Lightning Lose 5 In Waiver Draft; Pickup Enforcer Stu Grimson

Tampa - Ahead of the start of the regular season, the Lightning had a league high 5 players selected in the draft. Center Michel Mongeau was taken by Calgary, Center Marc Bureau was selected by Edmonton, LW Chris Kontos was taken by New Jersey, D Peter Taglianetti was taken by Vancouver, and with the last pick in the draft the Ottawa Senators took RW Steve Tuttle.

"We hate to lose anyone, let alone 5 of our guys. We had high hopes for all of them." General Manager Phil Esposito said.

Meanwhile, the team selected LW Stu Grimson from Chicago. Known as The Grim Reaper, Grimson (6'4 and 240 lbs) is a known enforcer, racking up 439 PIMS in 93 games played.

"Stu plays with an edge that we like. The fans will surely love him, as he is not afraid to get his nose dirty sticking up for his teammates." Head Coach Terry Crisp said.

The Edmonton Oilers lost 4 defensemen in the draft, after San Jose took Craig Muni with the first pick in the draft. The Quebec Nordiques then followed up by taking Brian Glynn with the second overall pick. The Oilers also lost Jeff Bloemberg (Buffalo) and Marc Laforge (Boston)

Six goalies were taken in the draft. Bruce Racine went from Pittsburgh to Hartford, Toronto took Kay Whitmore from Vancouver, Winnipeg selected Markus Ketterer, Chicago selected Corrie D'Alessio from Hartford, Pittsburgh followed by taking Brian Hayward from San Jose, and then Montreal took Jarmo Myllys from Toronto.

The regular season begins tomorrow night as the Chicago Blackhawks come into town to take on the Bolts.

Lightning Win First Game In Dramatic Fashion; Down Chicago 7-6

Tampa - 9,570 fans witnessed history inside The Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds as the Tampa Bay Lightning won their first game, in their first ever regular season game. If people doubt that the city of Tampa wouldn't be able to produce any hockey fans, Tuesday's game provided enough excitement for fans to come back, as 13 goals were scored.

"I was born and raised in Boston and moved down to Tampa a few years ago, so I already loved hockey." said local resident Hank Broadwater, wo brought his 6 year old son Jeremy to see his first ever game.

"I love it!! It was so much fun." said the six year old.

Indeed, if Tampa wants to build it's fanbase, they will have to lean hard on the "Snow Birds" who have moved down to the Sunshine State to help build up and educate the locals.

"If we can play like we did tonight and keep that level of excitement, built in with the fact that we plan to really reach out to the community, we feel that hockey in Tampa will be sustainable." said Director Of Scouting and c0-founder Tony Esposito.

After the pageantry of Opening Night, it looked like the team might be in trouble early on, as Dirk Graham scored within the first minute of play. However with the Lightning on the powerplay, Brian Bradley found Mikael Andersson in the slot, who blasted the puck past Ed Belfour, scoring the first ever regular season goal.

After Jeremy Roenick tripped Rob Zamuner, the Lightning went back on the powerplay. Dirk Graham would strike again, intercepting an errant Doug Crossman pass, and scored a shorthanded goal on Wendell Young.

Down 2-1, and just giving up a heartbreaking shorthanded goal, Doug Crossman would get a measure of revenge by scoring the tying goal with 30 seconds remaining on the Roenick penalty.

The Lightning would get it's first lead in the game, as Igor Larionov would find himself all alone in the Chicago zone, and wristed a shot past Ed Belfour, giving the team a 3-2 lead.

However, the Black Hawks would quickly strike back, and tie the game 3-3 after a goal by Brent Sutter.

As the First Period was winding down, Chicago Defenseman Igor Kravchuk would take a penalty, and Mike Hartman scored on the ensuing powerplay, giving the Lightning a 4-3 lead as the period ended.

That was all Chicago needed to see of Goalie Ed Belfour, who didn't return in net once the second period began. Belfour let in 4 goals on the Lightning's first 12 shots.

"Anytime you can get the other team to switch out a Goalie the caliber of Belfour, you've been doing something right." said Head Coach Terry Crisp.

With 3 first period powerplay goals, the Lightning's biggest strength in the preseason continued to have success.

"Cash (Assistant Coach Wayne Cashman) has been doing a great job coaching up the powerplay units." Crisp said.

With their starting Goalie pulled, Chicago tightened their game up in a second period where no goals were scored. It wasn't for a lack of trying on Tampa's part, but backup Goalie Corrie D'Allesio made a couple of slick glove saves on Brian Bradley and Tim Bergland, respectively.

At the top of the third period, Tampa Center Adam Creighton was able to get a puck past D'Alessio, giving the team a 2 goal lead.

The Black Hawks didn't back down, and quickly tied the game up with goals by Adam Bennett and Robert Reichel.

"We could've been easily demoralized at that point, but one things for sure, we won't ever just pack it in." said RW Danton Cole, who scored in the middle of the period, giving the Lighting a 6-5 lead.

With the 9 thousand fans pumped, sounding more like 15 thousand, the winds were let out of their sails as Brian Noonan tied the game up late in the period.

With the prospect of going to overtime, Mike Hartman struck again late in the period, scoring the go-ahead goal.

"Harty was clutch tonight. He did it to end the first, and in the third. He was amazing." said Center Brian Bradley, who had 3 assists himself.

"We just have to continue with this momentum." Bradley added.

The Lightning will have the next two nights off before they play their next game, travelling to Minnesota to take on the North Stars.

Shut Out In Minnesota; Lightning Lose 4-0

Bloomington - Coming off their first win as a franchise, the Lightning traveled to Minnesota and suffered their first ever loss when they got shut out by the North Stars.

"Our fight back wasn't there tonight. We took a couple of stupid penalties, one of which might cost us down the line." said Head Coach Terry Crisp.

Even though the team kept most of the team stats comparable to that of their opponent, Minnesota outplayed Tampa from the start. C Kip Miller scored in the first after a breakdown in the defensive zone by Doug Crossman, who tried to help out in coverage of Russ Courtnall. That left Miller alone in the slot, where he wristed a shot past Goalie Wendell Young.

Rookie Roman Hamrlik received a 5 minute boarding call in the second period, after he checked Brian Propp hard into the boards. Dave Gagner came to Propp's defense, and started jousting with Hamrlik, and as the refs were trying to regain control, Mike Hartman skated in and began to fight with Gagner. The end result was a 5 minute powerplay for the North Stars, and matching 15 penalty minutes for Gagner and Hartman.

Working with a 5 minute man advantage, the North Stars would make the game 2-0 after Ulf Dahlen deflected a Brent Ashton shot past Young.

Roman Hamrlik has already been told he will be meeting with league officials in the morning concerning his penalty, and expects to be suspended.

"Hammer made a mistake, and even though he's young (18 years old), we can't afford to lose a player that eats up so many minutes." said Captain Bryan Trottier.

Down 2-0 going into the third, the Lightning couldn't find their groove, and North Stars RW Trent Klatt would score twice in the period, to make the end result a 4-0 lost.

The Lightning will look to bounce back tomorrow night when the travel to Chicago in a rematch from opening night, where the Lightning won 7-6 in an exciting match.

Hamrlik Meets With League; Suspended 3 Games

Tampa - After sending North Stars LW Brian Propp into the boards, rookie Defenseman Roman Hamrlik was notified that he will be suspended for the next 3 games.

"People who know me, knows that I am not a dirty player. I hate that I let my team down." Hamrlik said

With the team on an extended road swing, Hamrlik will miss games against Chicago, St. Louis, and Toronto. Hamrlik will be eligible to return October 16th when the Lightning travel to Buffalo.

"Roman's going to take this time, and watch the game from the press box, and see the game from a different angle. I'll be next to him, giving him some insight into what we expect from him." said GM Phil Esposito.

Wayne Gretzky Tears Rotator Cuff; Could Miss Season

Los Angeles - All World NHL star Wayne Gretzky tore his rotator cuff, and is expected to miss the next 4-6 months, leaving his season in jeopardy. This is a huge blow to the Los Angeles Kings (who are dealing with multiple injuries) and the NHL, as the league tries to desperately gain more fans ahead of their current TV deal expiring this off season.

Gretzky has said he is going to work to get back this year, but early reports state he will be done for the year, but could possibly return for a late playoff push.

            Revenge: Blackhawks Down Lightning 4-1

Chicago - After losing on opening night in an exciting 7-6 loss, the Chicago Blackhawks got revenge on the Tampa Bay Lightning by defeating the expansion team 4-1.

"It was a tough night. We have to play better at all facets of the game." said Lightning Center Brian Bradley.

With star rookie Roman Hamrlik sitting out the game due to suspension, Shawn Chambers made his Lightning debut, playing a solid 22 minutes.

"Shawn played a solid game. He didn't put us in a position to lose." said Head Coach Terry Crisp.

However, despite playing a team high 23 minutes, Defenseman Joe Reekie found himself out of position on two of Chicago's goals, ending the night with a -2 rating.

Goalie JC Bergeron made his Lightning regular season debut as well, stopping 32 of Chicago's 36 shots.

Chicago got on the board in the first, after Jeremy Roenick blasted the puck past Bergeron on a Black Hawk powerplay.

With the Lightning down 2-0 in the first, the teams powerplay struck pay dirt again, as Mike Hartman flipped a puck over Ed Belfour's blocker. However, that was the only puck Belfour would let past him, redeeming his effort on opening night.

"We just have to move forward, and concentrate on the next team." said Captain Bryan Trottier.

The Lightning will have today off as they travel to St. Louis to take on the Blues tomorrow night.

Late Goal Dooms Bolts; Lose In St. Louis 2-1

St. Louis - After a goal by Igor Larionov tied the game up in the third period, a late goal by Brett Hull sealed the deal last night in the St. Louis Arena.

"We made a late push, we just couldn't maintain that momentum. Any time Brett Hull is on the ice, we have to step up defensively. We didn't tonight, and we all saw the end result." Head Coach Terry Crisp said.

In a clean game that only saw 3 total penalties (2 for Tampa; 1 for St. Louis), the Blues capitalized in the first after a holding the stick penalty on Adam Creighton. Blues Defenseman Jeff Brown intercepted a pass by Doug Crossman and came in on a breakaway and beat goalie Wendell Young.

"That goal is on me. I made a stupid mistake." Crossman said.

RW Tim Bergland led all Lightning players with 5 shots on net, including one that clanked off the crossbar in the second.

In the third, Igor Larionov received a quick pass from Shawn Chambers, and beat Guy Hebert glove side, tying the game.

However, it was superstar Brett Hull who won the game when he blasted a one timer past Wendell Young.

"I liked our effort, we just couldn't overcome some simple mistakes. Outside of those few mistakes, I think we played our most complete game so far." General Manager Phil Esposito said.

The Lightning will continue on their road swing, taking today off as they travel north of the border to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs tomorrow night.

Wendel Clark, Maple Leafs Power Play Too Much For Tampa

Toronto - The Lightning were overmatched on Thursday night when they faced off against the Maple Leafs of Toronto. Even though the Lightning took only 5 penalties, the Maple Leafs power play scored 4 times with the man advantage, led by Wendel Clark, who scored twice in the first period while on the power play.

"We killed ourselves tonight. We have to play stronger defensively." said Terry Crisp.

"A couple of those calls against us, I didn't agree with, but we have to show more grit and more determination when the calls go against us." Crisp said.

After Wendel Clark opened the scoring with a goal on the power play, the Lightning were almost immediately called for tripping, after Mike Hartman got tangled up with Joe Sacco. Thirty seconds later, Wendel Clark would score again with the man advantage.

Terry Crisp immediately called referee Kerry Fraser over to the bench and unloaded a verbal assault on the ref.

"I politely and gently told him that I thought Sacco took a dive." Crisp said.

Replays appear to back up Crisp's claim, as Hartman's stick didn't make contact with Sacco.

Down 2-0, the Lightning couldn't pull themselves out of the hole, as Peter Zezel beat goalie JC Bergeron on a one timer.

"This loss is on me. I have to play a better game." Bergeron said after the game.

At the end of the first period, Tampa got on the score sheet, as Brian Bradley scored his first goal of the season.

However, the Maple Leafs didn't give the Lightnin anymore leeway, as they scored twice in the second period, both on the power play as Doug Gilmour and Glenn Anderson scored goals with the man advantage.

"We need to tighten up, and not shoot ourselves in the foot. When we take penalties, we really get behind the eight ball." said Defenseman Marc Bergevin.

The Lightning will look to rebound tonight when they make the short trip back to the States, to take on the Buffalo Sabres. The team looks to welcome back rookie Roman Hamrlik, who is eligible to return after serving a 3 game suspension.

Mogliny's Hat Trick Dooms Tampa; Lightning Lose 5-1

Buffalo - The Sabres top line of Alexander Mogliny (3 G/ 1 A), Dale Hawerchuk (2 A), and Dave Andreychuk (1 G) proved to be too much for the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning, as the Sabres downed the Lightning 5-1.

Mogliny was exceptionally good, as he skated past Lightning defensemen with ease, on his was to a hat trick. Mogliny's 11 shots on goal easily outpaced everyone else on the ice, and in fact, was almost half of the Lightning's 25 shots on goal.

"We have to find a way to lock down the opposition, and get their shots down to a minimum." said Head Coach Terry Crisp, after Tampa was outshot 46 to 25.

The return of Roman Hamrlik didn't make much of a difference, and in fact, was out of position on a second period goal by Pat LaFontaine. He did stick up for himself by fighting Petr Svoboda after the Sabres defenseman tried to rough the rookie up in the corner of the ice in the first period.

"Yes, Roman is only 18, and like all teenagers, he will make mistakes. But, we expect more from him. He is a very mature defenseman, and we expect him to play with maturity. He will get there." said GM Phil Esposito.

After being down 3-0, center Brian Bradley tried to get some momentum going Tampa's way, after he scored on the powerplay. That momentum quickly vanished because of the aforementioned LaFontaine goal.

In the third period, the game got a little chippy after Stu Grimson took a run at LaFontaine, and both men ended up dropping the gloves. Grimson made quick work of LaFontaine, who isn't known for his pugilistic skills.

As the final buzzer sounded, Rob Ramage and Bob Sweeney both dropped their gloves and threw some punches before linesmen got in the middle of the scrum.

Late in the game, defenseman Doug Crossman slid down to block a Doug Bodger shot, and the puck bounced off Crossman's shin. Crossman hobbled to the bench before he made his way to the locker room.

Word from the team is that this isn't considered serious, although Crossman could miss a few games.

The next time the Lightning are on the ice will be in three days, as they end their extended road trip and make their way back to the Florida Fairgrounds to take on the Edmonton Oilers in three days.

In the meantime, fans can get up close and personal with some of the Lightning players. Defenseman Joe Reekie and RW Tim Bergland will be signing autographs at Circuit City at 56674 Hillsborough Ave, while LW Rob Zamuner will be signing autographs at Blockbuster Video at 1444 N. Dale Mabry Hwy.

Lightning End 5 Game Skid; Defeat Edmonton 4-1

Tampa - In front of 8,930 fans inside the Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds, the Tampa Bay Lightning ended their 5 game losing streak by defeating the Edmonton Oilers 4-1.

Center Brian Bradley led the way, scoring two goals (one on the power play), and adding an assist on the last goal of the game, scored by Danton Cole.

"We as a team played a complete game. Any individual stats, really belongs to the team as a whole." said Bradley, after his 3 point performance.

The Lightning got off to a 1-0 lead, after Igor Larionov connected on a pass between his legs, to Rob Zamuner, who beat Oilers Goalie Bill Ranford.

"I don't know how Iggy did it, but I am glad he did." joked Zamuner, who was on the receiving end of Larionov's highlight real pass.

Brian Bradley would scored consecutive goals, to put the team up 3-0 in the third. The only breakdown in play happened after Ken Hodge made a sloppy pass attempt, that was intercepted by Bernie Nicholls, who scored on a break away goal.

Lightning Goalie Wendell Young played a stellar game, stopping 24 shots.

"He gave us confidence, and allowed us to play a better game in front of him." said rookie Defensemen Roman Hamrlik.

The team bounced right back after Nicholls goal, when Danton Cole blasted a one timer past Ranford's glove.

The Lightning will take tonight off, before they head back to the Expo Hall to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team will look to avenge their 5-1 loss to the Maple Leafs from earlier this year.

Tampa Falls To Toronto 5-4 In A Hard Fought Game

Tampa - The Lightning fought hard, never stopped playing, but still lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of 9,745 fans inside Expo Hall. After the game, a 5-4 loss, Head Coach Terry Crisp said he was proud of the way his team played.

"You know, coming into this season, being an expansion team, we could very well be a team that has a defeatist attitude. We didn't show that tonight. We did some good things. We did some real dumb things. But, we never gave up."

After going down 2-0 early in the first, thanks to goals by Dave McLwain and Wendel Clark, the Lightning came back to life, thanks in part to Adam Creighton, who dropped the gloves with Todd Gill and held his own against the much bigger Toronto defender.

"Seeing Cray drop the gloves like that, and come away with the edge, it really jump started us." said Brian Bradley.

After the scrum, the Bolts got goals by Igor Larionov and Bryan Trottier to tie the game after the first period.

Rob Cimetta scored a goal a minute into the second period when he took the puck and blasted the puck past Wendell Young.

"That was heartbreaking, for sure. But Crispy calmed us down, and told us to keep on grinding." said captain Bryan Trottier.

Later in the second period, thanks to hard forechecking by Stu Grimson, who managed to muscle the puck away from Rob Pearson, which would lead to a goal by Brian Bradley, tying the game 3-3.

"Keep grinding. That's what we keep preaching." said Assistant Coach Wayne Cashman.

However, the Maple Leafs would go into the third period with a one goal lead, thanks to a powerplay goal by Nikolai Borschevsky that ended the second period.

Coming out into the third period, the Lightning were buzzing around Grant Fuhr, and managed to get one past him, after Mikael Andersson deflected the puck past the Maple Leaf goalie.

As the third period waned on, it did look like the Lightning were tiring.

They were playing with a short bench, after Rob Zamuner exited halfway through the first period, after being driven into the boards. He will be getting checked out by team doctors ahead of their next game against the Quebec Nordiques.

With a depleted bench, the Lightning ended up getting outworked down the stretch. Dave McLlwain, who ended the game with a goal and assist, intercepted a pass by Adam Creighton and the ensuing rush led to the go ahead goal by Joe Sacco.

Zamuner Heads To IR; Team Calls Up Callander

Tampa - Bad news for the Tampa Bay Lightning, as it was announced that LW Rob Zamuner stained his oblique muscle after he was driven into the boards last night by Toronto Maple D Rudy Poeschek.

Zamuner will miss the next 2-3 weeks while he recovers, and was placed on the teams injured reserve list.

GM Phil Esposito announced that the team has recalled RW Jock Callander to take Zamuner's place on the roster. Callander, who scored 2 goals and 2 assists in 7 games with the Atlanta Knights of the IHL, is expected to be in the lineup with the team returns to the ice tomorrow night against the Quebec Nordiques.

Sakic Scores 4; Quebec Obliterates Tampa 7-1

Tampa - The Lightning were thoroughly embarrassed last night, in front of 9,934 fans at the Expo Hall, losing the game 7-1 to the Quebec Nordiques.

Nordiques star center Joe Sakic skated circles around a clearly overmatched Lightning team, scoring 4 goals. Sakic and Mike Ricci scored nearly a minute apart in the first period, making the score 2-0.

The first period also saw an injury to Defenseman Doug Crossman, who suffered a lower leg injury after being on the receiving end of a check from Herb Raglan.

Head Coach Terry Crisp said that Crossman is day-to-day, and might not make the brief trip too Canada that awaits the Lightning.

The lone bright spot for the Lightning came before the first period came to a close, when on the power play, Ken Hodge snuck the puck over Nordiques goalie Ron Hextall.

The Lightning did manage to play some good tough hockey in the second, but Sakic managed to score the lone goal of the period, when he scored on a breakaway while the Nordiques were on the powerplay.

Then in the third period, the flood gates opened, as Quebec scored 4 goals in the period as the Lightning players looked noticeably dejected on the bench.

"It's my job to keep the boys focused and determined to fight back. Tonight, we didn't have any fight back, and that is something that we will work to fix." Head Coach Terry Crisp said.

"Thoroughly embarrassed." a dejected Rob Ramage said.

The team will get a chance to get some revenge, as they will travel to Quebec to play the back end of a home and home against the Nordiques.

Sakic's 4 Point Performance Dooms Lightning

Quebec - Different venue. Different night. Same result. Joe Sakic's dominance against Tampa doomed the Lightning for another night. Sakic lead all skaters with 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists).

"The guy is unreal. He is going to be something special." said Tampa Associate Coach Wayne Cashman. "We game planned for him, but he still managed to go off."

Leading 3-0 after two periods, it looked like a repeat from their last game, except this time, the Lightning showed some heart in the final period.

After a scrum between Rob Ramage and Adam Foote, that saw both men get 15 penalty minutes apiece, the Lightning began to play with a sense of urgency. Danton Cole scored his 3rd goal of the season after a nifty between the legs pass from Mikael Andersson.

However, the Nordiques kept the pressure on, going off for 18 shots in the last 10 minutes of the game, totaling 41 for the night.

Andrei Kovalenko and Sakic both scored in the last period, making the game 5-1.

Showing the heart that was missing in their last contest, the Lightning fired back on the powerplay when Adam Creighton beat Ron Hextall, making the final tally 5-2.

"We have to keep battling. Can't get down on our record (2-8-0) this early. The season is long, and we will start to see some success." said Tampa LW Mike Hartman.

"Yes, we are an expansion team, but we have talent in this room." said Mikael Andersson, who led all forwards with 20:42 of playing time.

The Lightning will have today off, before they play the storied Montral Canadiens.
