    Big Third Leads to Win

Columbus Has Big Third Period In Win

Blue Jackets score four goals in final period, beat Oilers

(Columbus celebrates one of their five goals in win over Edmonton)

EDMONTON (AP) – It's no secret that the Columbus Blue Jackets have struggled putting the puck in the net this season, but last night in the third period against Edmonton they could do no wrong.

The Blue Jackets scored four unanswered goals and as a result not only won the game 5-1, but snapped a three-game losing streak as well. Nine different players hit the score sheet for Columbus in the game.

“It was a great team win,” said Columbus forward Jakub Voracek, who had a pair of goals. “We just got on a roll and the puck bounced our way. After the last three games we really needed a performance like this.”

The Blue Jackets killed off back-to-back shorthanded situations to the leagues top power play team before Rostislav Klesla scored at the 8:23 mark. The Oilers have converted nearly a third of the power play chances this season, but were 0-for-4 in the game. Ryan Jones tied the game for the hosts eight minutes into the second period on a break-a-way off a great lead pass from Gilbert Brule.

“We talked about really getting things done during the second intermission and the fellows did just that,” said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. “We finally were the team that scored the big goal and then the momentum really switched to our side. Now, your not going to score four goals in a period every game, but I think we proved to ourselves that we have the make up to compete with any team in this league.”

Jared Boll's tip off a Anton Stralman shot eluded Oiler goalie Nikolai Khabibulin at the 7:58 mark of the third to give Columbus a 2-1 lead. Voracek scored nearly seven minutes later to make it 3-1. Ethan Moreau, who had come up empty on a penalty shot moments before Voracek's tally, got redemption by making it 4-1 off a Chris Clark helper. Voracek finished the scoring by getting an unassisted goal with just under two minutes to play.

“What a way to finish up this road,” said Blue Jacket goalie Steve Mason, who picked up the win in net. “It was nice to see the guys put the puck in the net. Defensively we didn't make to many mistakes and we will have to do even better if we expect to beat Dallas in a couple of days. They aren't the best team in the league by luck. We'll need to put together another solid game that's for sure."

Note: The goals by Klesla and Boll were the first of the season for each. The Blue Jakcets continue to roll on the power play by converting 2-of-5 chances. It was Clark's first game back from an injury.

MY GAME – Had five shots, but didn't pick up any points in 36:21 of ice time, but if we score five goals and win I'm just as happy then if I score and we lose.

Blue Jackets Stay Hot, Beat Stars

      Columbus wins second straight game

(Rick Nash celebrates his second period goal in his teams 5-1 win over Dallas)

COLUMBUS (AP) – The beat continued for the Blue Jackets, even with the the NHL's best team it town.

Columbus, coming off an impressive win at Edmonton, picked up where they left off by scoring three times in the first period and defeating Dallas 5-1 at Nationwide Arena. The Stars entered the game with a league best 20-9-2 record.

After scoring four times in the third period against the Oilers, Columbus led 3-1 after one period thanks to goals by Fedor Tyutin, Rick Nash and rookie Bryan Hoxsey. Loui Eriksson had the lone goal for Dallas.

“We came out very focused and got off to a great start,” said Tyutin, who scored on the game's first shot just a minute into the contest. “Hoxsey and Nash made the play on my goal, out working them on the boards. All I had to do was get it on net and thankfully it found it's way through.”

Nash made it 2-0 minutes after the first goal as he skated from behind the net and beat Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen to the stick side. Just over a minute later Hoxsey found the back of the net off a goal mouth scramble and it was 3-0 in favor of the home team.

“This team has the capability of scoring goals, we just haven't done it so far this season,” said Nash, who finished with a pair of goals and assists, as well a a first star selection. “I can say enough about the game Hoxsey and Tyutin played back on defense, wow, those guys played their asses off and they were rewarded on the score sheet.”

Nash scored his second of the game and 11th of the season at the 15:57 mark of the second period to make it 4-1. Antoine Vermette and Hoxsey set up the Nash tally, with Hoxsey making a great pass to put Nash all alone right in front of the net. The Blue Jackets held a 32-10 shots on goal advantage through the first two periods.

“It was a fun night, we did a lot of the things that we haven't been doing of late,” said Hoxsey, who had his first four point game as a pro. “We have had a lot of ups-and-downs so far the year, but maybe the last four periods will give us confidence and get us going in a positive direction.”

Columbus added a third period goal from Sammy Pahlsson, assisted by Nash and Hoxsey at the 3:06 mark. With the game in had, Columbus had a scare when Hoxsey was taken to the dressing room following a hard hit into the boards with 13 minutes to go, but the rookie was back on the bench for the final few minutes and was on the ice when the final horn sounded.

“He banged up his hip a little and had the wind knocked out of him, but he is OK,” said Scott Arniel, Columbus head coach after the game. “We will check him out again tomorrow, but the medical staff told me it will end up being nothing more than a bruise.”

MY GAME – WOW, a four point night and my fifth goal of the season, just awesome. I'm tied for fourth on the team in scoring now. I was a +3, had six shots in 31:01 of ice time. My hip is pretty sore, but I plan on not missing any time.

Columbus drops a pair of games

        Quick Update

        Dec. 21, 2010 – Calgary 3, Columbus 2 (shootout)

Derick Brassard scored his second goal of the year at the 16:34 mark of the first period to give Columbus a 1-0 lead. Jarome Iginla tie things up for the Flames with a shot off the post two minutes into the third while on the power play.

Sammy Pahlsson scored his eighth of the season three minutes later and it was 2-1 Blue Jackets, however David Moss tied the game at 2-2 with just over a minute to play with a deflection in front of Steve Mason.

There was some good chances for both sides in overtime, but the game was still tied at the horn. In the shootout Calgary got goals from Iginla, Kyle Wellwood and Olli Jokinen, while Rick Nash and Bryan Hoxsey failed on their attempts for Columbus.

Key Stats: Columbus out-shot Calgary 41-28, but the Flames led in hits 29-7. Columbus really hurt themselves as they were 0-for-9 on the power play – Calgary is ranked first in the NHL in killing penalties.

MY GAME – Was a -1, had 9 shots, but took two penalties (Iginla's goal was with me in the box). Had 42:55 of ice time, a career high.

        Dec. 23, 2010 – Vancouver 1, Columbus 0

The only goal of the game was scored by Canuck defensemen Christian Ehrhoff 1:35 into the third period. Ehrhoff's eighth goal of the season was through traffic and assisted by Henrik Sedin and Keith Ballard – beat Mason (19 saves) on the glove side. Roberto Luongo earned the shutout in goal for Vancouver by making 23 saves.

Key Stats: Columbus out-shot Vancouver 23-20 in the defensive battle. The Blue Jackets failed on their only power play attempt, the Canucks were 0-of-0. Columbus defensemen Anton Stralman was injured in the game and the medical staff says he starined his wrist and will miss 3 to 4 weeks.

MY GAME – Was a -1, had 4 shots and 1 hit in 43:29 of ice time (new career high, again).

The Blue Jackets are now 13-17-4 on the season.

          Another Update

          Another Update

          Dec. 26, 2010

          Chicago 6, Columbus 3

The host Blackhawks lead 3-1 after one period, with Nash picking up the goal for the Blue Jackets. It was 5-2 thru the second as Toews and Bolland scored goals sandwiched around a Chris Clark tally. Midway through third, Jakub Voracek scored his 13th goal of the year to make it 5-3, but Troy Brouwer scored minutes later for Chicago. Garon took the loss in goal, while Turco got the win for Hawks.

MY GAME – Was a -3, took 3 shots and had one hit in 36:33 of ice time. Moved to right defense and now matched with Marc Methot on the second line, having a little trouble adjusting to the move and was getting really comfortable with Tyutin (now first line def.), but coach wanted to shake up the lines.

          Dec. 27, 2010

          Minnesota 4, Columbus 1

The Blue Jackets take a 1-0 lead on a goal from Voracek two minutes into the game. His 14th of the year is assisted by Hoxsey and Huselius. Sheppard scores for Wild on the power play at the 11:27 mark of the first to tie things up. Minnesota then gets goals from Brunette in the second and a pair of tallies from Koivu in the third to get the road win. Backstrom, the Wild goalie, makes 31 saves in the game, he leads the NHL in GAA 1.78 and save percentage .943.

MY GAME – Was a -1, picked up an assist, took 6 shots, but committed two penalties in 29:07 of ice time.

          Dec. 30, 2010

          Columbus 4, Toronto 1

Two of the three worst NHL teams hooked up in this one. Chris Clark and Marc Methot both scored their third goals of the year in the first period. The Maple Leafs made it 2-1 in the second, but Sammy Pahlsson and Klesla netted empty net goals late in the third to give Columbus the win. Records – Columbus 14-19-4; Toronto 10-23-3. Mason made 31 saves in net for Columbus to earn the win. Columbus snaps four-game losing streak.

MY GAME – Was a +1, had an assist on Methot's goal in the first, took 8 shots and had two hits in 34:39 of ice time.

I have one more game in December, will have a game story and then an update with standings, league leaders and more. Thanks for following guys.

            Sens shutout Blue Jackets

Not much too say about this one. Outplayed the Sens in every way, but couldn't put the puck in the net. Peter Regin scored off a scramble in front at the 8:12 mark of the second period, Ryan Shannon and Chris Campoli picked up assists. Mason deserved better in net, he made some really good saves on the night, but you can't win if you don't score.

MY GAME - Was a -1, took 6 shots, had one hit in 30:21 of ice time.

                      Columbus wins in shootout

Columbus Starts New Year With Shootout Win

Garon picks up win in net for Blue Jackets

NASHVILLE (AP) – Kristian Huselius beat Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne in the third round of a shootout to help give Columbus a 3-2 victory at Nashville Arena.

Rinne had stopped Rick Nash and rookie Bryan Hoxsey, while Blue Jacket goalie Mathieu Garon turned away a trio of attempts. Columbus is now 3-0-0 verses Nashville this season.

The home team opened the scoring when Matthew Lombardi scored his seventh goal of the season at the 12:06 mark of the first period. Lombardi's slapshot from the left circle beat Garon over the blocker with Patric Hornqvist and Jordin Tootoo picking up assists. RJ Umberger tied the game four minutes later when Rinne couldn't control the rebound off a shot from Fedor Tyutin. The Blue Jackets out-shot Nashville 12-3 in the opening 20 minutes.

“I thought we controlled things in the first, but they were able to get on the board first,” said Umberger. “My goal was just being in the right place at the right time, but Fedor put a good low shot on. Rinne was down and luckily I was able to elevate the puck over him.”

After a scoreless middle period, the visitors took a 2-1 lead on Antoine Vermette's 11th tally of the season. The Blue Jackets were shorthanded, but Vermette picked up a loose puck and fired a shot over Rinne's glove and into the net from the right circle. Columbus looked to have the game under control until back-to-back penalties led to a Predator 5-on-3 power play in the final minutes. Nashville, after many great saves by Garon, finally tied the game when off a faceoff win by Steve Sullivan, Ryan Suter's shot through traffic eluded Garon with 24.1 on the game clock.

“We made some bad decisions late in the third and it almost cost us,” said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. “Garon played well and made some big stops for us, but we needed to do a better job of clearing the puck. It was a nice way to start the year.”

MY GAME – Was a +1, took 10 shots, had 3 hits in 40:26 of ice time. Also, I had Rinne beat in the shootout, but my shot hit the post.

Thanks for following. Hartnell's having a great year, but Gaborik will be tough to beat..will just have to see how things work out.

I think it is pretty safe to say that no one from the Blue Jackets is going to win it..ha..ha. We just (other that a few games) have had trouble putting pucks in the net.

Columbus splits with Phoenix and Anaheim

                          Quick Update:

                          Jan. 4, 2011 – Phoenix 1, Columbus 0

Lee Stempniak's first period power play tally was the contest's only goal. Stempniak's 22nd goal of the season was assisted by Martin Hanzal and Ed Jovanovski at the 14:57 mark, his shot beat Steve Mason stick side.

The Blue Jackets out-shot the Coyotes 33-28 in the game, but Ilya Bryzgalov (16-18, 3.02 GAA) stood tall, making numerous outstanding saves on shots that looked like sure goals.

“We had so many quality chances, but we just were unable to get the puck past Bryzgalov,” said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. “He had an answer for every shot we threw at him. Mason had another solid game for us and the defense played well, we just couldn't light the lamp. It was another tough loss.”

                          Jan. 7, 2011 – Columbus 3, Anaheim 2

Nikita Filatov scored a pair of power play goals, including the game-winner with 40 seconds left, to give the Blue Jackets a 3-2 road victory.

“It was a nice way to finish a tough road game, especially after not being able to put the puck in the net the other night in Phoenix,” said Arniel. “Filatov played his best game of the year and we will need more guys to step it up like that if we want to continue to push back to that .500 mark.”

Filatov scored in the first period, his sixth of the year, on a shot from the left circle to tie things at 1-1. Duck's captain Ryan Getzlaf had opened the game's scoring just two minutes in. Antoine Vermette scored the lone goal of the second period to make it 2-1, but Joffrey Lupul evened things early in the third, before Filatov came up big late.

“Hoxsey made a great play to keep the puck in and then get it deep in the offensive zone,” said Filatov. “I turned and was really looking to give the puck up, but no one picked me up and I was able to get a quick shot off. It was nice to be ale to contribute and help the team win.”

                          Columbus is now 16-21-4.

MY GAMES – Against Phoenix I had a pair of hits in 34:17 of ice time. In Anaheim I was a -1, but picked up a couple assists, including one on Filatov's winner. Also took seven shots, was credited with one hit in 31:49 of ice time.

I'm starting to adjust to playing on the right side of the defense and getting a better feel with Methot as my pairing, but really wish Arniel would put me back with Tyutin and move me back to the left side. I feel I'm playing pretty well right now, but we really need to start scoring more. Mason has really been playing well for us, now we just need to give him help in the offensive end.

                              Long overdue update

                              Long Overdue Update:

                              Jan. 8, 2011 - Los Angeles 6, Columbus 5 (OT)

Alexei Ponikarovsky's goal with 4.2 seconds left in overtime gave the Kings the win at the Staples Center.

The Blue Jackets got first period goals from Rostislav Klesla (third of season) and Fedor Tyutin (seventh of season), but LA countered with tallies from John Zeiler and Willie Mitchell.

The Kings scored a pair of goals midway through the second with Ponikarovsky and Peter Harold scoring a minute apart, but RJ Umberger lit the lamp with 1.2 seconds to go to make it 4-3. It was his seventh goal of the year.

Rookie Bryan Hoxsey tied the game 43 seconds into the third period with a power play goal and minutes later Antoine Vermette's tap in, his 13 goal of the year, gave Columbus a 5-4 lead. However Zeiler beat Steve Mason with just under six minutes to go and the game went to overtime.

Late in the extra period, Tyutin's give-a-way led to Ponikarovsky moving in all alone and firing the winner past Mason.

“That was a tough one to lose,” said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. “We played well in spurts, but the bottom line was it wasn't good enough win.”

                              Jan. 11, 2011 - Columbus 3, Phoenix 2

Sammy Pahlsson's unassisted goal at the 14:49 mark of the second period lifted the Blue Jackets over host Phoenix.

The Coyotes opened the scoring ten minutes in as Taylor Pyatt shot the puck past Mathieu Garon, but Blue Jacket rookie Bryan Hoxsey quickly countered with his seventh goal of the season just over a minute later as his shot through traffic escaped Ilya Bryzgalov. Fedor Tyutin then tallied from nearly the same spot eight minutes later to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

“The defensemen stepped up in that first period,” said Arniel. “They made a great effort in jumping into the play and were rewarded on the score sheet. Hoxsey and Tyutin have really started to click.”

Petr Prucha tied the contest mid-way through the second, but Pahlsson picked up a loose puck at the blue line, move in and saw his shot deflect off the glove of Bryzgalov and trickle into the net. Garon (5-3, 2.50 GAA) made the one-goal lead stand as he stopped 11 third period shots.

Columbus out-shot Phoenix 37-25, while also winning 72-percent of the faceoffs in the ganme.

                              Jan. 14., 2011 - Detroit 8, Columbus 3

In the first of a home-and-home series, the Red Wings dominated the host Blue Jackets in almost every facet of the game. Henrik Zetterberg tallied a hat trick, part of a four-point night as Detroit rolled at Nationwide Arena.

The teams were tied at 1-all entering the second period, but Detroit then scored six unanswered goals, including five in the middle frame. Zetterberg's goal at the 7:32 mark of the third completed the hat trick, Sammy Pahlsson and RJ Umberger followed with goals, but it was to little, to late.

“Not much you can say about this one, we just laid down for them in the second period,” said Arniel. “We need to just forget about this one, it was probably our worst game of the season. We'll see what we can do tomorrow at their place, I expect we will come out a little more focused.”

                              Jan. 15, 2011 - Detroit 3, Columbus 1

The Blue Jackets had a slim 1-0 lead heading to the third period thanks to Antione Vermette's second period goal, but the Red Wings awoke in the third. Detroit had goals from Danny Cleary, Mike Modano and Valtteri Filppula to pick up the home win.

“It was a great first two periods, but then the wheels fell off,” said Arniel. “I was happy with the effort tonight despite the outcome and third period. This is a tough place to play and I thought we came in and put together a better effort tonight.”

The Red Wings out-shot Columbus 32-18 in the game.

                              Jan. 18, 2001 - Tampa Bay 4, Columbus 1

Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith made 44 saves and his club gave him a 3-0 lead after one period as they won at home.

Columbus held a 45-30 shot advantage in the game, including a eye-popping 27-7 edge in the second period. The Blue Jackets were 0-for-9 on the power play, including coming up empty in six chances in the second.

RJ Umberger's third period goal, his ninth, was the only tally for Columbus in the game.

                              Jan. 19, 2011 - Columbus 6, Florida 5 (shootout)

Jakub Voracek had a pair of goals and an assist, Kristian Huselius a goal and two assists, and Marc Methot the game-winner in the shootout as Columbus snapped their three-game losing streak on the road.

The Blue Jackets led 3-1 after the opening 20 minutes as Voracek scored his two goals and Rick Nash added another. The Panthers tied the game in the second, but Huselius made it 5-4, scoring just a minute into the third. Florida's Steve Bernier retied the game over a minute later, but neither club could break the time the rest of the third or in overtime.

Nash opened the shootout with a score, but David Booth scored on Florida's last chance to extend the shootout, before Methot's goal was followed by Blue Jacket goalie Steve Mason stopping Bryan Allen and giving Columbus the win. The Blue Jackets are now 18-24-5, but still in last place in the Central Division.

“We didn't play that well, but we got the result,” said Mason. “We've had a bad couple of games, so to get one, especially in an exciting shootout was big. We're not giving up on the season yet, we still have a lot of games left. We will see how things go from here.”
