 games or so, playing along side Fedor Tyutin.

                          Flames Burn Columbus

                          Flames Burn Blue Jackets

Calgary hands Columbus second straight loss

(Niklas Hagman and Marc Methot battle against the boards in Calgary's 2-1 win, Hagman scored the game-winner in the third period)

CALGARY (AP) – The season frustration continues for Columbus.

After holding the Flames scoreless through the opening two periods, the home team scored a pair of tallies in the third, including the game winner from Niklas Hagman and defended their home ice with a 2-1 victory at Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Flames (16-13-2) opened the scoring at the 5:48 mark of the final period when Sean Avery walked in the slot and beat Blue Jacket backup goalie Mathieu Garon to the glove side. Hagman and Kyle Wellwood picked up assists on Avery's eight goal of the season.

“That one was on me,” said Garon after the game. “It was a shot that I have to stop in that situation and I didn't. What is so disappointing is that the guys did such a great job killing off (Calgary's) power plays and then I let an easy one in. It was an other tough loss.”

The Blue Jackets (11-15-3) came into the game ranked just 21st in the league in penalty killing, but the Flames have had their struggles with the man advantage as well converting on just 14 of 118 chances (11.9%) which put them near the bottom in that category. While Calgary was 0-for-5 with the extra skater in the game, Columbus cashed in on their only power play chance when Rick Nash tied the game at 1-1 with just under eight minutes to go. Fedor Tyutin and RJ Umberger picked up the helpers as Nash worked free from the left boards and put a backhand shot past Flame goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.

“We grabbed the momentum and then in a blink of an eye they were up again,” Nash said. “We let Hagman just walk to the front of the net and you just can't do that. Right now we are having breakdowns at the worst times and teams are going to make you pay for mistakes like that. Calgary sure did tonight.”

Hagman scored his eight goal of the season just 25 seconds after Nash had knotted the score as he took a pass from Wellwood down the left wing and moved in to point blank range before wristing a shot past Garon into the top right corner of the net.

“It's like a broken record for us, we don't seem to be able to hold on to any momentum we get,” said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. “Other than the penalties I thought we played a pretty solid opening two periods, then we did a good job of regrouping after they took the lead. We just need to find a way to be the team that scores that big goal in crunch time, until we do that, this tail spin is going to continue.”

Calgary held a 34-22 shot on goal advantage, won 60 percent of the faceoffs and gained a little revenge for a one-goal loss in Columbus back in October.

Played really well in the preseason for the Blue Jackets and was on the first defensive pairing to begin the season. Around fives games in was put on the second line and have been there the last 20 games or so, playing along side Fedor Tyutin.
32nd overall? im not trying to brag or put you down but that seems kind of weird because i got just 6 points in the memorial cup and we won and i got drafted 2nd overall by the bruins? pretty big difference. kind of weird

I got good grades in every game for positioning, but I only had 1 point in the four games. I'm sure I would have been drafted higher if I had more points, but it has worked out ok.

Columbus isn't the greatest team, but I'm hoping that as my player gets better, the team will as well. Also the first line forwards havn't played very well so far which hasn't helped us to our record.

I was really surprised I was able to stay at the pro level, figured I'd get sent down, but like I said I had a pretty good preseason and then held my own early in the regular season.

                                Blue Jackets Fall To Canucks

VANCOUVER (AP) – The Blue Jackets fell behind the host Canucks and were never able to recover in dropping a 3-1 contest at Rogers Arena.

Mikael Samuelsson opened the scoring at the 7:16 mark of the first off an assist from Ryan Kesler. Samuelson beat Steve Mason stick side for his 11th goal of the season. Daniel Sedin made it 2-0 just over midway through the second on a shot that Mason got a tiny piece of, but was unable to control before it trickled over the line.

“Once again we dug a hole for ourselves,” said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. “We did a better job of limiting thier space, but when you only get one goal it's going to be hard to win. Mason did a good job tonight, he just did get a lot of help.”

The Blue Jackets cut the lead to one goal late in the second when rookie defensemen Bryan Hoxsey lit the lamp for the fourth time this year. Hoxsey's wrist-shot off a faceoff win beat Roberto Luongo to the far post and made it 2-1.

Canuck Keith Ballard scored off a one-timer at the 9:36 mark of the third to put the finishing touches on a Vancouver victory.
