Rewriting the Attitude Era: My WWF Journal

Survivor Series 1997 is over. Bret "The Hitman" Hart, who is leaving for World Championship Wrestling, has just been screwed out of the title by Vince McMahon, Shawn Michaels and Triple H. The fans in Montreal are in bewilderment and are confused with the outcome of the match. As Triple H pushes Shawn Michaels to the back to get away from the angry fans, Bret Hart stands in the ring, leaning up against the ropes staring down at McMahon. Bret Hart then proceeds to spit in Vince McMahon's face and flips him off. Vince quickly wipes the mucus out of his eye and makes his way backstage as well. While McMahon is cowering in his office with his stooges Pat Patterson, Gerald Briscoe, and Sgt. Slaughter, Hart has gone outside the ring and starts tearing up World Wrestling Federation equipment. The British Bulldog, Jim Neidhart and Owen Hart come out to the ring to help console Bret.

[20 Minutes Later]

Bret pounds on McMahon's door.

Bret Hart: Vince!! Open this #### door right now!!

Vince doesn't open the door and Bret then angrily walks to his dressing room and starts unlacing his boots

Dark Match before Monday Night Raw

Dark Match: Oddities (Golga/Kurrgan/Giant Silva vs. DOA (Chainz, Skull, 8 Ball)


After the Survivor Series, the wrestlers who had once trusted Vince McMahon have gone on strike out of protest to Bret Hart getting screwed out of the title by backstage politician Shawn Michaels. After three months of negotiations, the wrestlers agreed to come back as long as all of the titles were vacated. This was done to prevent any championships that were put onto superstars that kissed up to Vince. Now, Monday Night Raw is back on the air.......

Year One/March/Week One

Monday Night Raw

Pyro explodes and the fans come to their feet as Monday Night Raw starts after a long hiatus.

Jim Ross: Welcome everyone to the first Monday Night Raw of the year!! I am Jim Ross along with my partner Jerry "The King" Lawler! And have we got a show for you tonight.

Jerry Lawler: I can't wait!

Vince McMahon's music plays over the PA system and the fans start to boo. Vince struts out onto the ramp with the Big Bossman coming out quickly behind him. McMahon has the World Wrestling Federation Championship over his shoulder.

Jerry Lawler: Well, this didn't take long! Mr. McMahon is going to grace us with his presence! He is such a great owner to get this strike over with and letting us get back to work.

Jim Ross: Oh please! He is the reason we haven't been on the air in over three months!

Jerry Lawler: Everyone makes mistakes J.R. Nobody is perfect........though I think McMahon is a great businessman.

Jim Ross: Keep drinking the Kool-Aid King.

Vince struts up the steps and climbs in the ring and the Bossman climbs in as well.

Howard Finkel: Ladies and Gentlemen, at this time please welcome the Owner and Chairman of the World Wrestling Federation.......Mr. McMahon!!

Vince McMahon takes the microphone away from the Fink and Finkel gets out of the ring. McMahon's music goes off and Vince starts to speak over the booing fans.

Mr. McMahon: Thank you everyone for coming out tonight for the first episode of the new and improved.....Monday Night Raw. I appreciate you willing to give my company another shot after the events of Survivor Series and the actions of one......Bret "The Hitman" Hart.

Crowd: You screwed Bret! You screwed Bret! You screwed Bret!

Mr. McMahon: You are right. I did screw Bret Hart. And if I had the chance, I would do it all over again.

That incites more boos from the fans.

Mr. McMahon: Now, moving on……..you are all in for a great night of sports entertainment tonight. During our three month hiatus we have signed some new talent to our roster along with bringing all of your favorite stars back, because you fans is what makes the World Wrestling Federation what it is.

That remark calms the fans down a little.

Mr. McMahon: I know Bret Hart has a lot of friends in the back that would love to get a cheap shot on Vincent Kennedy McMahon. So I have gone out and hired a security force. And his name is THE BIG BOSSMAN!

Bossman takes out his knightstick off of his belt and raises his hands in the air.

Mr. McMahon: Now the main reason as to why I am out here. I have a huge announcement to make, and it concerns the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Championship.

DX’s music plays over the PA system and the fans give a mixed response. Shawn Michaels, Triple H, X-Pac and Chyna come out of the back and make their way to the ring.

Jerry Lawler: Finally! The real world champion is here.

Jim Ross: Real world champion my ###. He never made Bret Hart tap out and you know it.

Shawn Michaels climbs into the ring and he has a microphone ready to go in his hand. Triple H, Chyna and X-Pac climb in as well and backup HBK. Their music quickly cuts off.

Shawn Michaels: Vince…….I think I know as well as all of these fans know what your announcement is going to be, which is why I am out here. Your announcement is that you are presenting ME, the Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels, with the WWF Championship.

Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon pause to let the fans get in their reaction, which is a chorus of boos.

Mr. McMahon: Is that right? Well, I hate to be the one to inform you that you coming out here and interrupting me was a big waste of time.

The fans roar with their approval.

Shawn Michaels: Vince, I deserve to be World Champion. Everyone saw me defeat Bret Hart at Survivor Series just like you did. I proved that he wasn’t the best there is……the best there was……there best that ever will be. Because that’s………me. Now give me what is rightfully mine. I want my championship belt. Either you give it to me or I will just have to take it from you.

Shawn Michaels steps up to grab Vince McMahon but the Big Bossman steps in between with his knight stick. The fans come to their feet anticipating a fight.

Vince McMahon: Calm down Bossman. What I did come out here for was to announce that I have decided to hold an eight man tournament to crown an undisputed World Wrestling Federation Champion. And considering that this is the month of March, what better place to hold the finals than at Wrestlemania ’98.

Jim Ross: Wow King! We are going to crown a new World Champion at Wrestlemania!

Jerry Lawler: This isn’t fair at all.

Mr. McMahon: These eight superstars I feel are the best. They are as follows:

Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Mankind, Owen Hart, Vader, “The Peoples Champ” The Rock, You……..Shawn Michaels……

Triple H grabs the microphone away from HBK.

Triple H: Listen you piece of ####.......I am not as patient as Shawn is. You either hand over that belt or I swear I am going to kick your ### all over this ring.

Mr. McMahon: You know better Hunter. That will not happen tonight, or any other night for that matter. But since you two like giving threats, you didn’t let me finish. The eighth and final person is you Triple H.

Triple H starts to smile thinking about the World Title around his waist

Triple H: Well, it’s about #### time you give me a shot.

Mr. McMahon: Oh…….you will get your shot Hunter. Because next week here on Monday Night Raw, you will have your opening match against none other than…….your friend Shawn Michaels!

The fans erupt into ovation.

Jerry Lawler: WHAT?!?!?

Jim Ross: Shawn Michaels and Triple H next week on Raw!

Jerry Lawler: Wait, who is that?

While Triple H and Shawn Michaels are having a tantrum that they have to fight each other, Owen Hart comes out of the crowd and slides in and tackles Michaels to the ground. Owen starts to pummel on Michaels.

Jim Ross: It’s Owen Hart!

Jerry Lawler: What the heck is he doing here?

Jim Ross: He is getting revenge for his brother King! And he is beating the heck out of Shawn Michaels.

[/i]Vince McMahon and Bossman quickly exit the ring with the commotion going on. They make their way up the ramp quickly and go backstage. Triple H and X-Pac grab Owen, throws him off of Shawn and they proceed to stomp him while he lays on the mat. They then pick Owen up and Chyna gives him a low blow.[/i]

The fans erupt again as Stone Cold Steve Austin comes out of the back and runs down the ramp with a steel chair in his hands. He slides in the ring and DX quickly exits the ring. He picks up a mic that Vince left when he made his exit while Owen slowly gets to his feet.

Steve Austin: You think you can just beat up anyone that you want? AAAAAHHH AAHH! That’s not going to happen when Stone Cold is around. I’ll tell ya what. We will get a partner and later tonight you three sons of #####es get in the ring with us in a six man tag team match!

Jim Ross: Alright! What a main event!

Shawn Michaels shakes his head yes and agrees to the match.

Steve Austin: If you want Stone Cold to open up a giant can of whoop ### on DX, give me a hell yeah!

The Crowd: Hell yea!

Stone Cold’s music plays over the PA system while DX and Austin and Owen exchange barbs with one another as DX makes their way up the ramp.

Jerry Lawler: This Raw is going to be great!

Jim Ross: Austin and Owen Hart with a mystery partner against D-X! What else will happen tonight?

Jim Ross: Welcome back folks to Monday Night Raw. Before the break we had our main event announced as Stone Cold Steve Austin and Owen Hart with a mystery partner will do battle with D-Generation X members Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and X-Pac. In case you are just tuning in you missed Vince McMahon announcing that there will be an eight man tournament for the vacant World Wrestling Federation Championship. It was further elaborated on during the break that starting tonight we will have two quarterfinal matches and two more matches next week.

Jerry Lawler: That’s right J.R. The winners of those matches will advance to Wrestlemania ’98. They will have the privilege of competing in the main event to crown the new undisputed champion!

Jim Ross: And we have just been given the brackets…..



Jim Ross: Wow, what a first round we have. Of course before the commercial break we found out that Shawn Michaels will meet his fellow D-X member Triple H next week.

Jerry Lawler: Such a travesty. I always trust Mr. McMahon, but I think he went off the deep end this time.

Jim Ross: Tonight we are going to have Mankind going up against the Undertaker. What wars they have had in the past……and this should be no exception. Also tonight, The People’s Champion The Rock will go against none other than the man they call Vader!

Jerry Lawler: I wonder how Faarooq is going to react about not being in the tournament. He is the leader of the Nation of Domination after all.

Jim Ross: Look at the bottom King. Owen Hart is going to go up against Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Jerry Lawler: A lot of history there J.R. Owen is responsible for Austin’s neck injury at Summerslam. And now with them battling each other next week for a spot in the semifinals, how in the world are they going to be cohesive tonight?

Jim Ross: Also fans, tonight we will be crowning our first two champions as the Light Heavyweight Championship will be contested in an eight man over the top battle royal. Al Snow will also be fighting none than The Funkster Terry Funk for the Hardcore Championship.

Jerry Lawler: I can't wait. Let's go to the ring where Howard Finkel is ready to introduce the opening contest.

Match #1: Edge w/ Gangrel vs. Dr. Death Steve Williams

Referee Tim White signals for the bell as the time limit has expired. Edge and Steve Williams are both exhausted and have their hands on their knees trying to get some air.

Howard Finkel: Ladies and Gentlemen, the thirty minute time limit has expired. Therefore, this match is a draw!!

Jim Ross: What an exciting match that was! I wish we could give these men more time.

Jerry Lawler: Don’t worry J.R. I am sure they will meet again somewhere down the line. The fans aren’t too happy with the result it seems.

The fans boo as Gangrel grabs a chair and slides into the ring behind Steve Williams. He then smashes the chair into Dr. Death’s back and Williams falls to the canvas in pain. Gangrel then hits him again.

Jim Ross: What a cheap shot by Gangrel. What a no good, lousy….

Jerry Lawler: The Brood might have not officially won this match, but they will make sure that Dr. Death Steve William’s loses.

Gangrel goes to hit him again but Edge pushes Gangrel away from Williams who is motionless on the ground. Edge then grabs the chair and tosses it to the ground. He then proceeds to get up in Gangrels face and starts yelling at him. Gangrel yells back and Edge pushes him.

Jim Ross: What? Edge is sticking up for Dr. Death. I don’t get it King.

Jerry Lawler: I don’t either J.R. But for some reason Edge is showing a small fraction of humanity all of a sudden.

Gangrel and Edge exit the ring with Dr. Death finally starting to become conscious.

Jim Ross: Hopefully we will find out some more on this situation later. We have to take a break folks, but when we return the Hardcore Title will be on the line!!
