The Old Meets the New | NHL 20

    NHL discovers reanimation procedure

NEW YORK — In a move that shocked even the most radical medical scientists today, the National Hockey League announced it had discovered a way to reanimate players — or to rejuvenate them.

The result? Each team will have two legends from its past join the roster for at least the 2019–20 season.

The process is simple. Beginning with the highest-rated players, the league will move down the list of pre-identified legends and assign them to teams based on which franchise hosted them for the greatest number of games.

Every franchise will receive one offensive player and one defensive player. Goalies will be used as a last resort and in a lottery for legends-less teams.

If a player has played the most number of games in his career with one team, but that team already has a player in that position, then he will be assigned to the team for which he played the second most games.

Because some franchises don't have any legends, or any legends the game rates above an 86 overall, they will receive one or two players from a pool created of legends from Original Six teams.

    The results:

    Anaheim Ducks:
    O Teemu Selanne

I'm going to play this through the perspective of the Penguins, but I'll be more than glad to answer questions about how any player/team is doing.

Penguins Shore Up Roster Before Season

PITTSBURGH — One of the Penguins' strengths heading into the 2019–20 NHL season is depth.

It's also one of their key weaknesses.

To reduce the hit of some players against the team's salary cap allocation, the Penguins made a few roster moves to give the team some financial flexibility.

On Monday, Pittsburgh traded defenseman Jack Johnson, who signed a controversial five-year contract prior to the last season, to the Ottawa Senators. In return, the Penguins will receive winger Tyler Ennis, Ottawa's fourth-round draft pick in 2020, the Tampa Bay lightning's fifth-round pick in 2020 and a sixth-round 2020 pick, originally held by the St. Louis Blues.

Johnson provided some value to the Penguins in 2018-19, but GM Jim Rutherford found it wasn't enough to hold onto the aging defenseman for another four seasons.

Ennis just signed with the Senators, but for Toronto in the 2018 season he scored 18 points, including 12 goals, in 51 games. Coach Mike Sullivan said Ennis would likely start the season on the third line.

Of course, the Penguins' depth extends to offense, too. That's why they followed Monday's move on Tuesday by dealing center Nick Bjugstad to Las Vegas.

The Pens acquired Bjugstad last season, and he provided the team with 14 points in his 32 games with Pittsburgh. His cap hit coming into the season was $4.1 million.

Vegas will send to Pittsburgh winger Brandon Pirri, their 2020 third-round pick and New Jersey's 2020 third-rounder.

Jared McCann will fill the center role on the third line.

With the amount of cap space the Penguins received as a result of these two trades, they made a small signing, acquiring defenseman Dion Phaneuf on a one-year, $750,000 deal. Sullivan said he doesn't yet know which defensive pair Phaneuf will join.

The team additionally has another $5 million in cap space to deal with as they please.
