Nice win against the Avs. Voracek=Scoreacek. :P

Interesting trade. Bartley is a solid 7th defenceman and I really like Gaustad's game. Should be interesting to see them play Philly hockey.

Sure sucks about losing Schenn for that long but hopefully Gaustad can fill the hole that Schenn leaves unless you plan on having Couts play there. Either way good luck!

van Reimsdyk Scores OT Winner, Leafs Win 3-2

James van Riemsdyk scored in Overtime and James Remier made 32 Saves to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 Win last night. The game was not without cost though as leading scorer Phil Kessel was rocked by a huge hit from Wayne Simmonds and is expected to miss 3-4 Weeks with a Separated shoulder.

Jake Voracek start the game off for the Flyers with a his 22nd of the season late in the 2nd after a goalie duel started the game off. David Booth would respond for the Leafs early in the 3rd as his shot took a very fortunate bounce off Braydon Coburn's stick and trickled between Mason's legs. Peter Holland made it 2-1 while the Leafs were on a delayed call.

The Flyers started to pour on the pressure but James Remier held strong until Matt Read won a puck battle and found Couturier in front for an easy tap in. Overtime was the same as the 1st with lots of big saves and back and forth action, until James van Riemsdyk would take advantage of a defensive miscommunication to slam home the winner.

Andrew MacDonald Traded to Tampa Bay

The Philadelphia Flyers have traded Andrew MacDonald to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 2015 1st Round pick. MacDonald led all Flyers defenseman in points was shocked about the trade. "I signed a long-term deal to stay here." GM Ron Hextall was rumored to be unhappy with the contract that former GM Paul Holmgren signed MacDonald to, but with MacDonald's recent play it drew some attention from other teams.

Flyers Powerplay Lights the Lamp, Couturier Nets Two

                No pic or video....

Usually a 5-Minute Powerplay doesn't score three goals in the five minutes, but that is just what the Flyers did en route to a 5-4 Win in Buffalo. Sean Couturier would net two of those powerplay while Matt Read added the third. "It was unreal, everything just clicked during our powerplay." Couturier said. Colby Armstrong and Vincent Lecavalier would score the other two goals in a 5-goal 2nd period. Buffalo would make things interesting by clawing back into the game, but the Flyers held on for a 5-4 Win. Sean Couturier, Matt Read and Vincent Lecavalier all had three points a piece for the Flyers while Chris Stewart would score twice for Buffalo.

Shea Weber Leads Comeback Over Flyers

The Flyers were mere seconds from winning it after rookie Scott Laughton scored his 1st NHL goal with 49 seconds left in the game, but Predators captain Shea Weber had other plans. The Predators defenseman known for his scorching slapshot scored the game-tying goal with 25 seconds left and then scored late in overtime during a Powerplay to lead the Predators to a 5-4 Win in overtime last night in Philadelphia.

The 1st period started off on the right foot for the Flyers as former Predator Paul Gaustad scored after a crisp pass from Zac Rinaldo, but multiple penalties late in the period cost the Flyers the lead. James Neal scored during a 5-on-3 with Pitkanen and Lecavalier in the box to tie it at one before Armstrong would take an interference call after colliding with Olli Jokinen. Shawn Thornton took offense and challenged Armstrong to a fight. Armstrong would win the fight, but Mike Ribeiro made that irrelevent as he scored off a Mason gaffe to give the Predators a 2-1 lead going into the 2nd period.

2nd Period was relatively quiet compared to the 1st. Sean Couturier would score his 17th of the season early on in the period, before Zac Rinaldo was hauled down on a breakaway(you read that correctly), but could not capitalize on the penalty shot.

All hell broke loose in the early moments of the third as Braydon Coburn would go after James Neal at the start of the period and Shawn Thornton would get in his 2nd fight of the night this time vs Zac Rinaldo. Eric Nystrom was the 1st one to capitalize on the momentum as he wired a wrister underneath Mason's pad to give the Preds the lead. Jake Voracek would score his 26th of the season after some hard work behind the net by Wayne Simmonds and a quick pass out front from Simmonds. Scott Laughton, recently called up after Brayden Schenn suffered an injury during the 4-2 loss to Columbus, scored his 1st NHL goal after a mad scramble in front of Pekka Rinne. The Flyers and Flyer Faithful thought that was the game, but a lost faceoff proved to be the undoing as Colin Wilson would win the faceoff and get the puck to the point where Shea Weber unleashed a cannon that handcuffed Steve Mason and tie the game with mere seconds to spare. Late in overtime, Vincent Lecavalier would get called for slashing after chopping Ryan Ellis' stick in half. And another faceoff loss cost the Flyers as Shea Weber would once again unleash a cannon that beat Steve Mason over the shoulder and give the Predators a 5-4 Win

Flyers Make Two Trade Deadline Trades

As the trade deadline approaches it is clear the Flyers aren't in the hunt for a playoff spot. Sitting at the bottom of the Metropolitan division with a 29-30-4 record and 10 points clear of the 8th seed New York Islanders, GM Ron Hextall had to make some moves to start the rebuilding process. With the two trades the Flyers get youth and picks in return along with cap space while the two teams the Flyers dealt fill big holes. Minnesota were lacking another Top 4 defenseman that can play with Ryan Suter and help push them further into the playoffs(currently 3rd in West) and that's just the hole that Braydon Coburn will fill. Anaheim(7th in West) needed a third line center and some scoring help and keep pace with Arizona(4 Points ahead).

Got younger and faster and freed up cap space. Plus opens a spot potentially next year for Laughton and Ghost Bear to have full spots if they develop

                              Time Skip!!!!

If you are so inclined to see the game-by-game results follow my Twitter(@FlyersBAGM) but here's the Season Recap

Despite trading away a lot of core players around the deadline, the Philadelphia Flyers almost squeaked into the playoffs. With four games remaining the Flyers needed to win out and Carolina needed to lose their remaining games, but cross-state rivals Pittsburgh Penguins took great joy in handing the Flyers a 5-1 Loss that all but punched the Flyers ticket to a full summer of golfing. Carolina's 3-0 win over Buffalo confirmed the Flyers were missing the playoffs for the 2nd time in three seasons posting a 41-36-5 record.
"It's disappointing for sure," Claude Giroux told the media after the Flyers finale, "You always come in with the goal of lifting the Cup, so to completely miss out on the post-season is tough. We knew this year would be tough, we're still growing as a team and as players. We'll be back in the post-season and I'll be damned if we don't lift that cup by the time my playing career is over." Though missing the playoffs is a big disappointment, the season had plenty of good things. Sean Couturier, the 8th Overall pick from the 2011 Draft who has been under the microscope the past few seasons for his lack of offensive scoring, broke out and set career highs with 30 Goals, 36 Asssists and 66 Points, good for 2nd on the team. Michael Del Zotto turned into the top pairing defenseman many thought he would be, and led the Flyers Defense with 34 Points. Wayne Simmonds and Jake Voracek both scored 30+ goals while captain Claude Giroux scored at a point-per-game pace.
The one rough spot in the Flyers lineup was goaltending as both goalies had difficulty keeping the puck out of the net, Mason had a 2.75GAA and Emery a 2.88GAA but that doesn't completely fall on their shoulders as the Flyers defense went through an on-the-fly overhaul with MacDonald, Grossmann and Coburn being dealt during the season. Mason failed to grab hold of the starting role and only played in 47 games(24-16-2) and that might not bode well for his future. His only saving grace is that the market doesn't look to be strong for goalies and Anthony Stolarz isn't ready to take the reigns in the NHL.
As far as the NHL, the New York Islanders raised Lord Stanley's Cup on the shoulders of John Tavares and a cinderella run and in dramatic fashion. First they upset Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in SIX GAMES, before taking down Alex Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals in a thrilling Seven game series then putting the Tampa Bay Lightning and Steven Stamkos away in six. In their way were the St. Louis Blues, who were the early favorites. Both teams went back and forth but it was the New York Islanders who came out on top in seven to life the Stanley Cup for the 5th time in their Franchise.
Pavel Datsyuk and Patrick Marleau announced their retirements and that leaves a big hole in Detroit and San Jose, respectively.

Connor McDavid Drafted by Buffalo, Two Major Deals Happen
The 2015 NHL Draft kicked off with the Buffalo Sabres picking Connor McDavid with the 1st overall pick and then it saw something that has never been seen before at any NHL Draft. 15 Goalies were selected in the 1st round, including six in the Top 10. "It was wild, I've never seen this happen." A scout told reporters. "Teams must have really taken a good hard look at goaltenders this season." (THANKS EA)

Two big trades went down before the 3rd pick was selected. The Florida Panthers traded Roberto Luongo to the Washington Capitals for the 18th Overall pick and Madison Bowey. The 2nd trade was the Detroit Red Wings trading Gustav Nyqvist and a 2015 2nd and 7th round picks to the Philadelphia Flyers for Brayden Schenn and 2016 3rd Round Pick. The Capitals were embarassed last season by the eventual Cup winners New York Islanders and would appear to have lost faith in Braden Holtby, while the Detroit Red Wings needed a center after Pavel Datsyuk called it quits. Brayden Schenn was the odd man out in the log-jam at center for the Flyers with Giroux, Couturier, Lecavalier and Scott Laughton and Schenn struggled as a winger last year. The move frees up a roster space for Scott Laughton or a winger, should Hextall go that route.
