Sabres' Playoff Hopes Dimmed As Hodgson Sidelined For 5 Weeks

Cody Hodgson and the Buffalo Sabres received possibly their worst news in a long while. Shortly after getting back Tyler Myers and Tyler Ennis from the IR, the Sabres lost 1st-line center Hodgson to an ankle sprain.

This will greatly diminish Buffalo's playoff chances, as Hodgson was having a breakout year. He also had good chemistry with Drew Stafford and Matt Moulson. His expected return is Feb 28.

This also keeps Steve Ott a Sabres at least until the trade deadline, as Tyler Ennis will move up to 1st-line center while Ott will retain second-center duties. Luke Adam will most probably be moved up to the second line.

Stellar Win In Chicago As Miller Makes 33 Saves
Ryan Miller only allowed one late, meaningless goal as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1. Miller was spectacular, and a goal from Patrick Kaleta (assisted by Steve Ott and Corey Tropp) followed by a Tyler Ennis goal (Moulson, Erhoff) nullified a late Brandon Saad goal. Tyler Myers scored the empty-netter (Porter) to put the Sabres at .500

Stafford Comes Up Huge As Sabres Beat Jets In OT
Drew Stafford fed Steve Ott on a goal in OT as Buffalo beat Winnipeg 4-3. Stafford also scored two 3rd-period goals to tie up the game. Tyler Ennis notched two assists for the Sabres, and Matt Moulson scored. Andrew Ladd scored twice for the Jets.


So, that's the end of January!! I'm gonna post my thoughts on the season so far, and going forward, soonish.

First off, let me start by saying that this team can win the Stanley Cup. Obviously we won't, but I think we can. All of the dominoes would need to fall into place: an injury or two to other superstars, Miller would have to play like he played the Chicago game, the offense would need to continue to click, the special teams would have to keep up. SO many needs.

Right now (February 1) we're in 6th place in the division. Not even a playoff spot yet. In the next month, a couple of guys' fates will be determined. If I sense that this team cannot make the playoffs, by March 5, Ott and Miller and maybe a couple of other guys will be out the door. For draft picks or players, I'm not sure.

The cup of youth is nearly overflowing: Hodgson, Ennis, Foglino, Adam, Porter, Tropp, Sceivour, Myers, McBain, Pysyk, Ruhwedel, and Larsson have already seen some NHL time this year. Most have spent the entire year there.

Girgensons, Zadorov, Ristolainen, McNabb, Grigorenko, Makarov, Armia, Sauve, Varone, and others still have yet to play.

END OF AN ERA

The Ryan Miller Era in Buffalo is over. Yes, it is over as of 2:43 PM on February the first.


Miller, LW (Big guy) John Scott, and the Los Angeles Kings' 2nd round pick in 2014 will be heading to Winnipeg to join the 5th-place Jets.
Coming to Buffalo is what's important in this deal: Evander Kane (22/86/4 Y), E. Pasquale (23/71/3.5 R) and the Jets' 2015 1st and 2nd round picks. That gives Buffalo 3 first round picks in 2015.

Miller (33/88/ 4.5 W) and his major contract is the main reason Buffalo jettisoned their shots at the playoff. Their best goaltender in Jose Theodore, a free agent earlier this season. But the dividends could be huge: Kane will be an immediate impact, Pasquale will back up, and no one evers scoffs at a 1st round pick.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are shopping long-time winner Martin St. Louis. They are asking for at least one high-level draft pick and a winger in return.

Trades
The St. Louis Blues have acquired Daniel Alfredsson from the Ottawa Senators for a second round draft pick and young center J. Hamilton.

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired Ed Jovanovski and Jose Theodore from the Florida Panthers for a second round draft pick in 2014, a second round draft pick in 2015, and Christopher Tanev.

I am very, very worried about Theodore. My backup goaltending, starting with Enroth if you've been following, has been terrible, and Theo actually only started well last game. Maybe I can get Ed Belfour out of retirement or something

I've thought about it, but it's not feasible when they want a second round pick. My team is too full of holes for sacrifice a 2nd for a possible, improbable, playoff spot.

Anyway, I'll be getting back to this soon (sometime this week). just started a baseball dynasty (check it out, its in my signature), and that coupled with reading bhurst99's Jays dynasty has me focusing on MLB for a bit.

Nope, not abandoning. Just been snowed under with work and upcoming tests (actually, that's partially a lie: I've been reading bhurst99 baseball dynasties, so...)
