Re: Unified Boxing Federation (Glory Days Boxing)

UBF BREAKING NEWS: Middleweight Champion Michael Nunn has declined #1 contender Sugar Ray Robinson's challenge for a May title match. Instead, Nunn will defend his title in April against #5 contender Winky Wright.

Nunn's camp released a statement, explaining the decision, which read in part: "The champion is ready to fight in April. If someone wants to challenge him, they need to be ready in April."

Robinson's camp responded, "Nunn is a paper lion. He's a coward. He's ducking Sugar Ray but make no mistake - Sugar Ray Robinson's day as champion is coming."

APRIL 2004 UBF WEDNESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
              Results

              Judges: 99-91, 97-92, 97-92

WW- Oscar De La Hoya defeats Andre Berto by TKO at 1:00 of Round 9
For the duration of the fight, De La Hoya was only slightly better than Berto on Wednesday night. However, a flurry of heavy-handed punches by Oscar in the first minute of the 9th round brought the proceedings to a conclusion. De La Hoya improved to 3-2-0 (1) with the victory, his counterpart dropped to 1-2-0 (1) with the loss.

MW- Kelly Pavlik defeats James Kinchen by Unanimous Decision
              Judges: 99-90, 96-93, 95-94
James Kinchen was knocked down in the 8th round and, by the fight's end, looked like a well-defeated man as his career mark fell to 0-4-0 (0). For Pavlik, his record now stands at 2-2-0 (1).

On Thursday morning, Kinchen called a press conference to announce his intention to retire from the sport of boxing. UBF President steelerfan, later in the morning, stated that Lamar Parks would be eligible for re-instatement on Sunday from his medical suspension which runs through June and that the federation would give Parks until 12 noon on Sunday to submit his application for re-instatement before deciding on a replacement for Kinchen.

Parks, 2-1-1 (0), was suspended after failing a neurological exam in the hours following his November 2003 loss by unanimous decision to Ceferino Garcia. Parks' camp was contacted by Operation Sports for a comment on the matter on Thursday afternoon. A representative of Lamar Parks stated that Lamar was ready to apply for re-instatement and that his team was preparing the documents to present to the federation. Parks, if re-instated, is not eligible to fight until July.

MW- Tony Zale defeats Frank Tate by TKO at 2:42 of Round 10
In a bizarre turn of events, the corner of Frank Tate threw in the towel with just 18 seconds remaining in his bout with Tony Zale on Wednesday night. Officially, Tate was winning the fight through 9 rounds (86-85, 83-88, 86-85) and, unofficially, looked like he would earn a split draw if he lasted the final 18 seconds.

A shocked Frank Tate only commented, "I have to re-think everything" following the loss in his professional debut. It was a moment that was reminiscent of the early days of the federation when current Heavyweight Champion George Chuvalo dismissed his entire staff after a similar mishap in a fight with Anthony Joshua in June 2000.

                  UBF FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
                  Results

LW- Paul Spadafora defeats Sean O'Grady by Unanimous Decision

Spadafora capped a fine performance on Friday night with a 10th round knockdown of Sean O'Grady whom he would go on to beat by unanimous decision. It wasn't the cleanest fight, as there were 5 total foul warnings between the two combatants. Spadafora's record is now 2-2-0 (0) and O'Grady now has a mark of 1-3-0 (1).

LW- Pedro Montanez defeats John Molina by KO at 0:17 of Round 8
Montanez had completely dominated this fight into the 7th round, when he was suddenly sent to the canvas by Molina. Apparently, it woke Montanez up because he came out for the 8th round with blood in his eyes and he put John Molina to sleep just 17 seconds in. Montanez improved to 5-0-1 (3) and Molina is now 3-2-0 (2).

LW- Battling Nelson defeats Al Singer by Unanimous Decision
                  96-94, 96-94, 96-95
This was a very close fight, the difference coming from Nelson's dirty tactics (3 foul warnings) and his 121-88 advantage in punches landed. Nelson is 4-1-0 (2) and Singer falls to 2-3-0 (1).

WW- Henry Armstrong defeats Jack Britton by Unanimous Decision
                  Judges: 99-93, 97-92, 96-93
With a 2nd round knockdown and a 126-89 advantage in scoring blows, Henry Armstrong was victorious by unanimous decision in a bout between two previously-unblemished fighters. With the win, Armstrong improves to 3-0-0 (2) and Jack Britton falls to 5-1-0 (2).

WW- Barney Ross defeats Ben Tackie by Unanimous Decision
                  Judges: 98-89, 99-88, 100-89
Ross was never threatened by Tackie on Friday night, winning with ease with the judges. Per CompuBox, Ross held a 133-36 advantage in punches landed but, according to Tackie, that was not the difference.

"He had plaster on his wraps. I guarantee it," quipped Tackie in the post-fight press conference. "It was like being hit with a rock."

Ross responded to the allegations saying, "Ben is crazy. I would never cheat and never do anything like that. I just beat his *** and he doesn't want to face reality. I will gladly have my wraps inspected, they are in the dressing room."

However, the wraps could not be located by UBF officials and President steelerfan stated, "We take these allegations very seriously but we could not locate the wraps to inspect them. We will be conducting a full investigation and will be looking at how we can tighten up our pre-fight procedures."

WW- Milton McCrory defeats Jackie Fields by KO at 2:13 of Round 2
Milton McCrory ended Jackie Fields' night early on Friday and he improved to 5-0-0 (4) in the process. With the loss, Fields falls to 2-3-0 (2). McCrory will appear on Tuesday Night Fights in May.

MW- Jake LaMotta and Ken Overlin fight to a Majority Draw
                  Judges: 96-96, 95-97, 95-95
LaMotta held a 97-84 advantage in landed punches but failed to impress the judges as he didn't win the fight with any of them. LaMotta is now 3-0-2 (1), while Overlin is 3-1-2 (3).

MW- Joey Giambra defeats Bobby Watt by KO at 0:18 of Round 10
Giambra dominated this fight right from the opening bell and he finished it with a 10th round knockout. For Watts, it was his first loss as he drops to 3-1-0 (1). Conversely, Giambra is now 3-0-0 (1).

APRIL 2004 UBF SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
                      Results

LHW- Georges Carpentier defeats Vonzell Johnson by KO at 0:18 of Round 10
Carpentier was leading comfortably with all three judges (87-83, 89-83, 89-83), when he knocked Vonzell Johnson out early in the last of 10 scheduled rounds on Saturday night. This was the UBF debut of both fighters.

LHW- Sergey Kovalev defeats Battling Bozo by KO at 0:11 of Round 5
Kovalev enjoyed a fantastic professional debut on Saturday night, knocking out Battling Bozo just 11 seconds into the 5th round. Bozo, 1-1-0 (0), was also knocked to the canvas in rounds 1 and 4. Kovalev will night again, next month, on Tuesday Night Fights.

LHW- Matthew Saad Muhammad defeats Murray Sutherland by Unanimous Decision
                      Judges:97-90, 96-93, 96-90
Saad Muhammad was knocked down in the 3rd round but he responded by dominating the remainder of the bout and sending Sutherland to the canvas in rounds 7 and 8. Saad Muhammad, in the UBF debut for both fighters, landed 47 more punches than Sutherland (115-68), per CompuBox.

HW- Tyson Fury defeats James Braddock by Unanimous Decision
                      Judges: 98-91, 98-92, 97-93
A 10th round knockdown of Braddock punctuated a strong performance by The Gypsy King on Saturday night. On the night, Fury landed 125 scoring blows, while Braddock could muster just 63 in defeat. Fury improves to 6-2-1 (3) and Braddock falls to 7-6-1 (5).

MW- TITLE FIGHT: Michael Nunn defeats Winky Wright by Split Decision
                      Referee: Elmo Adolph
Judges: Adelaide Byrd 115-114, Gwen Adair 117-113, David Mendoza 114-115
Despite a 111-106 advantage in punches landed for Wright, the majority of analysts agreed with the narrow split decision that went to UBF Middleweight Champion Michael Nunn on Saturday night. It was a well-fought, close bout that would most certainly produce a highly-anticipated rematch, if one were to occur. A highly-partisan crowd was rooting for Wright as their displeasure with Nunn for ducking the challenge of number one contender Sugar Ray Robinson was palpable. Wright, who is now 2-2-0 (1), is unlikely to get a rematch any time soon. The Champion, Nunn, improved to 3-1-0 (1).

HW- TITLE FIGHT: Lennox Lewis defeats George Chuvalo by Unanimous Decision
                      Referee: Bill Clancy
Judges: Frank Lombardi 118-110, Harold Buck 118-110, Terry O'Connor 118-110
When George Chuvalo took the UBF Heavyweight Championship away from Lennox Lewis in December, Chuvalo landed 102 punches to Lewis' 100. This time around, The Lion completely dominated, landing 111 more punches than the Champion (192-81) as Lewis left no doubt that he was going to be the champion again. Lennox joins James Jeffries as the only-two time champions in UBF history and improves his record to 10-5-1 (6) with the win. Chuvalo, who was consoled by his biggest supporter, the infamous Money99, after the fight, falls to 8-5-1 (6). Lewis was clearly the more focused fighter on Saturday as it appeared that the now-former champion Chuvalo, who has been spotted at dozens of gentlemen's clubs with Money99 since winning the title in December, was totally unprepared.
