Calgary Flames: The Restart (NHL 12 GM Mode)

Hey guys, due to my Oilers fantasy draft freezing, I have decided to boot up a new GM mode, this time, without a fantasy draft.

I've chosen the Flames, as I feel that they need to be blown up, they are not going to win with their current group. Surfing around HF Boards, a LOT of Flames fans agree that a rebuild is needed.

I've edited Bartschi to be a 74 ovr, B/B-/B, which I feel fairly reflects his real life ability, because he had a 2 PPG clip in the WHL this year. I have also edited some prospects for both the 2012 and 2013 drafts. I will sim the first season of the GM mode (which would be the season that was just played out IRL) and start from the draft. Hope you guys follow and enjoy

Re: Calgary Flames: The Restart (NHL 12 GM Mode)

Following a 37-29-16 season, in which the Flames missed the playoffs by 5 points, the organization has announced the firing of GM Jay Feaster. Earlier in his career, Feaster managed the Tampa Bay Lightning and captured the club's first Stanley Cup, but has been unable to recreate similar success in Calgary. The team has been stagnant for a few years now and has gone three years without the playoffs.

    Feaster had this to say:
I wish I could have stayed in Calgary a bit longer, as I have grown to love the city and would have liked to deliver a championship to the fans, but obviously ownership has a different vision and I'll accept that, I'll move on.
Within mere hours of the announcement, the Flames also declared that they have hired Dave Nonis as the new GM. A former GM of the Canucks, Nonis recently moved to Toronto to manage under Burke, and took over a strong role with the AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies. He joins a Flames club that appears to be in dis-array and needs a leader.

    Nonis had this to say:
I'm glad Calgary thought of me as a prime candidate, considering I used to be a member of the Canucks heh, but in all seriousness, I am very excited to get started in Calgary and I look forward to working with the club. Calgary is a great city and the fans deserve to have something to cheer about.
With new management settled, the team will enter the NHL draft in 3 days time, and Nonis will look to make his 1st draft a memorable one. The team still has a vacany at Head Coach, but Nonis says he "Has a guy".

Good luck with your Flames. Will there be a big overhaul in high tempo or do you go slow?

Well, I'll let you guys know I guess since I haven't updated in a while, coach has been appointed, etc. and there has been 1 big deal at the draft, maybe not the guy you're thinking but big.

As for the speed, I don't want to completely shred the team in just 8 months (ie 1 season) but would like to start turning the team into a winner ASAP.

              Nonis Brings in Coach

New Calgary Flames General Manager Dave Nonis has made his first hiring of the era era in Calgary, and it's now-former Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins.

              Nonis had this to say:

Dallas was definitely a guy we had high on our list and after we talked with him and had lengthy discussions and such, we decided that he as the guy we wanted going forward with the franchise.
Eakins is a native of Dade City, Florida, and was drafted 208th overall in the 1985 draft by the Washington Capitals. He played for a number of teams during his career, including the Winnipeg Jets, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues, Phoenix Coyotes, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, as well as the Calgary Flames.

Eakins was the coach for the Toronto Marlies this past 2011-2012 season, in which the team went 44-24-5-3, good for 96 points and 2nd in the Western Conference. Due to his success in the AHL, Dallas was primed for a shot at the big leagues and has one in Calgary.

              Eakins was reached for comments:

This is a big day for me, ya know, getting to finally coach in the NHL, it's a special honor and a special feeling. I'm really happy that my opportunity comes with the Flames and I can't wait to get started. Obviously this is a big hockey city and a great fanbase. I'm very glad to be apart of this franchise.
The announcement comes merely 2 days before the NHL Draft, where Calgary will look to continue their "healing" process.

                  2012 NHL Draft

Duthie: The 2012 Entry Draft had plenty of speculation leading up to it, and so far has not disappointed. We sit here now at the 14th pick awaiting Calgary Flames new GM Dave Nonis to come to the podium and make his first selection as the Manager of the Flames. Here he comes now.

Dreger: Sorry James, just need to interupt here, and the timing is kind of fitting as well, I have just received word that the Calgary Flames have traded goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2nd round pick in 2012, a 4th round pick in 2013, and F Richard Panik

Duthie: Wow huge news there, we knew the goalie market was going to be hot this offseason and Luongo was a big name on everybody's lists, but it looks like Tampa has gone with Kipper. Alright, here's Nonis now.

                  ------

Nonis: Ahem, with the 14th overall selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the Calgary Flames are extremely proud to select, from the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League, Brendan Gaunce.

McGuire: I really like this pick for Calgary. They're getting a big, strong, talented center that can take over and dominate games. They have lacked a real prescense in center ice and they look to pick it up here. With his big frame and strength, this kid could make the jump sooner than a lot of people think, I really like the selection.

McKenzie: Yes, I agree, they already have Sven Bartschi and Ryan Howse in the system, actually as well as newly acquired Richard Panik, and now they add Brendan Gaunce to the mix. This team has a nice group of forwards just waiting to break out now and this offense could be dangerous in a couple seasons.

                  Gaunce: C TWF 18y/o, 72 OVR, B POT (B/B-/B)
                  -------------------

                  Other picks:
Used the 2nd in the Kipper trade to pick up draft slider TWD Olli Maatta (17, 69 ovr, B- POT)
TWD Myles Bell (18, 72 ovr, B- POT)
RW TWF Joel Wigle (18, 69 ovr, B- POT)
LW PLY Brett Gustavsen (18, 69 ovr, B- POT)

Re: Calgary Flames: The Restart (NHL 12 GM Mode)

This is your TSN Update, and I'm Bryan Mudryk. On the eve of July 1st and thus Free Agency beginning in the NHL, our own Darren Dreger has tweeted and confirmed that the Calgary flames have pulled off a blockbuster deal with the Ducks. The trade sees D Jay Bouwmeester head to Anaheim in exchange for F Devante Smith-Pelly, F Kyle Palmieri, as well as Anaheim's 3rd and 7th round selections in the 2013 draft. We will now bring you statements via both GM's.

Nonis: When you take over a team that was in the situation that the Flames are, it's important to have patience. Of course, we want to make the playoffs every season, that IS our goal and remains our goal. Yet what we are also doing is looking 5 years down the road and trying to plan for then and making sure our team will be competitive then. Who knows where Jay will be in 5 years? In any case, we wish Jay luck with the Ducks.

Murray: This trade made sense for us, after dealing off Lubomir (Visnovsky) to the Islanders, we needed to fill the need for a real offensive D on our blue-line. Jay does that, and at 28, he is in prime. We give up a 3rd and 7th, always tough to lose depth in the draft, as well as two young forwards. Palmieri is a guy that we think could be a really good power forward in the league and is definitely a hard asset to part with. We felt that Devo (Smith-Pelly) just needed a change of scenery and wasn't fitting in all too well with us. We hope they both succeed and Calgary. Overall though we are very happy to have a player of Jay's caliber.

                      *Breakdown*
                      D Jay Bouwmeester 28 y/o, 85 OVR, C/C/C POT, 2 years @6.6 M

                      for

                      LW Devante Smith-Pelly 20 y/o, 74 OVR, B-/A-/B- POT, 3 years @680K
                      RW Kyle Palmieri 21 y/o, 77 OVR, B/B-/B- POT, 1 year @900K
                      ANA 3rd 2013
                      ANA 7th 2013

My thoughts: Bouwmeester is an overpaid 2nd pairing D-man. If developed correctly, Palmieri can become a good 2nd line PWF, and Smith-Pelly can be a heart and soul 3rd liner. I have good luck generally with late picks (See Myles Bell last draft) so a 3rd and 7th are actually of decent value to me.

I've tried to keep the deals fairly realistic, IDK if ANA would part with Palmieri IRL but he's pretty much the center piece of this trade. Bouwmeester has crazy value in this game so I could have easily gotten so much more but he's not really worth that.
