Re: A New Era in the UFC

    UFC Fight Night 5 Announced

The next free card on FOX has been released by the UFC and Dana White: And the headliner leads us to believe this one is going to be a snoozer. Here is the card:

Main Event: #4 Nick Diaz vs. #6 Lyoto Machida
Co-Main Event: #3 Benson Henderson vs. #4 Donald Cerrone
Main Card: #3 Gunnar Nelson vs. #4 Nate Diaz
Under Card: #7 Alistair Overeem vs. #9 Minotauro Nogueria
Under Card: #8 Francis Carmont vs. Cung Le

The main event will only be a three-round main event, as it is not a #1 contender fight.

***I'm not going to stack the cards quite as much when I get the first round of title fights done. I just want to get those ones over with.***

      UFC Fight Night 5 Review

#8 Francis Carmont vs. Cung Le:
Francis Carmont came into this fight high off of an upset win against Costas Philippou in UFC Fight Night 1, and he had high expectations of victory against unranked kickboxer Cung Le. Carmont did a good job early on using speed and length to top Le, but a liver shot knocked him down with about two minutes left in the first round. Le held the advantage after one round. He did even more damage to the body of his opponent in the second round, and was having his way with Carmont after two. In round three though. Carmont almost simultaneously rocked Le with a head kick and liver shot, and knocked him down, and even after a solid minute of ground and pound, Le hung on and recovered! He was in serious trouble! Carmont tried to submit Le by an armbar in the final minute but lost it. The fight went the distance, and Cung Le would hold on to win by Unanimous Decision.
Result: Cung Le def. #8 Francis Carmont by Unanimous Decision.

#7 Alistair Overeem vs. #9 Minotauro Nogueira:
Overeem came into this fight an extremely heavy favorite, and he intended to pound down on the old MMA veteran. He didn’t do that. Minotauro took down Overeem early, locked in a choke from half guard, and choked Overeem unconscious!

Result: #9 Minotauro Nogueira def. #7 Alistair Overeem at 2:23 of Round 1 by SUB.

#3 Gunnar Nelson vs. #4 Nate Diaz:
Diaz came into this bout with Gunnar Nelson fresh off of a win vs. Hector Lombard, and he looked to improve his streak to two wins in a row. Nelson tried his best to keep that from happening, as he came out swinging in round one. He got takedowns, landed kicks and knees, and just flat out did better than Nate Diaz. Diaz eventually got the back of Gunnar Nelson in round two, and tried to sink in a rear-naked choke but couldn’t do so. Nelson continued to fire and land the significant strikes in round two, and Diaz didn’t have an answer. Diaz went all out in round three looking for a finish, and he inflicted tons of damage in the process. He landed solid combo after combo, exhibited outstanding takedown defense, and after stuffing a takedown and taking Nelson’s back he would lock in an armbar in the third round and finish Gunnar Nelson! Nate Diaz continues moving up the Welterweight rankings!
Result: #4 Nate Diaz def. #3 Gunnar Nelson at 2:19 of Round 3 by SUB.

#3 Benson Henderson vs. #4 Donald Cerrone:
Cerrone and Henderson went at it early in this fight on the ground, and Cerrone almost won in the first two minutes when he tried to lock in an armbar from full guard. He lost it just before he could pry Bendo’s hands apart. Cerrone got a takedown and mounted Henderson later in the first and unleashed a fury of ground and pound strikes, adding points to his round and securing the round. Cerrone had a few more takedowns in round two and tried to submit Henderson again by armbar, but couldn’t. Henderson landed his fair share of kicks in the first two rounds, but it was tough to match Cerrone’s takedowns and his takedown defense. Cerrone landed 37 significant strikes through two rounds. He rocked Henderson with a head kick in round three as well, and then with 30 seconds left he knocked him down with a liver kick. Cerrone ended the fight beating Henderson down from the top, and he won a Unanimous Decision.
Result: #4 Donald Cerrone def. #3 Benson Henderson by Unanimous Decision.

#4 Nick Diaz vs. #6 Lyoto Machida:
Nick Diaz came into the fight fresh off of an upset Victory against Vitor Belfort, and he took on another Brazilian, Lyoto Machida, in the main event of UFC Fight Night 5. The former UFC Light Heavyweight champ was looking to make a run at the middleweight belt after being run out of his old division, and Diaz stood in his way. Diaz had the same goal. The first round was one of the most technical rounds you’ll ever see. Excellent takedown defense was exhibited, and both men landed solid strikes and countered strikes well. Diaz landed a takedown in the last minute of round one, and that seemed to have given him the edge going into round two. Diaz got into a comfort zone that no fighter wants to see when facing him in the second, as he landed several kicks and was able to keep his hands down due to the fact that Machida couldn’t touch him. It’s a scary thing when Nick Diaz gets in that comfort zone. Diaz led after two easily. Machida came out firing in the third, needing a finish to win the fight. Diaz continued to be as comfortable as he was in round two though, and Machida had a tough time doing anything significant. Right after Diaz picked up his sixth takedown late in the third, he locked up an inverted triangle from side control and made Machida tap!
Result: #4 Nick Diaz def. #6 Lyoto Machida at 4:06 of Round 3 by SUB.
FOTN: Gunnar Nelson vs. Nate Diaz
      KOTN: None
      SOTN: Nate Diaz

Re: A New Era in the UFC

UFC Fight Night 6: Bader vs. Jones Recap

#10 Eddie Alvarez vs. Diego Sanchez:
Alvarez, in his second UFC bout, entered this fight coming off of a loss to Jim Mller in his UFC Debut. Diego Sanchez looked to make it two losses in a row at UFC Fight Night 6. He looked like he was going to do so early on, as in the very first round he knocked Alvarez down with an uppercut, but couldn’t finish it. He also took Alvarez down twice, and inflicted a lot of damage by ground and pound. However, Alvarez would return the favor and knock Sanchez down with 5 seconds to go in the round. Sanchez dominated the second round with solid takedowns and hard strikes. He tried to submit Alvarez with a kimura in the round, but could not. He also rocked him with 5 seconds to go in round two. Sanchez landed 94 head strikes through two rounds. Alvarez rocked Sanchez in the third, but after a barrage of strikes, couldn’t finish him. It was an all-out war in the third round, and when it went to the judge’s decision, nobody knew who won. They decided that the winner would be Diego Sanchez.
Result: Diego Sanchez def. #10 Eddie Alvarez by Unanimous Decision.

#9 Demian Maia vs. Martin Kampmann:
Demian Maia, fresh off of a win in UFC 1 vs. Tyron Woodley, looked to make it two wins in a row vs. unranked Welterweight Martin Kampmann. He knocked him down in the first minute with a head kick, if that explains how ready he was for this fight. He also rocked him with a liver shot in the first round, but after that, Martin Kampmann started finding his range and he landed several strikes on Maia. Maia began finding himself in the second round, but Kampmann rocked him with a shot to the head. Maia would recover, however. Kampmann also did an excellent job of taking Maia down several times in the the round. Maia landed several hard strikes, however. Maia was rocked again with five seconds left in round two. Maia rocked Kampmann in round three with an uppercut, but Kampmann recovered. Kampmann looked like he had a handle on the fight when it was all over, and his split decision victory proved that point.
Result: Martin Kampmann def. #9 Demian Maia by Split Decision.

#4 Dominick Cruz vs. #8 Brian Bowles:
Cruz came into this fight very heavily-favored to win, but he had a tough time early on. Bowles took him down and kept him down most of the first round, but Cruz knocked him down late in the round with a head kick, and even later on, he rocked him again. Cruz followed that round up by landing several significant strikes and doing tons of damage in round two. Both men traded strikes over the entirety of the third round, and with two minutes left Bowles knocked Cruz down with a barrage of head strikes. Cruz knocked him down less than a minute later with a superman punch, and somehow this fight went the distance. The two fighters walked to their corners to a standing ovation. Bowles domination on the ground in round one would end up winning him the fight, as he won a split decision victory.
Result: #8 Brian Bowles def. #4 Dominick Cruz by Split Decision.

#3 Carlos Condit vs. #6 Jake Ellenberger:
Carlos Condit came into this fight looking to throw his hat into the welterweight championship contender mix, but #6 Jake Ellengberger stood in his way. Ellenberger was very aggressive early, and in the first three minutes he attempted two submissions on Condit but couldn’t finish them. He was rocked by a liver shot by Condit in the last part of the round, but other than that he did a great job handling Condit’s dangerous power in his hands and his kicks, and he dominated on the ground. Condit rocked Ellenberger twice in round two though, and knocked him down once thanks to two solid liver shots landing. Ellenberger turned right around and knocked him down with a headkick though. It was a back and forth through two rounds. Both men just swung away in the third round, and when it went to a decision, the win was given to Carlos Condit, unanimously.
Result: #3 Carlos Condit def. #6 Jake Ellenberger by Unanimous Decision.

#3 Ryan Bader vs. #4 Jon Jones:
Jon Jones, the former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, desperately needed a win in this main event to get another shot at the belt that he defended a record amount of times, but former TUF winner Ryan Bader was going to do everything he could to get his own shot at the throne. Bader and Jones threw down from the very beginning, but the most exciting moment of round one was when Bader rocked Jones with a liver shot. Jones did an excellent job with kicks to the body in the first round, so he was given the round. He used his largest reach in the UFC to his advantage in the second round, throwing several kicks from the outside. He also used his world-class takedown defense to his advantage, and he used his excellent wrestling and ground and pound to dominate Bader in the second round. Jones punished Bader’s body with kicks from the outside yet again in round three, but Bader would rock Jones twice with head strikes in the final two minutes of the fight. Jones knocked Bader down with a head strike one minute later, and he would finish him by TKO! Jon Jones wins by TKO!
Result: #4 Jon Jones def. #3 Ryan Bader at 3:35 of Round 3 by TKO.

Re: A New Era in the UFC

UFC 6: Pettis vs. dos Anjos / Rousey vs. Zingano Recap

#10 Frank Mir vs. Mark Hunt:
Frank Mir came into this fight a loser of his last fight vs. Minotauro Nogueira, and he looked to win vs. former K1 Champion kickboxer Mark Hunt to get himself back on track. Hunt absolutely demolished Mir in the first round, and he rocked him with a head kick with 30 seconds left in that round. His success did not translate into the second round, as it was Mir’s turn to beat up on Hunt. It was hard to tell who won after it was all said and done, but the judges felt that Frank Mir won this very boring fight.
Result: #10 Frank Mir def. Mark Hunt by Unanimous Decision

#7 Scott Jorgenson vs. #8 Darren Uyenoyama:
This fight was a match up of the two lowest-ranked Flyweights in the UFC, but it was important for the rankings system. Jorgenson ended this fight EXTREMELY early, as he landed a counter right hook out of nowhere and knocked his opponent out midway through the first round! He rocked him, then immediately threw a power right hand and knocked his opponent out!
Result: #7 Scott Jorgenson def. #8 Darren Uyenoyama at 2:33 of Round 1 by KO.

#7 Rampage Jackson vs. #9 Shogun Rua:
Jackson and Rua were winners of both of their last fights coming into this showdown, and both were looking for a solid win to move up the Light Heavyweight Rankings. Rua had a hard time connecting any strikes on Jackson, but he stuffed a takedown midway through the first round, took Rampage’s back, sunk in a rear-naked choke, and forced him to tap! Shogun wins by submission.
Result: #9 Shogun Rua def. #7 Rampage Jackson at 2:52 of Round 1 by SUB.

#3 Travis Browne vs. #6 Andrei Arlovski:
Andrei Arlovski, one of the first UFC Heavyweight champions, decided he wanted to make one more run at the title. He got this fight with Travis Browne, coming off of a major upset win over Junior dos Santos. This fight was huge for the shape of the division. These two men put on quite the show. Both fighters did significant deals of damage, and Browne even got knocked down by a liver shot. They kept the fight on the feet almost the entire round, and it was hard to tell who had the edge after the first. It was even in the second round as well, but then Browne took Arlovski down, got into half guard, secured an arm triangle, and choked him unconscious! Travis Browne wins by submission!
Result: #3 Travis Browne def. #6 Andrei Arlovski at 3:19 of Round 2 by SUB.

              (C) Ronda Rousey vs. #1 Cat Zingano:
Both women came into the fight 10-0, but everyone on the planet knew that regardless of the result, Ronda Rousey is the best womens fighter on earth. She put her UFC Belt on the line against Cat Zingano, and looked to continue her dominance over every other woman in the sport. Rousey knocked her down early, after she rocked her with a barrage of strikes. She pounced on her and tried to submit her with an armbar, but failed. She blew a perfect shot. However, just a minute later, she wound up a kick to the head, and out of nowhere knocked out Cat Zingano! After just half of a round Ronda Rousey remains the UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion!

Result: (C) Ronda Rousey def. #1 Cat Zingano at 2:18 of Round 1 by KO.

              (C) Anthony Pettis vs. #1 Rafael dos Anjos:
The Lightweight division is regarded by many as the most stacked division in the UFC. Anthony Pettis sat at the top of it, and Rafael dos Anjos wanted to become the new king of the weight class. Pettis got rocked by a liver shot early on, but he recovered almost instantly. dos Anjos also made Pettis stumble with a vicious leg kick, and he tallied three takedowns in the first round. He did an excellent job of setting up combinations in the second round, and he rocked Pettis with a head kick and then knocked him down with a left hook. He tried to submit Pettis with a kimura but could not sink it in. Pettis rocked dos Anjos later on in the round and knocked him down, but he couldn’t finish either. It was a very exciting fight through the first two rounds. By the third round, he had gained a lot of confidence, and began to loosen up and fight comfortably. The challenger looked like he was on a whole other level than the champion. He landed 58 significant strikes through three rounds. Pettis rebounded well in round four, but he would need a finish to retain his belt once it came to the fifth round. Dos Anjos was the one to rock Pettis in the final round and then land an overhand right, but then Pettis rocked dos Anjos, got a knockdown, locked in an inverted triangle, and made the challenger tap! Anthony Pettis with an outstanding comeback to retain his title!
Result: (C) Anthony Pettis def. #1 Rafael dos Anjos at 3:07 of Round 5 by SUB.

Debating bringing back guys like Wanderlei, Forrest Griffin, and GSP For superfights and stuff.

Wanted to say thank you for helping me get interested in doing this. It really brought out my enjoyment in this league. I enjoy it quite a bit. I have the same issue as you. Sometimes I feel the cards are too stacked. I made up my own set of rules. IE,No fighter can fight less than six months, unless under special circumstances. MY other thing is im finding ALOT of cards stacked with championship fights. Just too many.

But, I would for sure bring back, Wanderlei, Forrest, GSP, Matt, Brock, and all the other legends. It adds excitement and mixes things up. Try it. For me if they lose twice, they done.

UFC Fight Night 7: Hendricks vs. Nate Diaz Review

                            Gray Maynard vs. Ross Pearson:
Maynard and Pearson both entered this bout coming off losses, and looking to make a case to enter the top-10 in the Lightweight division. Pearson did well in the first round at landing significant strikes, takedowns, and bullying “The Bully” on the ground. Pearson attempted to submit Maynard with a kimura in round two, but lost it, but he would go on to rock Maynard with a head kick later on in the round. He almost locked in an armbar in the final round, but lost that as well. He thoroughly outstruck Maynard in that round, and his aggression throughout the fight led to him winning a Unanimous Decision.
Result: Ross Pearson def. Gray Maynard by Unanimous Decision.

#10 Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira:
Evans and Nogueira both lost their last fights to Dan Henderson and Shogun Rua respectively, and both needed a win to get back in the race for the Light Heavyweight crown. Evans dominated the first round, rocking Little Nog with a head kick and landing FOUR takedowns. He also came close to submitting Nogueira with an armbar. His dominance would come at a standstill in the second though, as Nogueira rebounded exceptionally well and showcased a dominant round of his own from a striking standpoint. The fight was extremely close in the third round, and the result of the fight was a split decision victory by Rashad Evans.
Result: #10 Rashad Evans def. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by Split Decision.

#4 Frankie Edgar vs. #5 Dustin Porier:
Edgar came into this bout the loser of his last fight, a #1 contender fight vs. Chad Mendes. Edgar looked to get his career turned forward with a win vs the dangerous Dustin Porier. Porier held a distinct reach advantage over Edgar, but he couldn’t use it to his advantage as Edgar outstruck him and wrestled him to the canvas several times. He did much more of the same in round two, landing takedowns and counter strikes very effectively. Porier did rock Edgar in round three and outstrike him in that round, and after he stuffed a takedown he locked in a Peruvian necktie and submitted Frankie Edgar!
Result: #5 Dustin Porier def. #4 Frankie Edgar at 4:05 of Round 3 by SUB.

#3 Anderson Silva vs. #6 Michael Bisping:
One of the greatest fighters of all-time, Anderson Silva, lost his last fight to Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman, and he got a fight with a man who had always wanted to fight him, Michael Bisping, for a chance at moving back into title contention in the 185-pound division. This was one of the better fights we’ve seen in quite a long time. Both men went toe to toe, dropping their hands and swinging away all fight long. Silva seemed to hold a slight advantage after one, but Bisping made an excellent case for himself. Silva did well in round two of “separating himself” from the Englishman with solid kicks, and he stunned him with a right straight late in the round. He looked like the old Anderson Silva. Bisping did land three takedowns though, and it was wide open heading into the final five minutes. Bisping was very lackadaisical in that final round though, as Silva had his way with him. Silva would earn a unanimous decision.
Result: #3 Anderson Silva def. #6 Michael Bisping by Unanimous Decision.

#1 Johny Hendricks vs. #2 Nate Diaz:
Diaz came into this fight on a roll, having defeated his last two opponents, Hector Lombard and Gunnar Nelson. If he won this fight, he would earn a shot at Rory MacDonald for the Welterweight belt. He held a five-inch reach advantage over “Big Rigg”, and he used it to his advantage very early!! No more than 1:18 into the first round, he rocked Hendricks with a big hook, knocked him down, and with one punch, TKO’d him!! Nate Diaz will fight Rory MacDonald for the belt!! What a finish!!
Result: #2 Nate Diaz def. #1 Johny Hendricks at 1:18 of Round 1 by TKO.

FOTN: Anderson Silva vs. Michael Bisping

UFC Fight Night 8: Nelson vs. Browne Review

#7 Hector Lombard vs. Matt Brown:
Both men were losers of their last fights, Lombard to #1 contender Nate Diaz and Brown by a freak liver kick TKO at the hands of Mike Pyle. Both were looking to get back in the W column. Brown nearly finished the fight in the first round when he stuffed a takedown and almost submitted Lombard with a Peruvian necktie, but he lost it. Lombard then tried a kimura but lost it. The majority of this first round was spent on the ground, and Matt Brown dominated it on the ground. When the fight went back to the feet though, Brown rocked Lombard with a right hook, waited a second, and then fired in a left hook and knocked Lombard out cold! Matt Brown by Knockout! After the decision, Matt Brown took the mic from Joe Rogan and said, “Mike Pyle! I want a rematch! Your win was a fluke!”
Result: Matt Brown def. #7 Hector Lombard at 4:45 of Round 1 by KO.

#4 Alexis Davis vs. #5 Sara McMann:
The UFC Women’s bantamweight division is stacked at the top, and two fighters trying to thrust themselves into the upper echelon of female fighters were Alexis Davis and Sara McMann. These two women went toe-to-toe from the very beginning. McMann attempted to submit Davis three times in the first round, but lost all three very quickly. Davis did an excellent job of landing significant strikes and her submission defense seemed to be enough to give her the round. McMann attempted a fourth submission in the second but couldn’t lock it in, but her ability to take the fight to the ground and keep it there won her round two. It was any woman’s fight going into the final round, and McMann rocked Davis with less than 90 seconds left. She couldn’t finish her, but all three judges felt that she had won. Sara McMann by Unanimous Decision.
Result: #5 Sara McMann def. #4 Alexis Davis by Unanimous Decision.

#7 Cub Swanson vs. #8 Chan Sung Jung:
Both Swanson and Jung had yet to fight anyone since the changes to the UFC took effect, so Dana White decided to pit the two talented featherweights against one another. Jung quickly landed five or six BIG kicks early into the first minute, and he set a blistering pace that continued throughout the fight. Jung rocked Swanson quickly with a left hook, but he recovered very quickly. Jung took Swanson down and almost submitted him with a twister, much to the delight of the fans, but lost it very near the finishing point. Swanson rocked Jung with 5 seconds left in the first round, and after one, the crowd was on their feet. The pace feverishly continued into round two, and every second but the last twelve of the round was on the feet. It seemed as if both fighters had won a round heading into the third round. Both men went toe to toe again in the third, and then all of a sudden Swanson tries a superman punch and lands it, and knocks the Korean Zombie out cold! Cub Swanson by KO!
Result: #7 Cub Swanson def. #8 Chan Sung Jung at 4:33 of Round 3 by KO.

#4 Jim Miller vs. #7 Joe Lauzon:
Miller and Lauzon are two of the UFC’s best at putting on a show, thanks to their relentless pace and cardio, so UFC fans got a treat when they were matched up vs. one another. Both were looking to climb the Lightweight rankings. Lauzon tried to submit Miller from mounted position early, but he lost the arm he was trying to secure in an armbar very quickly. Both men did a ton of damage early on, and even after the first round it was a bloody mess. Lauzon landed two takedowns, but Miller did a lot of damage, so he seemed to hold the advantage after one round. Lauzon rocked Miller with a front kick and knocked him down, but Miller protected himself enough to be able to continue on. Miller was ridiculously close to submitting Lauzon via an arm triangle, but he lost it at the last possible second! Lauzon won the second round, and he carried his momentum from the knockdown into the third, as he held a lot of confidence in his abilities in the octagon. He did a great job in that third round, and he was awarded a Split Decision victory by the judges.
Result: #7 Joe Lauzon def. #4 Jim Miller by Split Decision.

#1 Roy Nelson vs. #2 Travis Browne:
These two heavyweight fighters came in vying for a shot at the UFC Heavyweight crown and Fabricio Werdum, and both came in winners of their last fights. Browne came close to submitting Nelson in the first minute with a Kimura, but could not capitalize and lost it. He tried again with one minute left, but he lost that one as well. Browne did a ton of damage in the striking department too in that round, and he held a distinct advantage after one. Nelson seemed to struggle landing strikes in the first and second round, but the ones he did land did damage. Browne seemed to be the far superior fighter in the second round, until Nelson rocked him. Browne still held a very large advantage after two. “Big Country” finally began to find a rhythm in round three, as he began landing strikes and successfully taking Browne to the canvas. He won the third round, but he had a horrible cut and was exhausted after it. He landed several strong combinations in that fourth round, and he amassed an outstanding 17 takedowns through four rounds. Browne did an outstanding job of doing damage with kicks and knees in that fourth round, though. It was hard to tell which one had won the round. Nelson got several more takedowns in round five, and brutalized his opponent with ground and pound. It was hard to tell who had won, but either man deserved to win. It was a split decision, but the judges felt that Travis Browne was the winner, and deserved to fight for the belt.
Result: #2 Travis Browne def. #1 Roy Nelson by Split Decision.
