Breaking Through!! A Ottawa Senators Be a GM

    Breaking Through

Since there formation in 1992 the Senators have almost been a mainstay in the Playoffs. After not making the Playoffs in there first four season of existence they have been in them 15 of the last 19 years, but like the San Jose Sharks they may be great in the regular season that hasn't translated to winning in the postseason.

    New GM Ready to Win

The Senators have made unknown Matt Weber as the teams new GM. "I was surprised to get a call and get a chance to sit and chat with owner Eugene Melnyk. I told him I do think this team can win now but i also sold him on my idea of how to keep depth in your system to have success year after year. The Detroit Red Wings are successful every year but why. Because they are always grooming there star players replacement. When Yzerman or Lindstom retired they already had the guys ready to replace them so they would not miss a beat. I plan on getting quantity in the draft and developing that talent so if i have to make a tough decision to let someone go I know we will be able to recover right away." said Weber.

The owner most have liked what he heard because by the time the meeting was over with Weber was just waiting for the contract to be written up.

    First Move already for Weber

Weber made his mark early with the trade of Borowiecki to the Jets for a (16) 5th round pick

That trade was to get a pick but also to free up the contract space needed to sign Alexander Semin. Semin gives the Senators just a little more offence.

Now that moves have been made the team is looking forward to the start of what is hoping to be a playoff year with a road game against the Sabres.

Every year I pick other teams but in the end I always end up in Ottawa being the Senators. I can't be my bruins because I'm too attached to the players. But for some reason I like the senators on the game.

Two Big Injuries Haven't Derailed The Hot Start

The Senators started the season off with a dominating performance against Buffalo with a 6-2 victory. Alexander Semin was big in that game with 2 goals and 2 assists in his first game with the Senators. "I felt good out there tonight. Everything was working for me and us as a team and I hope we can take this high that we have right now to Toronto on Saturday." Semin told reporters after the game.

Toronto things got ugly and it started with a boarding call that sent Mark Stone out with a concussion. After that it was big hit after big hit and three times a fight broke out. Ottawa was lucky to escape with the win as Semin got the game winning goal with less than 30 seconds left in the third period.
This is what rivalry looks like said Weber after the game. We hate them and they hate us.

The rest of the month seemed to be going great for Ottawa until Phaneuf sprained his MCL and the team got word that Stone would not be medical cleared and is still suffering from post concussion symptoms.

"When we are dealing with a head injury like the one that Stone suffered you have to play the cautious approach and not try to rush him back before he is ready. Yea we could use him but we will not risk his long term health to have him back sooner."

After two huge back to back wins against the Detroit Red Wings (5-2 and 5-1) the Senators finished the month with a 7-3-1 record to start November Ottawa sits third in the division behind Tampa and Florida.

Semin finished the month leading the team in points (13). Turris lead in goals (7) and Karlsson lead in assists (8)

Goaltending Anderson was kinda bad with a 4-3 record .897S% and a 3.01GAA
              Hammond was a lot better going 3-0-1 with a .932S% and a 1.960GAA

Next game on November 3rd against the Montreal Canadians who gave the Senators there first loss of the year (4-1)

                Another Strong Month for Ottawa

The Senators started the month off with two impressive wins, a 3-0 shutout of Montreal and a 4-1 dominating performance against the Jets. Everything seems to be working with the teams offense and the Anderson seems to be hitting his stride in goal as the Senators finished the month 7-3-2.

In a loss to the Canucks the team lost big part of there offence when Semin went down with a Neck Sprain and the time table is he will not be back until middle of December at the soonest. Stone is still having trouble with his post concussion syndrome and its looking like could be out the rest of the year to recover which would be a big blow to the teams Stanley Cup hopes.

Game of the month happened on the 16th verses Detroit. The Red Wings had previously lost two games back to back against Ottawa by a combined 10-3. Howard looking to recover and get a little pride back against the team that is just destroying him this year and after 2 periods it looked a little better for him as he had 26 saves and only gave up 2 goals. Problem was that was the only goals scored of the game. With a 2-0 lead heading into the final period most fans thought they would just pack it in and kinda take the foot of the gas. That was anything but the case as they keep going at Howard hard and Detroit had no answer for them. When the dust settled the final score was another embarrassing 5-1 win for the Senators. That now makes it 15-4 in Ottawas favor as the teams will meet two more times this year.

                Turris 20points (10G 10A)

Up and Down month for the Senators

Ottawa could never seem to get a good roll going all month. Winning a couple in a row and then following that up with losing a couple in a row. They finished the month with a 8-5-1 December. Ottawa had its first three game losing streak of the season as they lost to the sharks (7-5), Lightning (4-1), and panthers (6-3).

Ottawa did manage to end the month on a nice three game winning streak with two wins against boston in which they outscored them 7-2. Senators also ended the month with the most goals scored by a team in a game all year. Senators defeated the Devils by a score of 9-3. A game in which we seen Karlsson find the back of the net 4 times and push his season total to 16 goals (36 points total).

                  Turris 38Pts. (16G 22A)
                  Karlsson 36pts (16G 20A)
                  Semin 31pts (15G 16A)
                  Zibanejad 30 (11G 19A)

                  Craig Anderson 15 W 9L .911S% 2.690GAA

The Senators sit just two points behind the lightning for first place in the division, the conference, and the league.

                  Race for Presidents Trophy standings
                  Predators 50pts
                  Lightning 50pts
                  Stars 49pts
                  Kings 48pts
                  Senators 48pts
                  Blues 48pts
                  Canadians 48pts
                  Blackhawks 47pts

January sees Ottawa open the month with the Blackhawks followed up the next night with the Blues (Both teams withing 3 points of leading the league in pts). Senators will be going into the games without there center Zibanejad as he fractured his jaw in the win against the Devils. Still know word on whether Stone plays anymore this season.

Can the Senators Win their Second Presidents Trophy In franchise History

In what was a huge month for the Senators going 9-3-0 they got two big wins against two top 7 teams in the NHL.

The Senators started the month off with the Blackhawks. Down by one with only 35 seconds left in the third Ottawa pulls there goalie to get the extra attacker. With 4 sec left Karlsson swings a pass to Smith who puts it in the back of the net to tie the game up. Neil would put in the game winner in overtime to get the Senators off to a could start of the month. Before those two goals Smith and Neil had a combined 12 goals on the month so for them to score there was completely out of the blue.

Senators would go on to go 3-2 before they got the biggest news of season so fair. The return of Mark Stones. It must have triggered Kill mode in the Senators as they got a goal and an assist from stone and Bobby Ryan gets a hat trick in a 5-3 win over the kings.

Since stones return the Senators finished the month 5-1 winning there last 4 games.

So what does the Race for the best team in the League look like

                    Kings 67pts
                    Predators 67pts
                    Lightning 66pts
                    Senators 66pts
                    Avalanche 63pts
                    Blackhawks 63pts
                    Red Wings 62pts

                    Kyle Turris 44pts (17G 27A)
                    Erik Karlsson 43pts (22G 21A)
                    Bobby Ryan 43pts (16G 27A)
                    Mike Hoffman 42pts (11G 31A)
                    Alexander Semin 37 pts (18G 19A)

Re: Breaking Through!! A Ottawa Senators Be a GM

Big February for Senators and even Bigger Trade

The Senators all but should the NHL that they are the team to beat as the team went 11-2 and outscored there opponents 48 goals scored to 16 goals against. There was a stretch in the middle of the month where for one week they had three shutouts in wins over Buffalo, Carolina, and Detroit. Detroit and Howard's hell season came to an end this month as Detroit was shut out twice to Ottawa and pushed there goal differential against Ottawa to -17 (Ottawa 21Goals- Detroit 4) in the five meetings they had in the regular season.

BIG Trade a week before the deadline sends Ottawa Zdeno Chara for disgruntled Mark Fraser, Unsigned Center Chlapik, and two future picks.

A number pairing of offensive D-man Karlsson and Chara is going to wreak havoc on the league.

If that wasn't enough to bolster there defense the team made one more deal on the day of the deadline after getting word that Wiercioch suffered a head injury in there last game.

Mark Stone was excited when he got the call from older brother Michael had been traded from Arizona to Ottawa to add depth there defense. Phillips was upset after the Chare deal knocked him out of the top 6 and he was scratched.

Weber had this to say about the Phillips trade, "I can see why he was angry but the way he was playing we needed to make a move to improve our defensive lines and at his age he wasn't going to dress anymore without an injury to one of our regulars. When he came at me with an attitude I knew it was time to make a move because I didn't want him becoming a cancer in the locker room. So I looked at Arizona and they had the player I was looking at all season in Stone."

                      The full trade was
Ottawa gets: Stone and grinder Boyd Gordon (depth purposes)
Arizona gets: Phillips, Englund and 2 future 6th round picks

The Race for the presidents cup looks to be a race from only 4 teams now

                      Senators 88pts 42-17-4
                      Kings 85pts 40-17-5
                      Lightning 84pts 40-18-4
                      Flyers 82pts 37-17-8

Hoffman took the lead on the team in points on the year with 57 (12 G 45A)
Karlsson 56pts (25G 31A) Leads team in goals
                      Ryan 54 pts (22G 32A)
                      Turris 54 pts (22G 32A)
                      Zibanejad 52 pts (22G 30A)
                      Semin 46 pts (23G 23A)

                      Anderson has a 27-14 record .919S% and 2.340GAA

March opens with a tough two weeks as they host St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Toronto and play road games in Toronto, Carolina, and Florida
(No particular order after St. Louis and Tampa Bay.)

The trade for Chara was more cuz Boston was doing terrible and he is my favorite player in real life. At an 88 overall he can still make a huge impact on the game

38 and I believe he retires after the first year. The trade was mostly to get ride of Fraiser since he was pissed off and his overall dropped like 8 points. He was a cancer in the locker room and the picks are far enough into the future that they are meaning less at this point in time. But what I gained is a solid first line defender with an insane slap shot to play next to karlsson.

Senators End Regular Season on the top of the League

The Chara trade worked out exactly how they wanted it too and gave Ottawa an almost unstoppable defense for teams to try to score on. It even made Karlsson even more dominate as his assists total shot up as he kept feeding the powerful Chara slap shot.

Turris lead the team with 80 points on the year but it was a balanced team as 7 players finished with over 50 points, 6 over 60, 3 players or 75 points. That scoring helped the Senators to the best offensive team in the league scoring 3.354GFPG first in the league. There defense was something to be feared of too as they first second only giving up one more goal then the flyers for fewest goals against and a 2.256 GAPG.

The team finished with a record of 56-19-7 for 119 points while the flyers were in second for the presidents trophy with 109 points (flyers finished 2nd in Goals scored and first in goals Against)
