Eastern Conference Finals Preview: Maple Leafs and Rangers Set for Heavyweight Showdown

    May 16th, 2025

Toronto dominated the Season Series 3-0-0.

The top two teams in the Eastern Conference will clash in what promises to be a thrilling series as the 1st-seeded Toronto Maple Leafs take on the 2nd-seeded New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Both teams have been dominant throughout the season and playoffs, making this a true battle of hockey heavyweights. Game 1 is set for Monday, May 19th, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

The Maple Leafs swept the regular-season series against the Rangers, going 3-0-0 while outscoring New York 13-7. Toronto’s high-powered offense proved too much for the Rangers during the regular season, but playoff hockey is a different beast.

“They’re a deep, talented team, and we know we need to be at our best,” said Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette. “The regular season doesn’t matter now—it’s all about who plays the best hockey over the next two weeks.”

The Maple Leafs have been an offensive powerhouse, led by Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander. Matthews has been particularly dominant, leading the team in goals, while Marner’s playmaking ability has been crucial on special teams.

Toronto’s goaltending duo of Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll has been solid, but they will be tested by a deep Rangers forward group.

“This is the series we expected,” said Leafs captain John Tavares. “We know what kind of team they are, and we’re ready for a battle.”

The Rangers have been one of the best defensive teams in the playoffs, thanks to their elite blue line featuring Adam Fox, Jacob Trouba, and K’Andre Miller. Their forwards, led by Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Chris Kreider, have stepped up in big moments.

Of course, Igor Shesterkin remains the ultimate x-factor. The Vezina-winning goaltender is capable of stealing games, and the Rangers will lean on him heavily against Toronto’s high-flying offense.

“Toronto is an offensive force, but we’re confident in our structure,” said Rangers captain Zibanejad. “We’re built for this type of series.”

    Key Matchups to Watch

    Auston Matthews vs. Igor Shesterkin

Matthews has been lights out this postseason, but he’ll be facing the best goaltender he’s seen yet. If Shesterkin plays at an elite level, he could be the difference in the series.

    Special Teams Battle

The Leafs have thrived on the power play, but the Rangers’ penalty kill has been one of the best in the league. Can Toronto continue their success with the man advantage?

Toronto’s Speed vs. New York’s Physicality

The Leafs rely on quick transitions and skill, while the Rangers bring physicality and a structured defensive approach. The team that dictates the pace could control the series.

This series features two elite teams, deep rosters, and elite goaltending, making it one of the most anticipated matchups of the playoffs.

Toronto has the firepower and home-ice advantage, but New York has the defensive structure and goaltending to counter it. Expect a tough, physical, and emotional battle that could go the distance. Expect Game 1 on May 19th at the Scotiabank Place to be explosive as both teams hope to set the tone.

Golden Knights Storm Back to Win Game 1 Over Kraken, Take Early Series Lead

                May 18th, 2025

Forward Brendan Brisson proved to be the Hero in Game 1, scoring 1 Goal, 1 Assist.

The Vegas Golden Knights overcame an early two-goal deficit, scoring four unanswered goals to defeat the Seattle Kraken 4-2 in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals at T-Mobile Arena.

Despite being outshot 32-29, Vegas dominated the physical game (48 hits to Seattle’s 28) and made the most of their power play opportunities, going 2-for-4, while their penalty kill held the Kraken to 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Golden Knights take a 1-0 series lead, showing once again why they are a Stanley Cup favorite.

Seattle took control early, grabbing a 1-0 lead late in the first period when Reilly Smith scored with just 23 seconds left, finishing a pass from Anthony Cirelli to silence the Vegas crowd.

Smith doubled the lead at 9:48 of the second period, capitalizing on a setup from Jaden Schwartz and Cirelli, giving the Kraken a 2-0 advantage as they looked to steal Game 1 on the road.

But Vegas responded in dominant fashion, taking over the game with their special teams and relentless physicality.

Trailing 2-0, Vegas finally broke through on the power play at 12:58 of the second period, when Max Pacioretty blasted a shot past Ilya Sorokin, off a crisp setup from Mark Stone and Jack Eichel.

Less than three minutes later, Jonathan Marchessault tied the game at 15:29, finishing another power play opportunity with assists from Sam Reinhart and Shea Theodore.

“You have to capitalize when you get those chances,” said Vegas interim head coach Bruce Cassidy. “Our power play stepped up, and from there, we played our game.”

With the game tied 2-2 heading into the third, Vegas had all the momentum.

Vegas continued their charge in the third period, getting a go-ahead goal at 11:51 from Brendan Brisson, who was inserted into the lineup after Mikko Matikka suffered an injury in practice. Brisson made the most of his opportunity, finishing a slick passing play from Morgan Geekie and Brayden McNabb to put Vegas ahead 3-2.

Just three minutes later, Nathan Gaucher put the game away, scoring off another setup from Geekie and Brisson, as the Golden Knights completed their four-goal comeback.

Brisson finished the game with a goal and an assist, earning First Star honors in his playoff debut.

Vegas’s physicality wore down Seattle, with 48 hits compared to the Kraken’s 28. Special teams were the difference, as the Golden Knights capitalized on the power play, while Seattle failed to convert on their three chances.

“Our PK was excellent, and our physical game made a difference,” said Stone. “That’s what playoff hockey is about.”

With a 1-0 series lead, Vegas will look to build on their momentum in Game 2 on Tuesday, May 20.

“They took over in the second half of the game,” said Kraken coach Dave Hakstol. “We have to be better defensively and take advantage of our chances.”

Stone’s Late Heroics Lift Golden Knights to 4-3 Win Over Kraken, Take 2-0 Series Lead

                        May 20th, 2025

Captain Mark Stone celebrates after scoring the Game Winner recording his 6th Goal of the Playoffs.

The Vegas Golden Knights continue to find ways to win in clutch moments, as Mark Stone buried the game-winning goal with just 30 seconds left in regulation to give Vegas a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Kraken in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals at T-Mobile Arena.

With the win, Vegas takes a commanding 2-0 series lead, heading to Seattle with all the momentum.

Despite trailing 2-0 early, the Golden Knights battled back, outshooting Seattle 38-28, outhitting them 30-29, and maintaining their commitment to defense, blocking 31 shots to Seattle’s 25.

The Kraken wasted no time making a statement, scoring just 58 seconds into the game, as Brock McGinn finished a passing play from Jared McCann and Alex Galchenyuk to give Seattle a 1-0 lead.

Seattle struck again at 6:39, when Matty Beniers extended the lead to 2-0 off a setup from Ryan Hartman and Riley Stillman, putting Vegas on its heels early.

Vegas responded on the power play at 14:36, when Sam Reinhart fired a shot past Ilya Sorokin, capitalizing on a setup from Zach Whitecloud and Nicolas Hague to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the second period.

The Golden Knights continued to apply pressure in the second period, and their persistence paid off at 5:34, when Max Pacioretty finished a slick passing sequence from Jack Eichel and Stone, tying the game at 2-2.

Vegas tightened up defensively, limiting Seattle’s scoring chances, and the period ended with the game deadlocked, setting up a tense third period.

Vegas took its first lead of the game at 7:39 of the third, as William Karlsson capitalized on a crisp passing play from Reinhart and Jonathan Marchessault, making it 3-2.

Seattle refused to go away and tied the game at 12:15 on the power play, with Anthony Cirelli scoring off a setup from Jaden Schwartz and McGinn, making it 3-3.

As the game appeared to be headed to overtime, Karlsson intercepted a pass during a Seattle line change, creating an odd-man rush. He found Pacioretty, who quickly set up Stone, and the Vegas captain fired the game-winning shot past Sorokin with just 30 seconds left.

T-Mobile Arena erupted, and the Golden Knights closed out the final moments to secure the 4-3 victory.

Vegas’s shot-blocking and physical commitment once again played a key role in shutting down Seattle’s attack.

Meanwhile, Jack Eichel extended his playoff point streak to 12 games, continuing his dominant postseason.

“Jack has been incredible all playoffs, and you can see his confidence,” said Vegas interim coach Bruce Cassidy. “Reinhart also stepped up big—he’s built for this time of year.”

With Vegas up 2-0 in the series, the Kraken will look to turn things around at home when they host Game 3 at Climate Pledge Arena on May 22.

Seattle has proven they can compete, but blowing late leads in back-to-back games has put them on the brink of falling into a 3-0 hole.

“They’ve taken advantage of our mistakes,” said Kraken captain Matty Beniers. “We need to be better in closing out games.”

For Vegas, the message remains the same—stay disciplined, stay physical, and keep finding ways to win.

“We know they’re going to push back,” said Stone. “We have to be ready for their best game.”
