2011 Preseason Recap & Season Preview

    Staff News

Shortly after Ducharme's arrival he announced that most of the current staff would be retained while he looked to add some of his own staff to compliment them. Ducharme quickly named fellow Frenchman Richard Tardy as his First Team Coach. Tardy is believed to be a mentor figure to Ducharme with his significant head coaching history. Ducharme also added Canadian scout Davide Xausa. Xausa has a significant amount of knowledge in England and Scotland, an area where Ducharme would like to find future talent.

    Current Staff

Head Coach - Adrien Ducharme (France, 1st year with club)
Assistant Coach - John Hackworth (USA, 2nd year)
First Team Coach - Richard Tardy (France, 1st year)

GK Coach - Rob Vartughian (USA, 2nd year)
Fitness Coach - Paul Rushing (USA, 2nd year)
Physio - Matt Sherwood (USA, 1st year)
Scout - Davide Xausa (Canada, 1st year)
Scout - Diego Gutierrez (USA, 1st year)

Ducharme and the club are still looking to add additional scouts and another physio.

    Roster News

Ducharme quickly noted the team's weakness in his most important area of the pitch, defensively the team needs improvement. However, Ducharme was unable to bring in the type of talent needed to upgrade the team significantly after failing to get defender Eric Lichaj on loan from Aston Villa. The 2 clubs were unable to reach an agreement on the amount of salary contribution required to complete the deal.

In February the Union brought in defender Nick Garcia (USA, 31 yrs old) on a free transfer. Garcia made 23 appearances last season with Toronto and is capable of playing anywhere on the defensive line. Ducharme also added defender Ty Harden (USA, 27 yrs old) during the Waiver Draft. Harden made 12 appearances last season with Toronto. Perhaps the most popular signing was midfielder Conor Shanosky (USA, 19 yrs old) after being waived by DC United. Shanosky is regarded as a top prospect.

Defender Joe Tait (England, 21 yrs old) was waived to allow the team to be below the International Limit. He remains a free agent.

Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Qualifying Round 1st Rd Match - Philadelphia vs. DC United
                      April 13, 2011
                      PPL Park
                      42 F / Breezy / 7:30 PM

Dwayne De Rosario is out with bruised ribs and Branko Boskovic is doubtful with a bruised shin for DC United. While Justin Mapp is out with a groin strain for Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is favored with 6-4 odds and DC United are the underdogs with 13-8 odds.

                      Squad
                      GK - Mondragon
                      D - Garcia / Harden / Valdes / Gonzalez / Miglioranzi
                      M - Le Toux / Okugo / Daniel / Adu
                      F - McInerney

                      Bench - McMath / Farfan / Carroll / Paunovic / Williams / Nakazawa / Torres
                      Inactive - Mapp / Mwanga / Califf

                      First Half
3' - A great one-two combination with Le Toux and McInerney, that ends with a through ball to McInerney and he scores!! However, the goal is disallowed due to a questionable offsides call.
18' - Le Toux and McInerney team up again - this time with Le Toux running the ball deep into the area on the right before centering to McInerney who scores with a powerful shot!!! PHI 1 : 0 DC
27' - A nice play by Adu knifing through the United defense but his shot is just wide! Philly is in control of the match thus far.
33' - Off a counter attack Philadelphia has a 5 on 3 advantage and Okugo plays an amazing pass through to McInerney who bangs it off the post and in for his 2nd goal of the night!!! PHI 2 : 0 DC

                      Half Time
                      Philadelphia 2 : 0 DC United
Complete domination in the first half by Philly despite not playing several key players. With a MLS match in the coming days Ducharme will likely look to rest some more players with the lead they have.

                      Second Half
45' - Torres and Nakazawa come on for Adu and Le Toux for Philadelphia.
45'- McTavish and Boskovic come on for Korb and Brettschneider for DC.

60' - DC United catch Mondragon napping and they put a shot on goal and as he is trying to put it behind for a corner he knocks it in! PHI 2 : 1 DC
82' - A deep shot from DC's Simms is more challenging than it should be and Mondragon cannot control it! However, Philly gets a break when DC commits a foul allowing for the free kick clearance!
88' - Garcia gets booked for tripping.
90+1' - A deep shot from DC's da Luz but Mondragon is able to make the diving save!

                      Final
                      Philadelphia 2 : 1 DC United
The 2nd half was more even but the early domination provided the necessary lead as the Union advance to the 2nd Rd of Qualifying. Their rivals DC United are surely disappointed to not meet club expectations. The Union will travel to play New England on May 4th for the 2nd Rd match.

RSL has done well to control possession and pace of the match - they have basically controlled the ball playing keep away from the Union.
