    COLCHESTER TIMES

    Verde Appointed Colchester Manager

    July 1st, 2011

It's official ladies and gentlemen. As has long been rumored, Canadian rookie benchboss Carlos Verde is taking over the reins at Colchester Community Stadium from John Ward, who resigned at the end of last season citing personal life problems as the reason for his resignation. Ward led the U's to a respectable 10th place finish last season, and Colchester United faithful felt he had the team surely headed for a promotion this year and were shocked at his departure. The Colchester board has stated that they expect Verde to have the team in the dogfight for promotion. "I think that the board have got realistic expectations, we've got a solid football club here, I plan to make some moves, shore up the defense, andplay an attacking, attractive style of football," said Verde in his press conference yesterday. Rumors have already hinted that Verde has been doggedly pursuing Gold Coast United (A-League)'s Golgol Mebrahtu, a speedy forward. "I do feel that we may need to inject some pace before the transfer window closes, as of today, I'll be playing a 5-3-2 with the wing mids pushing up, we'll be an attacking team. We'll have to be."

    Colchester United FC Roster
    Name - Overall - Age
    Keepers
    B. Williams - 66 - 28
    M. Cousins - 59 - 24
    C. Pentney - 55 - 21

    Defenders
    B. Wilson - 62 - 28
    M. Okuonghae - 64 - 25
    M. Heath - 62 - 29
    M. Rose - 60 - 28
    J. White - 60 - 24
    B. Coker - 59 - 21
    P. Baldwin - 60 - 28
    T. Eastman - 59 - 19
    B. Hamilton - 45 - 18
    T. Aldred - 59 - 20

    Midfielders
    K. Izzet - 62 - 29
    J. O'Toole - 65 - 22
    L. James - 62 - 23
    A. Bond - 61 - 25
    K. Duguld - 60 - 33
    J. Sanderson - 51 - 17

    Forwards
    I. Henderson - 64 - 26
    K. Odejayi - 62 - 29
    A. Vincent - 62 - 26
    S. Gillespie - 64 - 26
    M. Antonio - 64 - 21
    J. Arnott - 45 - 18

Verde's thoughts on the roster :
"Well we've got a League One side right now. Almost entirely domestic players, playing a very Island-style game. I'm going to bring in some European flair, a little more creativity, and we're going to play Total Football. Odejayi is obviously one of the most powerful strikers in all of English football (91 strength, 84 sprint speed too ), and we will use him appropriately. We've got some good depth on the bench too. I think we can definitely challenge for a promotion spot."

We'll know a lot more about this bunch after their final three friendlies :
    July 13th - v. Beira Mar (Portugal)
    July 20th - @ Schalke (Germany)
    July 27th - v. Kuban Krasnodar (Russia)

"I think that we should and can get results from the games on the 13th and the 27th, although the match in Germany will be extremely difficult. It'll be a good experience for our younger players to have the opportunity to play in front of so many people at such a world class pitch. They should enjoy every minute of the match at Schalke."

The npower League One campaign, which counts 46 games in total, will start on August 6th when the U's travel to Bramall Lane to take on recently-relegated Sheffield United. "That might be a tough one, as Sheffield have kept their Championship-calibre roster more or less intact. Bramall Lane is always a tough pitch to play at, because of the raucous support the Blades always get."

Well Colchester United fans, we have only a short time longer to wait before we get to see our beloved U's take the pitch.

    Re: Carlos Verde Manager Extraordinaire

    July 11th, 2011

Rumors have been flying around that manager Carlos Verde has turned down an $800 000 transfer offer from Bournemouth for Colchester's strongest centreback, Okouonghae.
"Bournemouth offered us a very generous amount, but we simply feel like we cannot afford to lose Okouonghae, he is just too much of a rock at the back for us to play without him."

In other transfer news, Notts County reportedly offered somewhere in the vicinity of $1.1 million for top Colchester striker Henderson. "Yes, Notts County did offer us a large sum for his services, but once again, it was a case of 'can we get on without him up front?' and the answer was simply no, we can't. Henderson is just too valuable up front for us."

Verde would not comment when asked about his interest in Mexican side Tigres' LB Fernando Navarro, a speedy 22 year-old who can also play LM.

The only actual transaction that has gone on with the U's was the transfer of backup keeper M. Cousins (59 overall, 24 years old).
"We had a discussion, Mr. Cousins and myself, about what his role would be. He felt, that at the age of 24, he had the right to more playing time for a League One side, I didn't. Now he's off to Gillingham. Good riddance."

      Colchester Downed By Beira-Mar

      July 14th, 2011

The U's got off to a disappointing start in their series of friendlies last night at C.C. Stadium, as they fell 3-2 to Portuguese cellar-dwellers Beira-Mar.
"We just didn't get going in that game, they out-possessed us I believe 62-38 or something terrible like that. We had a good start, but the red card to Heath really messed it up for us. O'Toole had a standout game in the midfield, but other than that we really didn't have a very good game. We didn't deserve to take all 3 points in this game, or even a point really. It was a pretty disappointing effort."

Colchester got on the board early, when O'Toole volleyed a cracked off of the far post from just inside the Beira-Mar 18 yard-box in the 7th minute. All was well.

However, Beira-Mar striker Balboa had something to say about that; in the 13th minute he made a spectacular run from the edge of his own 18 all the way past the sprawled Colchester keeper Williams before calmly finishing into the yawning net to tie it at 1.

The game settled into a nice rhythm, mostly with Beira-Mar attacking in waves, when United played Heath took down Balboa ferociously just outside the United 18. Heath was lucky to only get a yellow, and lucky that Balboa's resulting 35th-minute freekick thudded off the post as opposed to finding mesh.

The game was knotted at 1 at the half, probably undeservedly for Colchester United.

In the 50th, Heath again went in hard, and picked up his second yellow, earning him a sending-off.

Just two minutes later, Balboa made another fantastic run, latching onto a through ball and blasting it into the top corner to pull Beira-Mar ahead 2-1.

Colchester wouldn't lay down, however, and just three minutes after the Balboa goal, in the 65th minute, O'Toole scored his second of the game on another fantastic strike from outside the 18 to tie the game at 2.

But, in the 87th, the Beira-Mar attack came on strong again, catching Colchester's midfield napping. The yellow jackets buzzed around the Colchester 18 before Cristiano finally juked a defender before ripping a left-footed shot into the bottom far corner of the goal.

Beira-Mar would hang on to win 3-2 before a rather dead crowd of 5461 at CC Stadium.

In an exciting transfer move, the Colorado Rapids have accepted my $800 000 transfer bid for CB Marvell Wynne. Wynne has 94 pace! xD This won't even be fair in League One!

          Re: Carlos Verde Manager Extraordinaire

I won't go into detail on the last two friendlies, they were rather forgettable (I simmed them, so please forgive me for the blowouts!)...
I lost 4-1 at Schalke, never really had a chance, received six yellows in the first half alone, had just 9 men by the end of it. Actually scored a goal a man down though, so not bad.

I OFFICIALLY SIGNED MARVELL WYNNE! Which is great, because he is the fastest CB in the game I believe and should tear up League One!

I lost another forgettable game 2-0 at home against Kuban Krasnodar (whoever that is?) ...Wynne was the best player on my team in that game with an 8.7 match rating

I'm still searching for a cheap speedy striker with the $1 475 000 budget I have left...any suggestions?

My next post won't be until the end of the month of August, by which point I'll have played :

Aug. 6 - League One - @Sheffield Utd (Expecting a point at least)
Aug. 9 - League Cup - v. Exeter (Should win comfortably)
Aug. 13 - League One - v. Sheff. Wed. (Should get three)
Aug. 20 - League One - @Bury (Not sure about that one)
Aug. 23 - Carling Cup - v. Shrewsbury (Should win)
Aug. 27th - League One - v. Yeovil (Should win, Yeovil's not good)

My starting line-up going into my first season game is :
          Colchester United (5-3-2)
          B. Williams (66)
          B. Coker (59) - P. Baldwin (60) - M. Wynne (66) - M. Okuounghae (64) - B. Wilson (62)
          L. James (62) - A. Woodsworth (62) - J. O'Toole (65)
          K. Odejayi (62) - S. Gillespie (64)

@ Sheffield Utd (1st league game)
Going in, I knew this would be a tough game, as Sheffield Utd were recently demoted from the Championship and had most of that team still together. They'll definitely compete for promotion this season.
            GAMETIME
'34 - The bull is on the ball, it's Kayode Odejayi on it, spinning, evades his marker, into the 18-yard box, and he POWERS the ball into the far low corner! An excellent strike from "Bull" Odejayi and Colchester Utd take a surprising 1-0 lead!
'61 - Now Porter on the ball for Sheffield Utd, around one defender, nutmegs another, right side, in alone on Williams, toe-punts it OFF THE POST AND IN! And the Blades, have drawn LEVEL! 1-1!
'79 - Odejayi makes a very poor tackle in the midfield, from behind, three seconds late, and he gets a deserved red card.
'90+4 - Freekick from 25 yds out here for Sheffield Utd in what could be the final play of the game, Findlay over it, runs up, and fires....HITS THE CROSSBAR! So near from Sheffield there!
FINAL WHISTLE - Colchester Utd 1-1 Sheffield Utd
"I was pretty happy with the way we played to be honest, Sheffield is an excellent team, but it's not as though we didn't have chances of our own. Sure, they hit the crossbar on the final play of the game, but I don't believe that means they had any better a game than we did. We deserved that point, and with a bounce here or there, we could've gotten three."

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------
            v. Exeter (League Cup)
I thought this would be a relatively easy game, however I forgot that my team had only two days rest between the Sheffield game and this one. Exeter is probably going to drop to League Two this season, they've got very few offensive weapons, and their defense is porous (they lost 4-0 to Sheffield Wednesday on opening day). I was missing the Bull for this one , as Odejayi was suspended two games for his brutal challenge. With a full week's rest and a top line-up on the pitch, I should shred them in league play.
            GAMETIME
Halftime - 0:0. Team looking tired. Two days rest not enough. Not nearly enough. Just one shot combined between both teams (by me), and it wasn't even on target. Very lazy pace to the game, no one in a hurry to do much. I've got to take the initiative...
’60 - Gillespie makes a great run, attracts defenders, then lays it off to Henderson for an easy tap-in (ahem sweaty goal!)... 1-0 COLCHESTER!
’73 - Gillespie with another great move, well stopped by Krysiak in net for Exeter!
FINAL WHISTLE - Colchester 1-0 Exeter
"Well I thought going into this one that it would be a more comfortable victory for us, but a victory is a victory. Exeter didn't create much today, but neither did we. We're quite lucky that we got the win on two days rest. We played good defense today, though, that's definitely a positive for us."

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Colchester Utd are proud to announce the signing of Forward Tahj Minniecon from Australia's Gold Coast Utd for $800 000. Minniecon is a speedy, aggressive forward who will be counted upon to run miles up front, and pot some goals as well.
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------
@ Sheffield Wednesday (League Game #2)
At the start of the season, I thought this would be an easy three points, but after Shef. Wed.'s first two results, I'm thinking I was mistaken in thinking that. Shef. Wed. beat Exeter 4-0 in their first league game, and shocked Championship side Southampton 2-0 in League Cup play. I'll have to watch out for their obviously potent offense. Odejayi is still out of the line-up. Minniecon makes his Colchester debut up front w/Gillespie.
            GAMETIME
'17 - Here is Minniecon, dipsy-doodling his way into the Sheffield 18, around another defender, clipped and down he goes! It's a PENALTY TO COLCHESTER! Stepping up to take it is Steven Gillespie, takes his run-up, and slots it home! The Sheffield keeper guessed right and in all honesty should've stopped it...a poor penalty from Gillespie, but it's 1-0 COLCHESTER
'30 - Here comes Lowe on the left flank, beats his defender, cuts to the middle, cracks it short side, SCORES! 1-1 and Lowe ties it up for Sheffield Wednesday!
1-1 at HALFTIME, a close game, both teams have had lots of chances, looks like I'll be in a similar position in the standings to them (hopefully the promotion spots!)
'76 - Now Minniecon chasing a through ball, gets to it first, being harassed by Sheffield defenders, STILL on the ball, edge of the 18, curls it IN OFF THE POST! TAHJ MINNIECON WITH HIS FIRST AS A COLCHESTER UNITED PLAYER, AND IT'S A BIG ONE! 2-1 to COLCHESTER
'83 - Minniecon wins a header at the top of the box, fakes out his marker, blasts it...TOP CORNER! GOLLASSSOOOOOO INDEED! 3-1 TO COLCHESTER!
FINAL WHISTLE - COLCHESTER 3-1 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
            "
I feel it was a great result against a strong opponent. This was by no means an easy match, whatsoever. It was our third game in seven days, and now I'm real glad we've got some time off before we play Bury. Minniecon showed everyone today why he should be in England, in a top-class minor league like ours. We've got 4 points from our first two matches, both against difficult opponents. I'm really happy about our performance thus far."
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Kayode Odejayi's suspension is finally over! Two games seemed like an eternity! We really missed him (even though our 6 points in the 2 games he missed didn't show it!) up front! With him and Minniecon up front, I could move Gillespie back to an attacking midfield position...or...sell him off? Hehe....
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just sold Steven Gillespie (64) for $1.2 million. I know, I know, he's my best striker, most goals, yahdayahda. His transfer value was only $775K, so when Cheltenham Town came calling with 160% of his original transfer value, I had to accept it. I am now looking for some midfield depth, perhaps a speedy African? I just sent out feelers on Sainy Nyassi, a speedy midfielder with the MLS' New England Revolution. Even without Gillespie up front, I've still got Henderson (64) and Antonio (64) on the bench! Lots of depth at striker for Colchester!
            ----------------------------------------------------------------------
            @ Bury (League Game #3)
This is going to be a tough one. Bury come into this match tied with us on 4 points, so a victory here could separate us from at least one team early in the year. They play a very defensive 5-2-1-2, with 8 players in their own half. On a bright note, we retain the services of Kayode Odejayi in this game (he'll play up front with Minniecon...a great one-two punch for League One)!
            GAMETIME
'33 - Welshman Lloyd James gives the U's a one-nil advantage! James with an absolute crack from outside the 18-yard box! 1-0 to COLCHESTER!!
HALFTIME - 1-0 for Colchester. Good half, but Bury definitely have more offensive oomph than their 5-2-1-2 suggests. Going to have to be very careful in the 2nd half.
'57 - Matt Heath goes in hard, lucky to only receive a yellow...if you recall he got red-carded in my game with Beira-Mar, he's having some discipline issues early on this season, going to have to keep an eye on him.
'66 - Here's Cullen...right-flank for Bury, crosses to the middle for Marple, Marple, turns, fires, OFF THE POST! Great opportunity for Bury there!
'90 - FINAL PLAY OF THE GAME - Bury's Cullen heads a corner off the crossbar and out of play!
Final Whistle - Colchester 1-0 Bury
"It was a real close game, too close. If a couple bounces went the way one expects them to, then we might've lost that one, or at least tied it. The football gods smiled upon us today, and if they hadn't we wouldn't be ahead of Bury in the standings like we are. Very proud of the boys, the way they sacrificed offense for defense there in the 2nd half. Good three points. Key, if you can call points earned this early in a season that."
            --------------------------------------------------------------------

So, after three league game I sit on 7 points, solidly in the promotion/playoff picture. What do you guys think of my start? Any cheap fast guys I could transfer in? Any and all feedback much appreciated!

.Colchester Utd Knocked Out Of Carling Cup
3-1 Loss a shock, says manager

Colchester Utd will have an entire season of football to get through before they can think about the Carling Cup (Johnstone Paint Trophy?) again. The squad was shocked 3-1 by League Two side Shrewsbury at CC Stadium yesterday.

Shrewsbury, who currently sit mired in a nonchalant 16th out of 24 in League Two, came out strong against the Championship-promotion hopefuls. They opened the scoring in the 37th minute on a header by striker Strong, and they led 1-0 at halftime.

Brian Coker, enjoying a rare glimpse of field time, knotted the game at 1's with a fantastic strike from 25 yards out which struck the inside of the post before hitting mesh in the 51st minute.

It seemed as though Colchester were going to bounce back, however they didn't. Shrewsbury, led by the pace of John Taylor in the midfield, powered through the Colchester Utd back four as though they were merely pylons. Goals in the '63 and '81 put Shresbury ahead and helped them stay there.

"All in all, a pretty dismal effort by our boys. That team isn't even a GOOD League Two side and they shredded our back four to bits out there. Atrocious. Now with the tight schedule we've got we have to turn around and play Yeovil in three days. This is going to be very tight," complained Colchester boss Carlos Verde.

              On a brighter note, the U's picked up New England Revolution midfielder Sainey Nyassi, a speedy player who can really pick the pace up. The club also parted ways with John O'Toole, who had been nothing but spectacular to this point;
"John is a great League One player, powerful on the ball, strong shot. But we are gearing up for a run at the Championship promotion spot here. We'll be competing against Premier League-level competition. Nyassi has the pace, John doesn't. That's as simple as it gets," cut Carlos Verde's words. O'Toole had already scored once and had two assists in his first three caps of the season. Nyassi should bring the element of pace, as Verde so delicately mentioned.

Next up is Yeovil Town on Saturday the 27th. Yeovil Town sit in 16th place in the npower League One, with 1 win and 2 losses. A victory for either side could change their season. Big game. Starting Line-Up for Colchester :
              GK Williams (66)
              RWB Wilson (62)
              RCB Wynne (66)
              CB Okuonghae (65)
              LCB Heath (62)
              LWB Coker (60)
              RCM Nyassi (62)*
              CM Wordsworth (62)
              LCM Izzet (62)
              RS Odejayi (62)
              LS Minniecon (62)
              * - Colchester debut

Full Time here at CC Stadium...a disappointing 0-0 draw with Yeovil Town. Nyassi didn't stand out, looked out of form actually
Missed O'Toole's strength in the middle, and Minniecon had to be subbed at half, should've checked his stamina rating before getting him...maybe that's why he was so cheap? X(

@ Norwich (League Cup Rd. 2)
Going in this was obviously going to be a difficult match to get a result in. An EPL opponent, away from home, on two days rest. I had to sit Minniecon and Nyassi (my two fastest players) ahead of our date with Leyton Orient two days after this game. The boys surprised me...

'13 - Here is Crofts for Norwich, passes through to Guerrero, shoots, OFF THE CROSSBAR and out for a goalkick!
'27 - Guerrero with it now, reverses to Simeon Jackson, all Norwich here early, Jackson shoots...OFF THE POST!
'39 - Here comes Odejayi on the counter, first real foray into Norwich's defensive half for Colchester here at the 39 minute mark! Odejayi loses the ball on a hard tackle, and he goes down hard! Kayode Odejayi is staying down on the pitch...not a good sign for Colchester fans!
                  -------HALFTIME-------
Had to sub Odejayi off, he looks like he could be out for a real length of time...somehow still tied nil-nil, despite having been outshot 9-1 by the Canaries in the first half.
                  -------2ND HALF-------
'71 - Here again is Crofts, he centers to Guerrero, slotted through for Holt, Holt, PARRIED AWAY WELL by Williams in the Colchester goal!
'88 - Norwich AGAIN on the wing, this is how they score their EPL goals and they're trying it again here, Crofts on the left wing, swings it in, meets Jackson's head, BUT IT FLIES INCHES OVER THE BAR!
                  ------EXTRA TIME------
'99 - Now on the ball it's Crofts, he crosses it into the middle, it's Morison, IT'S IN! THE CANARIES BREAK THE DEADLOCK ON A POWERFUL HEADER OFF THE HEAD OF MORISON! 1:0 NOR
'120 - Now on it is Jackson, Norwich feisty as they counter, only two Colchester defenders back...Jackson, plays it to Crofts on the far wing, he cuts into the middle, delays, Williams goes down, Crofts still waiting, a cheeky chip...AND NORWICH, HAVE BOOKED THEIR PLACE, IN THE LEAGUE CUP 3RD ROUND! 2:0 NOR
                  ------------------------
"You know I really felt the boys had a great game under these circumstances, not sure why the FA had us playing two games in four days but that's their decision. I know Norwich had six days off before this match! We defended well, Williams was a rock in goal, and I think today we showed the world why we belong in a higher league, we took a top-flight team to extra time. Real proud of the boys!"

                  League Game #5 - @ Leyton Orient
I'll just quickly skim through this game, because it wasn't exactly exciting (just two shots the entire game):
                  '71 - Wordsworth's beautiful strike from 30 yards out puts us in a well-deserved lead. 1:0 COL
                  ----------------------
"We played pretty flat today, but considering it was our third game in seven days, I'm just glad we got three points. We're all pretty exhausted from the travel, and I, as with the boys, am just looking forward to getting back home."

I now sit at 3-2-0, 3 wins 2 draws no losses.

                  Upcoming Fixtures :
Tue. Sept. 6th - v. Wycombe - Obviously the #2 team has to beat the #24 team convincingly, especially at home. They've scored one goal in their first five games. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Sat. Sept. 10th - @ Tranmere Rovers - Tranmere Rovers sit only three points behind me in the standings, and seem to be inconsistent. They lost 3-1 at home against MK Dons, then won 2-0 away at S****horpe. Very tricky team to read, I still go in expecting three points.

Sat. Sept. 17th - v. Rochdale - FINALLY A FULL WEEK'S REST FOR MY PLAYERS! Rochdale currently sit just one point behind me in the standings, if they're still that close to me come the 17th of September, this game could be a great opportunity. Marshall and Grimes, their two strikers, have two goals apiece this season and could be dangerous.

Sat. Sept. 24th - @ Walsall - Walsall look like they'll be a part of the relegation battle this year, and for good reason. With a team rating of just one and a half stars, this team probably belongs in npower League Two, not League One. They've lost three in a row and look ripe for the picking judging by their results (0-2, 0-1, 0-3). Need three points.

This will bring me to the end of September, by which time I'll have 10 league games in the books and will have a better idea of whether I'll get an auto. promotion spot or have to duel someone in a play-off for it! I should go 4-0-0 in those four games, but it's football, one can never be certain!

Thanks! Yeah in all honesty I was outplayed by Norwich, but I hung in there! Minniecon is unfortunately a bit low on stamina , so I haven't been starting him often. Odejayi hasn't found the net in a while either...imagine how much damage I could do offensively if all my players played the way they're capable of?

Wordsworth picks up his second goal of the season on a beautiful curler from just outside the 18 yard box in the 22nd minute, and that's all I would need, as Wycombe played to their rank in the standings and never threatened me at all the entire game. Sitting in 2nd in the standings...

So now...I sit in a tie for 2nd place with Sheffield Wednesday, we've both got 15 points. Probably should've done better against a mid-table Tranmere side, but the boys were tired and it wasn't a complete disaster as we didn't lose.

This is it. I'm lowering the difficulty. Call me soft, changing after two losses and all, but with my roster, it's just not realistic that I should be dominated possession-wise by a team like Walsall (1 1/2 stars btw) playing like freakin' Spain. It's bullcrap. I'm now on the outside looking in on the playoff picture, and rather disappointed. Down to semipro for me...
