    "In unity and peace!" (CM00/01)

First of all, that's Championship Manager 2000/01 (a Soccer game, for those who are unaware of the pre-Football Manager era). I've recently rediscovered the game and felt it would be a relatively easy write-up for a dynasty. The game itself is very much a "pick up and play game" and doesn't take much time to set up and get playing. It's a very simple game as you'll be able to tell by some of the screenshots I take and upload It also isn't as specific as the games are today, which is to be expected. Anyway, on we go. I'll be managing Malta, which is where the title of this comes from as it's in the national anthem.

Malta is located in Southern Europe, just south of Italy, as shown on this lovely map here. As you can see, it's not that big of a country so my talent pool is limited. Looks pretty nice though!

We are ranked at 121 in the world out of 205 teams, which isn't that bad but I'll be hoping to break 100. Now Malta are not one of the best European teams, and it was still the same back in 2000. They don't have any hugely recognisable players and lack a lot of quality throughout the squad. To be honest, the only player I recognise is Michael Mifsud, who played for Coventry in the English Championship in the late 2000s.

As I'm starting at the start of the 2000-01 season, I start at the qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, with the group here:

My aim for this qualification period is to try and attempt to get 4th place. Championship Manager is a little bit easier than the current Football Manager series, so points are easier to come by. What is also nice about this game is that I'm able to do "print-outs" which result in that I can use code to help with results.

That is the introductory post over anyway. Forthcoming posts will be a lot more structured and look a bit slicker than this.

I'd like any suggestions on improvements I can make to the layout of my posts etc or just any thoughts in general please!

Unused subs: Cini, Gregory, Zahra, Nwoko

Well, I didn't see this coming! An early foul in the penalty area by Northern Irish captain Neil Lennon on Nenad Veselj gave veteran midfielder Joe Brincat an opportunity to give us an early lead which he duly took to give me a dream start as Malta manager. 18 minutes later it get even better as Brincat added a second to give us a 2-0 lead. We held onto that lead throughout the game after withstanding a late siege upon our goal. Joe Brincat was given the man of the match after his performance although special mention for me goes to debutant Chris Camilleri after his performance in a very solid Maltese midfield.

    Group 3 scores:
    Bulgaria 2-0 Czech Republic
    Iceland 1-1 Denmark
    N. Ireland 0-2 Malta

Can we finish qualifying now please?

A few changes made from last time out, some forced due to injury and some made by choice. Those players brought in are in red have replaced Sylla, Tellus, Agius and Okonkwo.

World Cup 2002 Qualifier: Bulgaria 3-1
      Malta
      Iotov 3, Tzvetanov 29, Iordanov 49 - Mifsud 21

Barry - Cremona (Gregory 49), D. Debono, Bencini, Buhagiar - Brincat, Veselj (Galea, 49), C. Camilleri - A. Debono, Mifsud, Mallia

Unused subs: Haber, Sixsmith, Zahra, Nwoko, Stevens

Pretty much the complete opposite of the Northern Ireland game as we start poorly and although we equalise, we never seemed in the game and lose to a much better Bulgaria side. Velko Iotov made Darren Debono look silly for the first goal after going past him and opening the scoring after just 3 minutes. However, if we were going to lose we were going to put up a fight as George Mallia crossed to Michael Mifsud who was in space to slot home his first International goal to make it 1-1 on the night. Another mistake by a Malta defender gave Bulgaria the lead as Martin Cremona gave the ball away cheaply to Zanko Tzvetanov to make it 2-1 to Bulgaria. It did not get better after the break after a through ball by the Bulgarian Iotov, a constant thorn in the Maltese defence, gave Ivailo Iordanov a chance which he duly took and completed the scoring on 49 minutes to make it 3-1.

      Group 3 Scores:
      Bulgaria 3-1 Malta
      Czech Republic 2-0 Iceland
      N. Ireland 1-2 Denmark

World Cup 2002 Qualifier: Malta 4-1 Czech Republic
      Mallia 33, Brincat pen 49, Mifsud 54, Nwoko 88 - Lokvenc 29

Barry - Bencini, D. Debono, Sant Fournier, Buhagiar (Gregory, 77) - Camilleri, Veselj, Brincat - Mallia, Mifsud, A. Debono (Nwoko, 65)

Unused subs: Haber, Sixsmith, Galea, Zahra, Stevens

This was one of those games where if you were managing Czech Republic, you would be currently throwing something against the wall, kicking something against the wall all the while speaking some quite foul language. My keeper getting man of the match and his opposite number getting the worse match rating in the match tells half the story. Well, at least we can score! After a very quiet first 25 minutes, Vratislav Lokvenc opened the scoring for the Czechs with a ball "struck with fury" as the match reports says. However, like the Bulgaria game, we had a reply, this time from George Mallia after a lovely ball from the in-form Chris Camilleri who again had a good game. Going into half time drawing seemed like a good result to me but not to the team as Michael Mifsud went through on goal, only to be brought down by the very poor Czech goalkeeper Jaromir Blazek and up stepped Brincat to score the second penalty in this campaign and his third in total. Instead of giving a kick up the backside to the Czechs, only 5 minutes later Malta added a third through a Michael Mifsud effort. The Czechs tried to reply but couldn't through a Karel Poborsky effort which hit the woodwork in the 67th minute. To add insult to injury, Malta added a 4th late on through substitute Chucks Nwoko.

      Group 3 Scores:
      Denmark 2-1 Bulgaria
      Iceland 4-1 N. Ireland
      Malta 4-1 Czech Republic

What's going on with the Czechs!?

        Friendly match: Malta 3-0 Armenia
        Veselj 18, Busuttil 27, 45

Barry - Cremona, Sylla, Bencini, Buhagiar - Brincat, Veselj, Camilleri - Busuttil, Mifsud, Mallia

Unused Subs: Haber, Gregory, Sixsmith, Galea, Zahra, Nwoko, D. Debono, A. Debono

Considering my results I felt we should win this game and we did, and with relative ease thanks to a Maltese midfield which dominated the game. However it was the wily old man Carmel Busuttil who stole the show, with the highest capped player in Malta history showing he can still produce the goods with a 2 goal haul and an assist. Veselj opened the scoring after 18 minutes thanks to a cross from Busuttil after an opening to a game Armenia seemed happy to defend their goal. 9 minutes later, the goalscorer Veselj turned provider for Busuttil who made it 2-0 and Armenian hopes were declining. A poor Armenian performance only got worse just before half time with a Veselj shot being parried away to the feet of Busuttil who accepted the gift and effectively ended the game before half time. The second half was a drab affair, with Malta content to sit on their lead and keep a clean sheet with the Armenians still playing poorly.

World Cup 2002 Qualifier: Malta 1-3 Denmark
          Nwoko 90 (2) - Møller 25, 28, 90 (1)

Barry - Forace, Sylla, Bencini (Zammit, 57), Buhagiar - Brincat, Veselj, C. Camilleri (D. Camilleri, 57) - Busuttil (Nwoko, 87), Mifsud, Mallia
Unused subs: Haber, Cremona, Mattocks, D. Debono

Our run of good form comes to an emphatic end against the Danes. The first half we never turned up and the Danish wingers Dennis Rommedahl and Martin Jørgensen ripped us to shreds. Denmark opened the scoring on the 25 minute mark after a jinking run by Jørgensen ended up him crossing the ball for Peter Møller to get his first of the day. The second was much like the first, instead of the other side with Rommedahl this time going on a run and getting the ball in the box for Møller to put Denmark 2-0 up just 3 minutes after the first. Although Malta improved after the break, it was Denmark who issued the final nail in the coffin with Rommedahl crossing from deep to let Møller complete his hat-trick. A slick passing move involving Forace, Brincat and Veselj let Nwoko through on goal and after just coming on, he salvaged some pride with a powerful volley that meant the Danes did not go back home with a clean sheet.

          Group 3 Scores:
          Bulgaria 0-0 Iceland
          Malta 1-3 Denmark
          N. Ireland 1-1 Czech Republic

Performing above expectations, but Denmark take control of the group

World Cup 2002 Qualifier: Malta 3-0 Iceland
            Busuttil 22, Mifsud 35, Mallia 67

Barry - Forace, Sylla (Okwonkwo, 61), Bencini, Buhagiar - Brincat, Veselj (D. Camilleri, 61), C. Camilleri - Busuttil (Nwoko, 80), Mifsud, Mallia

Unused subs: Haber, Zammit, Mattocks, A. Debono

A pretty routine win, which is the sort of wins managers love! Carmel Busuttil again defied his age to open the scoring thanks to an assist from Chris Camilleri on 22 minutes. On 35, Michael Mifsud got in on the act thanks to a cross from left-back Richard Buhagiar who found Mifsud in the penalty area who slotted home to make it 2-0 to Malta. A double save by the Icelandic goalkeeper Arni Gautur Arason wasn't enough to stop a third, as shots by Mifsud and David Camilleri were saved, but George Mallia's effort couldn't be stopped and he completed the scoring on 67 minutes.

            Group 3 Scores:
            Bulgaria 2-0 N. Ireland
            Czech Republic 1-1 Denmark
            Malta 3-0 Iceland

A slip-up by Denmark lets Bulgaria back in, and bizarrely, us!

              June 2001:

Two games for us in June with the return game at Iceland and a trip to Denmark. Here's the squad, just a change of goalkeepers with Cini out and Darmanin back in, although neither would play.

World Cup 2002 Qualifier: Iceland 1-0 Malta
              Vidarsson 63

              Barry - Forace (Okonkwo, 76), Sylla , Bencini, Buhagiar - Brincat (D. Camilleri, 76), Veselj, C. Camilleri - Busuttil , Mifsud (Nwoko, 62), Mallia

Unused subs: Haber, Zammit, Mattocks, A. Debono

This was a very disappointing defeat and the first time we've been held goalless. An early penalty appeal by Malllia was turned down and a controversial disallowed goal for Michael Mifsud as Busuttil was judged to be offside in the build-up. It was the second half where the first, and only, goal was scored. A shot by Thordur Gudjonsson was pushed away by Barry, but only into the path of Arnar Vidarsson who slotted home. After this, Iceland went on the defensive and seemed perfectly happy with the 1-0 scoreline and for all Malta's efforts, that is how the score ended.

              Group 3 Scores:
              Denmark 4-0 Czech Republic
              Iceland 1-0 Malta
              N. Ireland 1-0 Bulgaria

World Cup 2002 Qualifier: Denmark 5-2 Malta
              Bisgaard 8, 61, Gravesen 33, Møller 52, Sand 70 - Mifsud 18, Galea 90

Barry - Okonkwo, Sylla, Bencini (Zammit, 65), Buhagiar - Brincat, Veselj (Galea, 20), C. Camilleri - Busuttil (Nwoko, 56), Mifsud, Mallia

Unused Subs: Haber, Cremona, D. Camilleri, A. Debono

Two poor performances in a row lead us to our second consecutive defeat as Denmark demolish us. A Denmark corner floated in by Ebbe Sand gave Denmark their winner as Morten Bisgaard rose above everyone to head the ball in the back of the net to put Denmark 1-0 up. A Joe Brincat pass to Michael Mifsud however gave Malta an equaliser as Mifsud volleyed the ball to equalise for Malta after 18 minutes. An Ulrik Laursen cross to Thomas Gravesen gave Denmark the lead again after 33 minutes and a near enough carbon copy on 52 minutes, but this time to Møller put Denmark 3-1 up. Things only got worse for Malta as another Ebbe Sand assist, again to Bisgaard gave Denmark a 4th in the game.A 5th was added on 70 minutes by that man Sand again from a Michael Madsen assist. A Michael Galea consolation goal gave Malta something to cheer about on 90 minutes, but this was a poor result.

              Group 3 Scores:
              Czech Republic 2-1 N. Ireland
              Denmark 5-2 Malta
              Iceland 1-1 Bulgaria

Denmark are all but qualified, but who will get the playoff spot in 2nd? It's wide open!

A home match first against Bulgaria followed up by a trip to the Czech Republic for Malta in September. There are 3 new faces, all under 19, including 16 year old Vasily Celina.

A change of formation brought a change in fortunes as we manage to beat Bulgaria, albeit with a last minute winner! A magnificent early individual by Velko Iotov put Bulgaria 1-0 after only 13 minutes. But as has happened before, Malta was able to hit back. Nenad Veselj hit back just 2 minutes later thanks from a cross from Michael Galea. Jonathan Holland had a goal ruled out just before half time as Galea was offside. However, the next goal came on 75 minutes where Chris Camilleri, often the provider, did his usual thing, assisting a Michael Galea goal which gave Malta a 2-1 lead. This did not last though, as Milen Petkov thought he had rescued a point with just 4 minutes of the 90 left with another brilliant individual effort. A magnificent team goal, involving Camilleri, Mattocks, Mifsud and finally finishing with Nenad Veselj putting the ball in the back of the net with virtually the last kick of the game, giving Malta an absolutely vital 3 points.

                Group 3 Scores:
                Denmark 5-0 N. Ireland
                Iceland 1-2 Czech Republic
                Malta 3-2 Bulgaria

Denmark qualify for the 2002 World Cup

2002 World Cup Qualifier: Czech Republic 2-0 Malta
                Nedved 60, Smicer 71, Lokvenc 77

Haber - Okonkwo, Bencini, Sylla, Buhagiar - C. Camilleri, Veselj (Nwoko, 45), Brincat (Holland, 69) - Galea, Mifsud, Mallia (Celilna, 69)

Unused subs: Darmamin, Cremona, Bonnici, Mattocks

We may have lost 3-0, but we didn't actually play that poor. This has pretty much proved my big win over them earlier in the campaign was a fluke. The first half was a very tight affair with neither side wanting to commit to attack at all. It was on 60 minutes when a Pavel Hapal cross led to Pavel Nedved opening the scoring for the Czech Republic. This seemed to open up the game and Czech Republic added a second 11 minutes later. A Vladimir Smicer run, coupled with a 1-2 with Marek Heinz led Smicer towards the goal and he finished expertly. Only 6 minutes later Czech Republic added a third and effectively ended the game through a Milan Lokvenc effort.

                Group 3 Scores:
                Bulgaria 0-0 Denmark
                Czech Republic 3-0 Malta
                N. Ireland 3-1 Iceland

Well, I'm where I expect to be, but the Czech's play Bulgaria so if that ends a draw, I must beat N. Ireland to have a chance at a playoff.

A game I really thought we would win turns out to be a loss instead. A late Bulgaria goal would have been lovely if we were winning. We finish the campaign in 4th place, so my aim has been completed, but it is massively disappointing.

                  Czech Republic 1-1 Bulgaria
                  Denmark 1-0 Iceland
                  Malta 1-2 Northern Ireland

A 4th place finish for Malta and as the table shows, we just conceded too many goals to have a chance.

                    Friendly: Malta 2-1 Armenia
                    Mifsud 35, Galea 58 - Shakhgeldyan 65

Haber - Forace, Okonkwo (Sixsmith, 58), Bencini, Buhagiar (Bonnici, 46) - Galea, Brincat, C. Camilleri (Hasler, 58) - Sorrentino, Mifsud, Nwoko

A relatively comfortable victory finishes off 2001 for us as Michael Galea stole the show. A cross by Richard Buhagiar found Galea in the box who in turn found Michael Mifsud who opened the scoring 10 minutes before half time. A superb individual effort by Galea who went past 3 Armenian players before slotting home to make it a 2 goal lead after 58 minutes. Armenia hit back just 7 minutes later however with a through ball by Armenian midfielder Hovane Haroutiounian put Armen Shakhgeldyan through on goal who volleyed home to make it 2-1 and that is how it finished.
