    Sand Dune Classic Preview

    Image4

Devon Quarry Country Club is sculpted out of the remaining rock formations in the basin of an abandoned quarry just outside of Flagstaff, Arizona. Players should expect medium-firm conditions and quick greens on the course as the sun rises over the distant mountaintops on a dry, blistering day.

    Pre-Tournament Thoughts:

This place will test you, up and down, and then up and down again. I need to give myself a better chance to score on the greens so I'm going to work on leaving myself in a good spot. My goal this week is to make the cut, little goals for now to help build confidence.

      Round One Scorecard

      Sand-Dune-round-1

Three under will not get me to the weekend, lots of work to do in the second round.

        Round Two: Live Updates

Just about ready to tee off here in the desert, and our man needs to go low, stick with us here for live updates from his round and his chances of making the cut.

@GCTracker: Disaster off the tee (glitch swing), he's lost it way right, scrambles to leave himself with 15 feet for par, misses it.... +1 thru 1.... here we go.

@GCTracker: Not the start he was looking for as he hits a nice tee shot on number 3 only to three putt to go two over.

@GCTracker: Momentum possibly shifting. After making birdie on the par 5 fourth, he tries to drive the green on five only to have the ball plug in the green side bunker. A tasty up and down from there gives him back to back birdies, and he's back to even for the day.

@GCTracker: After two middling pars he finds some magic on number 8 with a beauty of a 2 wood over the canyon to leave himself with a flop shot and a putt to get to one under on the day and -4 for the tournament.

@GCTracker: A costly bogey on 9 levels his score going out, but a birdie at 11 could give our guy some hope here. Time is running out, needs to get hot.

@GCTracker: A huge downhill 17 footer drops for birdie on 12 to bring the round to two under, and overall he is five under for the tournament. Project cut is currently sitting at six under as he heads to the par 5 13th.

@GCTracker: Great tee shot rolls through the fairway and catches the rough, second shot finds the bunker and he is left with a 10 footer for birdie, lips out... crushing. He needed to birdie the easiest hole on the course. Only five holes left to make up a shot or two.

        CUT SWEAT

        14th hole:
Tee shot runs through the fairway and into the light rough. Nice approach from said rough to about 14 feet, birdie putt burns the edge on the high side. Still -5 for the tournament.

15th hole: A booming drive finds the fairway leaving only 127 yards in. A de-lofted pitching wedge winds up in tap in distance, a birdie! 6 under for the tournament and currently UNDER the cut line with three holes to go.

16th hole: Par 3 tee shot is on it's way and it's pin hunting but finds the false front just barely and feeds off the green. Up and down for par, -6 under for the tournament heading to 17.... projected cut has moved to -7 which would put our man on the outside looking in.

17th hole: A safe two putt for par gets him to the par 5 18th hole with an outside shot to make the cut with a PAR, but he would be assured of playing the weekend if he can birdie.

18th hole: An unbelievably bad break on the tee shot send the ball off a rock and into the heavy rough. Have to lay up now and the ball finds a side hill lie in the rough about 100 yards out. He STICKS the approach, it's a tap in birdie to get to -7 for the day, and a ticket to the weekend!

          ROUND 2 RECAP

          Sand-Dune-round-2

It is absolutely huge to get to the weekend. After starting the 2nd round like I did, and having to chase a number, it's huge. Really showed myself that when the pressure is on I can rise to the challenge. I feel like I'm playing with house money now, let's see how far up the leaderboard I can get.

            Round 3 Live Updates:

We've made it to Saturday, and what once looked like a lost tournament now feels like an actual moving day for our man.

            Saturday Thoughts:

Riding high after that finish yesterday, if I can find more fairways I feel like I can make things interesting, just gotta play to my strengths.

@GCTracker: After a par on the first, the attempt to drive the green finds water on #2. Results in a bogey, +1 through 2... has to avoid those types of mistakes.

@GCTracker: Gets that shot back at the par 5 fourth. Now even on the day, and -7 for the tournament which is T66.

@GCTracker: After being stuck in neutral for the better part of two days it looks like we might have found some momentum. An absolute dart to kick in distance on seven has him now -2 on the day.

@GCTracker: Spoke too soon, tee shot on the hardest hole on the course finds out of bounds (barely), and he walks away with a double... right back to even and frustrated.

@GCTracker: After a run of pars, a nice little tee shot on the long par 3 12th results in a birdie which gets him back under par for the day. A strong finish here could set him up for a shot at a top 20 tomorrow.

@GCTracker: The false fronts are giving him a problem as the second straight approach comes up just short, this time a poor decision to putt from the fairway results in a bogey, one under today, and stuck back in neutral.

@GCTracker: A two-putt par on the last ends a rather mundane round of 72. He heads to Sunday at T68 just hoping to salvage a few FedEx Cup points.

                East Coast Classic Preview

                TPC-Boston

Originally designed by Arnold Palmer and considered an unmatched Massachusetts golf club, TPC Boston’s award-winning golf course was re-designed in 2007 by celebrated golf course architect Gil Hanse, with PGA TOUR player Brad Faxon serving as a consultant. The result is a compelling par-71, 7,261-yard golf course named by Golf Digest the “Best Private Remodel of 2007.”

Lush fairways, Bentgrass greens and 64 bunkers create a superb test of golf in Norton’s Great Woods. While challenging enough for the best players in the world during THE NORTHERN TRUST FedExCup playoffs, five sets of tees on each hole make the golf course enjoyable for the everyday club member and golfers of all skill levels.

TPC Boston’s 18th green was renovated in 2011 and the new design was unveiled in 2012. The par 5 now has a smaller, elevated green that is protected by a greenside pot bunker. It has proven to be a more challenging finishing hole for PGA TOUR pros.

As part of the TPC Network and home to professional golf in Boston, you can be sure that playing conditions at TPC Boston are maintained to PGA TOUR-quality standards year-round.

Complementing the golf course is a recently renovated practice facility where members and their guests can hone their skills. The facility features a 70,000 square-foot practice tee, two putting greens, pitching and chipping areas and practice bunkers. In 2015, a state-of-the-art artificial turf line was installed to ensure that Members have the ability to practice during the early season and late season time periods.

                Thoughts heading into the tournament

Two big cuts made the last two weeks, now I need to put my foot on the gas. Heading into Boston I'm sitting T52 in points... not great. Top 75 get to the Web.com Tour Championship and Top 25 get a PGA Tour card... need a good tournament here as there are only three tournaments left after this.

Reading through this made me want to dust off my copy of Tiger Woods 12 and play a few rounds.
