    why does FCS exist?

    i understand why there is division 1, 2 and 3 but what purpose does FCS serve? Ive looked it up and i dont get it, there aer a lot of small schools in the FBS like South Alabama and the entire Sun Belt. So why dont FCS schools just be division 2 or go up to FBS

    Re: why does FCS exist?

    All of the teams in the FCS are Division 1. They all participate in D1 proper for every sport except football (in most cases, anyhow). As late as 1977, quite a few teams now in the FCS played Division 1 football. The next year, the NCAA divided D1 into two subdivisions, I-A and I-AA, now known as FBS and FCS.

    The reason they don't "just go down to D-2" is because they ARE D-1 schools, but simply do not play in the FBS for football (the main reason usually being monetary concerns).

    TL; DR- These schools are Division 1, but simply can't afford to compete on the FBS level.

    EDIT: And that's not to mention the scholarship difference. D-2 gives out something like 30 fewer full scholarships than the FCS.

      Exactly. They're only FCS in football, since FCS stands for Football Championship Subdivision and FBS is Football Bowl Subdivision.

        Re: why does FCS exist?

        Football wise,
        FBS = 85 Scholarships
        FCS = 68 or 64 Scholarships
        DII = 36 Scholarships
        DIII = No Scholarships

        It's all based on money, really.

        Alcorn State is still DI in basketball because it doesn't take nearly as much money for their basketball program compared to say, TCU. TCU spends way more money on football and scholarships for football, and it shows on the basketball court. Kansas is good in basketball for the reverse effect. But money, is about 75% of the reasons
