Ignite The Flame - The Rebuilding

    calgary_flames_spirit_4.jpgCalgary, AB, June 22 2010, 10:00 AM

Ownership announced last week that Jay Feaster had been fired as the GM of the Calgary Flames, Stephen Jennings has been hired as his replacement, we go live to a press conference with Jennings.

"I'd first off like to thank ownership for giving me this opportunity to lead a prestigious franchise such as the Flames, it is a true honour. I'd also like to thank you fans, and media for coming to this event today. As you all know the NHL entry draft is tommorow, and I intend to be very busy. The roster right now is comprised of a very veteran, experience core, but who's days are also numbered in the NHL. In other words, this team is amongst the eldest in the league, and we're in the red when it comes to cap. To be honest i'm not sure if the roster we have right now is a cup contender, we are odds on to be in the playoffs, but we don't seem ready for the big prize at this time, and don't have a lot of room to make the needed improvements to reach that stage. Therefore, it is my duty to get Calgary out of cap trouble, and help us prepare for the future, that means holding onto picks and prospects, and perhaps letting go of some fan favorites, and players that have been great for this organization. We are going to build this team from the net out. We're also going to be a very big, and rugged team, we want to be tough for other teams to play against. We're going to build this team the right way, and that's with young talent and growing through the draft and through our own developmental system. Once again, I'm tremendously happy for this opportunity, but if you'll please excuse me, I must go and make some preperations for the draft, thank you for your time."

Stephen Jenning's comments on the draft and resign phase

"Well I am pleased with what we have done here in the past week or so. I had a structure in mind going into the draft, a mould if you will, and I followed our blueprint and I feel we came out with a very good crop of players. We picked up a top goalie prospect who we hope can flourish in our system and one day start for us here. We also picked up 6'4 and a 6'5 defensemen, who both have great vision and great hockey sense, and who will add to our rugged reputation. Both love to throw around the body, and both are responsible in our own zone, they'll be a nightmare for opposing forwards. We also picked up a blue-collar winger who can score just as well as he can check. Once again, I am looking forward to seeing these players develop in our system and make it to the big team. We had a quiet resign phase, we were able to lock up Erixon, who is another great defensive prospect, and we bought out a few players to make roster space. Going forward, we still are in deep with the cap trouble, so I have my hands tied when it comes to free agent shopping, expect some deals in the next few weeks to make some cap room, but more importantly, get our team on the road for success in the future. Thanks for your time, I must now go see to my duties."

      MAJOR TRADE NEWS

      July 1st, 2010

Calgary trades RW Jarome Iginla 92 OVR C/C/C at $6.750M for 3 years and a 2012 3rd Round Draft Pick

To Edmonton for LW Taylor Hall 79 OVR A/A-/A- at $1.360M for 3 years

''Talk about a tough trade, this was my first one in my career, and I have no doubt this will be the toughest, nothing can top this. I just moved the captain of the Calgary Flames out of town, but he was also more than the captain, he was the face of the franchise, and he was a good community guy. Jarome served the Flames well, and will be missed dearly. But in return we pick up one of, if not the, most promising prospect winger out there right now. Taylor Hall embodies everything I am trying to do here in Calgary, he is big, speedy, and plays the game the right way. He knows how to use his body to his advantage, and never goes easy on anyone. Taylor will be a top goal scorer in this league for many years to come, and is simply a perfect fit down here in Calgary. As much as it pains me to make this deal, I firmly believe we have turned the reins over here in Calgary. Jarome was a 33 year old, most likely on the brink of retiring, we now rejuvenate the franchise and bring in an 18 year old super power, who will be a key part of the core group here in Calgary for many years to come. Once again, this is a very heartbreaking move to make for me, and the fans, but I truly feel our organization will benefit greatly from this. Thanks for your time.''

        Free Agent Signings and Trades

        Calgary Flames moves

Calgary trades C Olli Jokinen 84 OVR C Pot at $2.75M for 2 years and a 2012 4th round pick

To Los Angeles for D Matt Greene 83 OVR C Pot at $2.95M for 4 years

''Another really tough one to make, but this one will help us with our immediate success, and as well this helps to build our rep as a tough, rugged team. Greene is a 27 year old with a lot of hockey left in him, he is a big guy at 6'3 230lbs, and loves to throw the body. Greene has been in plenty a fight in his day and will help to add to our gritty team. Matt is an absolute relentless defender and will wreak havoc on opposing forwards coming down the ice, in the corner, and in front of the net. Very pleased to have him on board. Going the other way is Jokinen and a late pick, I said I wouldn`t move many picks but this one made sense. As for Olli, he`s a older veteran guy, who did not fit in with my blue print, but will have a shot at a championship in LA. I`m happy to have gotten him to a team that is a contender, I thank Olli for what he has done, and thank you for your time.''

Calgary deals LW Fredrik Modin 78 OVR C- POT at $0.950M for 1 year

To Ottawa for a 2011 7th round draft pick

''This is a matter of a couple of things. For one, we needed some cap space, so this freed us up about a million, which is awesome. As well, dealing for Hall and Greene I have lost two late draft picks, this 7th rounder helps us to keep our depth in the draft, which is where I want to build our team from. Modin would have been a nice 4th line guy, but not right now for us in Calgary, our best wishes go out to him and his stay in Ottawa.''

        Other Notable Trades

BUF gets C O'Sullivan from CAR in return for RW Kaleta and RW Sutch

CBJ gets C Madden from MIN in return for D Lepisto

BUF gets D Zanon from MIN in return for D Leopold

SJ gets RW Burish from DAL in return for C Mitchell

DET gets C Campbell, D Mcquaid, and D Seidenberg from BOS in return for RW Eaves, LW Tomas Holmstrom, a 2011 4th round pick, and a 2012 6th round pick

        Free Agent Signings

Calgary signs RW Evgeny Artyukhin 81 OVR C POT to a 3 year, $0.795M contract

''Geny is a guy that fits what we`re trying to do here perfectly. He works very hard, throws around the body, and keeps the other team on their toes. Any time you can pick up a guy like this for under a million is an awesome deal. Geny will be a physical presence, kill penalties, and provide some secondary scoring, very pleased to have him on board.''

        Other Notables

ATL signs G Cristobal Huet 82 OVR to a 2 year deal

CAR signs RW Enver Lisin 78 OVR to a 2 year deal

STL signs G Thomas Greiss 78 OVR to a 1 year deal

        Mission Statement

''With the season a month away, I am here today to give our mission statement for this coming season. We are expecting to be a competitive team and not be an easy target for anyone. We are looking for atleast 38 wins this season, and a bottom seed in the playoffs. This team is different from when I came on board, but I feel it is still a great club now, and will be a great club down the road.''

Opening Day Deal CGY sends LW Alex Tanguay (not expected to be in line-up regardless) to TB for LW Sean Bergenheim. Jennings says that Bergenheim is there in case of injury, and could even see time in the normal 4th line rotation. Move also clears a few million in cap for the Flames.

Though you made some good trades for the future, that Iginla trade was pretty bad. I'm sure you could have gotten more for just Hall. Not saying you'd be able to grab Paajarvi/Eberle as well. But Iginla could have gone for more.

Yeah i actually agree with you 100%, the thing I didn't take into account when picking the Flames ( I knew i was going to go after hall no matter who I was ) was that Calgary has a bad rep with Edmonton, so that made them all the more stubborn, I was trying to work Colton Teubert into the mix but they wouldn't budge.

Yet from my experience with the game, Hall ends up around 94-95 in a few years and more likely than not gets better stats where it matters for a goal scorer than iginla (ie speed, shooting , deking )

I actually am taking the opposite stance. That seems like a ridiculously outrageous trade and you would never get away with it in real life. The chances of the Oilers trading away Hall are slim to none, and the Flames have absolutely no one who could compare in a trade. It wouldn't make any sense for the Oilers to trade away the future of their franchise for a guy who's past his prime and is currently, at best, a really good forward.

Other than that, I like some of the other moves. Good luck this season.

Yeah as far as realism goes you got a point there. So I also agree with you as well lol. Anyway, I just hope Hall pans out into what I need. And yeah thanks for the good luck, I'll need it lol.

(another trade before season begins, and an update from the first game, updates from now on will be coming in 10 game intervals)

                    Calgary trades D Mark Giordano 81 OVR C pot @ $3.770M for 6 years and a 2011 7th Round Draft Pick (OTT)

To Boston for RW Brad Marchand 79 OVR B- pot @ $0.690M for 1 year and a 2011 4th Round Draft Pick

"This may come off as a odd deal to some, but if you just hear me out, I can explain why we came out very far ahead in this move. For one, Mark was going to be playing on our third defensive pair, I was not interesting in paying our 6th defenseman almost 4 million dollars at this point in time. As well, we already have our PP "quarterback" and that is Jay Bouwmeester. With Giordano out we are able to free up about 3 million in cap space, and move in Anton Babchuk, a real bruiser and solid PP and PK guy into our 6th slot on the team. We become that much tougher with Bab in the line up. And I havent even began on what we got in return! For one, we move up 3 rounds in the draft from 7th to 4th, nice leap frog in my view. And we pick up an absolute workhorse in Brad Marchand. Brad is a spectacular two way forward who still has a lot of upside and will be able to improve his offensive and defensive skills under our coaching. He is a very complete player even though he is still early in his career, block shots, make a hit, score a goal, you name it, he does it. He can provide some background scoring, play the PP, and the PK. Brad gives %110 every time he steps on the ice. Expect to see him on the 3rd line to bring the Flames energy and grit. Absolute great pickup for us here in Calgary, we expect to keep Brad in a Flames Jersey for a long time. Once again, thanks for coming out today."

                      FLAMES - 6

                      OILERS - 1

                      Game breakdown:

The Calgary Flames really took it to the Oilers in this one. They really came out flying and were hitting, shooting, and getting under the skin of the Oilers players, and even the fans. Rene Bourque had a goal and an assist, along with 2 big hits, both on former Flame Jarome Iginla. Matt Stajan netted a pair of late goals, while Taylor Hall picked up a helper in his Calgary, and NHL debut.
Cory Sarich was a menace, racking up 7 hits in the first game and sending Oilers forward Sam Gagner packing in the 2nd period with an elbow injury. Gagner did not return for the game. Flames excited to have their home opener Sunday against Los Angeles.`

                          Press Conference, October 29,2010

''I had confidence in this team at the start of the season, and they have proven to be quite the well-oiled machine. A 9-1-0 start is absolutely spectacular. We are sticking to our game plan and we are playing our rugged brand of hockey. We've been dishing out pain while burying pucks at the same time. Kipper is also having a great start to the season. At this point we don't see any needs in our roster, and we are comfortable with our pool of draft picks, and the cap space we have available. I can assure you NO RENTAL PLAYERS WILL BE BROUGHT IN we are going to build from within and keep everything homegrown. We want this team to mesh together and work out some good chemistry, eventually leading to a Stanley Cup. This project may only take a year to pay dividends, or it may take many, but rest assured, the Stanley Cup will return to Calgary before my stay is over. On a note for our on-ice line-up, we are going to be scratching Ratias Ivanans for the next few games as he is top in the league in PIMS, and is only causing disadvantages for us. I'm not blaming him, he's playing the right way, but he's a bit over the edge and can't keep himself in line. Sean Bergenheim will take over his duties on the 4th line, and David Moss will see time on the second PK unit. Sitting first in the league, we really like what we have going and our scoring lines will remain the same. Whether or not we continue this great stretch, let it be known I am proud of each and every player in this organization, and they are all working their arses off to get where we are. Thanks for coming out, have a nice day.''
