A bit of backstory, setting up another plotline, and...

Ah, the draft. Is there any sweeter sound to a prospect's ear?

Every young hockey player dreams of hearing his name called. Going up to the podium, shaking Commisioner Bettman's—er, not that part. Putting your first NHL jersey over your head, putting on the cap and signing the contract.

      It's every player's dream.

Except players that have just recently lost 3-2 in game 7 of the WHL finals. Except players that have just missed the Memorial Cup.
Except players that the NHL has flagged and warned teams as a "red-flag pick."
      Except Josiah Cohen.

He'd had the interviews with teams, the drills, etc. But his mind was still back in Seattle, watching the clock expire and the Thunderbirds celebrate. He hated himself for looking back, yet he couldn't bring himself to look forward.

He sat at home, in Minnesota, with his younger brother Adam Cohen, a 16-year old PWF who had been drafted by the Portland Winterhawks. They'd spent most of their childhood together, Adam mounting rushes against his older brother, sometimes getting through, sometimes not. People said they were closer to each other than they were to their parents.

It was Adam who had first reached out to him after Game 7, Adam who had first awakened the real Josiah Cohen, not the one that had spent 3 days in his apartment playing Xbox360—all games but NHL 14.

Josiah knew he wasn't getting picked in the first round. He seriously doubted he would be picked in the second, though his agent had indicated that some teams were willing to overlook the red flags for the talent he possessed.

Speaking of his agent, Josiah's phone rang. He checked the caller ID: his agent [He woh shall not be named].

He shut off the phone and said to Adam, as he had so many times before, "Let's go out to the driveway for a 1v1."

Later that night, he checked his email... he had a "Welcome to the team" message from the GM of the...

After seven games in training camp, he'd made the NHL roster against all odds.
Third defensive pair, second powerplay unit.

He'd finally put his past failure behind him. His teammates were supportive, he was sharing an apartment with his brother who was drafted to the Quebec Remparts, life was good.

All that was left was to get on the ice for his first NHL regular-season game.

"Mr Cohen, what is going through your head before your first NHL game tomorrow."

"I'm excited. I've been waiting my whole career for this, and it's now a reality."

Josiah would have to wait a little longer than one night.
