Why Is It So Hard for EA and Penalties?

First game out of the box with default sliders, simulation mode on All Madden and 0 penalties across 127 plays.

THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED IN AN NFL GAME!

With penalty sliders at 50 EA claims the numbers are in line with real NFL data. They've said it for years and since probably Madden 16 (OBJ cover) penalties have been terrible. They had it pretty close to right and then they f'd it up.

Yes, it is disappointing that the sliders at 50 bring no penalties, but the majority of the sliders do work and you can get a good number of penalties with the sliders.

I tend to disagree. Certain sliders work, others don't. Holding and roughing the Passer are really the only penalties you can't have at 99.

Here are the sliders I have at the moment. Yes, they are high, but the result is good. Do I wish the sliders were more sensitive? Absolutely. But I am getting penalties that are realistic and meaningful. The same was true for M25.

        Offsides:95
        False Start: 95
        Holding: 55
        Facemask: 80
        Block in back: 60
        Roughing the Passer: 50
        Defensive PI: 99

Again, I know they are high, and the sliders should work better. But with these, in the limited play I have had today, I have seen 9-12 penalties through 4 quarters. There have been more DPI than I ever had in M25, which is certainly a positive.
I am not saying that penalties should not be better, but I am saying they are there with the higher sliders.

I think it’s like that because more players like to play competitive and since penalties are kinda random and usually not the users fault, they have it like that.

but yeah you can work with the sliders and from my experience you got solide results.

You're 100% right. And this is where the gameplay modes should matter. Arcade should be penalty-free, comp should only have a small amount of user-generated penalties, sim should match real life data. It could be so simple...

I had a pass interference called on the defense and a block in the back called on me in my first game.

This. Also when penalties happened more often before, people got mad since they don’t control lineman and their break out run play or deep pass play would get called back for holding.

Its the randomness issue that gets some people mad, usually the same people that want more penalties called too.

I had 2 DPI in the 2 games I have had a chance to play. A few holding penalties, illegal man down field. An illegal touch. Penalties are there.

Ummm, but Madden has an Arcade, Sim and Competitve mode. If you don't want penalties, play Competitive or Arcade mode. As it stands now, like has forever in Madden, all 3 modes play the same. You rarely see penalties. You max out the sliders and you just get holding and roughing the passer called 99% of the time, with some illegal block in the back called from time to time. Pass interference though ? Even maxed out, rarely called. Offsides ? Rarely called. Face Mask ? Haven't seen it called in YEARS.

They had it right in CFB 25. I had games last year where there were double digit penalties in games. I had games where certain guys were muti-offenders and had to be benched. It seemed like the actual player affected whether a penalty was called. The siders were so sensitive, exception being Facemask that I actually had to lower them. What happened between now and then? I have no idea. Whatever the case they should have left them alone.

A little tweaking and not extreme sliders seem to work best.
I've seen everything but face mask and offensive PI in 5 games.

What’s crazy is I’m almost positive I remember seeing facemasks called in either Madden or CFB in the beginning of the season last year and then they just got turned back off. The animation was there and everything and it’s like they just turned them off. It was pretty early.

That was after not seeing them called for years. It was almost like they accidentally turned them back on. Now, Even at 100 you never get any again.

To expand on this, one of the things that has been a central part of Madden's design philosophy is user control. And its not limited to sim vs competitive either; almost every feature or mechanic has the user as an active participant.

Any thing where the user is not an active participant is low priority and placed on the backburner. We only got improvements to coaches because they came up with a way to make the user an active participant ("loadouts").

I wouldn't at all be surprised if we get realistic penalties only when they add something like a "disciplined" option for these coach loadouts.

They use to have a discipline player trait for every player back in the day. It didn't really work however because even when would edit an entire team to undisciplined player trait flags weren't called.
