Re: A New Era in the UFC

UFC Fight Night 2: Johnson vs. Cormier Recap

    Josh Thomson vs. Ross Pearson:
It was a very even first round, as Thomson and Pearson both landed solid strikes, got a takedown apiece, and got a feel for each other. Pearson landed more significant strikes in the round. Pearson ended up on top of Thomson in round two, and had some excellent ground and pound from half guard and full mount. He attempted an arm triangle, but failed to sink it in. He was outstruck by Thomson easily over the rest of the round. But in round three, Thompson rocked Pearson and knocked him down, pounced on him, but couldn’t finish him by TKO. He rocked him again a minute later, got another knockdown, and still couldn’t finish. Thomson’s late onslaught of strikes helped him come from behind and win a majority decision.
Result: Josh Thomson def. Ross Pearson by majority decision.

#10 Frank Mir vs. Minotauro Nogueira:

In a rematch between Mir and his mentor, in which Mir submitted one of the best submission experts ever, it was a dream for jiu-jitsu fans. Not much of this fight was on the feet, as there were several takedowns and submission attempts. Nogueira got the better of his former apprentice this time, though, as he locked up an armbar from the mounted position and defeated Mir, and a rubber match will surely be in store one day.
Result: Minotauro Nogueira def. #10 Frank Mir at 1:16 of Round 2 by SUB.

#6 Eddie Alvarez vs. #9 Jim Miller:
In Eddie Alvarez’s highly-anticipated UFC debut, he was handed a tough battle vs. UFC veteran Jim Miller. Miller, a long-time UFC vet, had plans of spoiling Alvarez’s debut. Miller and Alvarez split takedowns and submission attempts in round one, and never really gained a substantial advantage over one another. In the second round, Miller’s grappling proved to be better, as he took Alvarez down and locked in a Peruvian necktie and submitted Alvarez in his UFC Debut.
Result: #9 Jim Miller def. #6 Eddie Alvarez at 1:32 of Round 2 by SUB.

#2 Vitor Belfort vs. #6 Nick Diaz:
The evening’s co-main event showcased two of the best strikers in the UFC’s Middleweight division, as Belfort and Diaz went toe to toe in a back and forth battle. Diaz had the first stunner of the fight late in the first round, rocking Belfort in the last minute of the round with a spinning backfist. Diaz came out swinging in round two, landed several hard strikes, and took Belfort down. Vitor attempted a triangle from the bottom, and almost had it locked in, but lost it at the very last moment. Round two was very even, as was round three. It was anyone’s fight going to the decision, and the judges unanimously saw Diaz as the victor, with there being two 29-28’s and a 30-27 in his favor.
Result: #6 Nick Diaz def. #2 Vitor Belfort by unanimous decision.

#1 Anthony Johnson vs. #2 Daniel Cormier:
This fight was easily Fight of the Night. Johnson came out swinging, and rocked Cormier and knocked him down less than 30 seconds into the fight! Cormier recovered, and later on in the round rocked Johnson with a liver shot. Both men came out swinging in the second round, and Cormier knocked Johnson down two minutes in. He rocked him with about 15 seconds left in round two as well, but the bell saved Johnson. They continued to trade blows in round three, and by the end of the round they were exhausted. It was so close at this point. Johnson just dealt more damage in the fourth round, and Cormier’s shots were becoming less and less effective, aside from the one punch he landed with 45 seconds left that rocked Johnson. Despite both guys being exhausted, they gave it their all in round five, and Johnson rocked Cormier with three minutes left. He survived to the end of the fight, where he unfortunately would lose by a 49-46 Unanimous decision. This was still early fight of the year favorite, and one of the best fights that has ever taken place. Anthony Johnson will fight for the belt.
Result: #1 Anthony Johnson def. #2 Daniel Cormier by unanimous decision.

FOTN: Anthony Johnson vs. Daniel Cormier.
    KOTN: None
    SOTN: Jim Miller

UFC 2: Weidman vs. Silva / Dillashaw vs. Barao Announced

For the first time since the UFC implemented new rule changes, there will be two title fights in one event, as Middleweight Champ Chris Weidman will defend his title vs. Anderson Silva, and Bantamweight Champ TJ Dillashaw will defend his belt vs. Renan Barao.

"The UFC is very excited for this card, even the under card will be stacked for this event." said UFC President Dana White. Here is the whole card:

Main Event: (C) Chris Weidman vs. #1 Anderson Silva
Co-Main Event: (C) TJ Dillashaw vs. #1 Renan Barao
Main Card: #2 Gilbert Melendez vs. #4 Khabib Nurmagomedov
Under Card: #5 Uriah Faber vs. #7 Brad Pickett
Under Card: #8 Matt Brown vs. #10 Mike Pyle
Under Card: #7 Rampage Jackson vs. Chael Sonnen

"The UFC is also pleased to announce that Chael Sonnen will be coming out of retirement and has signed a four-fight contract with the UFC," said White in a press release after the unveiling of the card. This is a stacked card, hopefully it will live up to the hype.

Re: A New Era in the UFC

UFC 2: Weidman vs. Silva / Dillashaw vs. Barao Recap

#7 Rampage Jackson vs. Chael Sonnen:
The first round was a very even round. Jackson easily outstruck Sonnen and landed more significant strikes, but Sonnen had more takedowns and attempted three submissions. Rampage took control of the fight in the second round, defending all of Sonnen’s takedowns and landing a high percentage of his strikes. In the third round, Rampage knocked Sonnen down with an uppercut and failed to submit him via armbar, but he rocked him again later in the round. He would come within seconds of submitting Sonnen by a triangle, but the bell saved Sonnen. It was to no avail though, as Jackson won by a 30-27 Unanimous Decision.
Result: #7 Rampage Jackson def. Chael Sonnen by Unanimous Decision.

#8 Matt Brown vs. #10 Mike Pyle:
Brown and Pyle spent the first round of this fight feeling each other out, neither gaining a significant advantage, until Pyle kneed Brown in the liver, and it was such a hard blow that Brown verbally tapped.
Result: #10 Mike Pyle def. #8 Matt Brown at 4:53 of Round 1 by TKO.

#5 Uriah Faber vs. #7 Brad Pickett:
Faber and Pickett both came into this fight looking to make a run at the bantamweight title, and they both did an excellent job of bringing it to the octagon and leaving it all there. Pickett held the advantage at the end of round one, after taking down Faber twice, knocking him down once, and rocking him a total of twice. Faber rebounded extremely well in round two, as he rocked Pickett with a spinning backfist and knocked him out with an overhand left!
Result: #5 Uriah Faber def. #7 Brad Pickett at 3:22 of Round 2 by KO.

#2 Gilbert Melendez vs. #4 Khabib Nurmagomedov:
Khabib Nurmagomedov came into his bout with Melendez undefeated and looking to make a statement in this new system the UFC had implemented, and he attacked the former Strikeforce Lightweight champion relentlessly. He used takedowns, ground and pound and short, powerful strikes in the fight, and did a great job of taking away Melendez’s range in the first round. He knocked Melendez down with a minute to go in the round, but couldn’t finish, and 30 seconds later he got knocked down by Melendez and one shot later he could not go on. Gilbert Melendez all of a sudden wins by TKO, handing Nurmagomedov his first career loss.
Result: #2 Gilbert Melendez def. #4 Khabib Nurmagomedov at 4:19 of Round 1 by TKO.

        (C) TJ Dillashaw vs. #1 Renan Barao:
In our co-main event and Bantamweight championship bout, two top-10 P4P fighters in TJ Dillashaw and Renan Barao squared off. The first round was as even as it can get. Dillashaw gained some momentum in round two, but lost it when Barao landed a counter left hand and knocked him down. Even despite that, he won the round. Dillashaw was knocked down yet again by Barao in round three, but from his back he failed to sink in an arm triangle. Dillashaw would go on to take Barao down four times in the round. In the fourth round, Barao kneed Dillashaw in the face when he went in for a takedown and rocked him, but Dillashaw survived. Barao won round four, and it was scored two rounds to two going into the fifth. In the fifth, Dillashaw did an excellent job of blocking, parrying, and countering Barao’s significant strikes, and he took him down twice. But in a shocking decision, Renan Barao was given the belt by a 48-47 score! Dana White said “Renan Barao did not win that fight. TJ Dillashaw won. He will get an immediate rematch for his belt.”
Result: #1 Renan Barao def. (C) TJ Dillashaw by Unanimous Decision.

        (C) Chris Weidman vs. #1 Anderson Silva:
Anderson Silva came out of the gates swinging away. He landed several significant strikes before Weidman took him down and pounded on him and caused significant damage. Silva got it back to the feet though and picked Weidman apart from the outside. The fight remained on the feet in round two, and Weidman rocked Silva with a strong shot to the head. Silva survived. The champion got complacent with his defense and Silva made him pay with several significant strikes to end round two. Silva landed head kick after head kick in the third, but Weidman managed to take him down three times. The two went back-and-forth in the fourth round, leaving the fifth round open to anyone who wanted it. In the fifth round, Weidman took Silva down and ended up choking him unconscious with an arm triangle! Chris Weidman remains the UFC Middleweight champ!
Result: (C) Chris Weidman def. #1 Anderson Silva at 1:26 of Round 5 by SUB.

Re: A New Era in the UFC

UFC Fight Night 3: Tate vs. Zingano Recap

            Tarec Saffiedine vs. Josh Koscheck:
The first round was dominated by Koscheck’s outstanding wrestling. Koscheck took Saffiedine five times and inflicted loads of damage on the ground. Koscheck gained four more takedowns in round two, and was nine-for-nine on takedowns through two rounds. Saffiedine dominated the final round from a striking standpoint, but it wouldn’t be enough to get the win. Koscheck wins by unanimous decision.
Result: Josh Koscheck def. Tarec Saffiedine by Unanimous Decision.

#9 Erik Perez vs. #10 Mike Easton:
In a very uneventful first round, the only breathtaking moment was when Erik Perez almost submitted Easton by an armbar from the mounted crucifix position. Easton did an excellent job of damaging Perez with kicks in that round though, and it translated into round two. He combined excellent striking with takedowns and was up 2-0 through two rounds. Easton sealed his victory when he rocked Perez with a front kick with 30 seconds left, and although he couldn’t finish, he would win by Unanimous Decision.
Result: #10 Mike Easton def. #9 Erik Perez by Unanimous Decision.

#8 Gegard Mousasi vs. Michael Bisping:
In a battle of two of the most disciplined strikers in the UFC, we got exactly what was expected; a fist fight. Mousasi held the edge after the first round, landing several counter strikes to the body and exhibiting good takedown defense. The two fighters began opening up in round two, both landing clean strikes off counters and dealing damage. It was dead even after two rounds. Bisping rocked Mousasi with three minutes left, but could not get the finish. It could go either way after three, and the judges decided that the victor was Michael Bisping! He won it unanimously.
Result: Michael Bisping def. #8 Gegard Mousasi by unanimous decision.

#2 Junior dos Santos vs. #6 Travis Browne
The two heavyweights throwing down in this bout went at each other from the very beginning. This fight was exciting from the beginning as the two stood and traded blows before it hit the mat. There, Browne tried to submit dos Santos, but couldn’t sink it in. Browne did a lot of damage with knees in that round. In round two, after two takedowns, Browne was able to lock in a kimura and submit Junior dos Santos!
Result: #6 Travis Browne def. #2 Junior dos Santos at 2:21 of Round 2 by SUB.

#1 Meisha Tate vs. #2 Cat Zingano
Tate and Zingano exchanged some harsh words before this fight, and it was a brawl once they stepped inside the Octagon. Tate held the advantage after one, landing several hard shots to the head and collecting a couple takedowns. In the second, not much happened until Zingano was within seconds of choking out Tate, but she lost it right before it was sunk in. Then with ten seconds left in the round, Zingano rocked Tate with a head kick, but did not attack and try to finish the fight. In the third round, Zingano would finally finish it, as she locked in an arm triangle and choked Tate unconscious. Cat Zingano will fight for the belt!
Result: #2 Cat Zingano def. #1 Meisha Tate at 1:16 of Round 3 by SUB.

Re: A New Era in the UFC

Thanks for the follow! I will help out.

First of all, I have an excel spreadsheet with the Top 10 rankings for each division (only 9 for Featherweight and 7 for Flyweight/Women's Bantamweight because of the lack of fighters in those divisions.) and I change the rankings after each fight. I also put their record since I started this on there, so whenever I go back later and update the rankings with their records I can factor in their record since I started this.

Picking the fights is easy, I choose what I want. I typically look at match ups that could possibly take place in the UFC because of rankings, no true #1 contender, and the undercard fights I usually pull someone not ranked in the top 10 and have them fight someone in the 7-10 range (like Mousasi vs. Bisping on the last card) and I also try to balance it out as I go along. Because the only fighters on the game are big names it kind of forces me to stack the cards, but I try really hard not to stack them too much.

                  I hope this helps.

UFC Fight Night 4: Johnson vs. Dodson Recap

#8 Dan Henderson vs. #9 Rashad Evans:
This fight showcased two of the best fighters in UFC history going toe to toe in the tail end of their careers. Both fighters were in the position to attempt and make one last run for the UFC title, so it was a big fight. Henderson outstruck Evans easily in round one, and he kept the fight close together as well, and took away Evans’ reach advantage. Early in round two Hendo rocked Rashad with his famous “H-Bomb” but couldn’t finish him. He rocked him a minute later, knocked him down, and pounded him down with a flurry of strikes to get a TKO victory.
Result: #8 Dan Henderson def. #9 Rashad Evans at 3:11 of Round 2 by TKO.

#7 Clay Guida vs. #9 Dennis Siver:
Guida and Siver put on an excellet fight for the fans, and the action picked up immediately in round one when Siver dropped Guida with a spinning kick to the body. Guida’s excellent chin was on display throughout the round, as almost any shot to the head that Siver landed did minimal damage. Siver’s technical striking topped Guida’s brawling nature in round one. Guida’s brawling got the better of Siver in round two, and he rocked Siver with 2 minutes left in the round. With ten seconds left though, he rocked Siver with an uppercut, knocked him down, and got a TKO victory!
Result: #7 Clay Guida def. #9 Dennis Siver at 4:55 of Round 2 by TKO.

#6 Tim Kennedy vs. #8 Yoel Romero:
Kennedy and Romero are both new to the UFC, and this was their first fight in the organization with some pretty high rankings. Whoever won this fight would likely be a win or two away from a title shot. Romero got the better of Kennedy in round one, dominating all facets of the fight; striking, grappling, and submissions. He attempted two submissions, had three takedowns, and outstruck Kennedy. Romero unsuccessfully attempted to submit Kennedy another time in round two, and Kennedy unsuccessfully tried to submit Romero twice. But after his submission attempt, he unleashed a load of strikes, and eventually TKO’d Yoel Romero.
Result: #6 Tim Kennedy def. #8 Yoel Romero at 2:55 of Round 2 by TKO.

#2 Ricardo Lamas vs. #3 Connor McGregor:
The winner of this fight was slated to face the winner of Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes for the world Featherweight belt. McGregor landed several hard leg kicks and body kicks, as well as exhibit good submission and takedown defense. Lamas could hardly touch him in the first round. Lamas did a good job of limiting the significant strikes landed by McGregor by landing three takedowns in round two and winning the round. It was a war in round three, as both fighters got beaten, bloodied, and landed huge strikes. McGregor rocked Lamas with a front kick with 55 seconds left, and got a takedown with 15 seconds left. The huge strike and the takedown would not be enough in the eyes of the judges however, and Ricardo Lamas earned a split decision victory.
Result: #2 Ricardo Lamas def. #3 Connor McGregor by Split Decision.

                        (C) Demetrius Johnson vs. #1 John Dodson
Coming into this fight, the champion Demetrius Johnson was the #2 P4P fighter in the world. John Dodson was looking to steal away his belt. He took it to the champ in the first round. Dodson is the fastest fighter in the UFC by far, and he used that speed to outstrike Johnson, and he exhibited superior takedown defense in that round. He led after one. He rocked Johnson in round two with a front kick, but did not pursue a finish and basically let Johnson recover easily. Johnson attempted to sink in a choke on Dodson but failed. Dodson led Johnson 2-0 after 2. Dodson rocked his opponent AGAIN in round three with another head kick, but couldn’t finish him. He rocked him one more time, and this time he knocked him down, and unloaded a fury of strikes to defeat Demetrius Johnson by TKO. John Dodson is your new Featherweight Champ!
Result: #1 John Dodson def. (C) Demetrius Johnson at 2:38 of Round 3 by TKO.

Aww man I was hoping Johnson would retain. Not a huge fan of Dodson ever since he was on TUF.

#2 Ian McCall vs. #5 Louis Gaudinot:
McCall dominated the first round from the get-go, as in the first minute he knocked Gaudinot down. He matched the knockdown with precise counter striking and defense. However in round two, with almost a minute left, Gaudinot stuffed a takedown, locked in a rear naked choke, and submitted Ian McCall!
Result: #5 Louis Gaudinot def. #2 Ian McCall at 4:20 of Round 2 by SUB.

#7 Michael Chiesa vs. #8 TJ Grant:
Chiesa dominated the first round with leg kicks, takedowns, and ground and pound. He inflicted loads of damage on Grant while not taking much of it. He also almost locked up a gogoplata in round two, but Grant somehow broke free of it. Grant then tried to submit Chiesa by a rear naked choke but failed. He also rocked Chiesa with two minutes left in the round. Both fighters did work in the round, but Grant did more damage. Nonetheless, they both were bloody messes. Chiesa attempted to lock in a knee bar in round 3, but lost it. Both men continued to add to the destruction, and it was an all out war at the end of it. It was very close, but all three judges felt that Michael Chiesa had won. He secured a unanimous decision.
Result: #7 Michael Chiesa def. #8 TJ Grant by Unanimous Decision.

#5 Glover Teixeira vs. Chael Sonnen:
Sonnen is coming off of a loss in a war with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and he was looking to turn his career around with a big win vs. Glover Teixeira. He had several takedowns in round one and he also rocked Teixiera with a liver kick. However near the end of the round, he had a takedown stuffed and he got caught in a choke, but got out of it at the very last instant. Both fighters went at each other in round two, and it was a complete war out there, like the preceding fight. It was very even after two. Both fighters went at it at the end of round three, and it was very even. The judges felt that Glover Teixeira had won. He wins unanimously.
Result: #5 Glover Teixiera def. Chael Sonnen by Unanimous Decision.

#1 Ronaldo Souza vs. #2 Luke Rockhold:
Rockhold won the first round of this battle of two of the best middleweights on the earth, and he did it with takedowns, knees and kicks to the body, and with a huge shot that rocked his opponent, Ronaldo Souza, with 15 seconds left in the round. Souza almost submitted Rockhold via a “windshield wiper choke” but lost it at the last minute. Rockhold did a lot of damage with ground and pound in the remainder of the round, and led the fight 2 rounds to none after two. Rockhold put together another impressive round in the third, landing several kicks from the outside and utilizing his world-class counter striking ability. He rocked Jacare in the fourth with a liver shot, and knocked him down with ANOTHER liver shot halfway through the round. Rockhold was easily up 4 rounds to zero after four, and Jacare needed a finish to win. He closed out the fifth round with some excellent ground and pound, and he completed the domination of Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. He won unanimously 50-45, and he will fight Chris Weidman for the belt.
Result: #2 Luke Rockhold def. #1 Ronaldo Souza by Unanimous Decision.

                              (C) Robbie Lawler vs. #1 Rory MacDonald:
Lawler had a hard time getting connections on MacDonald in the first round, until he rocked him with a solid uppercut and knocked him down. He tried to finish him, but couldn’t do it. Despite that, the round was given to Rory. He rocked him again in round two but didn’t even try to finish him. But even despite that, MacDonald yet again was given the round victory. He rocked Rory AGAIN in round three, but yet again couldn’t finish! The judges had to have been against him, because MacDonald got the round given to him AGAIN!!! He was given those three lands because he landed 56 significant strikes through those rounds and was causing more damage, and despite being rocked three times, he was never knocked down. He rocked him once again in round four but couldn’t finish, and then MacDonald rocked him! MacDonald was winning this fight through four because of his resiliency, and besides a few strikes connecting, he was dominating the fight! Rory continued unleashing powerful combos on the champ in round five, and he dominated the fifth round. Rory got the win from two of the three judges, and Rory MacDonald is your new Welterweight champion of the world!
Result: #1 Rory MacDonald def. (C) Robbie Lawler by Split Decision.

                              (C) Cain Velasquez vs. #1 Fabricio Werdum:
Velasquez had troubles with the grappling of Fabricio Werdum early in the first round, but toward the end of the round he rocked him with a right hook. He couldn’t finish him, but in the final 15 seconds of round one he also rocked him with a knee to the liver. In rounds two and three, Velasquez targeted the body of Werdum, and did a lot of damage to his ribs and stomach. He took Werdum down at one point but got caught in a triangle, and almost got submitted, but escaped! Werdum did a great job with kicks in the third round, however. Velazquez rocked Werdum again in the fourth, but could not capitalize and his opponent recovered. Just like many fights on this card, this was a WAR. It was dead even after four, and one round remained to determine the UFC’s Heavyweight King. After the fight was finished, nobody knew the winner. In a very suspenseful decision, the winner was decided to be… Fabricio Werdum!!! He wins by split decision!
Result: #1 Fabricio Werdum def. (C) Cain Velasquez by Split Decision
