Penguins acquire F Anthony Duclair from Senators

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Pittsburgh Penguins have always had a penchant for loading up on even more talent despite running the league. In 2008, the talented team that featured a 20-year old Sidney Crosby fresh off an MVP-caliber season while a 21-year old Evgeni Malkin was in the midst of challenging Alex Ovechkin for one of his own, traded with the Atlanta Thrashers to acquire Marian Hossa for a playoff run.

The next season, they picked up the likes of Chris Kunitz and Bill Guerin on their way to their first Stanley Cup in the Crosby/Malkin era.

Fast-forward, and the Penguins - head and shoulders the best team in the league - decided to make a trade for a fresh new face: Anthony Duclair.

The Penguins announced this morning that they have traded forward Brandon Tanev and a first-round draft pick in the 2021 to the Ottawa Senators for forward Anthony Duclair.

Tanev, 28, was signed by the Penguins away from the Winnipeg Jets to a six-year deal worth $21 million but has mostly seen his role diminished despite the Penguins being an offensive juggernaut. He's only participated in 25 games with a series of healthy scratches. He's accumulated 2 goals and 2 assists.

Duclair, 24, has already played for a number of teams in his relatively short career. Originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, he has since played for the Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Columbus Blue Jackets. He's dealt with some injury issues this season, scoring 12 goals and 12 assists in 35 games played for the terrible Senators.

Duclair is currently set to be a free agent at the end of the season, but General Manager Jim Rutherford has assured Pens hopeful that Duclair is not simply a rental and a contract extension is something he hopes to accomplish.

The Penguins clear some much-needed cap space, as they have reportedly been in talks for an extension with pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Justin Schultz.
