NHL 15 : "Be a Coach" Youtube Series

    Hi all,
I'm doing a Youtube series, playing as GM/coach with the Blackhawks, just to try something different, then uploading highlights from each game, with added commentary.

I'm locking the position to CO, and then managing strategies and line changes in each game. Definitely a new experience.

You can find the first 12 sets of highlights here :

Hope you like it, I'm having a lot of fun doing these, at least

Thanks for the heads-up, and BTW excellent write-ups in the "Zack Kassian" dynasty thread, just spent 25 minutes in there, not even through page 1 yet.

Regular Season Game 21 - Blackhawks @ Canucks

Canucks Spoil Comeback, Best Blackhawks in OT.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into tonights NHL15 regular season game, looking to improve on a much critised effort against the Edmonton Oilers, on their current 6-game road trip.

However, the Vancouver Canucks super twins, Henrik and Daniel Sedin seemed eager to throw a wrench in those plans. 5 minutes into the first period, with the Blackhawks shorthanded, Daniel Sedin put a puck right on the stick of a streaking Dan Hamhuis, who beat Frederik Andersen in the Blackhawks net, with a low wristshot, stick side.

Later in the first, Daniel Sedin was at it again, this time teaming up with Radim Vrbata and his brother Henrik Sedin. Blackhawks Brian Bickell put a pass right on the stick of Henrik Sedin camped in the right circle. His initial shot was saved, but Daniel retrieved the loose puck, laid it off to Radim Vrbata, he found a wide open Henrik Sedin in the slot who had no trouble beating Andersen low, glove side.

The 2-0 score stood less than two minutes. Blackhawks Duncan Keith had his initial shot stopped by Ryan Miller in the Vanvouver net, but Kris Versteeg picked up the rebound, and put the puck right on the stick of Brad Richards camped in the slot, beating Miller high.

The Blackhaws eventually tied the game halfway through the third period, as Ben Smith went to pick up an errand pass in the corner. He put a quick pass right on the stick of Jonathan Toews, parked all alone in front, on a play where Ryan Miller perhaps should've been a little more aggressive.

Just as the game seeming was headed to a shootout, the Blackhawks found themselves on the wrong end of the calls once again. With less than a minute to play in OT, Nick Bonino had his initial shot blocked, but picked up the puck on a broken play in the slot, and sent a rising shot past Frederik Andersen, for a 3-2 Canucks OT win.

Regular Season Game 23 - Blackhawks @ Ducks

Blackhawks Hold Off Ducks' Rally For Win

Fifth game of a 6-game roadtrip for the Chicago Blackhawks took them to California to faceoff against the struggling Ducks, and former starting goaltender, Corey Crawford.

Crawford did not have the best of nights, as after a scoreless period, the Blackhawks exploded with four unanswered goals in the second.

Marin Hossa took advantage of a passive Ducks defense, as he was able to walk in from his left wing position. Crawford stopped the initial shot, but Hossa was able to retrieve the rebound and put it by the Anaheim goaltender.

Moments later, the Blackhawks Patrick Kane stole the puck away at his own blueline, and went down the ice on a 2 on 1 with Marian Hossa. He sent a cross-ice pass to Hossa who had no trouble beating Crawford 5-hole from close range.

Later in the period, Patrick Kane again played setup guy, this time to Jonathan Toews. With the Anaheim Ducks a man short, Kane picked up a loose puck in the corner, after defenseman Nick Leddy's shot went wide. He sent a quick pass in front to Jonathan Toews, who beat Crawford with a blistering one-timer, glove side.

Things were going to get worse for the Ducks though. Brandon Saad didn't get much on a shot, but Corey Crawford was unable to control the rebound, and Bryan Bickell was quick to tuck it between Crawfords pads, for a 4-0 lead.

The Ducks regrouped however, and before the period was done, Andrew Cogliano had cut the lead to three. After a shift of extended pressure in the Chicago zone, the puck came in front to Cogliano, who beat Andersen with a rising one-timer from the slot.

The goal seemed to spark the reeling Ducks, as they came out strong for the third period. Ryan Getzlaf finished off a perfect passing play from Lindholm and Corey Perry, and cut the lead to two.

The Ducks would cut into the lead yet again, as Matt Beleskey took the puck behind the net, he threw a blind pass back out in front for Emerson Eatem, who beat Andersen stickside from the right circle.

And just as one might expect the Blackhawks to collapse completely, Ben Smith took matters into his own hands. He chased down a puck dumped behind the Anaheim net, beating a Ducks defenseman to the loose puck, immediately put it in front, directly on the stick of Peter Regin, who fired a low wrister by Crawford, stick side, for the 5-3 win.

Regular Season Game 24 - Blackhawks @ Kings

Raanta Blanks Kings, Hawks Stay Hot.

Blackhawks goalie Antti Raanta got the start in this second game of a back-to-back series, taking the Blackhawks the short trip from Anaheim, where they beat the Anaheim Ducks yesterday, to the Staples Center, home of the Los Angeles Kings.

Chicago didn't seem hampered by the fact that they played yesterday, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period. Brandon Saad curled behind the net and put a pass in the slot for Brian Bickell, who beat Jonathan Quick with a low wristshot.

Kings came back with some pressure of their own, but Raanta kept Los Angeles off the board heading into the intermission, with a great post-to-post move on Kings Clifford, parked at the far post.

Blackhawks made it 2-0 in the second, on a hustle goal by Kris Versteeg. Versteeg's initial shot from the slot went wide, and as Bobby Ryan was checked off the puck heading to the net, Versteeg managed to dig it free, and put home his own rebound.

Brad Richards made it 3-0 in the third, scoring on a nice forehand move on a breakaway. LA Kings defenseman Jeff Schulz fanned on a shot at the Blackhawks' blueline, and the puck slid directly to Richards who was coming off the bench, and streaking in alone on Quick he did not falter.

Regular Season Game 25 - Blues @ Blackhawks

Surging Blackhawks Beat Slumping Blues on Late Goal

The red hot Chicacgo Blackhawks hosted the slumping St. Louis Blues in what, on paper, should’ve been an easy win for the home team.

Things started out right according to plan, Marian Hossa took the puck across the blueline, and while his linemates headed off on a change, he went around two Blues players, and fired a shot that Brian Elliot couldn’t keep out, despite him getting a big piece of it.

The Blues weren’t late in their response though, as Ryan Reaves managed to sneak behind the Blackhawks defense, and fired home an inch-perfect pass from Porter. Blackhawks goaltender Frederik Andersen got a piece of the shot, but not enough to keep it from trickling over the line.

The score remained tied until midway through the second period. Marcus Kruger won an offensive zone draw, by muscling Steve Ott off the faceoff dot. Bryan Bickell retrieved the puck, fired a quick wrister on net, that Brian Elliot got his glove on but couldn’t hold and Brandon Saad had no trouble tucking in the puck, as it lay in the crease behind Elliot.

The Blues didn’t play like a slumping team, and took the game to Chicago for long stretches of time. It finally paid off with 1.38 remaining in the second period, as Patrik Berglund put home a big rebound off a Paarjarvi shot, that Andersens defense were unable to clear.

As it often happens with a slumping team, concentration has a way of failing at the most crucial of times. With less than 15 seconds remaining in regulation, Bryan Bickell had the puck on the wing in the Blues zone, he managed to throw a pass in front for Marcus Kruger, who managed to muscle off the Blues defenseman. Elliot made the initial save, but Kruger had no trouble putting home the rebound for a 3-2 Chicago Blackhawks win.

Regular Season Game 26 - Canadiens @ Blackhawks

                            Blackhawks Outlast Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens visited the Chicago Blackhawks in a game between two teams, with very similar records.

The Canadiens started out the better team, but it was the Blackhawks who got on the board first. Three minutes into the first period, Brad Richards played a give and go with defenseman Johnny Oduya, opening up space for Richards to go to the net, but instead of taking the shot himself, he sent the puck to Bobby Ryan who had snuck in at the far post, for an easy tap-in for a 1-0 lead.

The Canadiens continued to put the Blackhawks under pressure though, and halfway through the first period they were rewarded, as Travis Moen sent a pass back to the point for Andrei Markov. He fired a slapshot with Michael Bournival camped in front of the net, who deflected the puck into the corner, with no chance for Andersen in the Chicago goal.

The Canadiens eventually took a 2-1 lead in the second period. Tom Gilbert’s shot from the high slot was stopped by Andersen, but as defenseman Michal Roszival tried to clear the rebound behind his own goal, his stick got tangled up with Canadiens forward Travis Moen in front, and the puck trickled between Andersen’s pads and into the net, instead.

With 5 minutes remaining in regulation, the Blackhawks struck back with a dirty goal of their own. Chicago defenseman Nick Leddy fired a rising slapshot from the point that Price got a piece of, but Marian Hossa went to retrieve the loose puck behind the net and went to the net with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews crashing the net as well. Kane took a swipe at the loose puck that Price saved, but Toews picked up the rebound, and put it in on the backhand.

With no further score in regulation or OT, the game was eventually decided through a marathon shootout in which Andersen and Price took turns in frustrating shooters. Brad Richards scored the winning goal on his round 9 attempt, after Andersen had stopped Travis Moen previously.

Andrei Markov and Tom Gilbert scored for the Canadiens, while Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad also connected for the Blackhawks.

Blackhawks defenseman Johnny Oduya left the ice during the 1st period after a particularly hard check delivered by Canadiens defenseman, Alexei Emelin. He did not return.

Regular Season Game 27 - Blackhawks @ Predators

Blackhawks Hossa Stun Preds in OT

The Nashville Predators hosted the Chicago Blackhawks, in a game between two western conference powerhouses. The season series was tied at one before the game, with each team winning in the other teams building earlier in the season.

The game was played with an emphasis on defense, but the Predators eventually drew first blood, as James Neal scored on a PP, late in the first period. Shea Weber’s shot from the point was blocked in front, but Mike Ribeiro retrived the puck, and put a quick shot on net that Andersen saved, but the puck fell directly to James Neal parked in the left circle, who put the puck in the net via a sprawled Andersen’s right pad.

The lead lasted less than minute. As Blackhawks Ben Smith was checked off the puck in the Nashville zone. The puck squirted into the slot for Peter Regin, who fired a quick shot that Rinne stopped, but Andrew Shaw charged to the net, and put home the rebound.

With no score in the second and third periods, the decision came on a Marian Hossa goal with less than a minute remaining in OT. As Marcus Kruger lost the puck at the Predators blue line, it came to Nick Leddy at the right point, who took a couple of quick strides into the slot. But instead of taking the shot himself, he sent a no-look pass to Marian Hossa at the top of the right circle, who fired a low wrist shot past Rinne, stick side for the gamewinner.
