They are the most fortunate national champ ever, 2 losses and getting to play for the title...that was such a crazy year in college football. I don't think it had anything to do with coaching...it's the SEC, big time college football.
    I disagree.

LSU didn't "have" to have a hail mary to beat Auburn. They were in position with a FG. Les Miles just made one of the dumbest calls ever and he got lucky.

LSU should have never lost to Arkansas or Kentucky. I definitely think that LSU team was more talented then their record.

I do agree that they were lucky. Les Miles had just enough talent to overcome his coaching.

They were in field goal position, but it would have been a 40 yarder and they had something like 10 seconds. I think anyone would have ran a play there, but I'm not sure it would have been that play.

Yeah, it would of been a short 5-10 yard pass toward the sideline. Miles dialed up the fade to the endzone.

I'm not as educated on their history as I'd like, but does Oregon have a title? I don't think so, but I'm not sure.

We can agree to disagree. You are civil and have good takes on football on these forums and I enjoy reading your posts so I respect your opinion.

I agree they shouldn't have lost to Arkansas and Kentucky...but Kentucky was pretty good that year. Much better than their final record of 8-5...I still don't know how they lost to Miss ST, UT, and SC, well I do, Miss ST-didn't show up and 7 turnovers, UT-cursed lol, and more turnovers against SC. Kentucky had an awesome offense that year, and I think LSU underestimated their defenses heart by running up the gut at us 4 straight times.

While I didn't feel like they deserved to play for the championship, I felt like LSU was the most talented team in the country that year.

I can see losing one game in the SEC but I don't feel like they should have lost to the likes of Kentucky and Arkansas with all of that talent.

While Kentucky was good that year, that weren't on the same level as LSU. I could maybe give LSU a pass if they had lost one tough road game against a jacked up Kentucky team but LSU was going to overtime every other week.

I think that LSU teams gets to much grief because they were a two loss team. That being said, what two loss team was better? Georgia, WVU, Oklahoma, Mizzou, or USC? I don't think any of those teams were better. Our best title game would have been USC/LSU.

I might have sounded contradictory with this post so I will clarify. I think LSU was the best team but didn't play up to their potential even though they won the national title. In other words, they are the luckiest team to win a title.

I don't know if any of this made sense...

That 07 LSU game was bad. I was playing Halo with a few buddies and watching the game on split screen. After we had taken the lead late I got really pumped, only to have a hail mary beat us. I took some **** that night.

Correction...I took some **** that week.

I did a little research on them because I was curious...

Per wiki: "The Football Writers Association of America, arguably the most prestigious organization at the time to vote on a national champion after the bowls were played, gave their national championship trophy, the Grantland Rice Award, to Iowa" in 1958.

That was probably written by an Iowa homer or something. They finished #2 behind an 11-0 LSU team that year who looked like they destroyed everyone they played.

Anyway, Iowa is a very good choice. Like you said, VT wasn't relevant prior to 1995.

Yeah LSU is basically considered the national champs of 1958. It was a crazy string of SEC #1 teams...Auburn in '57, LSU in '58, Ole Miss in '60, Alabama in '61.

And yeah VT was not a good football program prior to just 14 years ago. They had ONE total conference title before 1995. They didn't win a bowl until 1986.

No, it wouldn't have. There would have been at least 2 seconds left on the clock.

And the answer to this question is UCLA. people who are voting for VT have no sense of history past the mid 90's.

I stand corrected. I thought that they had finished 2nd in both polls in 54 but I see now that they finished 1st in the coaches poll.
