And with Bob Stoops as coach, a pretty bad BCS bowl game W-L record.(2-5)

I moved to the U.S. not long ago so I'm still trying to get the whole concept of college sports. I'm not really familiar with any of the teams so I wanted to ask all you pros here for some help. Could you please help me choose a college to root for? I would appreciate them having:
        a) A football team ranging from very good to totally awesome
        b) and a basketball team of at least moderate quality.
Don't really care for any of the other sports.

Being a Georgia Tech fan I'm going to suggest Georgia Tech.

Our Football team has a lot of history:
        • 4 National Championships (could claim up to 6)
        • 16 Conference Championships (3 in the ACC (including 3 Coastal Division championships 1 of which was shared), 5 in the SEC, 3 in the Southern Conference (essentially the SEC + the ACC founding members), and 5 in the SIAA (essentially the SEC)

        • first team to win the 4 major bowls (only been accomplished by 4 teams)
        • Biggest win in history (222-0 over Cumberland)
        • Coached by John Heisman (Man after which the trophy recognizing the most outstanding Collegiate player) during the height of his career, and Bobby Dodd (Man after which the Coach of the Year Trophy is named after
        • 13 straight bowls (Currently tied for 4th with our rivals, we trail only FSU (28), Florida (19), and Virginia Tech (17) (all of which have played for National Championship during those 13 years) in terms of current bowl streaks)
        • 38 bowl Appearances (22 wins)
        • Won 6 Straight bowls in 6 consecutive appearances (set in 1956), a record that wasn't broken until 1988 (32 years later)(when it was set there were only 6 bowls, when it was finally broken there were 17 bowls)
        • And the Oldest and Winning-est Stadium in Div. 1A history: Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field (Tech has played on the site since 1905, the first permanent stands were built in 1913)

        As for Basketball
Most of our sucess has been over the past 30 years (when Bobby Cremins became the coach) before his arrival we had only been to the Tournament once (1960), granted this was in the time were only 1 school could represent a conference and in the SEC that was almost always Kentucky, even with the limit Tech really only posted 3 seasons that would have been good enough to earn an invite during the time the rule was in effect. Additionally Tech posted 2 of its best seasons prior to the formation of the NCAA Tournament (13-2 in 1937, and 18-2 in 1938 (won the SEC championship)).
here's a list of some of our major accomplishments:
        • Ended Kentucky's 129 home-game winning streak in 1955 (Later that season GT handed them their 2nd of 3 losses that season)
        • 2 Final Four appearances ('90, '04), 1 national championship appearance (loss to uconn)
        • 16 NCAA tourney appearances, including 9 straight from 1985 to 1993
        • 4 Conference Tournament Championships (3 ACC, 1 SEC) and 3 Regular Season Championships(1 SEC, 2 ACC). 9 Conference Tournament Final Appearances (2 SEC, 7 ACC)
        • Home to NBA greats suchas: Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott (once held the record for most 3 pointers in a half, game (Kobe broke this almost 7 years later), and season (Ray Allen broke this record 10 season later besting Scott by 2, (267 v. 269))), John Salley, Mark Price, Stephon Marbury.
        • Often Referred to as Point Guard U(niversity) for all of the Point Guards that have come through since Cremins took over, that have made impacts in the NCAA and/or NBA.

        Downside to our Basketball program:
        • Our coach refuses to accept blame for losses, leaning on the toughness of our conference for our poor performances. Despite having one of the top teams in the conference in terms of talent the team finished 7-9 in the conference (10-10 following their ACC tournament run).
        • Given the talent he has pulled in at his time at Tech there is no reasonable explanation for him having more than 1 loss against our rivals (they were punished for cheating in '03 and weren't able to field a starting line-up on scholarship until '07 yet over this time he is 3-4)
        • Also his contract is auto-renewing, so he's not going anywhere unless we buyout his contract for close to $9 million.

        Upside:
        • Because we play in one of the best and most competitive basketball conferences and because of our success over the years we have become a destination for some of the top players in the country.
        • Any coach who is willing to accept blame and change his style (and possesses some sort of recruiting ability) could lead this team to contend for titles, hell if our current coach would take some initiative the fans wouldn't have anything to complain about.

And if you like baseball GT has one of the best programs in the country typically ranked in the top 10, our only weak spot seems to be tournament performance.

That's my pitch, I hope it convinces you, but as long as you don't become a georgia fan you'll be okay in my book.

Also even though Boston College makes a lot of sense geographically you must know they don't allow tail-gating (the school would love to allow it but the community surrounding the school, which has the final word, will not allow it).

Happy decision making, and welcome to the States.
NCAA: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Kennesaw State Owls (Alma Mater)
NFL: Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons
        MLB: Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves
        NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins
        RIP Atlanta Thrashers

Pick Ohio State. We had a thread like this a couple months back and the guy picked Ohio State and was banned like 4 days later.
