Re: Rocky Mountain High
Gabriel Lands a Hatty
Gabriel Landeskog is the youngest captain in the history of the National Hockey League, and he showed why he deserves it tonight.
The Predators took over 11 minutes to open up scoring at the Bridgestone Arena, when Brandon Yip scored on a slapper past Semyon Varlamov.
The Avs would take seven minutes to answer. Greg Zanon scored on a weak wrister through Pekka Rinne's five hole, with Gabriel Landeskog getting the secondary assist.
Although the Predators took the lead on a Rod Schremp deflection in the second period, the Avalanche answered back in the third, including Gabriel Landeskog's first career hat trick.
His first goal came thanks to a nice breakout pass from Milan Hejduk, which allowed Landeskog to split the D and deke out Pekka Rinne for a highlight reel goal. He was robbed of a natural hat trick by his own teammate, Jan Hejda, who received a drop pass from Matt Duchene in the high slot and sent a rocket past Rinne for the go-ahead goal.
Landeskog's second goal came in a similar fashion to his first. He took a pass off the boards behind the defenders and top-shelfed a backhand shot over Rinne's glove hand. His ultimate goal was a simple one, shooting one into an empty net with 22 seconds left.
When asked after the game how he felt after scoring his first career hat trick, the 19-year old Swedish winger replied, "This is the first time I feel as if I've done something in the NHL, and I get a couple nice souvenirs from it."
