    Help picking a team

    Hey everyone!
I moved to the U.S. not long ago so I'm still trying to get the whole concept of college sports. I'm not really familiar with any of the teams so I wanted to ask all you pros here for some help. Could you please help me choose a college to root for? I would appreciate them having:
    a) A football team ranging from very good to totally awesome
    b) and a basketball team of at least moderate quality.
Don't really care for any of the other sports.

I'm obviously biased, but Wisconsin's football team is good and their basketball team is normally good.

You'll probably want a team with more sizzle than them, though. And frankly I don't blame you. They're sort of boring.

Thats the Big Ten for you, but I love it.

To the OP, where abouts did you move? It would be easier to really get behind and follow a college that is in your region or area. You will get to see more games on tv, and have more fans in your area to root with.

Unless you are like me and live somewhere where the college football is terrible (las vegas) and can go to a casino and watch any game you want. I am an Ohio State fan and if you want a good team who will always break your heart they are the team for you. Good in both football and basketball, but for some reason the last few years just cant get it together in the big games.

I agree choose a team in your area if possible. Easier to watch games on TV and in person that way. If you live somewhere without a team, you can just watch some games and see if you gravitate towards a team.

I'm going to be a homer and say West Virginia University. However, there is a very detailed, very difficult application process in order to become a fan. 1st: Can you get hammered by game-time? 2nd: Do you have a couch to burn after every big victory? If you can answer both of those questions with a "Yes," then congratulations! There is only one final question to answer: Do you like being extremely frustrated when your team loses to a team they should have beaten only to become ecstatic the following week when they beat a team they shouldn't have? If "Yes," then welcome to the fold.

As others said pick a team near where you will be living. It will make it easier to watch them on TV and even go to their games.

If you live anywhere near Ohio go with Ohio State. Top 10 football team every year and basketball team is good also. Frustrating team to follow though.

How do you just "pick" a team to root for? You should let that team find you, give it time.

What area of the country do you live?? I would think that would have a lot to do with what team you should root for.

I'm not trying to become a fan of a certain team just because some guy on an internet forum said so. It's just that I'm not familiar with any of the teams at all, and am asking for people to suggest teams worth checking out who I may or may not start supporting. Sorry if I was a tad blurry on that in my first post.

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations, I'l definitely check out Ohio State and West Virginia now but keep'em coming.

Boston College may be a good team for you since you live in Boston.

They're decent in both football and basketball most years, and you might be able to check out a game or two.

Florida State is on the verge of a dynasty and Rutgers good go undefeated.

In all seriousness, root for Florida. They're good, cool, and don't really have any fans that annoy me.

Well Boston College and Connecticut are the only 2 major college football teams in New England. You have a bunch of FCS schools though like Rhode Island, UMASS, New Hampshire, Maine and Ivy league schools.

I would go with either Boston College or UCONN. UCONN is definitely a basketball school and their football program is improving.

yeah, Boston College and Uconn aren't bad choices, although on the football spectrum on the very good end, not the totally awesome end. Uconn basketball rocks though.

                              Re: Help picking a team

I gave this a bit more thought. Besides the local schools, there are others with good TV deals that allow you to follow them pretty easy even though they aren't really all that local. There is Notre Dame, which has its deal with NBC. Recent years have been fairly lean for their football program, but it is probably the most storied program in all of college football, and their basketball program is pretty good too. They've had an off-and-on rivalry with Boston College, too, so they'll be travelling to Boston every couple of years. Of course, there's a lot of venom aimed at Notre Dame supporters.

There's also the SEC schools, with their deal with CBS. It's the best football conference in America, so pretty much all of them are pretty good at football. It's a take-your-pick from them. I like Malzahn's offense, so I enjoy watching Auburn play, not sure about the quality of their basketball program.
