CANES RALLY LATE TO BEAT SENS
December 31st, 2021
In their last game for 2021, the Senators were hoping to keep up the momentum of their Shootout Win. Unfortunately, Craig Anderson was a late scratch and Anders Nilsson got the nod instead.
Playing for the Swedish netminder, who has struggled all season, the Senators came out and played solid hockey. Outplaying the Canes, the Sens notched a Powerplay Goal midway through the 1st when Chris Tierney going hard to the net redirects a rebound for his 3rd Powerplay Goal of the season.
Carolina got back into the game on a Faulk blast from the Blueline which handcuffs Nilsson. The Sens manage to battle back with a fortunate bounce, after a Wellmore shot missed the net and came back off the end boards and right to Bobby Ryan with a wide open net as Reimer was way out of position.
The Sens spent the rest of the period, battling on the Penalty Kill, as the refs called 5 consecutive penalties on the team. The Canes would end the game going 1 for 9 and the Sens 1 for 6.
Dougie Hamilton notched his fourth goal of the season, as he caught the Sens on a bad line change and carried the puck into the zone and rifled a snap shot blocker side high on Nilsson. At 9:23 in the third, Wellmore would take Slavin hard into the boards, with a questionable hit. Wellmore was accessed a Game Misconduct and Slavin was seen leaving the bench to go to the dressing room.
While killing the five minute major, Zaitsev attempting to carry the puck out of his own zone, would get stripped by Aho, who was able to walk in and snipe a shot five hole on Nilsson putting them ahead late in the game. The Canes almost scored on the empty net with time winding down, but Chabot somehow dove and deflected it wide with his stick.

Sebastian Aho scored the game winner on the Powerplay after stripping Zaitsev of the puck for his 15th goal of the season as the Canes down the Sens 3-2.
