    Ottawa Senators: Army of Red

I am doing an Ottawa Senators Franchise to go along with my Calgary one. I have updated the rosters so that they match today's NHL and have simmed up to the Allstar Game.

The ingame Senators have nearly the exact record as the real life Sens posting a 28-19-5 record. The Senators sit 3rd in the Eastern Conference in a 3 way tie with Pittsburgh and Washington. Both Pittsburgh and Washington have played 4 and 3 games less respectively.

Within their own Northeast Division, The Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabers are 6 and 9 points behind the Sens. Toronto holds a 5 point edge over defending Stanely Cup Champions with 50 points to the Bruins 45 points.

The Boston Bruins are suffering huge from the infamous Stanely Cup hangover. They are the only team in the Northeast Division that has a sub .500 record.

When it comes to scoring leaders, the NHL goals leaders at the Allstar Break are none other than Alex Ovechkin with 31, and newcomer to the elite goal scorers is Loui Eriksson of the Dallas Stars. The assists leaders are Nicklas Backstrom who has been feeding Ovie all season and the estranged Ilya Kovalchuk with 42 assists each. They are followed closely by Kovalchuk's teamate Zach Parise with 40.

The Senators are led by none other than star centerman Jason Spezza who has 26G and 25A for 51 points on the season. He leads in goals and is chasing team leader in assists Filip Kuba who has 30.

Newcomer Kyle Turris is having a solid season posting 14G and 26A for a total of 40 points at the 52 game mark this season.

The Senators next game is in Boston against the Bruins.

Spezza, Karlsson, Michalek, Greening, and captain Alfredsson had a great weekend at the Allstar game but are all looking forward to the playoff push.

In other team news, GM Brian Murray stepped down after having some heart complications and the new interim GM is apprentice Nic Jenson of Ottawa. Nic has just recently graduated from the University of Ottawa in Business Management as well as Sport Management. Although being a young man at the age of 27, he has been a Sens fan since 1992 when the came to Ottawa. He will want nothing more than anyone in Ottawa, to see the Stanely Cup come to town.

I only liked Gilmour and Potvin, as for today's team....blah, they need to trade half their players away in order to be in the right area for a championship. My opinion though so don't hate.

                Up to the Deadline:

The Sens head into the trade deadline with a record of 33-25-5 and are top spot in the Northeast Division. They are 3rd in the Conference although tied with the Penguins with 75 points. The Pens have 2 games in hand over the Senators but the Senators hold a 4 point lead over the rival Habs who sit in 5th place with 71 points.

At this point, the Sens are looking to give up some offense and gain some grit heading into the postseason. Players on the trade block are Left Wing Nikita Filatov and Center Peter Regin.

Trade: C Corey Locke (74) to for C Lance Bouma (74) and a 2012 5th Round Pick (CGY)

Trade: C Zach Smith (80) to Colorado for C Jay McClement (82) and a 2012 5th Round Pick (COL)

Trade: LW Nikita Filatov (77) to Anaheim for LW Brandon McMillan (79) and a 2012 4th Round Pick (ANA)

Trade: RW Eric Condra (74) and a 2012 5th Round Pick (OTT) to Buffalo for RW Patrick Kaleta (80)

                End of Season:

The Sens went downhill after the deadline. Going 7-11 heading into their final game, they sit in 7th place ahead of the Buffalo Sabers. Both have claimed playoff spots but the Sens hold a 1 point lead with both teams playing tonight. The Habs finished the season strong and took the Northeast Division. The Sens have a record of 41-33-7 heading into tonight’s game vs. the New Jersey Devils who are in 3rd place. The Sens need the win to match what ownership wanted in 42 wins.

Ottawa vs. New Jersey 5-1 W

Sens meet expectations with interim GM Nic Jenson who has accepted a 2 year deal to remain with the team as President of Operations and GM.

The Senators finished in 6 place and will face the New York Rangers in the Conference Quarter-Final Round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Winning this round will ensure that Nic Jenson seems to know what he is doing as he has beefed up the bottom 6 with additions of Patrick Kaleta and Jay McClement.

Top Point getters for the Sens this year were:

                Jason Spezza – 37G 44A for 81 points
                Daniel Alfredsson – 29G 39A for 68 points
                Milan Michalek – 32G 35A for 67 points
                Kyle Turris – 20G 40A for 60 points
                Bobby Butler – 24G 32A for 56 points
                Nick Foligno – 27G 24A for 51 points

Round 1 vs. New York Rangers

Lose series 4 games to 1.
